DESIGN OF SPACE TIME TRELLIS CODED OFDM

Space Time Trellis Code (STTC) is a technique that can be used to improve the performance ofthe Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system over wireless channels byproviding both coding gain and diversity gain. STTC is combined from two codes, Trellis CodeModulation (TCM) as an inner code and Space Time Block Code (STBC) as an outer code. TCMwhich combines the choice of a modulation scheme with that of a convolutional code provides thecoding gain, and the other code provides the diversity gain. Simulation is done over flat fading andfrequency selective Rayleigh fading channel for Eight Phase Shift Keying (8-PSK) TCM. It foundthat the best results are obtained for the case of two transmitters and three receivers which have again of about 18dB over that without STBC.

Coding techniques for diversity enhancement of dense wavelength division multiplexing MIMO‐FSO fault protection protocols systems over atmospheric turbulence channels

AbstractAn enhanced transmission is presented in a multiple‐input‐multiple‐output (MIMO) dense‐wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) free‐space‐optical (FSO) communication link using diversity coding techniques under the effect of turbulent weather phenomenon. The findings show good performance with an (8 channels × 2.5 Gbps data rate/channel) 20 Gbps 1500 m transmission distance. The bit‐error‐rate (BER), outage probability (OP), and signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) of the diversity combining techniques using maximum‐ratio combining (MRC), selection combining (SC), and equal‐gain combining (EGC) technique are evaluated in this work. The obtained results illustrate that Alamouti, space‐time coding (STC), space‐time block coding (STBC), space‐time trellis code (STTC), orthogonal STBC (O‐STBC), and quasi‐orthogonal STBC (QO‐STBC) on the minimum mean‐square‐error, and MRC are worth implementing on the DWDM‐FSO wireless communication systems. The mitigation of atmospheric turbulence is achieved using MIMO diversity combining techniques coding. The simulation results for diversity coding techniques using QO‐STBC/STTC and SC/MRC in the MIMO‐DWDM FSO communication system can improve BER performance, OP, and SNR. The MRC exhibits the lowest OP and BER when compared with the SC and EGC. The numerical results demonstrate that the FSO communication link using DWDM QO‐STBC/STTC improves the power penalty at both BER values under varying atmospheric turbulence conditions for ST, MT, and WT, in comparison to FSO systems without DWDM QO‐STBC/STTC diversity coding techniques.

Machine learning of irreducible error floor in the space-time trellis code

The phenomenon of irreducible error floor in the space-time trellis code (STTC) is not fully understood. This comes from the fact that the connection between the trellis structure of the generator matrix G and the instigation of an irreducible error floor is uncertain. Given this difficulty, the present study attempts to gain a better insight into the ordeal via a data-driven approach. The classification and regression trees (CART) machine learning model is employed to predict the occurrence of the irreducible error floor from the trellis structure. Further analysis of the combinatorial characterisation of the trellis structure unveils a series of dominant patterns that consistently instigate the irreducible error floor. Furthermore, simulation also reveals that the codewords within the 'initial state' of the trellis structure are primal in the occurrence of the irreducible error floor. CART can achieve approximately 0.92 accuracy in predicting the irreducible error floor, with an average prediction time of 0.3833 μs.

WORKING ANALYSIS OF SPACE TIME TRELLIS CODE ON WIFI MIMO(2X2) SYSTEM OFDM

Wireless communication nowadays requires a system with reliable performance, efficient use of bandwidth, efficient power, and better coverage because it is in line with human needs for applications that require high and fast data rates. One of the concepts and methods to meet these needs is using an antenna technique with many transmitters and receivers or often called Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), by adding a strategy at the time of delivery, namely the Space-Time Coding (STC) technique. In addition, the application of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) on MIMO-STC will more efficiently use bandwidth. The Space-Time Trellis Code (STTC) method is one of the diverse techniques in sending data with complex coding so that coding reinforcement is achieved and applied to the OFDM MIMO system. It is hoped that a system with reliable performance can be achieved. The simulation that is carried out presents the STTC and OFDM schemes on multi antennas (2 transmitters x 2 receivers) with a Combiner and Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimator (MLSE) detection algorithm on the receiver. It is to get the quality of the sending signal in the performance analysis of Bit Error Rate (BER) with Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). The simulation results are shown by modulation with M-array Phase Shift Keying (MPSK) and the number of symbols sent by giving different input parameter values. The results show that the number of carriers and the size of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is large, and the modulation type with a small constellation produces a low BER and throughput at high SNR.

DESIGN & IMPLEMENTATION OF POLYPHASE FILTER TO DENOISE OFDM SIGNALS

An amazingly effective digital transit system that carries multiple carriers that meet in conjunction with each other over a period of time is known as the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system. Among the traditional symbols, there is a need to include a group of guards. However, in OFDM systems this is not required. Although there is an overlap of side bands from each carrier, no interference is involved within the signals found here as they are orthogonal in relation to each other. This research work is based on a wireless channel to reduce the rate of error using space-time trellis codes. In this research project, the minimum error rate is reduced over wireless channels using space time codes and poly-phase filters. The proposed modular simulation is performed at MATLAB and the results show that the minimum bit error rate decreases in the network.

Studying and Modeling the Performance of the TCM-STBC Systems in the Rayleigh Channel

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems will play an important role in future generations of wireless networks. Space-time block code (STBC) and space-time trellis code (STTC) are two techniques that may be used in multi-antenna radio systems. This paper aims, most importantly, to study the performance of STBC systems at different vallues of such parameters as spectral efficiency, matrix codes and constellations. A performance comparison between STBC and STTC schemes is performed. In order to show the efficiency of the system’s ability to communicate with uncoded and coded transmission structures over AWGN and Rayleigh channels, the trellis-coded modulation (TCM) is introduced. The results obtained show that the proposed TCM-STBC system model, using one and two receiving antennas, improves the performance of Rayleigh channel communication systems at 9.5 dB and 11.5 dB for a BER of 10−5

Error Analysis of Grouped Multilevel Space-Time Trellis Coding with the Combined Application of Massive MIMO and Cognitive Radio

In today’s scenario, demand for error-correcting codes with minimal error constraints for wireless communications. Multilevel coding scheme with trellis codes as component codes provides flexible data transmission rates, coding gain, diversity gain with improved spectral efficiency and low decoding complexity. This paper investigates the potential improvements by using the Multilevel coding scheme with massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output in Cognitive Radio Networks with trellis codes as component codes. This paper discussed space-time coding with beamforming and antenna grouping according to the channel state information. Multilevel Space-time coding is based on multi-level Quadrature Amplitude Modulation signaling and beamforming to mitigate the effect of primary users for the enactment of secondary users in Cognitive Radio. The primary users provide channels dynamically to the secondary user for an unknown duration. Our transmission use Quadrature Amplitude Modulation based signals, with an adaptive grouping of antenna which weight according to the optimization, which inherently depends upon the resource allocation of the secondary user. The results show that the proposed coded system achieves Bit error rate/Symbol error rate/Frame error rate and Signal to noise ratio varies according to sources sensing time.

Chaos-Based Space-Time Trellis Codes With Deep Learning Decoding

In this brief we propose a space-time trellis code scheme based on three-dimensional chaotic attractors. The chaotic trajectories are represented by the symbolic dynamics generated by a labeled Poincaré section and are transmitted by multiple antennas, defining a chaos-based space-time trellis code (CB-STTC). This code is defined by a finite state encoder that maps information sequences to restricted sequences satisfying the dynamics of the attactor. We also propose a neural network architecture capable of learning how to decode the CB-STTC. Finally, the frame error rate of the proposed CB-STTC is analyzed with maximum likelihood and neural network decoding.

Space-time trellis codes: Field programmable gate array approach

This paper presents an implementation of Space-time Trellis Codes for 4-state on FPGA. To reach the very high data rates provided in STTC, a lot of expensive high-speed Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) should be employed for the real time applications, while it might not be affordable. This fact has motivated in designing dedicated hardware implementations using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) with low cost and power consumption. The hardware device XC3S400, family Xilinx Spartan-3, and package PQ208 are used in this project, in which the STTC encoder and decoder utilizes maximum 10% and 22% as that of available device capacity respectively. The design has been simulated and synthesized successfully in Xilinx integrated software environment.

Super-orthogonal double space–time trellis code

This study develops a new class of super-orthogonal trellis codes for four transmit antennas based on double space–time codes. The transmit antennas are divided into two groups, each having two transmit antennas. The information bits are demultiplexed into two streams; each is encoded independently using a super-orthogonal trellis code and then is transmitted from the corresponding antenna group. The resultant parallel-trellis code structure offers a higher data rate and, at the same time, it has a smaller number of parallel branches in the trellis encoder compared to a single stream encoder. The decoding is done using the maximum likelihood (ML) decoder with an interference cancellation algorithm.It is shown that the proposed scheme reduces the required number of overall calculations by about half compared with super-orthogonal space–time trellis codes (SO-STTC) and super-orthogonal trellis coded spatial modulation (SOTC-SM).The performance of the designed codes is simulated and shows that an improvement in the frame error rate (FER) is achieved at 4 and 5 b/s.Hz compared with SO-STTC and SOTC-SM, while at 6 b/s.Hz, it achieved an improvement in the lower and medium range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) (<22 dB).

Hierarchical Trellis Based Decoder for Total Variation Sequence Detection (TVSD) in Space-Time Trellis Coded (STTC) Wireless Image/Video Communication

This paper proposes a robust reconstruction scheme for image/ video transmission in space-time trellis coding (STTC) based MIMO wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSN). The information bits of the image/ video stream are modulated using STTC prior to transmission over the MIMO wireless channel between the multimedia sensors and the cluster head. At the receiver, a novel total variation sequence detector (TVSD) is developed that employs an anisotropic total variation (TV) regularized cost function to leverage the bounded variation property of the image/ video stream, in addition to the coding and diversity advantages of the STTC, for improved image/ video recovery. For reconstruction, a novel bi-layered hierarchical trellis based modified Viterbi decoder is developed to decode the optimal bit sequence corresponding to the least TV cost function using appropriately modified node and branch metrics. Simulation results using several test images and video sequences demonstrate the improved reconstruction performance of the proposed scheme, especially in the low SNR regime (0 - 10 dB), in comparison to the conventional maximum likelihood (ML) decoder, which makes it ideally suited for implementation in practical WMSN.

Performance Analysis of Grouped Multilevel Space-Time Trellis Coding Technique Using Cognitive Radio in Different Deployment Models

In this era, the number of users in a network is increasing tremendously at a faster rate; as a consequence, quality of service (QoS) is drastically deteriorating. To compensate such kinds of problems, we attempted to enhance the QoS of the network, which leads to an improvement in throughput, link quality, spectral efficiency, and many more. To meet the requirements mentioned above, many researchers intervene to advance and propose different techniques with an appropriate design methodology. In this work, we try to emphasize symbol error rate (SER) and frame error rate (FER) by implementing some of the existing space-time coding techniques like Space-Time Trellis Coding (STTC), multilevel space-time trellis coding (MLSTTC), and grouped multilevel space-time trellis coding (GMLSTTC). Though all these techniques are proved to be efficient enough, we explicitly included a powerful method of cooperative diversity-based spectrum sensing in cognitive radio scenario. From this analysis, we landed on to the conclusion that this technique is far better to deal with all these parameters, which can improve the QoS of the network. This paper has also analyzed the effect of the proposed model of GMLSTTC with cognitive radio on various deployment setups such as urban, suburban, and rural macrodeployment setup of the ITU-R M.2135 standard.

Sparse Bayesian Learning-Aided Joint Sparse Channel Estimation and ML Sequence Detection in Space-Time Trellis Coded MIMO-OFDM Systems

Sparse Bayesian learning (SBL)-based approximately sparse channel estimation schemes are conceived for space-time trellis coded (STTC) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems relying on trellis-based encoding and decoding over the data subcarriers. First, a pilot-aided channel estimation scheme is developed employing the multiple response extension of SBL (MSBL) framework. Subsequently, a novel data-aided joint channel estimation and data decoding framework relying on optimal maximum likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) is intrinsically amalgamated with our powerful EM-based MSBL algorithm. Explicitly, an MSBL-based MIMO channel estimate is gleaned in the E-step followed by a novel modified path-metric-based Viterbi decoder in the M-step. Our theoretical analysis characterizes the performance of the proposed schemes in terms of the associated frame error rate (FER) upper bounds by explicitly considering the effect of estimation errors along with evaluating the product measure of the STTC under consideration. Finally, our simulation results are complemented by the Bayesian Cramer-Rao bound (BCRB), the associated complexity analysis and the performance of the proposed schemes for validating the theoretical bounds.

Space-Time Trellis Coding with Equalization

As we are entering the 5G era, high demand is made of wireless communication. Consistent effort has been ongoing in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, which provide correlation on temporal and spatial domain, to meet the high throughput demand. To handle the characteristic nature of wireless channel effectively and improve the system performance, this paper considers the combination of diversity and equalization. Space-Time trellis code is combined with single-carrier modulation using two-choice equalization techniques, namely: minimum mean squared error (MMSE) equalizer and orthogonal triangular (QR) detection. MMSE gives an optimal balance between noise enhancement and net inter-symbol interference (ISI) in the transmitted signal. Use of these equalizers provides the platform of investigating the bit error rate (BER) and the pairwise error probability (PEP) at the receiver, as well as the effect of cyclic prefix reduction on the receivers. It was found that the MMSE receiver outperforms the QR receiver in terms of BER, while in terms of PEP; the QR receiver outperforms the MMSE receiver. When a cyclic prefix reduction test was carried out on both receivers, it yields a significant reduction in BER of both receivers but has no significant effect on the overall performance.

Performance evaluation of space time trellis coded MIMO for mobile communications

&lt;p&gt;The major enemy of wireless communication is multipath fading that highly degrades the received signal. Spatial diversity highly reduces deep fades of the wireless communication. Higher signal to noise ratio (SNR) requirement can be reduced by using space time coding. In this paper, the error performance of un-coded MIMO, different diversity combing methods, space time block codes and space time trellis codes are analyzed using different parameters including number of antennas, M-array modulations, trace criteria, rank and determinant. The simulation results have shown that the Bit Error Rate (BER) significantly reduces with increasing number of receiver antennas. However, the number of antennas that a mobile device can have is limited by its size and this is inconvenient for mobile communication. Hence, this paper suggests space time codes to mitigate multipath problems in mobile communication. So, BER performance of space time block codes scheme was evaluated by varying the number of transmitter and receiver antennas along with varying M-array PSK modulation orders. The results have shown that better BER is possible by integrating space time codes with spatial diversity. Finally, the error performance of space time trellis codes was evaluated by using trace, rank and determinant, and the simulation results depicted that better error performance is achieved using the proposed multipath reduction method.&lt;/p&gt;

Network Coded MIMO Cooperative Communications for the Emergency Area

This work proposed a space–time trellis code (STTC) based network code to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance in transmitting the data from the user to an emergency department. In the proposed scheme, the STTC is implemented in the communication system aided with the network code and amplify-and-forward scheme relay. The STTC scheme encoded the serial data stream to a parallel data stream decoded by the Viterbi algorithms to reduce the transmission time. The proposed scheme improves BER during data transmission. The BER performance of a generic data transmission system, with and without the proposed STTC, are compared. It was found that the generic data transmission system with the proposed scheme achieved better BER performance when transmitting SOS message at the urban area compared to the generic data transmission system without the STTC scheme. By employing the proposed scheme, the BER performance and the transmission time were reduced by 40% even at low signal-to-noise value.

Trellis-Coded Space–Time Shift Keying

In this paper, we investigate a trellis-coded space shift keying modulation scheme, called trellis-coded space–time shift keying (TC-STSK), which combines trellis-coded modulation with space shift keying. By analyzing the rank criterion using a graph theoretic approach, we maximize the number of unique differences between pairwise codewords as the code design goal. We discuss the code design principles for achieving diversity, and propose a design algorithm that is mostly suitable for rate- $1/n$ codes, where $n$ is the number of the code output bits. We then propose a diversity adaptation mechanism by selecting only the codewords with desired diversity, and use it to design higher rate codes that achieve full diversity. We also provide the code designs and a modified soft Viterbi decoder for such schemes. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve diversity orders expected from the theoretical analysis, and that increasing the number of shift registers and transmit antennas improves the performance of the TC-STSK scheme. The results also show that TC-STSK outperforms a space–time trellis code with the same bit rate and the number of shift registers.

STTC design for vehicular communication systems employing fixed‐gain AF PLNC over cascaded fading channels

In this study, the authors combine physical layer network coding (PLNC) and space-time trellis coding (STTC) techniques to improve the error performance of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication systems where all fading channels are assumed to undergo double Rayleigh fading (DRF) which is worse than Rayleigh fading used in cellular communications. In the authors' analysis, they show that the DRF channels can be modelled by using the mixture gamma distribution. After that, pairwise error probability (PEP) analysis is performed for a fixed-gain amplify-and-forward PLNC V2V system employing STTC over the DRF channels, and an upper bound for the PEP is obtained. By examining the behaviour of the upper bound expression in the high SNR region, they derive a new design criterion for STTCs. Finally, using this criterion they propose novel STTCs with 4 and 8 states for V2V systems employing PLNC over the DRF channels.
