Analysis of traffic accidents on the highways of the timber industry complex of the Arkhangelsk region

In the article, based on the analysis of the current regulatory support for the export and transportation of roundwood, the authors state that currently in the sectoral regulatory and technical documents on roads of the forest complex SP 288.1325800.2016. The prerequisites for road accidents that took place on the roads of the timber industry complex of the Arkhangelsk region in 2018–2022 are studied, the prevailing factors and conditions for their occurrence are identified, the content of the program of ongoing scientific research on improving traffic safety on forest highways is announced.

Balancing Performance Trade-offs in Modern Sorting Methodologies

The study of sorting algorithms has always been a key topic. This paper thoroughly explains and investigates the time complexity of six classic sorting algorithms through theoretical analysis and experimental comparison. We implemented insertion sort, selection sort, bubble sort, shell sort, quicksort, and heapsort. By controlling data scale and distribution, we systematically tested the performance of different algorithms under various scenarios. The results show that there are significant efficiency differences between algorithms on small-scale data, and the advantages of quicksort and heapsort become more obvious as data size increases. Through extensive comparative experiments, this paper identifies the application scenarios of each algorithm, providing a theoretical basis for algorithm design and selection.

Loose Canons: The Global Anglophone Novel and the Failures of Universalism

This essay examines In the Light of What We Know, by Zia Haider Rahman (2014. In the Light of What We Know. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux) and Home Fire, by Kamila Shamsie (2017. Home Fire. New York: Riverhead), two texts portraying the geopolitical state of the globe whose formal experimentations signal the shifting political stakes of the anglophone novel in the second decade of the twenty-first century. At the level of content, Rahman and Shamsie’s novels depict ever-deepening rents in Enlightenment-borne concepts of citizenship, statehood, and universalism, explicitly confronting the expansion and destruction wrought by globalization and its hegemonic predecessor, colonialism. At the same time, they practice a kind of formal violence in their stylistic instability. I argue that the content of these texts depicting the politically imperilled state of the world is powerfully reflected in their narrative fractures. Rahman and Shamsie directly interrogate the types of narratives employed to disseminate universalist, democratic ideals across the world, and do so by inverting these ideals entirely. As they progress (and digress), both novels break apart the narrative template which centres the universal subject of history and thereby produces the global aspiration to “acquire” this sort of subjectivity. Distinguishing these two novels from earlier examples of postcolonial literature are the ways they challenge the baseline ideological and epistemological concepts underpinning the sort of modernity which produces the novel as a form. In the Light of What We Know and Home Fire suggest that representing what a “global anglophone” reality might actually look like in the second decade of the twenty-first century necessitates the portrayal of the decadence and failure of universalism in content and form alike.

Analysis of the movement of an empty railcar on the longitudinal profile of the sorting slide

The article uses analytical formulas derived from the application of the basic law of dynamics for non-ideal connections (the Dalembert principle), the calculation of the kinematic parameters of the rail carriage movement (acceleration, time, braking path) in the braking zone on the site of the first braking position of the sorting slide is performed. All over the world, it is becoming increasingly important to design and build modern sorting stations, as well as to choose the right height for sorting slides. The main function of the sorting slide at railway stations is the disbanding of trains, as well as the formation of new trains. Sorting will depend on how rationally the profile of the descending part of the slide is designed. Effect of Annealing Temperature on The Improved Photo Catalytic Degradation of Zinc Sulfide Thin Films Under Visible Light Irradiation

Here, we reported a modern sort of zinc sulfide thin films as a catalyst was prepared from simple sol-gel approach. The as-deposited samples were further annealed at 200, 300, 4000 C temperatures under atmospheric environment. The variation in the annealing temperature becomes crucial for optimizing the prepared samples characterization and dye degradation behavior. Structural and morphological analysis recommends that test were hexagonal crystal structure and spherical shaped morphology, particle size was found within the range of 25-40 nm. The significant red shift was found within the absorption edge and lessening of energy in the band gap was found whereas the annealing temperature is increased from 200 to 400 oC. Recombination of photo-generated electron-hole sets was moreover distinguished and the photo-degradation test was monitored methylene blue dye solutions under visible light irradiation. The 400 oC annealed sample showed superior photocatalytic performance such as high degradation efficiency and long term stability towards MB dye.

Environmental evaluation of distributed versus centralized plastic waste recycling: Integrating life cycle assessment and agent-based modeling

Abstract Plastic waste is internationally recognized as a problem, fueled by increased public awareness of environmental concerns and the steady increase in waste import bans. Modern sorting and recycling technologies are mature, but face implementation limitations in highly dense urbanized regions such as Singapore due to significant space constraints and expensive labor. Distributed plastic sorting and recycling facilities at small-scale closer to points of plastic waste generation offer the possibility of increasing the recovery of plastic waste streams in urbanized settings. To quantify the environmental performance of such systems, this study compares the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of large-scale centralized facilities versus distributed small-scale facilities for sorting and recycling plastic bottles and takeaway containers generated in the central region of Singapore. An agent-based model is used to simulate different scenarios of plastic waste generation, collection routes, sorting, and recycling. The simulation results are used in a multi-level life cycle assessment to quantify the greenhouse gas emissions of the plastic sorting and recycling network as well as its individual entities. The results reveal that the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of small-scale distributed plastic recycling compared to large-scale centralized systems are sensitive to the transport distance traveled and the type of trucks used. © 2020 The Authors. The Role of Women in Tunisia from Bourguiba to the Promulgation of New Constitution

Abstract The question of women became one of those fundamental issues used by North African nations in order to demonstrate to Western countries just how “democratic” they were. In this regard, the legislation in favour of women’s emancipation in Tunisia undoubtedly reveals an important peculiarity. In 1956 Tunisia underwent an important modernisation following the independence obtained from France. This produced a social emancipation not found in other Islamic countries, resulting in the acquisition of women’s rights, for example, the abolition of polygamy. Since the 1970s, women have felt as if they are hostages to politics and, through some feminist associations, denounce inequalities despite enjoying certain rights, becoming aware of their subordination in a male-dominated society. With Bourguiba’s successor, Ben ʿAlī, assuming power in 1987, a policy emerged in which the rights of women seemed to be guaranteed, without guaranteeing human rights. And Tunisia revealed, much like other countries, a sort of mutilated modernity, in which the modernisation process was put in motion, without the modernising state committing itself to promoting a political modernity with the adoption of true democratic principles. Moreover, how much did the secularism of the Ben ʿAlī regime coincide with the transformation of Tunisian society? Perhaps the abuse of power by the dictator neutralised the paradigm of human rights? Social and cultural transformation beginning with Bourguiba and continuing with Ben ʿAlī produced an “Islamic-secular” country also as it relates to gender issues. But, with the victory of the Islamic party al-Nahḍayn the 2011 elections, will there be a radical transformation of women in society? And with Tunisia’s new constitution finally being adopted in January 2014, has it been considered a victory for women? This paper seeks to stimulate debate on the issue in the context of post-colonial studies through a social-historical perspective.

Brazil’s “March to the West”: Memories of an Indigenous Shaman and other “Moderns”

The Amazon forest and savanna became central for the realization of Brazilian modernity in the 1940s when aviation networks were created by a government expedition to open up the western territories. Indigenous peoples played a number of roles in this state project. Through a focus on the autobiographical account of an indigenous shaman working as a team member and the memoirs of the expedition leaders, I contrast how indigenous peoples were scripted as the antithesis of the “modern,” how their labor made them the means of the realization of this sort of modernity, and how some came to share, in part, the goals of this “modern” project. The juxtaposition of non-indigenous with indigenous accounts of this project allows for a reevaluation of the terms popular in the “ontological turn”—namely, “Amerindian” and “modern” thought—and calls for moving from these categories to examining the historically specific contexts in which people engage with each other in joint projects.

Harmony outside the Iron Cage: Tanaka Shōhei’s Strategic Deconstruction of the Music-Theoretical Edifice

Tanaka Shōhei was a major figure in both Japanese and comparative musicology. Convinced by his tutor in Tokyo (Mendenhall) that Japanese music must embrace harmony in order to become “modern,” Tanaka was admonished by his advisor in Berlin (Helmholtz) that the Japanese must not adopt twelve-tone equal temperament because of its adverse effects on the ear—contradictory advice given that the latter was considered the simplest way of enabling the smooth functioning of the former. His solution involved a system of musical intonation whereby the octave was divided into fifty-three (as opposed to twelve) tones. In the context of his overall project, however, this theoretical innovation was only the first step. His goal was to reproduce a sort of harmonic “rationality” in Japanese music, while preserving its expressive melodic freedom: in Weberian terms, he wanted a different sort of modernity, one that escaped the confines of the iron cage.

Tragedy and Compromise in George Eliot's Armgart and Middlemarch

Prevailing critical practice has tended to position tragedy as an influential but limited antecedent to the novel. The conditions of the bourgeois novelistic universe are seen to undermine and mitigate the effects of tragedy. The very occurrence of a tragic event precludes any further participation in the novelistic world, conceived of as the mundane territory of compromise and normalcy. In Armgart and Middlemarch George Eliot's engagement with the tragic form calls into question claims of the untenable coexistence of the tragic and the novelistic. In these works tragedy is a deliberate and vital influence, applied to guide the reader's response to the text but also to expose the possibilities for a modern sort of tragedy. Focusing on these works, this essay argues that the bourgeois novelistic universe can also be fertile ground for devastating tragic events, that the conflict between personal desire and social duty is reimagined to encompass a more quotidian type of tragic hero, and that in Eliot's reworking of tragedy, compromise is not its antithesis but its harbinger. The tragic figures of Armgart and Middlemarch, while distinct from classical models, nevertheless find themselves ensnared between their wills and their fates, and the limited choices of women represent a muted but authentic version of tragedy. In Eliot's work the seemingly narrow narratives of individual lives—a point frequently offered as evidence for the nontragic nature of Eliot's novels—prove to have universal resonance.

 Anthony Ashley Cooper, third earl of Shaftesbury, is a complex figure in the intellectual history of eighteenth-century Britain. He can easily appear as an anachronism, contemptuous or ignorant of the advances in learning underway in the age in which he lived. In the original index to the second edition of his Characteristicks of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times (1714), ‘Metaphysicks’ is followed by ‘necessary Knowledge of nothing knowable or known’. Under ‘Philosophers’ are the entries ‘See CLOWN’, and ‘Moral Philosophers of a modern sort, more ignorant and corrupt than the mere Vulgar’. One seeks an entry for ‘Newton, Isaac’ in vain; and whilst Bacon had the honour of being cited by Shaftesbury—once—it was only to establish that he had been fortunate to have ‘escap’d being call’d an ATHEIST’ by his contemporaries, an oversight Shaftesbury was eager to remedy. Rather than trouble himself with the productions of a modern age whose philosophy he considered to be ‘rotten’, Shaftesbury unabashedly proclaimed his preference for the Stoic moralists of classical antiquity. In his General Dictionary (1739), Thomas Birch noted that Shaftesbury ‘carried always with him’ the ‘moral works of Xenophon, Horace, the Commentaries and Enchridion of Epictetus as published by Arrian, and Marcus Antoninus’.
 
 

SOCIABILITY, POLITENESS, AND ARISTOCRATIC SELF-FORMATION IN THE LIFE AND CAREER OF THE SECOND EARL OF SHELBURNE

ABSTRACTThe second earl of Shelburne is well known for his association with reform initiatives in the second half of the eighteenth century. However, he also put conspicuous effort into strengthening his aristocratic credentials and status. One noteworthy feature of this was his politeness: he aimed at personal cultivation, a goal in itself and a foundation for leadership in society; he also had a reputation for politeness in everyday social situations. One context for Shelburne's conspicuous politeness was his personal need to overcome a number of impediments to asserting aristocratic status. However, another context was his effort to articulate a vocation for the modern aristocrat. For Shelburne, polite sociability was a way for the aristocrat to gather, organize, and deploy creative energies in society for the sake of improvement and reform. Though a particular example, Shelburne illustrates the energy that asserting aristocratic status could demand and the sort of modernity that could be claimed on behalf of aristocracy. Finally, Shelburne demonstrates the role of politeness in aristocratic formation: in particular, he shows how aristocratic engagement in contemporary society entailed a range of social relations which polite competence helped to manage.

Modelling production processes in a vehicle recycling plant

The European Directive on end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) fundamentally changed the business philosophy of the European vehicle recycling system, which was exclusively profit-oriented. As the dominant participants of this system, vehicle recycling plants (VRPs) are especially affected by its implementation. For VRPs to successfully respond to the prescribed eco-efficiency quotas, investment will be needed to procure modern sorting equipment as well as to achieve full transformation of their production process. However, before VRPs decide to make this very important investment decision, it is necessary to determine the adequacy of such a decision in detail. Consequently, the following questions become unavoidable: Can modernly equipped VRPs conduct profitable business? Are eco-efficiency quotas actually attainable? How will the new changes in vehicle design influence VRPs? To provide answers to these essential questions, a production planning model of a modernly equipped VRP was first developed and then tested extensively using real data. Based on the answers provided by the proposed model testing analysis it was concluded that VRP transformation is not only necessary but completely justified and that the final success of the ELV Directive is realistic.

Potato Sorting Based on Size and Color in Machine Vision System

Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is cultivated as a major food resource in some countries that have moderate climate. Manual sorting is labor intensive. Furthermore in mechanical sorting the crop damages is high, for this reason we must operate a system in which the crop damages would be diminished. For sorting of potatoes fast, accurate and less labor intensive modern techniques such as Machine vision is created. Machine vision system is one of the modern sorting techniques. The basis of this method is imaging of samples, analysis of the images, comparing them with a standard and finally decision making in acceptance or rejection of samples. In this research 110 numbers of potatoes from Agria variety were prepared. Samples were pre-graded based on quantitative, qualitative and total factors manually before sorting. Quantitative, qualitative and total sorting in Machine vision system was performed by improving images quality and extracting the best thresholds. The accuracy of total sorting was %96.823.

Vitrification of toxic wastes: a brief review

Whilst the vitrification of waste materials is a well established technology, hitherto it has not been economically viable on any substantial scale when applied to non-radioactive wastes. However new UK and European legislation may affect this situation. The present paper briefly reviews published work pertaining to waste vitrification in terms of legislation, waste compositions, energy, emissions and economic assessments. The focus is on vitrification of ashes arising from the incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW) and sewage sludge in terms of their composition, glass melting and reuse potential. The conclusion is that the high compositional variability of these and other wastes tends to preclude their use in many applications. However, the use of modern sorting and separation technology coupled with better control of waste treatment procedures may help to improve the range of potential uses for these wastes.
