Application of exponential functions in weighted residuals method in structural mechanics. Part 3: infinite cylindrical shell under concentrated forces

Solution for cylindrical shell under concentrated force is a fundamental problem which allow to consider many other cases of loading and geometries. Existing solutions were based on simplified assumptions, and the ranges of accuracy of them still remains unknown. The common idea is the expansion of them into Fourier series with respect to circumferential coordinate. This reduces the problem to 8th order even differential equation as to axial coordinate. Yet the finding of relevant 8 eigenfunctions and exact relation of 8 constant of integrations with boundary conditions are still beyond the possibilities of analytical treatment. In this paper we apply the decaying exponential functions in Galerkin-like version of weighted residual method to above-mentioned 8th order equation. So, we construct the sets of basic functions each to satisfy boundary conditions as well as axial and circumferential equilibrium equations. The latter gives interdependencies between the coefficients of circumferential and axial displacements with the radial ones. As to radial equilibrium, it is satisfied only approximately by minimizations of residuals. In similar way we developed technique for application of Navier like version of WRM. The results and peculiarities of WRM application are discussed in details for cos2j concentrated loading, which methodologically is the most complicated case, because it embraces the longest distance over the cylinder. The solution for it clearly exhibits two types of behaviors – long-wave and short-wave ones, the analytical technique of treatment of them was developed by first author elsewhere, and here was successfully compared. This example demonstrates the superior accuracy of two semi analytical WRM methods. It was shown that Navier method while being simpler in realization still requires much more (at least by two orders) terms than exponential functions.

Static and free vibration analysis of graphene platelets reinforced composite truncated conical shell, cylindrical shell, and annular plate using theory of elasticity and DQM

In this paper, three-dimensional static and free vibration analysis of functionally graded graphene platelets-reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) truncated conical shells, cylindrical shells and annular plates with various boundary conditions is carried out within the framework of elasticity theory. The main contribution of the present work is that formulation for free vibration and bending behavior of the FG-GPLRC truncated conical shell based on theory of elasticity has not yet been reported. Additionally, formulation and solution for cylindrical shell and annular plate are derived by changing the semi vertex angle in formulation and solution of FG-GPLRC truncated conical shell. A semi-analytical solution is proposed base on employing differential quadrature method (DQM) together with state-space technique. Validity of current approach is assessed by comparing its numerical results with those available in the literature. An especial attention is drawn to the role of GPLs weight fraction, patterns of GPLs distribution through the thickness direction, geometrical parameters such as semi-vertex angle, length to mid-radius ratio on natural frequencies and bending characteristics. Numerical results reveal that desirable static and free vibration response (such as lower radial deflection and higher natural frequencies) can be achieved by locating more square shaped GPLs near inner and outer surfaces.

An Analytical Method for Cylindrical Shells With Nozzles Due to Internal Pressure and External Loads—Part I: Theoretical Foundation

Solids Struct., 42, 3299–3319) for two normally intersecting cylindrical shells is presented, and the applicable ranges of the theoretical solutions are successfully extended from d/D≤0.8 and λ=d/(DT)1/2≤8 to d/D≤0.9 and λ≤12. The thin shell theoretical solution is obtained by solving a complex boundary value problem for a pair of fourth-order complex-valued partial differential equations (exact Morley equations (Morley, 1959, “An Improvement on Donnell’s Approximation for Thin Walled Circular Cylinders,” Q. J. Mech. Appl. Math. 12, 89–91; Simmonds, 1966, “A Set of Simple, Accurate Equations for Circular Cylindrical Elastic Shells,” Int. J. Solids Struct., 2, 525–541)) for the shell and the nozzle. The accuracy of results is improved by some additional terms to the expressions for resultant forces and moments in terms of complex-valued displacement-stress function. The theoretical stress concentration factors due to internal pressure obtained by the improved expressions are in agreement with previously published test results. The theoretical results discussed and presented herein are in sufficient agreement with those obtained from three dimensional finite element analyses for all the seven load cases, i.e., internal pressure and six external branch pipe load components involving three orthogonal forces and the respective three orthogonal moments.

Some Results on the Analytical Solution of Cylindrical Shells With Large Openings

An analytical solution for cylindrical shells with large openings has been developed by the asymptotic method. In comparison with previous analytical solutions obtained by Eringen, Van Dyke and Lekkerkerker, the following three areas have been improved by the present method: 1) The modified Morley’s equation, which is applicable to ro/RT≫1, is used instead of Donnell’s shallow shell equation. 2) The accurate expression of boundary curve of hole is expanded in terms of powers of ρo = ro/R, while the previous approximate geometric description corresponds to the first term of the expansion. 3) The accurate boundary conditions for generalized forces are expanded in terms of powers of ρo and truncated after the terms of ρo3; the previous approximate boundary conditions correspond to the terms of order up to ρo, in the asymptotic expansions. The present solutions are in good agreement with Van Dyke’s solutions for small openings. The analytical results show that the error caused by the previous approximate boundary conditions is significant and has the order O(ρo); the error caused by the previous approximate geometric description of hole boundary has the order O(ρo2); and finally, the error caused by using Donnell’s shallow shell equation is very small for ρo ≤ 0.7. For openings with ρo > 0.25, say, noticeable differences exist between the present and the previous results. The stress analysis of cylindrical shells connected with nozzles has been developed by using the present solution. For increasing the accuracy of stress analysis in the nozzle, the exact description of the edge of nozzle is given and the near-edge boundary layer stress state in the nozzle is considered. The results obtained are in good agreement with those by Eringen for small openings and with those by F.E.M. and experiments for large openings.

Extension of the Beam Theory to Tapered Beams and Conical Shells

The object of this paper is to extend to tapered beams and conical shells (membranes) the conventional formulas of the beam theory. This extension is made for two conditions: the plane tapered beam and the thin conical shell. The method of solution and the results obtained in the two cases are essentially different. The general analysis of the conical shell leads to solutions which are more complex than the corresponding solutions for cylindrical shells. However, in the case of applied stress analysis, simplifications are possible, which lead to solutions of the same type as for cylindrical shells.
