Reactions of dicarboxylic acids with [Ru(CO) 3(PPh 3) 2

To obtain water soluble transition-metal complexes, complexes obtained by reaction between [Ru(CO) 3(PPh 3) 2] and dicarboxylic acids have been studied. The derivative obtained with oxalic acid, [Ru(O 2CCO 2H) 2(CO) 2(PPh 3) 2] ( 2), dissolves in water when treated with NEt 3 and reacts with [Pt(PPh 3) 3] to give [Ru(CO) 2(PPh 3) 2(μ-O 2CCO 2) 2Pt(PPh 3) 2] ( 5).

Soluble and electroactive transition metal complex polymers

New soluble, electroactive metal complex polymers have been synthesized from bis-(4-styryldithiocarbonate)oxide and Ni, Cu, Pd, and Pt salts. Pressed pellet conductivities for the polymers are ca. 10 −6 Ω −1 cm −1. A family of poly(metal tetrathiooxalates), poly (MTTO), of NiII, CuII, and CuI have been synthesized and characterized. These compounds display typical semiconducting behavior having room temperature pressed pellet conductivities of ca. 10 0 – 10 1 Ω −1 cm −1. Structural data on the poly(MTTO)s has been obtained using the Large Angle X-ray Scattering technique (LAXS).

Electroactive and soluble polyheterocycles and transition metal complex polymers

We have employed three different methods to obtain soluble electroactive polymers. A series of pendant substituted polythiophenes have been prepared and studied, using various ethylmercapto and alkyl substituents. Results of electrical conductivity, optical spectroscopy and theoretical modeling will be presented. N-propane sulfonate substituted pyrrole has been polymerized to yield water soluble, self-doped polymers. Electrochemical analyses show these materials, as copolymers with pyrrole, to behave as cation specific membranes. Charged transition metal bisdithiolene linkages have been incorporated into polymer main chains, along with flexible linkages, by utilizing the ionic ligand derived from bis-(4-styryldithiocarbonate) oxide. In solution the polymers have electrochemical characteristics comparable to transition metal bisdithiolenes.

Commercial Applications of Reactions Catalyzed by Soluble Complexes of Cobalt and Rhodium

Abstract The past quarter century has witnessed an enormous transformation in the use of soluble transition metal complexes as catalysts in the chemical process industries. Until the mid-1950s, industrial use of homogeneous catalysis was largely confined to reactions of acetylene [1]. As indicated in Fig. 1, a large family of acetylene-based reactions was used to produce polymer intermediates such as vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, chloroprene, and 1,4-butanediol. The processes were simple but they were relatively expensive because they were based on an expensive raw material. The large energy content of the acetylene molecule (ΔF°=50.84 kcal/mol) made it both hazardous to handle and expensive even in times when energy was cheaper.

Reverse osmosis in homogeneous catalysis

Selectively permeable polyimide membranes have been used to separate soluble transition metal complexes from reaction mixtures by reverse osmosis. Adiponitrile solutions, obtained by hydrogenation of 1,4-dicyanobutene with RhCl(PPh 3) 3 and by hydrodimerization of acrylonitrile with RuCl 3 complexes, have given 60 – 99% separations of the metal complexes. Similar results were obtained in the separation of cobalt and rhodium complexes from hydroformylation products of 1-pentene and of a palladium carboalkoxylation catalyst from ethyl hexanoate. The differential permeability of ligands and metal complexes has been used to synthesize new dinitrogen complexes of ruthenium. Reverse osmosis treatment of RuCl 2(PPh 3) 4under N 2 pressure led to separation of dissociated triphenylphosphine and isolation of ▪ Similarly, the diphenyltriazenide complex RuH(N 3Ph 2)(PPh 3) 3 gave RuH(N 2) (N 3Ph 2) (PPh 3) 2.

Coal liquefaction with soluble transition-metal complexes

Several transition-metal complexes were tested for their effectiveness in liquefying coal under very mild conditions. Liquefaction was not observed, probably because interaction with the coal deactivates the catalyst.
