A method of pretreating incineration ashes containing metallic aluminium using NaOH to mitigate volume expansion under highly alkaline conditions

Globally, millions of tonnes of incineration ashes are produced with a substantial portion remaining underutilized in low-value applications or disposed in landfills. Many types of fly ashes and bottom ashes contain metallic aluminium (Al0), which causes volume expansion when the ashes are used in alkali-activated materials and as a supplementary cementitious material due to the generation of hydrogen gas at high-pH conditions. This phenomenon significantly restricts the potential applications of these ashes. To address this issue, ashes can be pretreated with NaOH to oxidize the metallic aluminium (Al0) before their utilization. This study focuses on investigating the effect of the NaOH pre-treatment duration on fly ashes from the co-combustion of recovered solid fuel, peat, and wood. A pre-treatment process was conducted using 8 mol/L aqueous NaOH solution to treat the fly ash for up to 60 minutes. The formed slurry was subsequently used to prepare alkali-activated material by mixing it with bottom ash and employing either sodium silicate or sodium carbonate as an alkali activator. The NaOH pre-treatment demonstrated a 100 % metallic aluminium conversion into oxidized form resulting enhancement in mechanical performance, microstructure, and water absorption properties. The proposed method offers a highly efficient and rapid solution for eliminating the drawbacks caused by the presence of metallic aluminium and it can be conveniently implemented on construction sites. Concurrently, this study also explores the leaching behaviour of heavy metals during alkali-activation. Significant reductions in the leaching of Ba, Cr, Cu, Mo, and Pb were observed, highlighting the environmental remediation potential of alkali-activation methods.

Influence of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flakes coating on the microstructure and mechanical properties of alkali activated composites

The objective of this research is the improvement of the mechanical strengths of the alkali activated slag composites with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flakes content. The main drawback when large PET flakes (2–9 mm) are used in these composites is reduced adhesion between plastic surface and binding matrix. Therefore, the PET flakes were coated with two types of adhesives – based on polyvinyl acetate or sodium silicate solution, and then covered with fly ash, waste glass or slag powders. The microstructure (assessed by scanning electron microscopy) of interfacial transition zone between the PET flakes coated with waste glass and slag powders is denser than for uncoated PET flakes; this explains the improvement of the compressive strength of these mortars especially after longer curing times (28 days). The flexural strengths of the mortars with PET flakes are higher than for reference mortar (with sand aggregate) and the apparent density of the alkali activated composites with PET flakes are in general smaller than for the reference mortar. Thus, the coating of PET flakes improves the mechanical behaviour of mortars, preserving also a low apparent density. These results can lead to a wider recycling of PET waste, slag and waste glass powder, promoting circular economy and reducing the CO2 footprint without compromising the critical mechanical strength of mortars.

Should our older, edentulous patients live with their teeth sitting in a glass of water?

Over 20 years ago, the McGill consensus statement stated that a mandibular two-implant overdenture should be the first choice of care for our edentulous patients. We have around three million edentulous patients in England and Wales currently, many over the age of 60, and many of whom are not able to wear a satisfactory set of complete dentures, let alone able to eat a normal diet. In 2009, the York consensus statement produced by the British Society of Prosthodontics concluded that "a substantial body of evidence is now available demonstrating that patients' satisfaction and quality of life with implant-supported overdentures in the mandible is significantly greater than conventional dentures". So, why has the NHS ignored these important scientific papers and left our older population in a state of dental neglect? This discussion paper will consider some of the facts and suggest that there may, potentially, be some solutions.

Effect of Span-80 to Moisture Resistance of Near-infrared Curing 3D Printing Sodium Silicate Foundry Sands

In this work, a new method of near-infrared curing 3D printing sodium silicate sands (NIRC3DPSSS) driven by photovoltaic cells was proposed, and the Span-80 moisture resistance modifier was studied. NIRC3DPSSS had the advantages of high strength, rapid curing and low residual strength. However, the 24h storage strength would reduce because Na+ in the bonding bridges could absorb moisture. The experimental results showed that the strength of Span-80 modified sands molds reached 0.95MPa after 4 hours in a humidistat with 99%RH (relative humidity) containing 2.2% sodium silicate, an increase of 97.9% comparing to common sands molds. In air(80%RH), the strength reached 1.25MPa, an increase of 40.4%. The optimal effect of modification was achieved when Span-80 was 0.066% of the raw sands. Additionally, the bonding film and bridges in sodium silicate sands modified with Span-80 were more stable, smoother and free of cracks when observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS).

Optimization of Proportions of Alkali-Activated Slag-Fly Ash-Based Cemented Tailings Backfill and Its Strength Characteristics and Microstructure under Combined Action of Dry-Wet and Freeze-Thaw Cycles.

To enhance the application of alkali-activated materials in mine filling, cemented tailings backfill was prepared using slag, fly ash, sodium silicate, and NaOH as primary constituents. The effects of the raw material type and dosage on the backfill were examined through a single-factor experiment. Additionally, response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized to optimize the mixing ratios of the backfill, with a focus on fluidity and compressive strength as key objectives. The evolution of backfill quality and compressive strength under the combined effects of dry-wet and freeze-thaw (DW-FT) cycles was analyzed. The hydration products, microstructure, and pore characteristics of the specimens were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and nitrogen adsorption tests (NATs) across varying cycles. The results demonstrate that the optimal backfill composition includes 47.8% fly ash, 6.10% alkali equivalent, and a 1.44 sodium silicate modulus. The macroscopic behavior of the backfill under DW-FT coupling followed this progression: pore initiation → pore expansion → crack formation → crack propagation → structural damage. After a minor initial increase, the backfill strength steadily decreased. Microscopic analysis revealed that the decline in internal cementation products and the deterioration of pore structure were the primary causes of this strength reduction. Thus, the DW-FT coupling can cause significant erosion of the backfill. The technical solutions presented in this paper offer a reference for solid waste utilization and provide valuable insights into the durability of backfill under DW-FT coupling.

Study on the anchoring properties of new water glass-modified alkali-activated portland cement materials

This study developed a novel water glass-modified alkali-activated portland cement (WGSC) anchoring agent, characterized by low cost, rapid setting, early strength, and slight expansion. It is suitable for fully bonded anchor rod anchoring in soft rock tunnels. Using orthogonal experiments and range analysis, the optimal composition of WGSC was determined: silicate cement as the matrix, water-cement ratio of 0.3, 20 % sodium silicate with a modulus of 3.3, 2.5 % early strength agent, and 9 % UEA. The initial/final setting times were 6.72/8.63 minutes, linear expansion rates at 3 days/7 days were 0.32 %/0.54 %, and compressive strengths at 1 hour/24 hours were 16.4/28.2 MPa. Pull-out model tests demonstrated a 47.95–92.85 % increase in 24 h tensile bond strength compared to conventional silicate cement anchoring agents. Corrosion resistance tests indicated WGSC maintained a stable appearance compared to traditional agents. SEM analysis revealed a dense structure and clear network in WGSC, while XRD analysis identified microcomponents mainly as CSH, active silica (SiO2), and CASH, contributing to its dense structure and ideal expansion properties, facilitating superior anchoring and durability. This research elucidates the mechanism of WGSC, confirming its rapid setting, compressive strength, and corrosion resistance advantages, making it economically feasible and advantageous for application and promotion, thereby providing insights for the development of anchoring materials in highly deformed soft rock tunnels.

Research on the Physical Properties of an Eco-Friendly Layered Geopolymer Composite

Building envelopes with natural fibers are the future of sustainable construction, combining ecology and energy efficiency. The geopolymer building envelope was reinforced with innovative composite bars and two types of natural insulation (coconut mats and flax/hemp non-woven fabrics) were used as the core material. A 10 mol sodium hydroxide solution with an aqueous sodium silicate solution was used for the alkaline activation of the geopolymers. The purpose of this study was to confirm the feasibility of producing geopolymer composites with insulating layers made of renewable materials, which would have compressive strengths like those of C25/30-grade concrete and thermal conductivity coefficients like those of lightweight concrete. This publication presents the results of physicochemical tests on the base materials (oxide (XRF) and mineral phase (XRD) analysis as well as morphology and EDS) and studies the physical (density measurements), mechanical (flexural and compressive strength tests) and insulating properties (thermal conductivity measurements) of the finished sandwich partitions. The composites achieved a flexural strength of 7 MPa, a compressive strength of up to 30 MPa and a decrease in the thermal conductivity coefficient of about 60%. The research demonstrates contribution to sustainable construction by developing geopolymer composites, offering both structural integrity and superior thermal insulation. This innovation not only reduces reliance on traditional, carbon-intensive materials but also promotes the use of eco-friendly resources, significantly lowering the carbon footprint of construction. The integration of natural fibers into geopolymer matrices addresses key environmental concerns, advancing a rapidly growing field that aligns with global efforts toward energy efficiency, waste reduction, and circular economy principles in building design.

Effect of treatment types of recycled concrete aggregates on the properties of concrete

Reusing waste materials such as construction and demolition waste is an environmentally significant task. This article aims to improve the quality of recycled aggregates after the demolition of concrete structures. Two methods, mechanical cleaning and impregnation, were explored to enhance the quality of coarse aggregates. The findings indicate that mechanical cleaning is more effective than soaking in a sodium silicate solution. The compressive strength of concrete made with mechanically cleaned recycled aggregates was 2.3 times greater than that of concrete made with untreated rubble. Concrete with impregnated rubble had a compressive strength 1.1 times greater than that of concrete with untreated aggregates. Infrared spectroscopy was used to study the microstructure, revealing that the type of treatment does not influence the quantity of portlandite and ettringite in hydrated cement. However, the treatment of recycled aggregates alters the interaction in the gel portion of cement hydration products. Concrete with aggregates treated by sodium silicate has more aluminate components. Additionally, there is a shift of the bands assigned to Si-O stretching to higher wave numbers (from 995 cm–1 to 1088 cm–1), which can be attributed to the formation of calcium-silicate-hydrate gel with a lower calcium/silicon ratio.

Pre-treated municipal solid waste bottom ash as alkali-activated mortar precursor

Pre-treated incinerator bottom ash was used as a precursor of alkali-activated mortars. Control mortars were produced using coal fly ash. Different combinations of alkaline activator were tested (sodium oxide/binder ratio (4%, 6%, 8%, 10% and 15%) and silicon dioxide/sodium oxide ratio (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0)) and the influence of these on the mortar's mechanical performance was evaluated. The mortars were tested in both fresh (for density and workability) and hardened states (for dry density, compressive and flexural strengths and modulus of elasticity) after 7, 28, 91 and 182 days. The first stage of work was precursor pre-treatment in a sodium hydroxide solution to prevent the expansion of fresh specimens due to the reaction of aluminium with the alkaline activator. The pre-treatment was effective in preventing excessive hydrogen gas generation during setting, leading to dimensional stability and improved strength. Different optimum sodium oxide contents were observed after 28 days (i.e. 15% for fly ash specimens and 8% for bottom ash specimens). The results of a simplified life-cycle assessment showed that such mixes exhibited lower overall carbon dioxide emissions when compared with cement-based counterparts. However, this trend was reversed with increasing contents of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate.

Development of sustainable, high strength slag based alkali activated pavement quality concrete using agro-industrial wastes: properties and life cycle analysis

ABSTRACT Alkali-activated binder-based composites offer a sustainable alternative to cement-based systems, giving a conservational approach. This research incorporated rice-husk ash (RHA) and waste foundry sand (WFS) into ground-granulated-blast-furnace slag (GGBS)-based alkali-activated high-end pavement-quality concretes, optimising with air-curing for expressways, freeways and runway applications. This study promotes sustainable construction by efficiently utilising agro-industrial wastes (i.e., RHA, GGBS and WFS) promoting a global initiative to decrease environmental impact and to adopt eco-friendly pavement construction methods. This study systematically substitutes the primary binder-GGBS with RHA at 5% intervals. The binder was alkali-activated using measured amounts of liquid sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide flakes prepared at an activator modulus (Ms) of 1.25 by maintaining the sodium oxide dosage of 4.0% with respect to the total binder. In particular, 15% RHA (with 85% GGBS) and 20% WFS (with 80% river sand) satisfy mechanical design standards for workability and strength. A comprehensive life cycle analysis using extensive literature support assesses the environmental impact and sustainability of developed pavement quality composites, showing over 70% less energy use than Portland cement-based pavement mixes. Therefore, employing RHA and WFS in air-cured alkali-activated composite manufacture shows that agro-industrial waste components may be used to make sustainable, cost-effective pavement construction. This study effectively advocates for a shift towards environmentally responsible pavement construction, contributing to a greener, more sustainable future in concrete pavement engineering.

Alkali Activation of Metakaolin and Wollastonite: Reducing Sodium Hydroxide Use and Enhancing Gel Formation through Carbonation

Alkali activated materials (AAMs) offer significant advantages over traditional materials like Portland cement, but require the use of strong alkaline solutions, which can have negative environmental impacts. This study investigates the synthesis of AAMs using metakaolin and wollastonite, aiming to reduce environmental impact by eliminating sodium silicate and using only sodium hydroxide as an activator. The hypothesis is that wollastonite can provide the necessary silicon for the reaction, with calcium from wollastonite potentially balancing the negative charges usually countered by sodium in the alkaline solution. This study compares raw and carbonated wollastonite (AAM-W and AAM-CW) systems, with raw materials carefully characterized and binding networks analyzed using TGA, FT-IR, and XRD. The results show that while wollastonite can reduce the amount of sodium hydroxide needed, this reduction cannot exceed 50%, as higher substitution levels lead to an insufficiently alkaline environment for the reactions. The carbonation of wollastonite enhances the availability of silicon and calcium, promoting the formation of both N-A-S-H and C-A-S-H gels.

Unlocking High Capacity and Reversible Alkaline Iron Redox Using Silicate-Sodium Hydroxide Hybrid Electrolytes.

Alkaline iron (Fe) batteries are attractive due to the high abundance, low cost, and multiple valent states of Fe but show limited columbic efficiency and storage capacity when forming electrochemically inert Fe3O4 on discharging and parasitic H2 on charging. Herein, sodium silicate is found to promote Fe(OH)2/FeOOH against Fe(OH)2/Fe3O4 conversions. Electrochemical experiments, operando X-ray characterization, and atomistic simulations reveal that improved Fe(OH)2/FeOOH conversion originates from (i) strong interaction between sodium silicate and iron oxide and (ii) silicate-induced strengthening of hydrogen-bond networks in electrolytes that inhibits water transport. Furthermore, the silicate additive suppresses hydrogen evolution by impairing energetics of water dissociation and hydroxyl de-sorption on iron surfaces. This new silicate-assisted redox chemistry mitigates H2 and Fe3O4 formation, improving storage capacity (199 mAh g-1 in half-cells) and coulombic efficiency (94 % after 400 full-cell cycles), paving a path to realizing green battery systems built from earth-abundant materials.

Investigation of Changes in Tooth Colour After the Use of Different Aligners.

Clear aligner treatment is an orthodontic treatment that is custom-made with 3D printers without the use of conventional metal or porcelain wires and brackets. It is a modern orthodontic method used to correct tooth positions that need to be corrected aesthetically and functionally. Aim This study aimed to compare the discolouration of teeth and clear aligners after 15 days of full-time use of clear aligners. Materials and methods The 20 patients in the study group had used clear aligners for 45 days, including three different clear aligners for 15 days. In addition, 20 patients were included as a control group to measure the difference in tooth discolouration. Retaining attachments using G-Aenial (GC Corp, Tokyo, Japan) and 3M ESPE (St. Paul, MN, USA) flowable composites were placed crosswise to each patient in the distal regions of all lateral and canine teeth. The performance of three aligner plates (Zendura Flex (Bay Materials LLC, Fremont, CA, USA); Duran (ScheuDental GmbH, Iserlohn, Germany); and Taglus (Laxmi Dental Export Pvt. Ltd, Mumbai, India)), two fluid composite attachments, and two clear aligner cleaners regarding discoloration were tested. Each aligner was used for 15 days, and then the patient was moved to the next aligner. Colour change on the aligners and the patients' teeth were assessed from the canine to the middle third and mid-plane of the canine tooth using a VITA Easyshade V spectrophotometer (Bad Säckingen, Germany). An aligner cleaner was used immediately after the patients used their clear aligners, and then the measurements of the aligner color values were completed. The 120 aligners obtained were divided into two groups. Sixty aligners were treated with Fresh Guard (Efferdent, Lynchburg, VA, USA), and the other 60 were treated with Corega (GlaxoSmithKline, London, UK) tablets and stored in a glass of water. Results The colour stability of G-Aenial Flo was higher than that of the 3M ESPE fluid composite (p=0.040 and p=0.024). Our study determined that staining occurred in all the teeth we measured as a result of using aligner. Fresh Guard aligner cleaner caused more discoloration on Zendura and Duran aligners than Corega aligner cleaner (p<0.05). Taglus plaque was found to have more discoloration than Zendura and Duran aligner (p<0.05). Conclusion In conclusion, Duran clear aligners are preferable to other clear aligners in terms of discoloration. In addition, G-Aenial Flo can be recommended as an attachment or fluid composite because of its better color stability results.

Study on properties and simulation application scenarios of flame retarded modified konjac glucomannan organic and inorganic composite aerogel

In this paper, a new organic-inorganic biomass composite aerogel was prepared by freeze-drying method with glucomannan, hydrophilic isocyanate, water-soluble flame retardant, and water glass as raw materials. Biomass Konjac glucose mannan (KGM) was used as the main network framework, KGM was chemically cross-linked and alkali-cross-linked with hydrophilic isocyanate and Na2SiO3 solution, and flame retardant modified with water-soluble flame retardant and water glass. The microstructure showed an obvious organic-inorganic interpenetrating network structure. The compressive strength of sample K2S4P2 was 4.751 ± 0.089 MPa, and the compression modulus of sample K2S4P1B modified by boric acid hydrolysis of Na2SiO3 was 63.76 ± 1.81 × 103 m2/s2. The introduction of boron ions contributes to the thermal stability of organic components. The peak and total heat release rates of sample K2S4P1A4 decreased by 80.3 % and 50.8 %, respectively. In addition, the thermal simulation calculation of the external wall in winter and summer using ANSYS software showed that the thickness of the insulation layer with the best insulation effect is 40–60 mm. The organic-inorganic composite aerogel provides a simple and environmentally friendly method for the application of external wall insulation systems in low-energy buildings with both mechanical properties and flame retardant properties.

Influence of Steel and Poly Vinyl Alcohol Fibers on the Development of High-Strength Geopolymer Concrete

The present study focuses on the mechanical performance of steel and polyvinyl alcohol fibers embedded in the geopolymer matrix. A high-strength geopolymer concrete with fly ash, slag and silica fume as precursors and sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate solutions as activators has been tested for its strength in compression and flexure. The influence of fibers on flowability, long-term shrinkage and sulphuric acid attack on the geopolymer concrete has also been studied. The dosage of fibers was maintained at 1%, 2% and 3% by volume, and fibers of length 13 mm have been used in the study. Results indicate that slag with 3% steel fibers by volume had a predominant influence on the strength development of steel fiber-reinforced geopolymer concrete, yielding a compressive strength of 107 MPa after 28 days. Blast furnace slag resulted in increasing the shrinkage of concrete due to rapid gel formation owing to the presence of calcium ions, although the fibers helped reduce the shrinkage to some extent. The strength of steel fiber geopolymer concrete was superior to PVA fiber geopolymer concrete; however, after an acid attack, the strength of steel fiber geopolymer concrete was reduced more than PVA fiber geopolymer concrete due to the enhanced corrosion resistance of PVA fibers.

Study on cementitious grout for scour protection of offshore wind turbine foundations

To study scour-resistant applicability, 6–10% mass ratio of polyurethane (PU) was added to sulphoaluminate cement (SAC) and ordinary Portland cement (OPC) grouts to generate OPCPU and SACPU. Sodium silicate (SS) with slurry volume ratio of 1:1–5:1 was added to SAC and OPC grouts to generate OPCSS and SACSS. The water-cement ratio (w/c) of grout was 0.8–1.5. Fresh-state properties and mechanical properties were investigated. Hydrated minerals and microstructures were analyzed, scouring tests were conducted considering key formulations. The results indicated that SACSS and OPCSS have a shorter setting time and higher strength, which makes them suitable as scour resistance materials. At the w/c of 1.0, OPCSS with a volume ratio of 3:1 and SACPU with 6% PU were selected for scour resistance tests. It showed that maximum scour depths and sediment transports were 7.0–12.2 and 1.1–1.2% as those without reinforcing conditions. The critical shear stress on the seabed under reinforcement is ∼103 times greater than the bed shear stress. This inhibits the occurrence of scouring. The study evaluated the applicability of cementitious reinforcement for scour resistance. This study analyzed material and mechanical properties, hydrated minerals, and microstructures, and conducted scour tests to optimize grouting material ratios for seabed scour protection, providing references for soil reinforcement and grouting protection.

Statistical Evaluation of Flotation Behavior of Chalcopyrite in the Presence of SIPX and Acetoacetic Acid n-Octyl Ester as a Novel Collector Blend: A Sustainable Approach

The chalcopyrite deposit in Malanjkhand, India, is the largest copper ore producer in the country. However, its flotation performance has room for improvement. This study used standard flotation experiments using a mechanical flotation cell using a conventional collecting reagent and a collector blend consisting of xanthate and ester. A three-factor, three-level Box-Behnken design was used to statistically evaluate the experimental design. The obtained data were analyzed using an ANOVA, cubic plots, and response surface methods. The goal was to evaluate the effects and interactions of three key process parameters in chalcopyrite flotation: the dosages of sodium silicate (depressant), sodium isopropyl xanthate (collector), and acetoacetic acid n-Octyl ester (co-collector/modifier). The results implied that introducing acetoacetic acid n-Octyl ester along with minor tweaks in the dosages of sodium isopropyl xanthate helped increase copper grades by at least 15%, with good recovery percentiles. Among the three parameters tested, the copper’s grade and recovery were considerably positively influenced by the AoE dosage in the collector blend. Employing 0.006 kg/t sodium silicate and 0.0065 kg/t sodium isopropyl xanthate with 0.005 kg/t of acetoacetic acid n-Octyl ester, an optimum copper recovery of 88.87% could be achieved. However, with a sodium silicate dosage of 0.0048 kg/t, a SIPX dosage of 0.008 kg/t, and an AoE dosage of 0.005 kg/t, optimized copper grade (1.55%) could be achieved, which is a 78.1% increase from the feed sample grade. To validate the expected results, verification experiments were carried out, and the experimental findings were found to be on at par with the statistical model predictions. Furthermore, the calculated SPI value of 0.0000147cap Kg−1 for a global index per resident lies between 0 and 1.

Fresh and Hardened Properties of Alkali-Activated POFA-GGBFS Pastes Cured in Ambient Temperature – An Initial Mix Design

Weak soils are characterised by their high compressibility and low shear strength, which requires stabilisation to improve their compaction and strength characteristics before being used for construction projects. Recent trends in soil stabilisation show an increased interest in the application of waste-derived geopolymers as low-carbon materials to address the carbon emission problem related to cement production. This paper presents the preliminary findings of using Palm Oil Fuel Ash (POFA) and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) binary blends as geopolymer precursor materials. These binary waste material blends were activated using alkaline solutions, namely Sodium Hydroxide (NH) and Sodium Silicate (NS), to synthesise geopolymers at ambient temperatures. Three main factors were considered for the optimisation of the geopolymer mix design, as recommended by past research: alkali equivalent (8-11.5%), activator modulus (0-0.7), and slag replacement (fixed at 30%). Alkali equivalent and activator modulus parameters were varied and tested to establish its initial and final setting times, workability and strength properties, while the slag replacement percentage was set at 30%. This study aimed to determine the most influential parameters to produce the geopolymer material with the highest compressive strength and satisfactory setting times and workability. Single-source alkali activators (NH only) used on POFA-GGBFS produced specimens with smaller flow diameters, longer initial and final setting times, and lower compressive strength than specimens activated with NH and NS. Geopolymer specimens synthesised with NH and NS produce stiffer compounds possessing higher compressive strength values and explosive-type failure modes due to their higher silica content. At ambient temperatures, TM-Mix 2 (7% alkali equivalent and 0.7 activator modulus) produced the highest compressive strength value of 67.3 MPa at 28 days curing, flow diameter of 227 mm, with the initial and final setting time of 25 minutes and 45 minutes, respectively. Consequently, the results show that the preliminary POFA-GGBFS geopolymer mix design could produce sustainably sourced geopolymer compounds with adequate strength and acceptable setting time and workability. This study is part of a current investigation to further optimise the POFA-GGBFS mix design for the purpose of weak soil stabilisation.
