Immunological assay using a solid-state pore with a low limit of detection

Emerging infectious diseases, cancer, and other diseases are quickly tested mainly via immune reactions based on specific molecular recognition between antigens and antibodies. By changing the diameter of solid-state pores, biomolecules of various sizes can be rapidly detected at the single-molecule level. The combination of immunoreactions and solid-state pores paves the way for an efficient testing method with high specificity and sensitivity. The challenge in developing this method is achieving quantitative analysis using solid-state pores. Here, we demonstrate a method with a low limit of detection for testing tumor markers using a combination of immunoreactions and solid-state pore technology. Quantitative analysis of the mixing ratio of two and three beads with different diameters was achieved with an error rate of up to 4.7%. The hybrid solid-state pore and immunoreaction methods with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and anti-PSA antibody-modified beads achieved a detection limit of 24.9 fM PSA in 30 min. The hybrid solid-state pore and immunoreaction enabled the rapid development of easy-to-use tests with lower limit of detection and greater throughput than commercially available immunoassay for point-of-care testing.

Boosting room-temperature electrocaloric performance in B-site complex antiferroelectrics: A synergistic design approach

As an emerging eco-friendly solid-state refrigeration technology boasting high energy conversion efficiency, there is a pressing demand for ferroelectrics exhibiting significant electrocaloric effect (ECE) at room temperature (RT) for refrigeration applications. In this study, guided by phase-field simulation, we explore the potential of B-site complex Pb[Mg(1–x)ZnxW]1/2O3 (PMZW100x) antiferroelectrics (AFE) to deliver promising symmetric positive and negative ECE near ambient temperature. The first-order AFE-paraelectric (PE) phase transition occurring around 50 °C induces a substantial change in heat quantity and yields prominent ECE upon electric excitation. Maxwell characterization reveals a potential combination of positive and negative ECE, showcasing significant advantages in cooling capacity. Given the technical limitations of existing direct methods for testing under elevated electric fields, low-field ECE is validated using the heat flux approach to ensure the legitimacy of results. Direct measurements demonstrate a high positive ΔT value of 2.76 K at 52 °C and a negative ΔT of –2.91 K at 44 °C (under 140 kV cm–1), surpassing traditional PbZrO3 bulk materials. The coexistence of substantial positive and negative ΔT near RT in PMZW100x offers a new avenue for developing highly efficient solid-state cooling devices.

Loss and decoherence in superconducting circuits on silicon: Insights from electron spin resonance

Solid-state devices used for quantum computation and quantum sensing applications are adversely affected by loss and noise caused by spurious, charged two-level systems (TLS) and stray paramagnetic spins. These two sources of noise are interconnected, exacerbating the impact on circuit performance. We use an on-chip electron spin resonance (ESR) technique, with niobium nitride (NbN) superconducting resonators, to study surface spins on silicon and the effect of postfabrication surface treatments. We identify two distinct spin species that are characterized by different spin-relaxation times and respond selectively to various surface treatments (annealing and hydrofluoric acid). Only one of the two spin species has a significant impact on the TLS-limited resonator quality factor at low-power (near-single-photon) excitation. We observe a three- to fivefold reduction in the total density of spins after surface treatments and demonstrate the efficacy of ESR spectroscopy in developing strategies to mitigate loss and decoherence in quantum systems. Process intensification of microwave-assisted freeze-drying by frequency adjustment in real-time using solid-state technology

In microwave-assisted processes, solid-state microwave technology enables control of the electromagnetic field, which can be used for process intensification. This work investigates the impact of real-time frequency adjustment on microwave-assisted freeze-drying (MFD). Frequency-based control concepts were applied in experiments with tylose gel as a food model product in a laboratory-scale plant. By applying energy-efficient resonant frequencies based on feedback related to product state, the drying time was reduced by 24.2% compared to conventional freeze-drying (CFD) due to increases in energy efficiency. Comparable temperature profiles, residual moistures, and ascorbic acid retentions to CFD were achieved. However, structural degradation occurred with MFD in up to 10.4% of the samples. The degradation could be counteracted by more refined frequency and power application. In summary, this work demonstrates the high potential of frequency-based control for MFD process intensification.

Rational design of hybrid electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium battery based on investigation of lithium-ion transport mechanism

Lithium all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) are a promising technology for achieving high energy density, long cycle life, and safe rechargeable battery systems. Among these, Li ASSBs using solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have gained attention owing to their processability, lightweight nature, flexibility, and favorable electrode contacts. However, SPEs have low ionic conductivity, low Li+ transference number, and lack mechanical strength, limiting cell performance. Therefore, the present study focuses on the development of hybrid polymer electrolytes (HPEs) by incorporating Li1+xAlxTi2-x(PO4)3 (LATP) of Li/Na superionic conductor-type materials into SPEs. The HPEs with LATP 10 wt% exhibited significant improvements with an ionic conductivity of 7.23 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 45 °C and a Li+ transference number of 0.61. Density functional theory calculations supported the enhanced Li-ion migration through the polymer-LATP interface achieved by the optimized LATP content. The addition of LATP particles enhanced the mechanical strength of the electrolytes, effectively suppressing dendrite growth, resulting in a 66.65 % capacity retention after 320 cycles, highlighting the crucial role of high-performance HPEs in advanced ASSBs. By addressing the limitations of SPEs, HPEs offer promising opportunities to unlock the full potential of solid-state battery technologies for various energy storage systems.

Donor-acceptor bulk-heterojunction sensitizer for efficient solid-state infrared-to-visible photon up-conversion

Solid-state infrared-to-visible photon up-conversion is important for spectral-tailoring applications. However, existing up-conversion systems not only suffer from low efficiencies and a need for high excitation intensity, but also exhibit a limited selection of materials and complex fabrication processes. Herein, we propose a sensitizer with a bulk-heterojunction structure, comprising both an energy donor and an energy acceptor, for triplet-triplet annihilation up-conversion devices. The up-conversion occurs through charge separation at the donor-acceptor interface, followed by the formation of charge transfer state between the energy donor and annihilator following the spin statistics. The bulk-heterojunction sensitizer ensures efficient charge generation and low charge recombination. Hence, we achieve a highly efficient solid-state up-conversion device with 2.20% efficiency and low excitation intensity (10 mW cm−2) through a one-step solution method. We also demonstrate bright up-conversion devices on highly-flexible large-area substrates. This study introduces a simple and scalable platform strategy for fabricating efficient up-conversion devices.

Study on the hydrate growth characteristics and rheology of silica-containing sand water-in-oil emulsion system

Understanding the transportability of silica-sand-containing hydrate slurries is crucial for production safety of non-consolidated natural gas hydrate reservoirs, especially when solid-state fluidization technology is utilized. Despite some research on silica sand and marine sediments’ influence on hydrate formation kinetics, rheological studies are scarce for systems with silica sands. The formation process of cyclopentane hydrates under the coexistence of hydrophilic silica particles and surfactants were observed. The effects of the concentration and particle size of silica sands as well as the water cut and surfactant concentration of emulsion on the rheological properties of hydrate slurries were investigated using a rheometer. The results indicated: (1) Hydrophilic sand aggregates were entrapped in water droplets, indirectly affecting the oil–water contact area due to the increase in water droplet volume, which was conducive to the combination of alkanes and water molecules to form a hydrate shell; silica particles provided nucleation sites at the oil–water interface to promote the adsorption and aggregation of cyclopentane molecules. (2) The synergistic effect of silica sand and surfactants significantly shortened the induction time of hydrates and increased the viscosity of the slurry. As the concentration of silica sand (1 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt%) increased, the induction time of hydrate formation decreased by 44.8 min. Within the concentration range below 5 wt%, the viscosity of the slurry increased as the concentration increased, with an amplitude of 13830.7 mPa·s. The induction time of hydrate formation decreased with increasing silica sand particle size (2 μm, 6.5 μm, 12 μm), but the size of silica sand particles had no significant effect on the viscosity of the slurry. (3) Hydrate slurries in all systems exhibited shear-thinning behavior. There was no obvious relationship between the yield stress of slurry under different silica sand concentrations. However, the yield stress of the slurry was inversely proportional to the size of silica sand particles. The yield stress decreased by 141.13 Pa when the size of silica sand particles increased from 2 μm to 12 μm. Overall, this study highlighted the influence of silica sand presence on flow safety assurance in solid-state fluidization technology.

UPQC-Based Hybrid Technique to Reduce Power Quality Problems in the Photovoltaic Grid System

In addition to Power Quality (PQ) problems caused by solid state devices in the distribution side of grid connected Photo Voltaic (PV) system, quality of power also suffers in the source side by the usage of converters. Generally, PQ problems mitigation strategy has turned into a critical issue in grid-connected PV systems. This paper proposes a control topology for PQ issues mitigation scheme in grid connected PV systems. The primary goal of this study is to enhance the PQ in power distribution system through eradicating the voltage interruption, voltage swell and sag as well as voltage fluctuation. To accomplish these changes, Unified Power Quality Conditioners (UPQCs) with controllers were utilized. Then the faults are mitigated by the utilization of UPQC with Tree Seeds Algorithm (TSA) — Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Interference System (ANFIS). At first, the normal properties of the grid-connected PV systems are dissected. From that point forward, a few interruptions are made in the system and the abnormal characteristics are analyzed. Then the abnormal characteristics of PQ problems are diminished in the utilization of UPQC and TSA–ANFIS controllers. UPQC is one of the best filters topologies which can mitigate and control all PQ problems. The combined algorithms of TSA-ANFIS are used to keep the dc-link voltage in UPQC at consistent level. The proposed hybrid approach is executed in MATLAB/Simulink platform and the performance is studied. Further, the proposed method is compared with existing Elephant Herding Optimization (EHO) technique and also with hybrid EHO-ANFIS techniques. The comparison results showed that the proposed technique is superior to the EHO and EHO-ANFIS techniques.

Magnetic anisotropy and GGG substrate stray field in YIG films down to millikelvin temperatures

Quantum magnonics investigates the quantum-mechanical properties of magnons, such as quantum coherence or entanglement for solid-state quantum information technologies at the nanoscale. The most promising material for quantum magnonics is the ferrimagnetic yttrium iron garnet (YIG), which hosts magnons with the longest lifetimes. YIG films of the highest quality are grown on a paramagnetic gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrate. The literature has reported that ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) frequencies of YIG/GGG decrease at temperatures below 50 K despite the increase in YIG magnetization. We investigated a 97 nm-thick YIG film grown on 500 μm-thick GGG substrate through a series of experiments conducted at temperatures as low as 30 mK, and using both analytical and numerical methods. Our findings suggest that the primary factor contributing to the FMR frequency shift is the stray magnetic field created by the partially magnetized GGG substrate. This stray field is antiparallel to the applied external field and is highly inhomogeneous, reaching up to 40 mT in the center of the sample. At temperatures below 500 mK, the GGG field exhibits a saturation that cannot be described by the standard Brillouin function for a paramagnet. Including the calculated GGG field in the analysis of the FMR frequency versus temperature dependence allowed the determination of the cubic and uniaxial anisotropies. We find that the total crystallographic anisotropy increases more than three times with the decrease in temperature down to 2 K. Our findings enable accurate predictions of the YIG/GGG magnetic systems behavior at low and ultralow millikelvin temperatures, crucial for developing quantum magnonic devices.

Structural, optical and luminescent properties of Tm3+-doped phosphate oxyfluoride glasses for blue emission solid state devices

In this work, the visible luminescence of P2O5-KF-Al2O3 glasses with Tm2O3 was studied. The Tm3+ ion can have a strong blue emission, which allows the development of LEDs in this color region. This study refers to the synthesis of oxyfluorophosphate glasses, 38P2O5+(50-x)KF+12Al2O3+xTm2O3 (PKAl:Tm), with x = 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 mol%, by the melt-quenching method. The prepared materials showed amorphous characteristics verified by XRD data. The absorption spectra shown six main bands characteristic of Tm3+ ions, from ground state 3H6 to excited levels 3F4, 3H4, 3H5, 3F3,2, 1G4 and 1D2, in which the intensities increased with the concentration of Tm2O3. In the FTIR spectra, it was verified that the profiles of the PKAl samples are similar to glasses based on phosphate systems. The Judd-Ofelt parameters were calculated, where for PKAl glasses the trend was Ω2>Ω4>Ω6. The excitation spectra of PKAl:Tm glasses shown an intense band centered at 358 nm (3H6→1D2). The luminescence spectra with excitation at 358 nm shown two bands at 453 nm (1D2→3F4), and 480 nm (1G4→3H6); the highest emission intensity was observed to the sample doped with 0.75 mol% of Tm2O3. The calculated CIE diagram shown that the doped samples have coordinates close to the primary blue color, which favors the application for the development of blue LEDs and wLEDs. The decay curves for the 1D2 level were fitted by single exponential with lifetime values decreasing with increasing concentration of Tm2O3. These results show that the PKAl:Tm glasses are potential candidates for applications in LEDs.

Preface

The purpose of the three-day 2024 3rd International Conference on Electronic Information and Communication Engineering (EICE 2024), held via virtual form during January 12th to 14th, 2024 in Guangzhou China, was to create a timely forum for multi-disciplinary discussions related to the recent developments on electronic information and communication engineering. As usual, the program of the conference mainly consisted of keynote speeches, oral and poster presentations, with the former including speeches delivered by three sophisticated professors from related research areas. The keynote speeches are: i) Recent Progress of Millimeter-wave Circuits Using Groove Gap Waveguide Technology given by Prof. Wenjie Feng (South China University of Technology, China); ii) 6G Satellite-ground Massive MIMO Communication: Key Technologies and Development Prospect given by Prof. Zhiyong Luo (Sun Yat-sen University, China); iii) Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Enhanced Wireless Network: Further Developments and Future Outlooks given by Assoc. Prof. Feng Ke (South China University of Technology, China). In the framework of experimental and theoretical approaches, the Conference gathered about 100 delegates from all over the world and addressed a number of highly relevant aspects of electronic information and communication engineering. Covering topics on Microelectronics and Solid-State Electronics, Sixth Generation Mobile Communication Technology (6G), Communication Electronic Circuit and Technology, Information and Communication Engineering, Digital Signal Processing, etc., the selected contributions of this volume provide guidance for future interdisciplinary developments in related fields. We received quantities of manuscripts of invited papers and other contributions presented at the Conference. All of these papers have gone through a rigorous peer review process and are collected in the Conference Proceedings. High-precision high-speed nanopore ping-pong control system based on field programmable gate array.

"Molecular ping-pong," emerging as a control strategy in solid-state nanopore technology, presents a highly promising approach for repetitive measurements of single biomolecules, such as DNA. This paper introduces a high-precision, high-speed nanopore molecular ping-pong control system consisting of a home-built trans-impedance amplifier (TIA), a control system based on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), and a LabVIEW program operating on the host personal computer. Through feedback compensation and post-stage boosting, the TIA achieves a high bandwidth of about 200kHz with a gain of 100 MΩ, along with low input-referred current noise of 1.6 × 10-4pA2/Hz at 1kHz and 1.1 × 10-3pA2/Hz at 100kHz. The FPGA-based control system demonstrates a minimum overall response time (tdelay) of 6.5 μs from the analog input current signal trigger to the subsequent reversal of the analog output drive voltage signal, with a control precision of 1 μs. Additionally, a LabVIEW program has been developed to facilitate rapid data exchange and communication with the FPGA program, enabling real-time signal monitoring, parameter adjustment, and data storage. Successful recapture of individual DNA molecules at various tdelay, resulting in an improvement in capture rate by up to 2 orders of magnitude, has been demonstrated. With unprecedented control precision and capture efficiency, this system provides robust technical support and opens novel research avenues for nanopore single-molecule sensing and manipulation.

Synthesis, structure and photoluminescent properties of far-red Y3Ga5O12:Cr3+ phosphors

Far-red (FR) photosensitive pigment (PFR) is vital for plant photomorphogenesis. Phosphor-converted (pc) LEDs are the next-generation FR light devices. How to obtain FR-emitting phosphors with a good quantum efficiency, suitable photoluminescence and high thermal stability is still difficult. Herein, we optimize the Y3Ga5O12:Cr3+ FR phosphor, which has an emission peak at 711 nm and a full width at half maximum of 74 nm, closing to the PFR absorption band. By adopting the solid-state sintering technology, the internal quantum efficiency reaches 85.5 %, more than 1.5 times higher than that reported by the liquid reaction (55 %). Furthermore, the external quantum efficiency reaches as high as 33.1 %, indicating the promising application in FR-LEDs.

Self-assembled monolayers of reduced graphene oxide for robust 3D-printed supercapacitors

Herein, additive manufacturing, which is extremely promising in different sectors, has been adopted in the electrical energy storage field to fabricate efficient materials for supercapacitor applications. In particular, Al2O3-, steel-, and Cu-based microparticles have been used for the realization of 3D self-assembling materials covered with reduced graphene oxide to be processed through additive manufacturing. Functionalization of the particles with amino groups and a subsequent "self-assembly" step with graphene oxide, which was contextually partially reduced to rGO, was carried out. To further improve the electrical conductivity and AM processability, the composites were coated with a polyaniline-dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid complex and further blended with PLA. Afterward, they were extruded in the form of filaments, printed through the fused deposition modeling technique, and assembled into symmetrical solid-state devices. Electrochemical tests showed a maximum mass capacitance of 163 F/g, a maximum energy density of 15 Wh/Kg at 10 A/g, as well as good durability (85% capacitance retention within 5000 cycles) proving the effectiveness of the preparation and the efficiency of the as-manufactured composites.

Impact of Stress and Material Porosity on Double Boost DC-DC Converter Technology to Enhance Field-Effect Heterotransistors and Heterodiodes Density

Currently, several critical issues in solid-state electronics, such as improving the performance, reliability and density of integrated circuits elements like diodes, field-effect transistors, and bipolar transistors are being intensively addressed. One effective approach to reduce the dimensions of integrated circuits elements is to manufacture them in thin film heterostructures with an optimal manufacturing regime. In this paper, we explore methods to increase the density of field-effect heterotransistors and heterodiodes in the framework of a double boost DC-DC converter. We consider manufacturing this converter in a heterostructure with a specific configuration, where several required areas of the heterostructure should be doped by diffusion or ion implantation. Subsequently, the dopant and radiation defects should be annealed using an optimized scheme. Based on this approach, we provide recommendations for determining the optimal annealing time to achieve the best compromise between increasing density of integrated circuits elements and minimizing local overheating during their operation. We also propose a method to reduce the mismatch-induced stress in the heterostructure. We present an analytical approach to analyze mass and heat transport in heterostructures during the manufacturing of integrated circuits, accounting for mismatch-induced stress. This approach allows for the consideration of spatial and temporal variations in the parameters of technological processes, as well as their nonlinearity.

Friction Stir Welding Benefits Technique over Other Welding Techniques of Dissimilar Metals

Abstract: Due to the low heat input situation, solid state welding (SSW) has demonstrated higher potential for integrating a variety of equivalent and dissimilar material combinations. The temperature stays below the melting point of the source materials throughout the solid-state welding process. Compared to fusion welding, solid state welding offers the highest quality. Aeronautics, nuclear, space, and aviation are just a few of the industrial production sectors that utilize the solid-state welding technology. Diffusion welding, explosion welding, friction welding, forge welding, cold welding, role welding, hot pressure welding, and ultrasonic welding are just a few of the SSW techniques covered in the current article. This study looks at a variety of SSW kinds and solid-state welding applications. This study examines many types of SSW and the applications of solid-state welding. Current Study includes the pros and cons of other welding techniques over friction stir welding.

Parametric analysis of hybrid elastocaloric – CO2 cooling system

This study examines the potential application of elastocaloric refrigeration (eC) technology for the subcooling of CO2 in transcritical single-stage refrigeration cycles. Elastocaloric refrigeration, a solid-state refrigeration technology, possesses significant untapped potential due to its environmentally friendly characteristics, primarily its lack of harmful operational fluids. However, its direct stand-alone application has been limited due to the relatively small temperature spans produced by current proof-of-concept elastocaloric devices. Efforts of the scientific community have focused on extending the temperature difference that eC systems can provide, while this work offers an alternative to that challenge, offering an application solution for the current state of technology. The study proposes for the first-time a unique integration of eC technology and CO2 cooling systems, aiming to capitalise on the respective weaknesses of these technologies and transform them into strengths. In the proposed solution, an eC device operates as an external agent to subcool CO2, with the objective of enhancing the energy performance of the refrigeration system. This concept is motivated by the recent advancements in CO2 cooling systems and the growing recognition of subcooling as a promising method to boost the performance of such systems. The hybrid system’s performance was evaluated across various ambient temperatures, ranging from 20 °C to 35 °C, and at an evaporating level of −15 °C. It is evaluated by means of a calculation model based on the data obtained experimentally from an elastocaloric regenerator and an experimental CO2 plant. The system‘s energy efficiency was analysed in comparison to a non-subcooled CO2 cycle, and a third cycle comprising both eC subcooling and an expander for energy recovery from the expansion process. The results demonstrated a considerable increase in the coefficient of performance (COP) with the use of eC subcooling: increments of 2.7 % at 20 °C, 4.5 % at 25 °C, 9.6 % at 30 °C and 13.1 % at 35 °C, where more significant increments were observed at higher ambient temperatures. The eC Subcooler with expander reaches increments of 7.5 %, 11.1 %, 18.1 % and 22.2 % respectively. Additionally, the eC subcooler allowed a reduction in the optimum gas-cooler pressure by up to 5 bar at the highest environment temperature. Despite these promising results, the study underscores the necessity for further optimisation and improvement of elastocaloric devices. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of energy recovery strategies from the expansion process in transcritical CO2 cooling system.

Data-driven high elastocaloric NiMn-based shape memory alloy optimization with machine learning

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have the potential to improve the efficiency of solid-state refrigeration technology through coupled excitation of multiple thermal effects. Aiming to achieve high elastocaloric NiMn-based SMAs, this paper utilized machine learning to predict the adiabatic temperature change and first-principle calculations to elucidate the mechanism. Based on the optimal XGB Regressor model, the Ni50Mn33Ti17 SMA through directional solidification is predicted to have the highest adiabatic temperature change of 10 K (test temperature = 298 K, applied stress = 300 MPa). In addition, the volume change ratio after martensitic transformation reaches 2.375 % with first-principles calculations, which is expected to provide sufficient entropy and thus obtain an excellent elastocaloric effect. This study provides an available pathway to design and optimize the elastocaloric property of NiMn-based SMAs.

Observation of heat pumping effect by radiative shuttling

Heat shuttling phenomenon is characterized by the presence of a non-zero heat flow between two bodies without net thermal bias on average. It was initially predicted in the context of nonlinear heat conduction within atomic lattices coupled to two time-oscillating thermostats. Recent theoretical works revealed an analog of this effect for heat exchanges mediated by thermal photons between two solids having a temperature dependent emissivity. In this paper, we present the experimental proof of this effect using systems made with composite materials based on phase change materials. By periodically modulating the temperature of one of two solids we report that the system akin to heat pumping with a controllable heat flow direction. Additionally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of a simultaneous modulation of two temperatures to control both the strength and direction of heat shuttling by exploiting the phase delay between these temperatures. These results show that this effect is promising for an active thermal management of solid-state technology, to cool down solids, to insulate them from their background or to amplify heat exchanges.
