Metal complex-based TADF: design, characterization, and lighting devices.

The development of novel, efficient and cost-effective emitters for solid-state lighting devices (SSLDs) is ubiquitous to meet the increasingly demanding needs of advanced lighting technologies. In this context, the emergence of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials has stunned the photonics community. In particular, inorganic TADF material-based compounds can be ad hoc engineered by chemical modification of the coordinated ligands and the type of metal centre, allowing control of their ultimate photo-/electroluminescence properties, while providing a viable emitter platform for enhancing the efficiency of state-of-the-art organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). By presenting an overview of the state of the art of all metal complex-based TADF compounds, this review aims to provide a comprehensive, authoritative and critical reference for their design, characterization and device application, highlighting the advantages and drawbacks for the chemical, photonic and optoelectronic communities involved in this interdisciplinary research field.

Information is presented about the deceased Alexander Stepanovich Bugayov, DrSci Phys&Math, professor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1994 in the Department of Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Automation, full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 2000 in the Department of Nanotechnology and Information Technology (Section of Computing, Location, Telecommunication Systems and Element Base), founder of the Department of Solid-state Electronics and Radiophysics of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Head of the Department of Vacuum Electronics and At the same time, he is the scientific director of the MIPT Center for Open Systems and High Technologies, Head of the Laboratory of Wave Electronics of the V.A. Kotelnikov Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Deputy Director of the State Research Institute of Electronic and Ion Optics, Chief Researcher of the Department of Scientific and Innovative Activities of the South Ural State University. Professor of the Computer Engineering Department of the Higher School of Economics, Professor of the St. Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation, an outstanding specialist in the field of condensed matter physics, semiconductor physics, acoustic and spin-wave electronics, computer science and mathematical modeling of semiconductor and solid-state information processing devices. The main biographical data are given: studies at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (Faculty of Physical and Quantum Electronics), postgraduate studies and work at MIPT, defense of a PhD (physical and mathematical sciences) dissertation, authorship of more than 250 scientific papers in scientific journals, participation in Russian and international conferences and seminars, editorial work in scientific journals. Work as a member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, membership in various Russian and international scientific societies and expert councils.

Solid-State Nanopores for Spatially Resolved Chemical Neuromodulation.

Most neural prosthetic devices are based on electrical stimulation, although the modulation of neuronal activity by a localized chemical delivery would better mimic physiological synaptic machinery. In the past decade, various drug delivery approaches attempted to emulate synaptic transmission, although they were hampered by poor retention of their cargo while reaching the target destination, low spatial resolution, and poor biocompatibility and stability of the materials involved. Here, we propose a planar solid-state device for multisite neurotransmitter translocation at the nanoscale consisting of a nanopatterned ceramic membrane connected to a reservoir designed to store neurotransmitters. We achieved diffusion-mediated glutamate stimulation of primary neurons, while we showed the feasibility to translocate other molecules through the pores by either pressure or diffusion, proving the versatility of the proposed technology. Finally, the system proved to be a promising neuronal stimulation interface in mice and nonhuman primates ex vivo, paving the way toward a biomimetic chemical stimulation in neural prosthetics and brain machine interfaces.

Systematic Review on Additive Friction Stir Deposition: Materials, Processes, Monitoring and Modelling

Emerging solid-state additive manufacturing (AM) technologies have recently garnered significant interest because they can prevent the defects that other metal AM processes may have due to sintering or melting. Additive friction stir deposition (AFSD), also known as MELD, is a solid-state AM technology that utilises bar feedstocks as the input material and frictional–deformational heat as the energy source. AFSD offers high deposition rates and is a promising technique for achieving defect-free material properties like wrought aluminium, magnesium, steel, and titanium alloys. While it offers benefits in terms of productivity and material properties, its low technology readiness level prevents widespread adoption. Academics and engineers are conducting research across various subfields to better understand the process parameters, material properties, process monitoring, and modelling of the AFSD technology. Yet, it is also crucial to compile and compare the research findings from past studies on this new technology to gain a comprehensive understanding and pinpoint future research paths. This paper aims to present a comprehensive review of AFSD focusing on process parameters, material properties, monitoring, and modelling. In addition to examining data from existing studies, this paper identifies areas where research is lacking and suggests paths for future research efforts.

Solution-based processing of Ge2Sb2Se4Te optical phase change materials

Phase change materials (PCMs) are important building blocks in solid-state memory and photonic devices. Solution-based processing promises large-area, cost-effective, conformal coating of optical PCMs (O-PCMs) for photonic applications. In this work, a solution processing route was developed for Ge2Sb2Se4Te1 (GSST), a target PCM of interest due to its large optical contrast, broadband transparency, and improved glass-forming capability. An alkahest solvent mixture of ethanedithiol and ethylenediamine was used as a solvent system to fabricate solution-derived GSST thin films and films from these solutions were prepared and characterized using SEM, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy.

Tunable Blue-Light-Emitting Organic-Inorganic Zinc Halides with Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence and Room-Temperature Phosphorescence.

Hybrid metal halides have received great interests in the field of solid-state lighting technologies due to their diverse structures and excellent emission properties. In this work, we report the synthesis and characterization of four blue-emitting zero-dimensional hybrid metal halides, namely, (2HP)2ZnCl2, (2HP)2ZnBr2, (2TP)2ZnCl2, and (2TP)2ZnBr2 (2HP = 2-hydroxypyridine, 2TP = pyridine-2-thiol). By changing the ligands and halides, a remarkable increase in the photoluminescence quantum yield of (2HP)2ZnCl2 (44.7%) compared to (2TP)2ZnBr2 (1.8%) is realized. The 2HP series features excitation-dependent emission characteristics, whereas the 2TP series does not due to the effect of a different organic ligand. Utilizing time-resolved and temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopies, all four compounds exhibit both thermally activated delayed fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence properties. These materials have excellent ambient and thermal stabilities and are solution-processable. Our work shows the importance of carefully incorporating organic ligands with the appropriate inorganic metal center to achieve tunable emission properties.

Transient opto-thermal simulation analysis and experimental validation of LERP systems

Abstract Solid-state technology has revolutionized the lighting industry. However, efficiency-droop-limited LEDs introduce constraints to the luminances achieved, and as a result, laser diodes (LDs) are replacing them in the remote phosphor setup. This introduces a new family of lighting solutions, laser-excited remote phosphor (LERP) systems, which can outperform cutting-edge LEDs. LERP systems however have not yet reached their full potential as the high intensity laser beam induces high temperatures within the phosphor material whose emission characteristics heavily depend on temperature. For this reason, a simulation framework has been developed that combines optical and thermal analysis in order to study and optimize these systems and derive their temperature thresholds for sustainable long-term usage. The focus here is on transient analysis, where the interplay between optical and thermal effects can be accounted for and the time dynamics of the system can be investigated. This enables the study of operation points near or at the thermal quenching regime. Furthermore, advanced material models have been developed in order to incorporate the temperature-dependence. The experimental validation of the model has shown that experimental and simulated results are in good agreement.

An investigation of the electrochemical characteristics of NiO-Co3O4/graphite/PVDF composites for the development of a supercapacitor with ultrahigh stability

Abstract Supercapacitors are a groundbreaking electrical energy storage technology that falls between batteries and dielectric capacitors which has undergone significant progress in recent years. Among the several elements influencing a supercapacitor’s capacitance, the choice of electrode materials plays a crucial role. Nanomaterials formed from transition metal oxides (TMOs) with incorporated 3D graphite are said to possess high capacitance, conductivity, increased active site area, distinct redox properties and several valence shells, making them an appropriate material for electrode synthesis. Therefore, in this study, three composites of NiO and Co3O4 are prepared in the ratio of 2:8, 3:7 and 4:6 using facile sol–gel method. To the prepared composites, graphite and PVDF are added in equal quantities. The resultant samples are characterized using XRD, SEM, FTIR and UV–vis spectroscopy. The samples are further integrated on an FTO electrode and subjected to CV, GCD and EIS for electrochemical study. The highest specific capacitance is obtained for NiO and Co3O4 composite in the ratio 3:7 and is equal to 156.66 F g−1 at a sweep rate of 10 mV s−1. This material is further subjected to a two-electrode study to check its feasibility to develop a symmetric solid-state device. It demonstrated a specific capacitance of 36 F g−1 with 100% capacitive retention.

Investigation of an improved ceramic-based pulse-forming line based on impedance matching electrode.

A ceramic-based pulse-forming line (PFL) is a solid-state device with a wide range of applications in compact pulsed power systems. In this paper, the characteristic impedance of a ceramic-based PFL is theoretically analyzed, and an improved PFL based on an impedance matching electrode is proposed. The improved PFL effectively increases the flat-top ratio and reduces the rise and fall times, enhancing its potential applicability. Experiments using the improved PFL show that, under a charging voltage of 33kV and with an impedance matching load, the output pulse width can reach 86ns with a matching impedance of 3.9Ω. The improved PFL output waveform has a flat-top ratio that reaches 72%, compared with 49.5% in a typical PFL, and exhibits shorter rise and fall times.

Mott resistive switching initiated by topological defects

Avalanche resistive switching is the fundamental process that triggers the sudden change of the electrical properties in solid-state devices under the action of intense electric fields. Despite its relevance for information processing, ultrafast electronics, neuromorphic devices, resistive memories and brain-inspired computation, the nature of the local stochastic fluctuations that drive the formation of metallic regions within the insulating state has remained hidden. Here, using operando X-ray nano-imaging, we have captured the origin of resistive switching in a V2O3-based device under working conditions. V2O3 is a paradigmatic Mott material, which undergoes a first-order metal-to-insulator phase transition together with a lattice transformation that breaks the threefold rotational symmetry of the rhombohedral metallic phase. We reveal a new class of volatile electronic switching triggered by nanoscale topological defects appearing in the shear-strain based order parameter that describes the insulating phase. Our results pave the way to the use of strain engineering approaches to manipulate such topological defects and achieve the full dynamical control of the electronic Mott switching. Topology-driven, reversible electronic transitions are relevant across a broad range of quantum materials, comprising transition metal oxides, chalcogenides and kagome metals.

Wire-based friction stir additive manufacturing towards isotropic high-strength-ductility Al-Mg alloys

ABSTRACT The formation of eutectic Al-Mg2Al3 phases along the grain boundaries makes it difficult to improve the mechanical properties of high-magnesium-content aluminum alloys. Here, wire-based friction stir additive manufacturing(W-FSAM) was proposed as a novel solid-state additive manufacturing technology. The shearing, transport, and thermo-plasticisation processes of the deposited materials were achieved by a rotational tool and a stationary barrel. The original Mg2Al3 phases were refined and dissolved into the matrix and formed supersaturated solid solution structures. The refined grains with a diameter of 1.27 ± 0.64 μm were achieved through the dynamic recrystallization process. The components achieved isotropic mechanical properties due to the homogeneous equiaxed fine-grain structure. The ultimate tensile strength reached 415 ± 11 MPa with an elongation of 31.0 ± 2.0%, superior to the commercial 5xxx products. The enhanced strain hardening capacity was achieved by the suppressed emission of dislocations from grain boundaries and the interaction between the supersaturated solid solute atoms and mobile dislocation.

Phonon polariton-mediated heat conduction: Perspectives from recent progress

AbstractIt has been well-accepted that heat conduction in solids is mainly mediated by electrons and phonons. Recently, there has been a strong emerging interest in the contribution of various polaritons, quasi-particles resulting from the coupling between electromagnetic waves and different excitations in solids, to heat conduction. Traditionally, the polaritonic effect on conduction has been largely neglected because of the low number density of polaritons. However, it has been recently predicted and experimentally confirmed that polaritons could play significant roles in heat conduction in polar nanostructures. Since the transport characteristics of polaritons are very different from those of electrons and phonons, polariton-mediated heat conduction provides new opportunities for manipulating heat flow in solid-state devices for more efficient heat dissipation or energy conversion. In view of the rapid growth of polariton-mediated heat conduction, especially by phonon polaritons, here we review the recent progress in this field and provide perspectives for challenges and opportunities. Narrowband Electroluminescence from Color Centers in Hexagonal Boron Nitride.

Defects in wide bandgap materials have emerged as promising candidates for solid-state quantum optical technologies. Electrical excitation of single emitters may lead to scalable on-chip devices and therefore is highly sought after. However, most wide bandgap materials are not amenable to efficient doping, posing challenges for electrical excitation and on-chip integration. Here, we demonstrate narrowband electroluminescence from visible and near-infrared color centers in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We harness van der Waals tunnel junctions of graphene-hBN-graphene. Charge carriers are electrically injected into hBN, exciting localized defects that emit nonclassical light, as characterized by the second order correlation measurement. Remarkably, the devices operate at room temperature and produce robust, narrowband emission spanning from visible to the near-infrared. Our work marks an important milestone in vdW materials and their promising attributes for integrated quantum technologies and on-chip photonic circuits.

FPGA Realization of a Fractional-Order Model of Universal Memory Elements

This paper addresses critical gaps in the digital implementations of fractional-order memelement emulators, particularly given the challenges associated with the development of solid-state devices using nanomaterials. Despite the potentials of these devices for industrial applications, the digital implementation of fractional-order models has received limited attention. This research contributes to bridging this knowledge gap by presenting the FPGA realization of the memelements based on a universal voltage-controlled circuit topology. The digital emulators successfully exhibit the pinched hysteresis behaviors of memristors, memcapacitors, and meminductors, showing the retention of historical states of their constitutive electronic variables. Additionally, we analyze the impact of the fractional-order parameters and excitation frequencies on the behaviors of the memelements. The design methodology involves using Xilinx System Generator for DSP blocks to lay out the architectures of the emulators, with synthesis and gate-level implementation performed on the Xilinx Artix-7 AC701 Evaluation kit, where resource utilization on hardware accounts for about 1% of available hardware resources. Further hardware analysis shows successful timing validation and low power consumption across all designs, with an average on-chip power of 0.23 Watts and average worst negative slack of 0.6 ns against a 5 ns constraint. We validate these results with Matlab 2020b simulations, which aligns with the hardware models.

Re-examination of the intumescence mechanism of fire retarded PP with APP/pentaerythritol/zeolite-4A using advanced spectroscopic techniques

The mixture of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER) is a very efficient flame retardant (FR) intumescent system suitable for polyolefins such as polypropylene (PP). The mechanisms of intumescence of this FR system in this polymer was investigated using different spectroscopic techniques including continuous wave (CW) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique. In this work, the intumescence mechanism of PP/APP/PER formulations with and without 4A is revisited. The intumescent system was in-depth investigated using NMR, CW EPR and pulsed EPR. The CW EPR technique confirmed that free radicals are mainly generated during the intumescence of the system between 250 and 350 °C. Thanks to the pulsed EPR and solid state NMR, it was evidenced that a key structural shift from a predominantly carbonaceous residue to a predominantly phosphorated residue. Besides, it was also evidenced that zeolite 4A totally collapses during extrusion of PP/APP/PER formulations reacting with APP to generate aluminophosphates. Then, silicophosphates are generated between 350 and 400 °C. Both alumino- and silicophosphates contribute to protect aromatic structures in the residue at high temperatures.

Nonlinear dielectric response and conductivity characteristics of epoxy resin in high voltage AC electric field

Abstract High-voltage dielectric and AC conduction behaviors of epoxy resin (EP) insulation are beneficial for the design and application of solid-state power electronic devices. This study investigates the nonlinear dielectric response and AC conduction characteristics of EP. The dielectric relaxation characteristics, including permittivity and AC conductivity of the EP samples, were investigated using high-voltage dielectric spectroscopy and the ionic polarization model. The results demonstrate a nonlinear increase in the relative permittivity and AC conductivity concerning the AC electric field. The increase in AC conduction under a high-frequency electric field is attributed to the reduction in the threshold field for charge injection caused by elevated temperatures. Considering the dielectric response and carrier hopping, it is evident that the nonlinear dielectric response of EP primarily originates from the ionic process under high electric fields. Ionic polarization, in conjunction with ion-hopping conduction, enhances the dielectric loss at high frequencies and electric fields, thereby facilitating the nonlinear conversion of AC conduction. The equivalent free volume is likely to increase in high-frequency fields. This phenomenon leads to an increase in AC conduction and even dielectric breakdown. This study offers a pivotal theoretical framework for the design and application of high-frequency insulation.

Towards Strength–Ductility Synergy in Cold Spray for Manufacturing and Repair Application: A Review

Cold spray is a solid-state additive manufacturing technology and has significant potential in component fabrication and structural repair. However, the unfavourable strength–ductility synergy in cold spray due to the high work hardening, porosity and insufficient bonding strength makes it an obstacle for real application. In recent years, several methods have been proposed to improve the quality of the cold-sprayed deposits, and to achieve a balance between strength and ductility. According to the mechanism of how these methods work to enhance metallurgical bonding, decrease porosity and reduce dislocation densities, they can be divided into four groups: (i) thermal methods, (ii) mechanical methods, (iii) thermal–mechanical methods and (iv) optimisation of microstructure morphology. A comprehensive review of the strengthening mechanism, microstructure and mechanical properties of cold-sprayed deposits by these methods is conducted. The challenges towards strength–ductility synergy of cold-sprayed deposits are summarised. The possible research directions based on authors’ research experience are also proposed. This review article aims to help researchers and engineers understand the strengths and weaknesses of existing methods and provide pointers to develop new technologies that are easily adopted to improve the strength–ductility synergy of cold-sprayed deposits for real application.

Fluctuation Phenomena in Single Injection Solid State Spherical Devices under Amorphous Regime

Fluctuation effects in single injection solid-state sphere devices working in the amorphous regime are an interesting area of study that has effects on the stability and performance of electronic devices. This study looks into how changes in these devices' working features affect them, focused on how they act when they are in a fluid state. Solid-state sphere devices have unique electrical and structure properties. These properties are more noticeable in amorphous materials, where the disorder of the atoms affects how charges move and how reliable the device is. We look at the fluctuation effects that happen during single injection processes, in which carriers are brought into the device from a single source. It is called an amorphous phase because there is no long-range order. The inserted charge carriers and the disordered atomic lattice respond in a complicated way. The device's efficiency measures, like charge build up, current-voltage traits, and noise levels, change a lot because of this interaction. In order to describe these changes, our research uses both practical and theoretical methods. We use advanced measurement methods to find out about electrical reactions and noise bands, and we're also making theoretical models to figure out how the things we see happen. The results show that changes are affected by things like carrier trapping, limited states, and dynamic disorder in the amorphous material. The results of this study help us learn more about how stable and reliable single-injection solid-state sphere devices are in amorphous environments. These results could help improve the performance of amorphous materials used in many electronic and optical systems by making device designs more efficient.
