Test of the reward/circadian rhythm dysregulation model of risk for bipolar spectrum disorders at a micro time scale using multilevel moderated mediation.

  • Journal of psychopathology and clinical science
  • Logan T Smith + 5 more

Two theories, the social zeitgeber theory and the reward theory, have been proposed to explain the onset of bipolar spectrum disorders (BSDs), highlighting the roles of disrupted sleep-wake rhythms and hypersensitivity to reward in BSDs. This study tested a component of the integrated reward/circadian rhythm dysregulation model of BSDs by examining how reward-relevant life events predict affective symptoms via social rhythm disruption (SRD) in young adults (N = 145) with high- or moderate-reward sensitivity across 20-days of ecological momentary assessment. Significant interaction effects were observed such that high-reward individuals experienced more reward-relevant life events and associated SRD. Moderated mediation analysis supported the integrated model at the daily level for depressive symptoms. For hypomanic symptoms, there was not a significant indirect effect nor moderation by reward group. Findings suggest hypersensitivity to reward amplifies the effects of reward-relevant life events on SRD, contributing to the onset of depressive symptoms in individuals at-risk for BSD. Results highlight potential early intervention targets. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved).

Advancing Environmental Stewardship Through the DENR Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) Program: Assessment of Implementation in Surigao City

  • Advancing Environmental Stewardship Through the DENR Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) Program: Assessment of Implementation in Surigao City
  • Joy Rolin Añonuevo

This study assessed the implementation of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) Program in Surigao City and examined its contribution to environmental stewardship among stakeholders. Anchored on Environmental Behavior Theory and Social Learning Theory, the study employed a descriptive-evaluative design using survey data and documentary analysis. The respondents were 100 purposively selected stakeholders from Barangay San Juan, Barangay Sabang, Barangay Washington, and DENR CEPA implementers. Primary data were collected through a researcher-developed, expert-validated questionnaire measuring the implementation of CEPA in terms of communication, education, and public awareness. Secondary data were obtained from DENR reports, accomplishment records, attendance sheets, solid waste management monitoring reports, plastic reduction memorandum, and activity documentation. Results showed that 23 CEPA-related activities were implemented in 2025, consisting of communication activities (f = 10), education initiatives (f = 8), and public awareness activities (f = 5). Communication was highly implemented (M = 3.47), education was moderately implemented (M = 3.32), and public awareness was highly implemented (M = 3.41). Documentary evidence showed that environmental stewardship was observable in proper waste segregation, coastal clean-ups, tree planting, mangrove planting, and community participation, although plastic reduction, sustained participation, and compliance remained inconsistent. The most pressing challenge was limited financial resources (M = 2.96), followed by lack of environmental awareness (M = 2.93), limited environmental training (M = 2.91), low community participation (M = 2.87), and poor stakeholder coordination (M = 2.83). The study concludes that the CEPA Program is visible and active in Surigao City, but its long-term effectiveness depends on stronger environmental education, sustained engagement, better resource support, improved coordination, and monitoring mechanisms. The study recommends enhanced CEPA policy guidelines to strengthen communication, environmental education, public participation, institutional coordination, resource mobilization, and evaluation. Social Identity and Wellbeing of Australian Vegan Men: A Qualitative Interview Study.

  • Megan F Lee + 7 more

With the global rise of veganism, shifting dietary habits are reshaping the social roles and identities of Australian vegan men. Despite a predominance of research in female experiences of veganism, this topic remains underexplored for men. Using the social identity theory framework, this phenomenological, semi-structured interview study explores how 27 Australian vegan men perceive and navigate their social identities within their social relationships. Using reflexive thematic analysis, we found four main themes. The first two illustrating out-group interactions: (i) masculinity and moral identity and (ii) navigating vegan identity: community and cultural integration and the final two illustrating within-group interactions, (iii) Negotiating dietary boundaries: whole-food and flexible veganism and (iv) close connections: strengthening personal bonds. Australian vegan men navigated their social identities through out-group dynamics involving masculinity, ethical commitments and community integration, and in-group dynamics marked by dietary boundary negotiation and solidarity with vegan communities. However, they also faced social isolation and strained relationships. SO WHAT?: Their experiences reflected identity negotiation processes shaped by moral values, subgroup tensions and the importance of supportive social relationships in sustaining vegan practices. We recommend awareness of vegan male experiences of stigma, false perceptions and struggles with masculine ideals versus masculine values.

Social Motivation in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Mixed-Methods Exploration Using Eye-Tracking, Behavioral Tasks, Self- and Parent-Reports, and Qualitative Insights.

  • Autism : the international journal of research and practice

Social motivation diminishment is a core autism feature, yet prior research has been inconsistent, focusing on single dimensions and overlooking heterogeneity in motivational expressions among autistic individuals. This mixed-methods study compared social motivation in 104 individuals with autism (male: 74, Mage = 18.55 years) and 192 non-autistic peers (male: 101, Mage = 16.65 years), using eye-tracking and behavioral tasks, self-/parent-reports, and qualitative analysis of open-ended responses. Quantitative analyses revealed autistic participants had lower self-determined motivation, driven by reduced intrinsic motivation and identified regulation. Parent-report results corroborated lower perceived social motivation in the autistic group. The eye-tracking task showed decreased orientation to social stimuli, and behavioral task indicated reduced willingness to exert effort for social rewards, with no significant associations with age or autistic trait. Qualitative data highlighted that despite challenges, many autistic participants valued friendship and sought connection through shared activities, often preferring compact, stable social networks. The group-level quantitative findings align with social motivation theory but underscore heterogeneity, showing that diminished social motivation in autism may stem from contextual challenges rather than uniform amotivation. This study advances the understanding of social motivation dynamics, emphasizing the need for inclusive assessments that recognize diverse motivational expressions and prioritize subjective experiences.Lay AbstractSocial motivation refers to how much people want to engage with others, notice social cues, and seek connections. Researchers have long debated whether autistic people's social challenges stem from lower social motivation. However, past studies often focused on only one aspect of social motivation and ignored individual differences among autistic people. We recruited 104 autistic and 192 non-autistic adolescents and young adults. Participants and their caregivers completed questionnaires about social motivation from their own and caregivers' perspectives. We used two behavioral tasks to measure how much attention participants devoted to social content, and how willing they were to exert effort for social rewards. Open-ended questions captured autistic participants' perspectives on friendship dynamics, social inclusion, and the meaning of social connection. We found that autistic participants reported lower social motivation, a finding supported by parent reports. They spent less time looking at social content and exerted less effort to obtain social rewards than non-autistic peers. However, their open-ended responses showed that they sought social connection through shared activities, preferred small and stable social networks, and found joy and belonging in close friendships, despite challenges such as the strain of social interaction. Our results can help professionals avoid misinterpreting autistic people's social behaviors, and help families and peers recognize autistic individuals' expressions of social interest, reducing unfair judgments and promoting more respectful interactions. In addition, these findings support the development of assessments and social programs that reflect autistic perspectives.

What It Takes in Contexts of Chronic Traumas: Designing Place-Based Programs for Social Capital, Community Resilience, and Economic Mobility.
  • Jul 1, 2026
  • Journal of community psychology
  • Mia Ersoff + 3 more

This study investigates how a 12-month economic mobility intervention, Mothers Mobility Program (MMP), in Charlotte, NC, fosters usable social capital among single mothers facing systemic, financial, and personal stressors often associated with complex trauma. Using Braun and Clarke's (2006) Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA), our interdisciplinary team conducted and analyzed interviews with a subgroup of 20 program mothers (ages 19-44) from six cohorts (N = 70) who completed MMP between 2021 and 2024. The analysis revealed the formation of bonding and bridging social capital among participants. These processes were sequenced and interdependent: bonding ties, fostered through program offerings and identity-affirming spaces, first created trust and safety, which then enabled bridging connections to external resources. Shared staff-client identities influenced engagement, but structural barriers limited the usability of newly formed networks. This study enhances social capital theory by detailing how single mothers experiencing chronic trauma develop, access, and utilize social resources within program settings, along with the program components that support these processes. When place-based programs intentionally sequence bonding before bridging, provide identity-affirming supports, and align external resources with community strengths, these processes become mutually reinforcing. Shared staff identity fosters trust and accelerates engagement, but structural barriers shape whether new connections translate into tangible benefits. Without this integrated strategy and attention to sequencing, efforts to build sustainable social capital and promote community resilience may be less effective in contexts of persistent inequities.
