ABSTRACT The most pressing security threat faced by rural residents in northwest Nigeria is banditry, given its disruptive impact. This study examines the changing role of women in the criminal activities through empirical research. The paper asks pertinent research questions. What are the dynamics of women’s involvement in the trafficking of arms in the context of banditry in northwest Nigeria? Poverty and strong social relations with bandits are the primary reasons motivating women to engage in arms trafficking. The presence of transnational armed groups significantly contributes to the proliferation of arms, with porous borders serving as a key facilitator. Women encounter fewer obstacles in arms trafficking due to factors such as religious beliefs and physical appearance that prevent thorough security checks. Effectively addressing the gender-specific challenges of arms trafficking and violence requires a comprehensive strategy that involves cooperation among security forces, civil society, and the local population.
