Market Citizenship: Fostering the Green Transition Through European Private Law
  • Dec 1, 2025
  • European Review of Contract Law
  • Francesca Bertelli + 2 more

Abstract The common values implied in the principle of sustainable development are reshaping the economic model of a ‘competitive social market economy’ in the EU internal market, as well as the overall approach to EU law. In this context, both consumers and corporations represent a political force of a complex system made of interdependencies, where individual economic interests no longer have primacy, but at the same time the possibility to choose the less sustainable option is still an integral means of economic freedom. The idea underpinning the proposal lies on the rebalancing power of transparency in capital market. Indeed, the flow of (sustainability) information in the right direction is functional to empower stakeholders and to promote their active engagement in corporate decisions in a way that, by the means of a democratization of corporate governance, would make the whole market system more democratic.

The public policies of the provincial government towards family farming
  • Nov 27, 2025
  • Agrociencia Uruguay
  • Paula Roses

In the province of Entre Ríos, the initiatives to promote Social and Solidarity Economy (ESyS) began to emerge in 2012, following the creation of the Secretariat of Social Economy (SES) and the enactment of Law 10,151, which created the Promotion and Development Regime for the Social Economy. We propose to analyze the actions carried out by the SES during the 2019-2023 period, broadening its perspective on the recipients of public policies in an environment marked by the COVID-19 crisis. Gradually, actions related to food production, the promotion of associations, and family farming were promoted, and the Food Sovereignty Area was established. To conduct our research, we used a predominantly qualitative methodology, conducting semi-structured interviews with a public official, a territorial state agent, and two family farming experiences. In addition, secondary sources of information will be used to complement and contrast the information obtained by the interviewees and understand how the SES works.

Sociological Motives of Helping Behavior
  • Nov 27, 2025
  • Turkish Journal of Business Ethics
  • Onur Dündar + 3 more

This study investigates the motivations of volunteers in non-governmental organizations to help children with education and the unconscious sources of these motivations through a phenomenological approach. The study considers helping behavior as a phenomenon in two different categories: pure philanthropic activity for intrinsic satisfaction and contribution to the rational organization where social benefits and individual interests are identified. The Weberian tradition of institutional sociology emphasizes spiritual motivations as the legitimizing background of capitalism as the fundamental dynamics of the rationalization processes in a social economy. Social network theorists place great importance on the concept of solidarity as a moral motivation in the formation of industrial capitalism, an approach that strengthens the theoretical foundations of this study. In this context, structured interviews have been conducted with eight participants volunteering in civil society organizations in the Bandırma district of Balıkesir. The data were analyzed by categorical-systematic content analysis through MAXQDA 2020 software. Findings from the analysis indicate that a strong inclination toward pure philanthropic activity primarily characterizes participants’ motivations for helping. This result reveals that although the participants thought that they rationalized their helping motivation following the activities, spiritual qualities were consistently preserved.

Agroecological short supply chains
  • Nov 27, 2025
  • Agrociencia Uruguay
  • Emiliano Guedes + 2 more

Agroecology, historically driven by social movements as a resistance strategy, has recently been incorporated into public policy agendas. The National Agroecology Plan (PNA) prioritizes family farming and establishes among its strategic axes the access, distribution, and consumption of agroecological food. This study aims to characterize the short supply chains for agroecological products, focusing on associative and short-circuit strategies, as well as analyzing the constraints of public policies. To achieve this, secondary information sources, interviews with qualified informants, and the implementation of an online form for characterizing short sales circuits were applied. A total of 126 sales spaces were identified, of which 91 belong to short supply chains and are predominantly located in the metropolitan area. The main short supply chains are fairs, baskets, direct on-farms sales, and local stores or stalls. Most strategies are linked to farmer and/or consumer organizations, with the Uruguay Agroecology Network playing a central role. Among the identified limitations are logistical aspects, scale issues, and a lack of state support. The limited budget allocated for the implementation of the PNA and the regulatory changes that affected certification through the Participatory Guarantee System of the RAU reflect problems and contradictions in recent public policies. Despite these limitations, the initiatives aim to redefine market relations by strengthening the production-consumption link through approaches rooted in social and solidarity economy.

INTEGRASI NILAI-NILAI HADIS WAKAF PRODUKTIF DALAM PENGUATAN MODEL BISNIS SOSIAL ISLAMI
  • Nov 27, 2025
  • J-Alif : Jurnal Penelitian Hukum Ekonomi Syariah dan Budaya Islam
  • Farida Aprianti + 3 more

This study examines the principles of productive waqf from the perspective of the Prophet's hadith and analyzes its integration into strengthening the Islamic social business model. Using a thematic (maudhū‘ī) hadith approach, it explores the concept of ḥabs al-aṣl wa tasaddaq bi al-ṯamarah as the foundation of productive waqf. The findings reveal eight value indicators within the hadiths that form the basis for developing an Islamic social economy: retention of principal assets, sustainability and distribution of benefits, sharia compliance, trustworthiness and professionalism of the naẓir, social welfare orientation, freedom from haram elements, and sincerity of intention. These values, when integrated into Islamic social business practices, form three main pillars: financial independence, measurable social benefits, and trust-based governance that drives systemic change. This integration results in an economic management model based on maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah, balancing worship objectives with economic sustainability. Consequently, from a hadith perspective, productive waqf functions not merely as a religious philanthropic instrument, but as a paradigm for socio-economic transformation capable of building community independence and equitable wealth distribution.

  • Dawei Jiang

With the rapid development of social economy and the increasing diversification and personalization of people's needs, building a service-oriented government has become a key strategic direction for China to deepen administrative system reform and promote the modernization of the national governance system and governance capacity. The core of a service-oriented government is to be guided by public needs, strengthen public service functions, and improve the transparency, fairness and efficiency of government services. As an important cornerstone for promoting the construction of a service-oriented government, the construction of public management standardization capabilities is not only related to the standardization of government service processes, the optimization of resource allocation, and the improvement of service quality, but also an important way to enhance the public's satisfaction, trust and participation in government services. This article deeply analyzes the connotation, current situation, problems and improvement strategies of public management standardization capabilities under the framework of a service-oriented government, aiming to provide theoretical support and practical guidance for the construction of a service-oriented government.

Employment quality and mental health in China under the policy of expanding jobs and benefiting people’s livelihood: gender differences between low-quality employment and work-family values
  • Nov 25, 2025
  • Frontiers in Public Health
  • Wenqi Zhao

Background With the rapid development of China’s social economy, the state has introduced a number of social security and employment policies, which are centered on the principles of stabilizing employment, ensuring people’s livelihood, and supporting key groups. Empirical research often employs cross-sectional data to examine the impact of low-quality employment on the mental health of workers, but the evidence regarding the correlation between employment quality and mental health remains insufficient. Methods This study aims to analyze the potential long-term impact of low-quality employment on mental health. By applying the employment arrangement typology method, we utilized the survey data from the China Family Longitudinal Survey (CFPS) from 2016 to 2018 to explore the association between employment quality and mental health, and further investigated whether the strength of work-family values (i.e., the emphasis on career success and child-rearing) and gender differences led to differences in this association pattern. Conclusion Through potential category clustering analysis of representative Chinese panel data, we identified six types of employment quality: standard employment, unstable and unsustainable employment, full-time but unstable employment, mild standard employment, mixed employment, and protected parttime employment. After controlling for sociodemographic characteristics, the research results show that compared with the standard employment pattern, men engaged in unstable and unsustainable jobs, as well as women in full-time unstable jobs, have significantly lower mental health levels two years later. Although protected part-time jobs have a more negative impact on the mental health of people with middle and high working family values, the interaction analysis shows that the moderating role of values in the relationship between employment quality and mental health does not present a clear pattern among different gender groups. Discussion It is suggested that future research should replicate these findings in different countries to verify the correlation.

Corrosion behavior study and failure time analysis of X65 pipeline steel in near-neutral soil.
  • Nov 23, 2025
  • Scientific reports
  • Yu Wang + 3 more

Corrosion is an important cause of oil and gas pipeline failure, and with the continuous development of social economy and the rising demand for energy, the problem of corrosion of oil and gas transportation pipelines is becoming more and more obvious. The finite element model of axial section of X65 pipeline steel is established by electrochemical parameters obtained from experiments in near-neutral soil simulation solution, and the corrosion defects produced by the effect of uneven microstructure distribution are analyzed. Based on this, the behavior and failure time of X65 pipeline steel corrosion under pressure and electrochemical coupling are further investigated. The results show that there is a significant effect on the corrosion of X65 pipeline steel between different defects. In addition, the corrosion at the defects of X65 pipeline steel under double defects will be weakened compared with single defects, and the corrosion at the defects of X65 pipeline steel under triple defects is the most serious. This study mainly analyzes the effect of single and multiple defects on the corrosion behavior of X65 pipeline steel, which provides a reference for the corrosion protection and pipeline safety of X65 pipeline steel under near-neutral soil.

Reclaiming capacity from the margins: adjusted sovereignty and strategic agency in postcolonial Martinique
  • Nov 21, 2025
  • Third World Quarterly
  • Christophe Providence

This article examines how non-sovereign, postcolonial territories can reclaim the agency through locally situated practices of governance. Using Martinique as an emblematic case, the study develops the concept of adjusted territorial sovereignty to describe how civic and hybrid actors engage in strategic action within the constraints of centralised legal frameworks and geopolitical dependencies. Drawing on two in-depth case studies – a digital innovation hub (MADIHUB) and an agroecological cooperative (Agri’Cité) – the article demonstrates how sovereignty can be redefined as a performative, relational and capacitary practice enacted from below. It contributes to contemporary debates on territorial politics, postcolonial governance, and non-sovereign statehood, offering a comparative heuristic for analysing strategic agencies in dependent regions. By reframing sovereignty as a relational and performative process, the article challenges binary views of dependence versus independence and situates non-sovereign territories as laboratories of political innovation. The findings contribute to debates on postcolonial governance, social economy, and subnational diplomacy, while offering insights into the strategic and symbolic conditions under which territorial agency can emerge. Beyond the specific case of Martinique, the concept of adjusted sovereignty provides a comparative heuristic for analysing how dependent regions transform constraints into opportunities for differentiated autonomy in the twenty-first century.

A gender approach on the contribution of the social and solidarity economy to regional employment: The case of the Basque autonomous community
  • Nov 14, 2025
  • Annals of Public and Cooperative Economics
  • Artitzar Erauskin‐Tolosa + 4 more

Abstract Academic research on economic issues from a gender approach remains limited, and similarly, few studies and academic papers have addressed the issue of the social and solidarity economy (SSE) from this perspective. The main objective of this paper is to contribute to the academic gap by completing an academic review on the subject and by presenting a panel data analysis of the contribution of the SSE to the evolution of the employment rate in terms of gender in the counties of the Basque Autonomous Community (BAC). Using panel data analysis, this study examines the contribution of the SSE to employment rates by gender across Basque counties. Although a stronger presence of the SSE as a whole positively influences the employment rate of both men and women, a sector‐specific analysis reveals that only the manufacturing sector exhibits a positive relationship with male employment rates. Therefore, further research on the SSE sector from a gender perspective is needed—both to determine whether the observed differences between men and women persist in this field and to explore the underlying reasons. This is particularly relevant in a context where the principles of equality and equity should be inherent to the very nature of the SSE organizations.

Honor and Slavery in Oroonoko (1688) and Imoinda (2003)
  • Nov 13, 2025
  • Comparative Literature Studies
  • Xavier Lee

ABSTRACT This article examines the interaction between honor and slavery in Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko: The Royal Slave (1688) and its operatic adaptation by Joan Anim-Addo, titled Imoinda, or, She Who Will Lose Her Name (2003). This article pays special attention to the narrative function of honor in both texts and proposes that a careful consideration of the dynamics of honor might deepen our knowledge of slavery as a social institution. In Oroonoko, honor animates a complex social and political economy, functioning both as the capital of distinction and the basis for civil society. The collision of Oroonoko’s royal-born honor with his novel slave status in Surinam forms the novella’s tragic plot structure. In Imoinda, honor works to dispossess the titular character of her selfhood. Honor forces Anim-Addo’s Imoinda to make a decision: should she maintain her honor through death, or should she forsake the past to give birth to the Creole nation?

  • Qijiong Zhang

With the rapid development of the social economy and the advancement of the informatization process, social integrity issues have become increasingly prominent, becoming one of the key challenges in building a harmonious society. Social integrity is not only a moral requirement but also the cornerstone of economic and social activities. From the perspective of moral philosophy, this paper explores the path of constructing a social integrity system. Firstly, it analyzes the connotation and role of social integrity. Secondly, from the perspective of moral philosophy, it discusses how ethics and morality, social responsibility, and legal systems can mutually promote and jointly promote the construction of the integrity system. Finally, combined with the actual situation, it puts forward specific strategies for improving the integrity system, including strengthening integrity education, improving the social supervision mechanism, and establishing a credit punishment mechanism. Through the analysis of this paper, it aims to provide theoretical support and practical guidance for the construction of social integrity.

The Effect of Geography on Banditry Movements in 19th Century Smyrna and Its Hinterland
  • Nov 3, 2025
  • Journal of Balkan and Near Eastern Studies
  • İbrahim Hamaloğlu + 1 more

ABSTRACT This study explores how geographical factors influenced the emergence and persistence of banditry in nineteenth-century Smyrna (İzmir) and its hinterland. Drawing on Eric Hobsbawm’s concept of social banditry and Karen Barkey’s framework of state centralization, it argues that geography acted as an active force shaping social order, economy, and resistance rather than a passive setting. Using archival records, memoirs, and periodicals, the research shows that the rugged terrain of the Bozdağ and Aydın Mountains, combined with fertile plains below, produced a dual environment: mountains provided refuge and strategic advantage for bandits, while prosperous lowlands offered economic incentives for raids. These physical and climatic conditions fostered enduring networks of yataklık (local support), allowing banditry to survive despite repeated suppression. The study also reassesses the Ottoman state’s pragmatic engagement with outlaws—through negotiation, amnesty, and co-optation—as a sign of adaptability rather than weakness. Integrating Braudel’s longue durée perspective, it situates banditry within the enduring interaction between environment, economy, and authority, highlighting the decisive role of landscape in shaping both rebellion and control in Western Anatolia.

Spatial–temporal variations of NO 2 pollution in Shandong Province based on Sentinel-5P satellite data and influencing factors
  • Nov 3, 2025
  • Open Geosciences
  • Siting Zeng + 4 more

Abstract With the rapid development of the social economy, nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), a trace gas that is an air pollutant, has dual impacts on human health and climate change. In this study, the Google Earth Engine platform is used to retrieve the vertical column concentration inverted by the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) sensor onboard the Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite, and the characteristics of the spatial–temporal distribution of the tropospheric NO 2 column concentration in Shandong Province from 2019 to 2023 are analyzed. The results show that there is a high correlation between the NO 2 column concentration retrieved from the TROPOMI and the NO 2 concentration observed at ground-level monitoring points in Shandong Province ( R = 0.8289). The distribution of the NO 2 column concentration in Shandong Province exhibits a progressive structure of “high in the west and low in the east” with significant spatial heterogeneity. In addition, the fluctuation in the NO 2 column concentration in Shandong Province has obvious cyclical and seasonal characteristics, and the change rate is “summerflat in spring and autumn, high in winter and low in summer.” The results of the geographical detectors indicate that temperature has the greatest influence on the NO 2 column concentration in Shandong Province ( q = 0.5). The geographically weighted regression model indicated that the NO 2 column concentration was negatively correlated with the topography, temperature, and precipitation, and the correlation coefficients are −0.010, −0.952, and −0.330, respectively. It is positively correlated with the intensity of human activities, the degree of urbanization of the land, and the population density, and the correlation coefficients are 0.1610, 0.982, and 0.001, respectively.

Estimating multi-source input uncertainties and their propagation for integrated water quantity and quality simulations
  • Nov 2, 2025
  • Hydrological Sciences Journal
  • Bing Han + 4 more

ABSTRACT Uncertainty estimation in integrated dynamic models, especially for water quality simulations, is challenging due to its complexity and limited observations. This study employs variance decomposition analysis (VDA) to estimate multi-source input uncertainties (precipitation, temperature, point source pollution, and social economy) and their propagation for integrated water quantity and quality simulations in the HEQM model. The Zhugan River watershed, a typical agricultural area in southern Huai River, China, was chosen for the case study. Results showed that precipitation is the main source of uncertainty for both runoff and TN load simulations, with contributions of 64.1% and 61.3%, respectively. Temperature is the main direct uncertainty source for TN load simulation (80.3%), along with contributions from point source pollution (15.1%) and social economy (4.6%). Furthermore, 70.7% of TN load simulation uncertainty propagates from upstream runoff simulation. Estimating multi-source input uncertainties and their propagation is essential for improving integrated water system models.

Notwendige Reformen der Sozialversicherung zur solidarischen Absicherung großer Lebensrisiken
  • Nov 1, 2025
  • Wirtschaftsdienst
  • Stefan Fetzer + 1 more

Abstract The German social security system is heading for a tipping point: without reforms, the total contribution rate for pension, health, nursing care and unemployment insurance will rise above 50 % after 2044. Demographics and rising expenditure threaten the intergenerational contract and the financial basis of the social market economy. The article outlines reform paths for all three central branches: in pension insurance, a higher retirement age, the reinstatement of the sustainability factor and the abandonment of the stop line are necessary. For health insurance, digitalisation, competition and modernised co-payments are proposed. Long-term care insurance requires a moratorium on benefits, more personal responsibility and capital cover. Only decisive reforms can stabilise contribution rates and make social insurance sustainable for the future.
