The diet and foraging behaviour of carnivores are closely linked to their role in ecosystems. The African wildcat (Felis lybica) is a highly adaptable small carnivore that is widespread and common but rarely studied. The diet of this solitary felid has been reported to consist mainly of small rodents with the largest recorded prey being the springhare (Pedetes capensis). Here, we present the first photographic evidence of African wildcat predation on a small antelope, the Damara dik-dik (Madoqua damarensis). This observation expands the known prey spectrum of the species and demonstrates its behavioural flexibility in hunting small ungulate prey.

The Russian-Mongolian expedition conducted the survey in the Mongolian and Gobi Altai in 2024. This research was aimed to search for the new Paleolithic sites: exposed on the surface and stratified, of open and cave types. Herein, we provide the results of the work in the Mongolian Altai and the Jargalant ridge in the Western Mongolia. In the Bayan-Ölgii aimag, we surveyed the floodplain terraces in the Tsengel somon area. Previously, assemblages of the Paleolithic artifacts were collected here. Results indicate that the Khovd River valley was occasionally visited by prehistoric people in the Middle and Upper Paleolithic. The Tsagaan Denj (10 locations) and Khukh-Tolgoi sites represent the industries made of sedimentary pebbles from local alluvium. The Mankhan-4 site discovered by A.P. Okladnikov was examined in the Jargalant ridge. Artifacts found there may point at relatively early age of the Mankhan complex. Another aim of the fieldwork was to collect bone remains of the recent fauna. Modern mammals of Mongolia have not yet been studied fully enough: their habitats are known, but their boundaries are blurred. In this regard, we recorded the locations of both bone remains and living animals. The collection of skeletal remains is necessary to form a comparative collection used for paleontological analysis. In 2024, the collection was replenished with parts of the skeletons of a Siberian ibex, tolai hare, corsac fox, small antelope, badger, and some domesticated animal species. Organic material was collected for the experiments on the degree of preservation of organic remains in the Pleistocene samples.

Abstract Large transboundary protected areas such as the Kavango‐Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA‐TFCA), improve mammal conservation by addressing biodiversity threats on regional and international levels, but an adequate understanding of mammal space use and richness within protected areas is critical for effective management planning. This information has however been missing from the Angolan component of the KAZA‐TFCA, such as areas of Luengue‐Luiana National Park (LLNP), especially compared with neighbouring countries. We used camera trap data from 2021 to 2023 to investigate species richness of medium‐ and large‐sized mammals in two hotspot areas of LLNP, as well as assess the space use patterns of 9 carnivore and 16 herbivore species. A total of 48 species were recorded over 10,781 camera trapping nights, with African elephant (Loxodonta africana) and small antelope (e.g. common duiker Sylvicapra grimmia and steenbok Raphicerus campestris) being the most common. Species composition differed significantly between sites, with 21 species more relatively abundant at Ndunjuru, including cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) and African wild dog (Lycaon pictus), and eight species more relatively abundant at Bico, including lion (Panthera leo) and hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius). The detection probability of 22 species were affected by one or more ecological (e.g. proximity to rivers) or anthropogenic (e.g. human settlement) covariate. These results are intended to act as a baseline to monitor conservation effort and aid habitat management in LLNP, as well as similar protected areas within the KAZA‐TFCA and elsewhere.

A description of a new form of the small antelopes from the Lower Pleistocene of the Taurida cave in the Crimea is given. The new genus and species Tavridia gromovi was identified from a fragment of the skull roof with a horn core and the lower jaw. This small antelope differed from all known forms in the structural features of the horn cores and the dental system. According to the sum of characters, it is assigned to the tribe Antilopini (Eurasia and Africa, Middle Miocene to Recent). The discovery of T. gromovi in the Crimea testifies to the significant diversity of this group of antelopes in the middle of the Early Pleistocene.

This study is the first analysis of mobility in the lumbosacral joint of even-toed ungulates covering the full range of body masses and running forms. In this study, we modified a previously developed osteometry-based method to calculate the available range of motion (aROM) in the lumbosacral joint in artiodactyls. We quantified all three directions of intervertebral mobility: sagittal bending (SB), lateral bending (LB), and axial rotation (AR). This research covers extant artiodactyls from 10 families, 57 genera, and 78 species. The lumbosacral joint in artiodactyls is on average almost twice as mobile in SB as the average intralumbar joint (aROM 15.68° vs 8.22°). In all artiodactyls, the first sacral prezygapophyses are equipped with postfacet fossae determining the available range of lumbosacral hyperextension. SB aROM in the lumbosacral joint in artiodactyls varies almost sevenfold (from 4.53° to 31.19°) and is closely related to the body mass and running form. An allometric equation was developed for the first time, for the joint angular amplitude of motion, exemplified by the artiodactyl lumbosacral SB aROMs, as a power function of body mass, the power coefficient value being close to -0.15. High SB aROM at the lumbosacral joint is characteristic of artiodactyls with at least one of the following characteristics: high cumulative and average SB aROM in the lumbar region (Pearson r = 0.467-0.617), small body mass (r = -0.531), saltatorial or saltatorial-cursorial running form (mean = 16.91-18.63°). The highest SB aROM in the lumbosacral joint is typical for small antelopes and Moschidae (mean=20.24-20.27°). Among these artiodactyls SB aROMs in the lumbosacral joint are on par with various carnivores. Large and robust artiodactyls, adapted predominantly to mediportal and stilt (running on extremely tall limbs) running forms, have 2-3 times smaller SB aROMs in the lumbosacral joint. Adaptation to endurance galloping in open landscapes (cursorial running form) is accompanied by smaller lumbar and lumbosacral SB aROMs compared to that in saltatorial-cursorial artiodactyls of the same body mass. The wide range of species studied makes it possible to significantly expand the knowledge of relations of the mobility of the lumbosacral joint in artiodactyls to body mass and running form.

In this study, we used a previously developed osteometry-based method to calculate available range of motion in presacral intervertebral joints in artiodactyls. We have quantified all three directions of intervertebral mobility: sagittal bending (SB), lateral bending (LB), and axial rotation (AR). This research covers 10 extant families of artiodactyls from 33genera and 39species. The cervical region in artiodactyls is the most mobile region of the presacral vertebral column in SB and LB. Mobility is unevenly distributed throughout the joints of the neck. The posterior neck joints (C4-C7) are significantly more mobile (on average by 2.5-3.5°) to anterior joints (C2-C4) and to the neck-thorax joint (C7-T1) in SB and LB. An increase in the relative length of the cervical region in artiodactyls is accompanied by an increase in the bending amplitudes (SB: Pearson r=0.781; LB: r=0.884). Animals with the most mobile necks (representative of Giraffidae and Camelidae) are 2-3 times more mobile in SB and LB compared to species with the least mobile necks. The thoracic region in artiodactyls, as in other mammals, is characterized by the greatest amplitudes of AR due to the tangential orientation of the zygapophyseal articular facets. The lowest AR values in the thoracic region are typical for the heaviest artiodactyls-Hippopotamidae. The highest AR values are typical for such agile runners as cervids, musk deer, pronghorn, as well as large and small antelopes. SB mobility in the posterior part of the thoracic region can be used by artiodactyls during galloping. The highest values of SB aROM in the posterior part of the thoracic region are typical for small animals with high SB mobility in the lumbar region. The lumbar region in mammals is adapted for efficient SB. Both the cumulative and average SB values in the lumbar region showed correspondence to the running type employed by an artiodactyl. The greatest SB amplitudes in the lumbar region are typical for small animals, which use saltatorial and saltatorial-cursorial running. An increase in body size also corresponds to a decrease in lumbar SB amplitudes. The lowest SB amplitudes are typical for species using the so-called mediportal running. Adaptation to endurance galloping in open landscapes is accompanied by a decrease in lumbar SB amplitudes in artiodactyls. The consistency of the approach used and the wide coverage of the studied species make it possible to significantly expand and generalize the knowledge of the biomechanics of the vertebral column in artiodactyls.

The subtle and cascading effects (e.g., altered interspecific interactions) that anthropogenic stressors have on local ecological assemblages often go unnoticed but are concerning given their importance in ecosystem function. For example, elimination of buffalo from the Serengeti National Park is suggested to have driven increased abundance of smaller antelope as a result of release from competition. The perceived low abundance of small antelope in the contractual Postberg section of the West Coast National Park (the park) has been an ongoing management concern which has been anecdotally attributed to predation by a mesopredator (the caracal, Caracal caracal). However, we hypothesized that the historical overstocking, and consequent overgrazing by larger-bodied managed ungulates would influence small antelope abundance. Using camera traps, we investigated species co-occurrence and temporal activity between small antelope, managed ungulates and caracals in Postberg as well as another part of the park (Langebaan) and a farm outside of the park. Results suggest that small antelope and managed ungulates have a high degree of temporal overlap (Δ = 0.74, 0.79 and 0.86 for the farm, Langebaan and Postberg respectively), while temporal partitioning between small antelope and caracal is apparent (Δ = 0.59). Further, small antelope and managed ungulates appear to occur independently of one another (SIF = 0.91–1 across areas). Managed ungulates were detected almost three times more frequently on fallow lands when compared to the more vegetated sites within the park suggesting that segregated food/cover resources allow for independent occurrence. Small antelope had a much higher probability of occurrence outside of the protected area (e.g., ψ = 0.192 and 0.486 for steenbok at Postberg, Langebaan compared to 0.841 on the farm), likely due to less variable (more intact) habitat outside of the protected area. There is not sufficient evidence to currently warrant management intervention for predators. The small size of the protected area provides limited scope for spatial replication thus reducing possibilities to infer the cause and effect for complex interactions (which would historically have taken place over much larger areas) with negative implications for adaptive management. We recommend continued monitoring over multiple seasons and a wider area to determine the spatial information requirements to inform management of small protected areas.

The oribi (Bovidae: Antilopinae: Ourebiini: Ourebia ourebi [Zimmermann, 1783 ]) is a small antelope distributed widely across open woody grasslands of sub‐Saharan Africa (Goldspink, Holland, Sweet, & Stewart, 2002 ), especially in hilly open‐broadleaf savanna and primarily feeds on herbaceous vegetation (Monfort & Monfort, 1974 ). The species lives singly or in small groups with multiple males, yet long‐term pairing is frequently low (Adamczak & Dunbar, 2008 ; Arcese, 1994 ; Arcese, Jongejan, & Sinclair, 1995 ; Jongejan, Arcese, & Sinclair, 1991 ). Oribi are readily identifiable with a tan coat and whitish underbelly, large ears, a conspicuous black‐coloured preorbital glandular spot below the ear, long neck and long legs (Foley et al., 2014 ; Kingdon et al., 2013 ). Up to 13 subspecies have been described with one subspecies found in Serengeti National Park: O. ourebi cottoni .

Abstract For most Ivorian regions quantitative data on the exploitation of bushmeat by local communities are scarce. We studied hunting patterns around Dassioko Sud Forest Reserve, a remnant coastal forest in south-eastern Côte d'Ivoire, through a 6-month survey of nine restaurants, in three villages surrounding the Reserve. We collected quantitative and qualitative data on the bushmeat brought to restaurants, as well as the final price for which it was sold. We calculated mean prices over the study period and extrapolated to the whole year. A total of 376 mammals (98%) and eight reptiles (2%) were sold in the restaurants surveyed. Rodents and small antelopes represented 74% of the mammals sold, probably reflecting the fact that reproductive strategists persist more successfully in heavily hunted and/or agricultural landscapes, such as the area around the Reserve. Our conservative estimate of the total biomass of bushmeat harvested annually around the Reserve is c. 40,428.03 kg (c. 11,886 animals), with a monetary value of c. FCFA 47,728,516 (c. USD 93,485.75 ), yielding an annual income of c. USD10,387.31 per person, which exceeds the mean annual income of cocoa farmers (FCFA 466,032/USD 932) more than tenfold. Although the sustainability of the bushmeat trade in the surveyed area remains unknown, we showed that hunters predominantly used cable snares, the Reserve was significantly affected by hunting activities (c. 53% of the bushmeat originated there), and larger mammalian species had been extirpated. A lack of effective protection exposes the Reserve to multiple illegal activities, including hunting, a situation exacerbated by the political crisis in 2010.

For many endangered wildlife populations, scientific information necessary for sustainable conservation management is insufficient and difficult to obtain. In such cases, possible alternative sources of information on wildlife populations and their habitats should be sought out, evaluated, and integrated into management decisions and monitoring programs (Nadasdy 1999; Gilchrist et al. 2005). Traditional and local ecological knowledge are increasingly recognized as potential sources of information to complement conventional scientific approaches (e.g., Chemilinsky 1991; Berkes et al. 2000). Human communities, especially those living in and around protected areas, often have intimate and long-standing relationships with those areas (Trakolis 2001; Uddin and Foisal 2007), and their local knowledge is increasingly integrated in conservation biology, ecosystemmanagement, and ecological restoration (Berkes et al. 2000; Kimmerer 2002; Charnley et al. 2008). For example, rangeland pastoralists, through their practical experience and ongoing relationship with their environment, are capable of successfully categorizing landscapes with respect to seasonal changes in grazing capacity (Oba and Kotile 2001). Several studies have highlighted the role of pastoralists’ ecological knowledge as it relates to the utilization of rangelands (e.g. Spooner 1973; Nyerges 1982; Bollig and Schulte 1999; Fernandez-Gimenez 2000; Spencer 2004; Roba and Oba 2009). Moreover, some studies tested whether interviewbased abundance estimates reflect abundances established by using conventional methods (e.g. Gros et al. 1996; Gilchrist et al. 2005; Anadon et al. 2009; Gandiwa 2012). African rangelands are nowadays often characterized by dramatic alterations of landscape structure, with a predominance of few(er) vegetation types as a result of human activities such as livestock (cattle and goat) grazing and subsistence agriculture, which are typically accompanied by pronounced changes in the communities of ungulates (Archer 2010). Nevertheless, two small-bodied ungulate species, the common duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia; 10–14 kg body mass) and the bushbuck (Tragelaphus sylvaticus; 35–80 kg) have been shown to subsist in heavily impacted areas of today’s rural Africa (Schmidt Electronic supplementary material The online version of this article (doi:10.1007/s10745-015-9753-1) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

The Early Stone Age archaeological record does not become persistent and widespread until approximately 2.0-1.7 million years ago, when Oldowan sites spread across Africa and ultimately into Eurasia. However, good records of hominin behavior from this important time interval are uncommon. Here we describe recent findings from the two million year old Oldowan site of Kanjera South, on the Homa Peninsula of southwestern Kenya. Kanjera South is the oldest Oldowan site with large assemblages of stone artifacts and well-preserved archaeological fauna. Our research indicates that hominin activities were situated in an open habitat within a grassland dominated ecosystem, the first documentation of an archaeological site in such an open setting. Hominins selectively collected and transported stone materials (30% of the lithic assemblage) over longer distances (at least 10 km) than is typical for the Oldowan, reflecting their preference for hard, easily-flaked lithologies unavailable on the northern half of the Homa Peninsula. They deployed different technological strategies to more intensively utilize these hard, non-local raw materials. Artifacts were used for a variety of tasks, including butchering small antelopes probably obtained by hunting, working wood, working soft plant material, and processing underground storage organs. These data suggest that the Kanjera hominins utilized a technological system that allowed them to extract nutrient dense animal and plant foods from their environment. This shift towards the acquisition of nutritious, hard-to-acquire foods in packets large enough to be shared may have facilitated brain and body size expansion in the genus Homo.

Aders’ duiker Cephalophus adersi is a critically endangered small antelope endemic to the coastal forests of east Africa. Threatened by habitat loss and hunting, the species was until recently known to persist only on Zanzibar, Tanzania, and in the Arabuko-Sokoke National Reserve, Kenya. However, more recent observations, have confirmed the occurrence of Aders’ duiker in Kenyan coastal forests north of the Tana River. This paper reports systematic camera trapping results for three sites in the Boni–Dodori coastal forest system north of the Tana and the only other known mainland site for Aders’ duiker, the Arabuko-Sokoke forest. From a total survey effort of 5,723 camera trap days, we demonstrated that the known area of occurrence for Aders’ duiker has more than doubled with occupancy values at or close to 100 % for all three northern sites. An index of relative abundance for Aders’ duiker was also one to two orders of magnitude greater at these sites compared to Arabuko-Sokoke. Application of a replicate count N-mixture model to camera trap data from Boni National Reserve resulted in an estimate of 7.3 Aders’ duikers/km2 (95 % CI 4.5–10.1/km2). The results also indicate higher densities of suni Nesotragus moschatus and Harvey’s duiker Cephalophus harveyi in the northern forests relative to Arabuko-Sokoke. Blue duiker Philantomba monticola was recorded at low density in Arabuko-Sokoke forest but not detected at the northern sites. These findings significantly improve the conservation prospects for Aders’ duiker and highlight the global importance of the northern coastal forests of Kenya.

Large carnivores inhabiting ecosystems with heterogeneously distributed environmental resources with strong seasonal variations frequently employ opportunistic foraging strategies, often typified by seasonal switches in diet. In semi-arid ecosystems, herbivore distribution is generally more homogeneous in the wet season, when surface water is abundant, than in the dry season when only permanent sources remain. Here, we investigate the seasonal contribution of the different herbivore species, prey preference and distribution of kills (i.e. feeding locations) of African lions in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, a semi-arid African savanna structured by artificial waterholes. We used data from 245 kills and 74 faecal samples. Buffalo consistently emerged as the most frequently utilised prey in all seasons by both male (56%) and female (33%) lions, contributing the most to lion dietary biomass. Jacobs’ index also revealed that buffalo was the most intensively selected species throughout the year. For female lions, kudu and to a lesser extent the group “medium Bovidae” are the most important secondary prey. This study revealed seasonal patterns in secondary prey consumption by female lions partly based on prey ecology with browsers, such as giraffe and kudu, mainly consumed in the early dry season, and grazers, such as zebra and suids, contributing more to female diet in the late dry season. Further, it revealed the opportunistic hunting behaviour of lions for prey as diverse as elephants and mice, with elephants taken mostly as juveniles at the end of the dry season during droughts. Jacobs’ index finally revealed a very strong preference for kills within 2 km from a waterhole for all prey species, except small antelopes, in all seasons. This suggested that surface-water resources form passive traps and contribute to the structuring of lion foraging behaviour.

Abstract Aders’ duiker Cephalophus adersi is a small antelope endemic to the coastal forests of east Africa. Threatened by habitat loss and hunting, the species is categorized as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Until recently Aders’ duiker was known to persist only on Zanzibar, Tanzania, and in the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest National Reserve, Kenya. However, in 2004 a sighting of a single individual was reported from the Dodori forest in northern coastal Kenya, raising the possibility that the species survives elsewhere. Subsequently, an opportunistic camera-trap survey was conducted in September and October 2008 to establish the occurrence of Aders’ duiker in Kenyan coastal forests north of the Tana River. One hundred and fifty six images of Aders’ duikers were obtained from 12 of 28 camera-trap sites (46 of 358 camera-trap days), confirming the existence of a population of Aders’ duiker in the Boni–Dodori forest both inside and outside the National Reserves. In addition, we sighted individuals of the species on three occasions. The relatively high encounter rates per unit effort compared to similar data from Arabuko-Sokoke forest suggest the Boni–Dodori population is significant. Initial surveys of the local Awer community revealed that Aders’ duiker is well known by the name guno. These findings significantly improve the conservation prospects for Aders’ duiker and highlight the need for greater research and management efforts in the poorly known Boni–Dodori forest.

Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP), Qatar, is the only facility worldwide to keep the Beira antelope Dorcatragus megalotis, a small antelope from East Africa, listed as Vulnerable by The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Physical, behavioural and physiological characteristics of the species are described in detail, based on observations in captivity. At AWWP, the Beira antelope population increased from 2000 until 2006 when it declined dramatically as a result of an epidemic‐like outbreak of a respiratory disease most likely owing to a Mycoplasma infection. Management at AWWP includes a diet based on natural forage, careful group composition, enclosure design adapted to the need of the species and close monitoring. Apart from their important conservation status, Beira antelope are highly attractive animals with a particular shape and coloration, and a docile nature.
