Comprehensive analysis of 2,5-dimethyl-1-(naphthalen-1-yl)-1H-pyrrole: X-ray crystal structure, spectral, computational, molecular properties, docking studies, molecular dynamics, and MMPBSA

This study examines the features of 2,5-dimethyl-1-(naphthalen-1-yl)-1H-pyrrole (DN1HP) in terms of its structure, vibrations, electronic transition properties, biological activity, and thermodynamic characteristics. X-ray single crystal structure solved and analysed. With the use of spectroscopic methods like FT-IR and UV–vis, the compound has been described. These experimental findings were contrasted with information derived from DFT (B3LYP) computations with the basis set 6–311++G(d,p). Vibrational allocations and Potential energy distribution(PED) were computed after optimizing the DN1PH compound's shape. The outcome of every experiment matched the values predicted by theory. To further investigate the reactivity, stability and biological activity of the titular molecule, calculations were made for the electrophilicity index (3.053), energy gap (3.789 eV), EH (−5.2962 eV), and EL (−1.5069 eV). To determine the compound's electrophilic and nucleophilic locations, a Molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) diagram was established. Molecular docking experiments have demonstrated the potential of the molecule in question as an anti-HIV medication. The binding energies of the drug to the proteins 3MLU, 3QEG, 5DHZ, and 3MLY are −5.86, −5.04, −5.01 and −4.97 kcal/mol, respectively. Synthesis, characterization, and biological activity of a fresh class of sonochemically synthesized Cu2+ complexes

The synthesis and characterization of metal complexes have garnered significant attention due to their versatile applications in scientific and biomedical fields. In this research, two novel copper (Cu) complexes, [Cu(L)(L′)(H2O)2] (1) and [Cu(L)(Im)H2O] (2), where L = pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, L′ = 2,4-diamino-6-hydroxypyrimidine, and Im = imidazole, were investigated concerning their sonochemical synthesis, spectroscopic analysis, and biological activity. The complexes’ structural characterization was achieved using analytical techniques, including single-crystal X-ray structure determination, FTIR, PXRD, TGA and DTA, SEM, TEM, and EDS. Complex (1) displayed a six-coordinated Cu2+ ion, while complex (2) exhibited a five-coordinated Cu2+ ion. The crystal structures revealed monoclinic (C2/c) and triclinic (P-1) space groups, respectively. Both complexes showcased zero-dimensional (0D) supramolecular networks, primarily driven by hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking interactions, which played pivotal roles in stabilizing the structures and shaping the unique supramolecular architecture. Both complexes demonstrated significant antioxidant activity, suggesting their capability to neutralize free radicals and mitigate oxidative stress-related diseases. Hemolysis percentages were less than 2%, per the ASTM F756-00 standard, indicating non-hemolytic behavior. Low cytotoxicity was observed against fibroblast and MCF-7 cell lines. They do not exhibit antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. These findings suggest that the synthesized Cu2+‒complexes hold considerable promise for applications in drug delivery and cancer treatment. This research contributes to the advancement of supramolecular chemistry and the development of multifunctional materials for diverse scientific and medical applications.

Synthesis of base-modified fluorescent furo[3,2-c]coumarin nucleosides and their photophysical studies

A small library of fluorescent furo[3,2-c]coumarin nucleoside analogues has been successfully synthesized via a one-pot condensation reaction of 3′,5′-di-O-acetyl-5-formyl-2′-deoxyuridine, alkyl isocyanides, and differently substituted 4-hydroxycoumarins in acetonitrile at 80 °C. Further, the synthesized compounds have been characterized by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 1H–1H COSY, 1H–13C HETCOR, 2D NOESY NMR experiments, HRMS measurements and single crystal X-ray structure analysis of compound 5-(2′'-N-(cyclohexyl)-amino-4′'H-furo[3,2-c]chromen-4-one-3′'-yl)-2′-deoxyuridine. The electronic structure of these modified nucleosides has been examined by Density Functional Theory (DFT). The synthesized nucleoside analogues exhibited a prominent emission spectrum, featuring a band around 500 nm (with excitation at 380 nm). Photophysical investigations revealed a noteworthy fluorescence intensity, along with excellent Stokes shift values (54–194 nm) and higher quantum yields (0.010–0.515) in comparison to other pyrimidine-based fluorescent nucleosides. The solvatochromic studies of 5-(2′'-N-(cyclohexyl)-amino-8′'‑chloro-4′'H-furo[3,2-c]chromen-4-one-3′'-yl)-2′-deoxyuridine determined the quantum yield (ΦF) to be 0.515 in DMSO (λabs = 388 nm). This emphasizes the potential utility of these modified nucleosides in probing the local structure and dynamics of nucleic acids. Moreover, the scalability of the synthesis protocol was effectively demonstrated by producing one of the compounds on a gram scale, exhibiting its practical viability for large-scale production.

Design and synthesis of two new thiosemicarbazide based Schiff base metal complexes of nickel (II): DNA binding study and cytotoxicity profile analysis

Two new nickel (II) substituted thiosemicarbazone Schiff base complexes [Ni(meph)2] (1) [where H2meph = (2E)-N-methyl-2-[1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene]hydrazine-1-carbothioamide] and [Ni(hmm)2](NO3)2·2H2O (2) [where H2hmm = (2E)-2-[(2-hydroxyphenyl)methylidene]-N-methylhydrazine-1-carbothioamide] have been designed and synthesized by the condensation of 4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazide with 2-acetylpyridine and salicylaldehyde respectively. Both the metal complexes 1 and 2 are characterized using different available spectroscopic techniques like FT-IR, UV–Vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single crystal X-ray structure analysis. X-ray crystal structure analysis reveal that complex 1 and 2 are octahedral Ni(II) complexes. The calf-thymus CT-DNA-binding property of 1 and 2 has been evaluated by employing UV–Vis and fluorescence spectral titration. All the results show that CT-DNA binds with both nickel(II) complexes 1 and 2. In vitro cytotoxicity activity of complexes 1 and 2 toward A375 and MDA-MB-231 was evaluated using MTT assay and other methods which confirm that both complexes 1 and 2 behave as promising anti-cancer agents.

In-silico antibacterial activity of piperazinyl-based copper(II) metallo-organic pharmacophores

The piperazinyl-based Cu(II)-Schiff base complex {[Cu(HL1′)(N3)]2∙(ClO4)2·4H2O} (1) [HL1′ is the Zwitter ionic form of (E)-2-((2-piperazin-1-ylethylimino)methyl)phenol] was synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The X-ray single crystal structure analysis shows that the asymmetric unit of 1 contains a four-coordinate discrete complex cation, [Cu(HL1′)(N3)]+ (1a), with a perchlorate anion and a lattice water molecule. Two square planar units of 1a are dimerized by weak Cu···N intermolecular interaction, forming [Cu(HL1′)(N3)]2 2+ (1′a). DFT and TD-DFT calculations of the monomeric cationic unit, [Cu(HL1′)(N3)]+ (1a) were performed. In-silico antibacterial activities of HL1 as well as monomeric and dimeric cationic units 1a and 1'a, respectively, were performed and study shows that 1a (EC50 0.30 μM) and 1′a (EC50 0.06 μM) may be treated as antibacterial drugs after in-vivo analysis and clinical testing.

Synthesis, structure, characterization and one pot catalytic activity of half-sandwich iridium(III) complexes

A series of stable mononuclear half-sandwich iridium(III) complexes of the general formula [(η5-C5Me5)Ir(L)Cl](BPh4) has been synthesized in dry methanol using different imino pyridine ligands (L1–L6) and [(η5-C5Me5)2Ir2(µ-Cl)2Cl2] in a 2:1 molar ratio. All complexes were fully characterized by melting point, CHN analysis, FT-IR, UV–visible, 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The structure of complex 3 [(η5-C5Me5)Ir(L3)Cl](BPh4) was determined by single crystal X-ray structure analysis, showing a chelating coordination mode of the imino pyridine L3. One pot organic transformations of aldehyde to amide were carried out by complexes 1–6 in toluene at 110 °C in the presence of hydroxyl amine hydrochloride and sodium bicarbonate. The catalytic activity of complex 3 was found to be excellent, showing high conversion with catalytic turnover frequency up to 500.

The Dialuminene AriPr8AlAlAriPr8 (AriPr8 = C6H-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-iPr3)2-3,5-iPr2).

Careful analysis of the crystals formed in the reduction of AriPr8AlI2 (AriPr8 = C6H-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-iPr3)2-3,5-iPr2) with sodium on sodium chloride showed them to contain the long sought-after dialuminene AriPr8AlAlAriPr8 (1) that forms alongside the previously characterized alanediyl:AlAriPr8. The single crystal X-ray structure of 1 revealed a nearly planar, trans-bent C(ipso)AlAlC(ipso) core with an Al-Al distance of 2.648(2) Å. The molecular and electronic structure of 1 are consistent with a Al-Al double dative interaction augmented with diradical character and stabilized by dispersion interactions. Density functional theory calculations showed that the reactivity of:AlAriPr8 with dihydrogen involves 1, not:AlAriPr8, as the reactive species. In contrast, the reaction of:AlAriPr8 with ethylene gave two products, the 1,4-dialuminacyclohexane AriPr8Al(C2H4)2AlAriPr8 (2) and the aluminacyclopentane AriPr8Al(C4H8) (3), that can both form from the aluminacyclopropane intermediate AriPr8Al(C2H4). Although the [2+2+2] cycloaddition of 1 with two equivalents of ethylene was also calculated to be exergonic, it is likely to be kinetically blocked by the numerous isopropyl substituents surrounding the Al-Al bond. Attempts to fine-tune the steric bulk of the terphenyl ligand to allow stronger Al-Al bonding were unsuccessful, leading to the isolation of the sodium salt of a cyclotrialuminene, Na2[AlAriPr6]3 (4), instead of AriPr6AlAlAriPr6.

Recurrent Supramolecular Patterns in a Series of Salts of Heterocyclic Polyamines and Heterocyclic Dicarboxylic Acids: Synthesis, Single-Crystal X-ray Structure, Hirshfeld Surface Analysis, Energy Framework, and Quantum Chemical Calculations

A series of novel salts based on aromatic polyamines and 2,3-pyrazinedicarboxylic acid, such as C10H12N6O5 (1), C10H9ClN6O4 (2), C11H10N8O4 (3), and C14H17N16O5.5 (4) or 3,4-thiophenedicarboxylic acid, such as C10H10N4O4S (5), C10H9ClN4O4S (6), and C10H10N4O4S2 (7), were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All compounds crystallize in a monoclinic space group. The structure was subjected to complex Hirshfeld surface analysis, molecular electrostatic potential, enrichment ratio, and energy framework calculations. The influence of different cations on the packing of 3-carboxypyrazine-2-carboxylate and 4-carboxythiophene-3-carboxylate anions in the crystal lattice was studied. O…H/H…O interactions are the main contributor in all crystals. In addition, in a series of pyrazine-containing structures, N(C)…H/H…N(C) interactions have relevance, while in a series of thiophene-based compounds, C…H/H…C and S…H(O)/H(O)…S. In addition, Cl-based interactions are observed in compound 2. According to the enrichment ratio calculations, O…H/H…O and C…C are the most preferable interactions in all structures. The energy frameworks are dominated by the dispersive contribution, only in compound 3 is the electrostatic term dominant. The analyzed structures reveal intra- and intermolecular recurrent supramolecular synthons. In both series of crystals, the robust H-bonded centrosymmetric dimer R22(8) as homo- or as heterosynthon (in compounds 2, 3, 6, and 7) and the intramolecular synthon S(7) generated by O-H…O interactions (in compounds 2, 6, and 7) are present. The supramolecular patterns formed by π…π (C…C) and C-O(Cl,S)…C are also noticeable. Notably, a dual synthon linking the supramolecular chain via π…π interactions and the homosynthon R22(8) via N-H…N interactions is visible in both series of new salts. A library of H-bonding motifs at diverse levels of supramolecular architecture is provided. We extended the analysis of intramolecular H-bonding motifs to similar structures deposited in the Cambridge Structural Database. Another important feature is the existence of an intramolecular O…H…O bridge between two neighboring carboxylic groups as substituents in anions in compounds 3 and 5. In this context, we performed quantum theory of atoms-in-molecule calculations to reveal more details.

Sandwich-type thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecules with through-space charge transfer excited state for red OLEDs

Exploring through-space charge transfer (TSCT) excited state for the design of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters has been receiving increasing interest for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this work, we developed two TSCT-TADF molecules, namely 2DPXZ-QX and 2DPXZ-DFQX, which have sandwich-type donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) structures supported by two carbazole bridges. Dibenzo[a,c]phenazine (QX) and its fluorinated derivative (DFQX) were used as the acceptors and O-bridged triphenylamine (DPXZ) was used as the donor. The two donors and acceptor in each molecule are aligned in a face-to-face orientation and thus result in the presence of intramolecular π–π interactions, as revealed by their single crystal X-ray structures. The emission maxima (λPL) of 2DPXZ-QX and 2DPXZ-DFQX in doped 1,3-bis(N-carbazolyl)benzene films are 595 and 600 nm with photoluminescence quantum yields of 67 % and 54 %, respectively. The delayed fluorescence lifetimes are 8.8 and 6.7 μs. OLEDs based on the new sandwich-type emitters show maximum external quantum efficiencies of up to 19.1 %.

Synthesis of a Palladium Dimer Supported by a C-Bound Trifluoroacetonate Bridge Formed by Cleavage of a Hexafluoroacetylacetonate Ligand.

Palladium(II) hexafluoroacetylacetonate (Pd(Hfacac)2) is known to form adducts of bases, such as lutidine (2,6-dimethylpyridine). When treated with approximately 3 equiv of lutidine, Pd(Hfacac)2 yields a 1:1 complex as reported in the literature, Pd(O,O-Hfacac)(C-Hfacac)(lutidine), 1. However, when the amount of excess lutidine is increased, a new complex, 2, is formed. A single-crystal X-ray structure of 2 proves it is a rare example of a dimeric palladium complex containing two Pd(Hfacac)(lutidine) fragments bridged by a dianionic trifluoroacetonate ligand, μ-CHC(O)CF3. The formation of 2 is accompanied by a white precipitate determined to be a mixture of trans-Pd(O2CCF3)2(lutidine)2 (3), confirming the fate of the missing trifluoroacetate fragment from the cleavage of the Hfacac ligand, and [lutidinium][Hfacac] (4). Subsequent experiments revealed the determinative role that water played in this reaction. The mechanism of cleavage of the Hfacac ligand was explored by DFT methods.

Three new complexes of Zn(II) with a quinoline based Schiff base ligand: Syntheses, crystal architectures, Hirshfeld surface analyses, DFT study, photoluminescence and thermal properties

This report deals with one dinuclear and two mononuclear zinc(II) complexes of compositions [Zn2L2(μ1,1-N3)(N3)] (1), [ZnL(NCO)(H2O)] (2) and [ZnL(NCS)(H2O)] (3), where HL ((E)-2-ethoxy-6-((quinolin-8-ylimino)methyl)phenol)) is the 1:1 condensation product of 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde and 8-aminoquinoline. All the three metal complexes have been characterized by C, H, N elemental analyses, FT-IR spectra, single crystal X-ray structures and powder XRD. The structures of 2 and 3 are isomorphous. The metal centres in 1–3 are five coordinated and adopt vacant octahedral or distorted square pyramidal geometry for 1 and distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry for 2 and 3. Supramolecular interactions and topologies in all the three crystal structures have been analyzed, revealing 3–D assemblies in 1–3 due to a number of non-covalent interactions (C–H···O, C–H···N and π···π in 1; C–H···O, O–H···O, O–H···N, π···π and C–H···π in 2; C–H···S, O–H···O, O–H···N, π···π and C–H···π in 3). To gain additional insight into the intermolecular contacts and their relative contributions towards the packing, Hirshfeld surface analyses have been undertaken for 1–3 and demonstrated in detail with respect to structural parameters, depressions in surfaces, fingerprint plots and enrichment ratios. The thermo-gravimetric and differential thermal analyses (TG/DTA) have been performed and the decomposition patterns are well explained. Steady state and time resolved fluorescence properties have been investigated. Optical band gaps have been determined from the data of the UV–Vis spectra. DFT calculations have been undertaken. The DFT computed HOMO-LUMO gaps corroborate the optical gaps and the DFT computed electrostatic potential (ESP) surfaces rationalize the supramolecular interactions nicely.

Facile synthesis of imidazolidinyl phenolate supported Dicopper(II/II) Complexes: Activation and fixation of atmospheric CO2 as MeOCO2− showing exogenous bridge modulating magnetic exchange coupling

Two imidazolidine grafted Schiff bases H3L2 and H3L3 have been utilized to fasten the Cu2 core in four new complexes [Cu2(μ-L2)(μ-O2CMe)]·H2O (1·H2O), [Cu2(μ-L2)(μ-O2COMe)]·H2O (2·H2O), [Cu2(μ-L2)(μ-NO3)]·H2O (3·H2O) and [Cu2L3(μ-OAc)]·5H2O (4·5H2O). Room temperature solution reaction of H3L2 with Cu2(OAc)4·2H2O provided 1·H2O in good yield. Follow-up reaction of 1·H2O with Et4NOH in air replaces μ-O2CMe (acetato) bridge by MeOCO2− (monomethyl carbonato) linker in 2·H2O. Single crystal X-ray structure established the individual complexes and confirmed the fixation of atmospheric CO2. Variable temperature (2 to 300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements recognized the antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the adjacent copper(II) centers in complexes 2 and 3. The amount of spin–spin interactions are found to be higher for ancillary NO3− bridge (−284 cm−1) compared to the in situ transformed MeOCO2− bridged (−1.64 cm−1).

β-Enaminones and organic salts from 3-benzoyl-4‑hydroxy-6-phenyl-2H-pyran-2-one: Synthesis, X-ray crystal structural studies and antimicrobial activity

The reactivity of pyran-2,4‑dione 1 towards primary amines (propylamine and p-toluidine) and secodary amines (morpholine and piperidine) were investigated. The reactions were proceeded by replacement of the external alcoholic hydroxyl group with primary amine accompanied by loss of water molecule to give β-enamino-pyran-2,4-diones 2 and 3. In case of secondary amines, a transfer of the phenolic proton of pyrone ring to the secondary amine nitrogen leading to the formation of the corresponding quaternary ammonium salts of morpholine 4 and piperidine 5, respectively. The X-ray single crystal structures of 2 and 4 proved with no doubt the proposed structure based on the spectral characterization. The percentages of the H…H, O…H, and C…H interactions are in the range of 49.2–50.6 %, 19.6–19.8 and 27.6–28.6 %, respectively in case of 2 based on Hirshfeld topology analysis. For the two cationic units in 4, the C…H (15.9–18.5 %), H…H (42.9–43.1) and O…H (38.2–40.5 %) are the most important. The two anionic units showed different types of intermolecular interactions. In one unit, the O…H (23.4 %), C…H (28.4 %) and C…C (1.3 %) contacts are the most important while in the other anionic unit the O…H (23.3 %), C…H (26.7 %), C…O (5.7 %) and C…C (1.6 %) interactions are the most significant. The inhibition zones of 1 (18 mm), 4 (22 mm), and 5 (20 mm) indicated greater activity against S. aureus, compared to streptomycin (16 mm) and neomycin (13 mm). Compounds 1–5 showed nearly two-fold as much antifungicidal activity against C. albicans compared to some conventional medicines such as Neomycin and Streptomycin.

An Unexpected Degradation Pathway of N-Hydroxy-5-Methylfuran-2-Sulfonamide (BMS-986231), a pH Sensitive Prodrug of HNO, in a Prototype Formulation Solution

N-hydroxy-5-methylfuran-2-sulfonamide (BMS-986231, Cimlanod) was being developed as a pH-sensitive prodrug of HNO (nitroxyl) for the treatment of acute decompensated heart failure. During a stressed study of Cimlanod in a prototype formulation solution (pH 4.5) at 40°C, a predominant unknown degradant along with three previously identified degradants were observed. The unknown degradant was isolated from the stressed solution via preparative HPLC but totally decomposed during freeze-drying. LC-HRMS analysis of the isolated unknown degradant, prior to freeze-drying, revealed an empirical formula equivalent to the adduct of Cimlanod with SO2 even though SO2 was not added in the prototype formulation solution. The unknown degradant was synthesized from Cimlanod and DABSO ((1,4-diazabiscyclo[2,2,2]octane bis(sulfur dioxide) adduct) and isolated as a crystalline DABCO (1,4-diazabiscyclo[2,2,2]octane) salt for single crystal X-ray structure elucidation. The degradation of Cimlanod increased when the solution was exposed to air, as compared to N2 atmosphere. A plausible mechanism was postulated for the unexpected degradation pathway of Cimlanod. This study provided in-depth stability knowledge of Cimlanod, which will be beneficial to the subsequent stability indicating method development and validation as well as the registrational applications on the content and qualification of impurities in new drug products.

Octahedral Hexanuclear Rhenium Cluster Dimers Bridged by Pyrazine or 4,4'-Bipyridine with 23- and 24-Electron Configurations.

New pyrazine (pz)- and 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy)-bridged octahedral hexanuclear rhenium(III) cluster dimers, [{Re6(μ3-S)8Cl5}2(μ-L)]6- (L = pz, [1]6-; L = 4,4'-bpy, [2]6-), with 2 × 24 d-electrons {Re6(24e)}2 were obtained in a single-step reaction via photoirradiation of [Re6(μ3-S)8Cl6]4- with L in a 2:1 ratio at room temperature. The {Re6(23e)}2 dimers, [{Re6(μ3-S)8Cl5}2(μ-L)]4- (L = pz, [1']4-; L = 4,4'-bpy, [2']4-), were synthesized through two-electron oxidation of [1]6- and [2]6-, respectively. The single-crystal X-ray structures of [1]6- and [1']4- were determined, revealing structural distortion of the Re6 core of [1']4- due to the Jahn-Teller effect. The cyclic voltammograms of [1]6- and [2]6- showed two steps of one-electron redox processes attributable to Re6(23e)Re6(24e)/{Re6(24e)}2 and {Re6(23e)}2/Re6(23e)Re6(24e), respectively. The separation between the two redox potentials is small (0.056 V for [1]6- and 0.039 V for [2]6-). The magnetic susceptibilities of [1']4- and [2']4- were almost temperature-independent, with values of 2.98 and 2.85 μB, respectively, indicating paramagnetism. These results suggest weak electronic interaction between two cluster units bridged by pz or 4,4'-bpy in the intercluster mixed valence state. The compounds [1]6- and [2]6- show photoluminescence in the near-infrared region at 296 K in the solid state.

Sequential Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution Reactions of Activated Halogens.

Building blocks have been identified that can be functionalised by sequential nucleophilic aromatic substitution. Some examples are reported that involve the formation of cyclic benzodioxin and phenoxathiine derivatives from 4,5-difluoro-1,2-dinitrobenzene, racemic quinoxaline thioethers, and sulfones from 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline and (2-aminophenylethane)-2,5-dithiophenyl-4-nitrobenzene from 1-(2-aminophenylethane)-2-fluoro-4,5-dinitrobenzene. Four X-ray single-crystal structure determinations are reported, two of which show short intermolecular N-O…N "π hole" contacts.

Synthesis and Analysis of (g,g', g'', - Trifluoro)neopentyl (TFNP) Aryl ethers as a Polar Aliphatic Motif.

A route is developed to (g,g',g''''-trifluoro)neopentyl (TFNP) aryl ethers to extend the methods for the introduction of the tert-butyl group, carrying a fluorine on each of the methyl substituents. The route combines neopentyltosylate 3 with phenols and thiophenols to give efficient substitution reactions to the corresponding TFNP aryl ethers. The three C-F bonds adopt a helical propeller conformation as revealed by computation and single crystal X-ray structure analysis. The LogPs of TFNP ethers are lower (more hydrophilic) than their tert-butyl analogues. The metabolism of selected TFNP ethers was explored in the fungus Cunninghamella elegans.

Directional Electron Flow in a Selenoviologen-Based Tetracationic Cyclophane for Enhanced Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution.

Directional electron flow in the photocatalyst enables efficient charge separation, which is essential for efficient photocatalysis of H2 production. Here, we report a novel class of tetracationic cyclophanes (7) incorporating bipyridine Pt(II) and selenoviologen. X-ray single-crystal structures reveal that 7 not only fixes the distances and spatial positions between its individual units but also exhibits a box-like rigid electron-deficient cavity. Moreover, host-guest recognition phenomena are observed between 7 and ferrocene, forming host-guest complexes with a 1:1stoichiometryin MeCN. 7exhibits good redox properties, narrow energy gaps, and strong absorption in the visible range (370-500 nm) due to containing two selenoviologen(SeV2+)units.Meanwhile, the femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) reveals that 7 has stabilized dicationic biradical, efficient charge separation, and facilitates directional electron flow to achieve efficient electron transfer due to the formation of rigid cyclophane and electronic architecture. Then, 7 is applied to visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution with high hydrogen production (132 μmol), generation rate (11 μmol/h),turnover number (221), and apparent quantum yield (1.7%), which provides a simplified and efficient photocatalytic strategy for solar energy conversion.

P1-xTa8+xN13(x = 0.1-0.15): A Phosphorus Tantalum Nitride Featuring Mixed-Valent Tantalum and P/Ta Disorder Visualized by Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy.

We report on the synthesis, crystal, and electronic structure, as well as the magnetic, and electric properties of the phosphorus-containing tantalum nitride P1-xTa8+xN13 (x = 0.1-0.15). A high-pressure high-temperature reaction (8 GPa, 1400 °C) of Ta3N5 and P3N5 with NH4F as a mineralizing agent yields the compound in the form of black, rod-shaped crystals. Single-crystal X-ray structure elucidation (space group C2/m (no. 12), a = 16.202(3), b = 2.9155(4), c = 11.089(2)Å, β = 126.698(7)°, Z = 2) shows a network of face- and edge-sharing Ta-centered polyhedra that contains small vacant channels and PN6 octahedra strands. Atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals an unusual P/Ta disorder. Mixed-valent tantalum atoms exhibit interatomic distances similar to those in metallic tantalum, however, the electrical resistivity is quite high in the order of 10‑1Ωcm. The density of states and the electron localization function indicate localized electrons in both covalent and ionic bonds between P/Ta and N atoms, combined with less localized electrons that do not contribute to interatomic bonds.

Layer-Ordered Organooxotin Clusters for Extreme-Ultraviolet Photolithography.

Extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) photolithography, which enables the high-throughput production of well-defined patterns with critical dimensions on the scale of several nanometers, is essential for the fabrication of a highly integrated semiconductor. The full exploitation of EUV lithographic techniques necessitates the development of photoresist (PR) materials with both high EUV sensitivity and a long shelf-life. However, despite notable advances, the available library of EUV PR materials remains limited. Here we report EUV PRs capable of forming preorganized layers consisting of ladder-structured tetranuclear stannoxanes. Single-crystal X-ray structure analyses reveal a close interlayer distance of 8.5 Å through interdigitation of the pseudoaxial butyl chains. The developed EUV PR materials exhibit high solubility in organic solvents commonly used in semiconductor processing, enabling the preparation of PR solutions with superior wettability and uniform film-forming ability on Si wafer substrates. These PR solutions also demonstrate notable resistance to hydrolytic decomposition for as long as 1 month, indicating a long shelf-life. Our PR materials enabled negative-tone patterning processes that involved a solubility decrease upon irradiation. The presence of chromophoric ligands makes our PR materials compatible with conventional UV photolithography, through photochemical reactions involving carbonyl units. In addition, e-beam and EUV lithography could produce fine line patterns of our PRs, with critical dimensions of 20 and 15 nm, respectively. Our research showcases the potential of layer-ordered organooxotin clusters for EUV PR applications.
