Oral Customs of Javvaadhumalai Malayalis

Tamil Nadu consists of the Eastern and Western Ghats. There are thirty-six tribal people living in these hills including "Adiyaan, Aranaadan, Eravaalan, Irular, Oorali, and Kaniyan." The Eastern Ghats have Javvaadhumalai, Yelagirimalai, Kalvarayanmalai, Servarayanmalai, Chitherimalai, Pachaimalai, Paalamalai, Vattalmalai, Neyyaamalai, Jarugumalai, Parukkurmalai, Kaalimalai, Kadakadalai, and Kollimalai hills. The divisions of the population living in the Western Ghats cannot be seen in these hills. The hills are mainly inhabited by Malayali tribes. The life of these javvaadhu hill people is a simple life. They are also preserving the arts according to the environment in which they live. The oral literature in their case helps to know the life and culture of the hill people.

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN LIFESTYLE AND MENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS AMONG WOMEN IN THREE BIG CITIES OF INDONESIA

Background: Menopause is a natural physiological event that occurs in middle-aged women and is characterized by the cessation of menstruation for at least one year following the last menstrual period. Menopause symptoms include somatic symptoms, psychological symptoms, and urogenital symptoms. Menopause symptoms and their severity vary from person to person due to numerous factors, one of which is a persons lifestyle. Lifestyle aspects related to menopausal symptoms and observed in this study include dietary habits, physical activity, stress levels, and sleep habits. This research examined at the correlation between lifestyle and symptoms in postmenopausal women. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted using a random sampling technique in which 70 postmenopausal women who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected from 3 communities in Batam, Makassar and Surabaya. The variables observed included menopausal symptoms as measured by the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) instrument and lifestyle as measured by the Simple Lifestyle Indicator Questionnaire (SLIQ) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) instruments. Results: There was a strong correlation between lifestyle and menopausal symptoms (p=0.007), with a unidirectional and adequate relationship between the two variables (r=0.318). However, there is no significant relationship between sleep quality and menopausal symptoms (p=0.150), with a unidirectional and very weak relationship between the two variables. Conclusion: Postmenopausal women may experience fewer symptoms the healthier their lifestyle choices, but there is no solid evidence linking poor sleep to menopausal symptoms.

Revealing Trader's Sustainability in The Lok Baintan’s Floating Market

Purpose — This paper revealed the trader’s sustainability in Lok Baintan’s floating market using an interpretive paradigm and the religionist phenomenological approach. Design/methodology/approach—A religionist phenomenology approach (which developed Husserl’s transcendental with a religionist paradigm) was used to conduct in-depth interviews and site observation. Some relevant literature was also used to sharpen the maps of findings. Findings—The result states that Lok Baintan’s floating market is sustainable and supported by religious values. These values became a basic value for traders to survive in. Those traders believe that everything has its own fortune and has been arranged by God. This belief made them keep enlivening and trading along the river in Lok Baintan’s floating market. Practical implications — The belief that God has arranged all beings' fortunes has led traders to give up on the conditions of nature’s environment where they lived. This made them survive and enliven the Lok Baintan’s Floating Market. Originality/value — This paper argues that religious values and beliefs have influenced Banjarese (local people) to keep their simple lives lasting until now. This is the key to sustainability in the Lok Baintan Floating Market.

Археологические параллели элементам традиционного костюма народов Восточного Гиндукуша

The article analyzes 22 details of the costume of Kafirs and partially the Kalasha of Hindukush which have close analogies among related ancient Iranian-speaking peoples of Pre-Islamic time. The Indo-Scythians and Kushans, who created large powers nearby in the 1st c. BC — 1st c. AD, have the most of such analogies. These peoples had an impact on the clothing of the local Indo-Iranians and, probably, participated in their ethnic history. The infl uence of the ancient Iranian peoples, who lived closer to the Hindukush, manifested itself in large costume accessories, as well as in headdresses and hairstyles. It is also easy to explain the presence of similar elements in the “world empire” of the Achaemenids and among such an active people in the early Middle Ages as the Sogdians. However, many details of the costume of the somewhat isolated societies of the highlands with their simple rural life did not find analogies in the ceremonial art for the elite of various Iranian peoples. Collaboration between a cultural anthropologist and an archaeologist seems to be important to solve this problem. New methods of such joint research are proposed.

Moral Message on Movie [John Fiske Semiotics Analysis

The purpose of this study is to find out the moral message contained in the film The New Rich People. With descriptive qualitative research methods, using John Fiske semiotics analysis though three levels, namely: Reality Level, Representation Level, and Ideology Level. The results of this study show that the film The New Rich People there are many moral message conveyed to the audience, harmonious, have children who are smart and good, love each other and care for each other, friends who are always there in a state of joy and sorrow. A simple life is better than a luxurious life but not feeling happy, not making out something can be bought with money.

Islamic boarding schools are educational institutions that provide maximum and in-depth religious learning. Islamic boarding schools have their own uniqueness in fostering their students, namely the independent attitude of various parties including the government. Islamic boarding schools stand and develop from the community so that they have freedom in providing educational regulations and are not bound by standard government regulations. Islamic boarding schools have characteristics that do not change with the times and technology. Islamic boarding schools are one of the moral development institutions. Islamic boarding school education increases religious knowledge and moral formation and teaches the character of honesty to prepare students for a simple life with a heart that is clean from reprehensible traits. The role of the kiai in moral formation is very crucial among the different character backgrounds of the santri. The role of the kiai is through exemplary, habituation of discipline which is enforced as a rule in Islamic boarding schools. The focus of this research is to find out the concept of reciting the Ihya' Ulumuddin Book by Imam Al-Ghazali at the Assuniyah Kencong Jember Islamic Boarding School, the implementation of moral education values based on the thoughts of Imam Al-Ghazali in the Ihya' 'Ulumuddin book and the learning model for the Ihya' 'Ulumuddin book in Assuniyah Kencong Jember Islamic boarding school. This study uses a qualitative approach, emphasizing its analysis on the comparative inference process of the dynamics of the phenomena relationship using scientific logic. The result of this research is the recitation of the Ihya' book, the method used is the bandongan method and lectures from the kiyai. Activities carried out in Islamic boarding schools are activities related to religious activities, students are limited to the environment outside the Islamic boarding school. This research has conceptual findings with the NIAT model which stands for Nurut, Istiqomah, Actualization, Tawaduk.

Depression, Self-Esteem, and Lifestyle Factors Among University Students in Singapore and Malaysia

Depression is one of the leading mental health disorders that occurs frequently among university students. Self-esteem and lifestyle factors are modifiable factors that have the potential of preventing depression. The study aimed to explore the relationship for depression, self-esteem, and lifestyle factors among university students in Singapore and Malaysia, and whether individual lifestyle factors mediate the relationship. Participants completed an online questionnaire that consisted of socio-demographic, Beck Depression Inventory-ll. Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Simple Lifestyle Indicator Questionnaire. Data analyses showed that low self-esteem, diet, high smoking, and stress predicted an increase in the level of depression. Stress was a significant mediator for self-esteem and depression. Findings suggested that those with low self-esteem perceived stress as unmanageable, thereby increasing the level of depression scores.

Finding Positives Amidst the Negatives: A Thematic Analysis of the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Canadians 55+

Disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic exact a toll on vulnerable populations in terms of morbidity and mortality, but they also provide opportunities for personal growth and development and demonstration of personal and collective resiliency. This inductive thematic analysis explores self-perceived negative and positive impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on 2994 Canadians aged 55+. Data derive from response to two open-ended questions included in a national online survey (<a href="https://www.sfu.ca/content/dam/sfu/lgbteol/pdf/COVID%20ACP%20Survey%20COPY%20PDF.pdf">View Survey (sfu.ca)</a>) conducted between August-October 2020. Respondents were recruited using Facebook, and a widespread email campaign to organizations serving older adults. 4260 of the 6573 coded comments (66%) addressed negative impacts of COVID-19. Fewer but still a considerable number (n = 2313) addressed positive impacts. The negative comments had a mean of 24.5 words per response (SD = 31.7, range: 1-560), while the positive comments had a mean of 21.3 words (SD = 27, range: 1-448). Five overarching themes characterized negative impacts of the virus in the lives of these older adults: disruption in daily life and plans; disruption in social relations; impact on health and wellness; healthcare and caregiving; and views on the pandemic. An additional five themes identified positive impacts: personal development; relationships; simpler life; benefits in work and finance; and introvert’s dream. Gender differences are consistent with expectations based on gender roles and activities: men were more likely to mention disrupted daily lives in particular as related to work, women were more likely to mention disrupted social relations, while health was mentioned to a comparable extent by both men and women. The negative themes illuminate the deep impact and disruption caused by the pandemic. The positive themes highlight adaptability and successful coping strategies which may be useful in the development of recovery plans and programming to help mitigate the negative effects of future pandemics.

The Midlife Crisis

This paper documents a longitudinal crisis of midlife among the inhabitants of rich nations. Yet middle‐aged citizens in our datasets are close to their peak earnings, have typically experienced little or no illness, reside in some of the safest countries in the world, and live in the most prosperous era in human history. This is paradoxical and troubling. The finding is consistent, however, with the prediction—one little‐known to economists—of Elliott Jaques (1965). Our analysis does not rest on elementary cross‐sectional analysis. Instead, the paper uses panel and through‐time data on, in total, approximately 500,000 individuals. It checks that the key results are not due to cohort effects. Nor do we rely on simple life satisfaction measures. The paper shows that there are approximately quadratic hill‐shaped patterns in data on midlife suicide, sleeping problems, alcohol dependence, concentration difficulties, memory problems, intense job strain, disabling headaches, suicidal feelings, and extreme depression. We believe that the seriousness of this societal problem has not been grasped by the affluent world's policy‐makers.

A defect-based fatigue life estimation method for laser additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy at elevated temperature in very high cycle regime

The application of Laser additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy in aeroengine industry requires feasible life prediction methods at the service temperature. The very high cycle fatigue tests are conducted for a laser additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy, and the effects of building direction, temperature, and defect size are discussed. To establish a simple and accurate life prediction method, this study links defect area to fatigue life. The information of defect location, size, and morphology are integrated in a parameter reflecting the stress around defect, which is applied in modified Steuer’s model. The prediction results are with an accuracy of factor two.

Analysis of the History of the Islamization of Java

The Javanese people or more precisely the Javanese people, in cultural anthropology, are people who in their simple lives use the Javanese language with various dialects for generations. The Javanese people are those who live in the areas of Central Java and East Java, and they come from both regions. This dynamism is the belief that what they have built is the result of adaptation to struggle with nature. This Javanese culture is continuously maintained by the nobility and the nobility or Javanese intellectuals. The two cultures have their own characteristics. The peasant culture living in the countryside is a small tradition that is still dominated by the oral tradition, while the aristocratic culture has developed a tradition of writing by utilizing Hindu Buddhist religious literature. Java is Sufi Islam, namely Islam which is easily accepted and absorbed into Javanese syncreticism. And of course To me, the Sufi Islam that Peacpck meant was none other than Islam spread by walisogo figures. Islam is the source and values ​​of shari'a law. Prior to Hinduism and Buddhism, prehistoric Javanese society had embraced beliefs that matched animism and dynamism. People's view of life is directed towards the formation of a numinous unity between the real world, society and the supernatural realm which is considered sacred. Hindu-Buddhist influences in Javanese society are expansive. alone had an effect on the religious system. Scholars who understood Sanskrit were finally able to process Hindu-Buddhist letters to write Javanese.

Friendship: Perspectives From Two Modern Plays

From ancient times until the nineteenth century, loyalty, trust, understanding, forbearance, and empathy were only some of the merits one expected to find as the foundation of true friendship in Western culture. For instance, Aristotle insists that friendship must be “reciprocal” and “must involve a wish for the good of the loved one as an end in itself”. Any friendship based on personal gains, whether tangible or not, would have been dismissed as false friendship. The transition from the relatively simple life of Aristotle’s time and the following centuries to the complex modern age has produced a dramatic change in the Western culture, a change that evidently encompassed the concept of friendship. Whereas the Industrial Revolution initiated a gradual change, shifting the world’s economy from an agricultural to an industrial one, the transition from friendships of ‘excellence’ to friendships of ‘utility’ and ‘pleasure’ was rather more accelerated, in the sense that what was viewed as superficial relationships became, over a short period of time, dominant in modern Western culture and recognized as manifestations of friendship. This study explores this cultural change as depicted in two modern dramas— The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov and A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen.

"The simple life experiences that every other human gets": Desire for normalcy among adolescents and young adults with advanced cancer.

Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with advanced cancer identify normalcy as an important component of quality end-of-life care. We sought to define domains of normalcy and identify ways in which clinicians facilitate or hinder normalcy during advanced cancer care. This was a secondary analysis of a qualitative study that aimed to identify priority domains for end-of-life care. Content analysis of semi-structured interviews among AYAs aged 12-39 years with advanced cancer, caregivers, and clinicians was used to evaluate transcripts. Coded excerpts were reviewed to identify themes related to normalcy. Participants included 23 AYAs with advanced cancer, 28 caregivers, and 29 clinicians. Participants identified five domains of normalcy including relationships, activities, career/school, milestones, and appearance. AYAs and caregivers identified that clinicians facilitate normalcy through exploration of these domains with AYAs, allowing flexibility in care plans, identification of short-term and long-term goals across normalcy domains, and recognizing losses of normalcy that occur during cancer care. AYAs with cancer experience multiple threats to normalcy during advanced cancer care. Clinicians can attend to normalcy and improve AYA quality of life by acknowledging these losses through ongoing discussions on how best to support domains of normalcy and by reinforcing AYA identities beyond a cancer diagnosis.

Materyalizme Karşı Gönüllü Sadelik: Hayat Tarzı İşyeri Sapma Davranışlarını Etkiler mi?

Workplace deviation literature has mainly focused on the effects of organizational practices on workplace deviation behaviors. It has been ignored that the individual characteristics of the employees can also cause workplace deviation. This research aims to determine the effect of employees' lifestyles on deviant behavior in the workplace. Materialism and voluntary simplicity were discussed as lifestyles in the research. The research was designed as cross-sectional quantitative research. Research data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of materialism, voluntary simplicity, and workplace deviant behavior scales. Research data were obtained from 387 professionals working in the service sector. Hypotheses are tested using regression analysis. According to the research findings, while materialism affects workplace deviance positively, voluntary simplicity affects negatively. These results show that managers should also take into account the lifestyle of employees while making decisions to prevent workplace deviant behavior.

Simplifying Life During the Covid-19 Pandemic

This article aims to present selected aspects of everyday life of people who define themselves as followers of simplifying life in view of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland. The article comprises three parts. The first, in a synthetic form, gives an outline of the idea of a simple life, its main beliefs and manifestations, whereas the second describes the degree and types of changes in the organisation of everyday life of simplifiers at the given time. The third part investigates whether the pandemic-triggered experiences have the potential to modify current consumption attitudes. This point is a reference to voices appearing in the public debate signalling – especially in the initial phase – such a possibility on a wider social scale. The research material was blog entries, fragments of podcasts on the simple life, and other sources (reports, scientific and journalistic texts).

The meaning of maintaining a life philosophy of simplicity for life pleasure: A study in Kampung Naga, Tasikmalaya

ABSTRACT The concept of simple living in Kampung Naga village in Tasikmalaya is interesting to study, because it shows the quality of social relations between humans and nature; and humans and humans. For the community, the concept of a simple life becomes an inseparable socio-cultural aspect in their lives, because it is based on a belief in the meaning of a better and more effective life. This study focused on the meaning of maintaining the philosophy of life and simplicity that could bring pleasure. This study was conducted in Kampung Naga village, Tasikmalaya, Indonesia. This study was qualitative research using interview, documentation and observation in collecting data. The results showed that meaningfulness in maintaining the philosophy of life of simplicity brings the pleasures of life for the community in Kampung Naga practically into mechanical solidarity based on the traditions, religion, and habits of the people in Kampung Naga. The simple life philosophy of the Kampung Naga community is a concept of life in achieving pleasure which later becomes a collective consciousness in the manifestation of socio-cultural citizenship in Indonesia. Simplicity in Kampung Naga community is a social fact that shows the socio-cultural existence of citizenship in Indonesia in the simplicity of life both in livelihood, entertainment and food and clothing needs. Maintaining simplicity in achieving pleasure in Kampung Naga community is a meeting-point between moral values, religion and culture which later became a living reference for the community. This study contributes to the development of socio-cultural aspects in the study of Citizenship Education, so that they can strengthen the construction of a meaningful philosophy of life in terms of Educational and Cultural Research.

Statistical Inference in the Cumulative Exposure Lognormal Model with Hybrid Censoring

This research aims to analyze data coming from step stress life testing experiments where the stress level is incremented at a preset time to obtain failure data faster. To analyze step stress data, a model that extrapolates the information attained from the accelerated tests to normal conditions needs to be fit to the life test data. We used the Cumulative Exposure Model (CEM) to model simple step stress lognormal life test data where hybrid censoring is present and applied the maximum likelihood estimation method to find the point and interval estimates of the parameters. Bootstrap intervals (bootstrap-t intervals and percentile intervals) were also constructed. We then performed a simulation study to assess the proposed methods of estimation under different hybrid censoring schemes. The Bias and MSE of the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) along with the coverage probability and average lengths of the corresponding confidence intervals were investigated. Finally, an illustrative example has been used to demonstrate the application of the methods discussed in this paper.

Economic Empowerment of Women through Self-Help Groups in Afghanistan: An Exploration for Sustainable Development

Women’s economic empowerment has been identified as a crucial element in poverty elimination and boosting economic growth. This study aims to look at Afghanistan’s experience using the Self-Help Group linkage as a core development strategy aimed at empowering women economically. For this purpose, this study follows a qualitative research methodology. The data had been gathered from primary and secondary resources and had resulted in significant findings. The established groups in the urban context were very few and mostly concentrated on simple life skills. Moreover, participation in SHGs was directly linked with the socio-economic well-being of the families. Furthermore, wrong cultural practices, security issues, less financial support, and poor attendance of members had been identified as challenges they cope with. For a better operation of the Self-Help Group, the study suggests the recommendations; increasing social awareness, government support, laws, and regulation to support women, strategies to enhance women’s economic empowerment, and linkage of the groups to commercial banks. Afghanistan’s experience shows that the Self-Help groups can empower women, facilitate entrepreneurial activities, enhance confidence and trust, and provide technical skills and market access. Those are part of sustainable development goals and thus increase sustainable livelihood.

Carry-over effects and fitness trade-offs in marine life histories: The costs of complexity for adaptation.

Most marine organisms have complex life histories, where the individual stages of a life cycle are often morphologically and ecologically distinct. Nevertheless, life-history stages share a single genome and are linked phenotypically (by "carry-over effects"). These commonalities across the life history couple the evolutionary dynamics of different stages and provide an arena for evolutionary constraints. The degree to which genetic and phenotypic links among stages hamper adaptation in any one stage remains unclear and yet adaptation is essential if marine organisms will adapt to future climates. Here, we use an extension of Fisher's geometric model to explore how both carry-over effects and genetic links among life-history stages affect the emergence of pleiotropic trade-offs between fitness components of different stages. We subsequently explore the evolutionary trajectories of adaptation of each stage to its optimum using a simple model of stage-specific viability selection with nonoverlapping generations. We show that fitness trade-offs between stages are likely to be common and that such trade-offs naturally emerge through either divergent selection or mutation. We also find that evolutionary conflicts among stages should escalate during adaptation, but carry-over effects can ameliorate this conflict. Carry-over effects also tip the evolutionary balance in favor of better survival in earlier life-history stages at the expense of poorer survival in later stages. This effect arises in our discrete-generation framework and is, therefore, unrelated to age-related declines in the efficacy of selection that arise in models with overlapping generations. Our results imply a vast scope for conflicting selection between life-history stages, with pervasive evolutionary constraints emerging from initially modest selection differences between stages. Organisms with complex life histories should also be more constrained in their capacity to adapt to global change than those with simple life histories.
