A Dietary Intervention in Adults with Overweight or Obesity Leads to Weight Loss Irrespective of Macronutrient Composition.

Obesity is a critical public health issue, necessitating effective weight loss interventions. While various dietary regimens have been explored, individual responses to interventions often vary. This study involved a 3-month dietary intervention aiming at assessing the role of macronutrient composition and the potential role of genetic predisposition in weight loss among Greek adults. This randomized clinical trial followed the CONSORT principles, recruiting 202 participants overall; 94 received a hypocaloric, high-protein diet and 108 received a high-carbohydrate, hypocaloric diet. Genetic predispositions were assessed through 10 target variants known for their BMI associations. Participants' weight and BMI values were recorded at baseline and post-intervention (n = 202 at baseline, n = 84 post-intervention) and an imputation method was applied to account for the observed missing values. Participants experienced a statistically significant weight loss across all dietary regimens (p < 0.001). Genetic analyses did not display statistically significant effects on weight loss. No significant differences in weight loss were observed between macronutrient groups, aligning with the POUNDS Lost and DIETFITS studies. This study underscores the importance of dietary interventions for weight loss and the potential contributions of genetic makeup. These findings contribute to obesity management within the Greek population and support the need for further research in personalized interventions.

Are weight loss and metabolic outcomes of bariatric surgery influenced by candidate glucocorticoid receptor gene polymorphisms? A prospective study

ABSTRACT Background Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for severe obesity. There can be variation in the degree of weight reduction following bariatric surgery. It is unknown whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the glucocorticoid receptor locus (GRL) affect postoperative weight loss and metabolic outcomes. Materials/methods We studied the association between selected candidate SNPs and postoperative weight loss and metabolic outcomes in patients with severe obesity undergoing bariatric surgery. The polymorphisms rs41423247 (Bcl1), rs56149945 (N363S) and rs6189/rs6190 (ER22/23EK) were analysed. Results The 139 participants included 95 women (68.3%) and had a median (interquartile range) age of 53.0 (46.0–60.0) years and mean (SD) weight of 140.8 (28.8) kg and body mass index of 50.3 (8.6) kg/m2. At baseline, 59 patients had type 2 diabetes (T2D), 60 had hypertension and 35 had obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). 84 patients (60.4%) underwent gastric bypass and 55 (39.6%) underwent sleeve gastrectomy. There were no significant differences in weight loss, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) or lipid profile categorized by genotype status, sex or median age. There was significant weight reduction after bariatric surgery with a postoperative BMI of 34.1 (6.8) kg/m2 at 24 months (p < 0.001). Conclusion While GRL polymorphisms with a known deleterious effect on adipose tissue mass and function may have a small, additive effect on the prevalence of obesity and related metabolic disorders in the population, we suggest that the relatively weak biological influence of these SNPs is readily overcome by bariatric surgery.

No Differences in Kidney Function Decline Between People With Type 2 Diabetes Starting a Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitor or a Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist: A Real-world Retrospective Comparative Observational Study

Diabetic nephropathy represents the leading cause of end-stage kidney disease in developed countries. Cardiovascular outcome trials have found that in participants who received a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP1RA) and a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i), the risk of incidence and progression of diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus was reduced. The aim of this study was to compare the decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) among people taking a GLP1RA with that among people taking an SGLT2i in a real-world setting. Data for 478 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who initiated therapy with a GLP1RA (n = 254) or an SGLT2i (n = 224) between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2021 were extracted. The primary outcome was any reduction ≥30% in eGFR after the start of therapy. Weight loss and drug discontinuation were also assessed. Over a median follow-up of 24 months, an eGFR reduction ≥30% occurred in 34 of 254 patients (13.4%) starting a GLP1RA and in 26 of 223 patients (11.6%) starting an SGLT2i (hazard ratio = 0.89; 95% CI, 0.54-1.49; P = 0.67). Median eGFR change over the whole follow-up was similar between groups (SGLT2i: median, -2 mL/min/1.73 m2; 25th, 75th percentile, -13, 8 mL/min/1.73 m2; GLP1RA: median, 0 mL/min/1.73 m2; 25th, 75th percentile, -10, 7 mL/min/1.73 m2; P = 0.54). No worsening of kidney function was observed, even when considering the ratio eGFR mean. The value of eGFR at baseline indicated a statistically significant indirect correlation with the observed absolute value of eGFR change over the follow-up (ρ = -0.36; P < 0.001). The difference in eGFR changes over time observed by eGFR categories was statistically significant (P = 0.0001) in both treatment groups. No significant differences in weight loss and drug discontinuations were observed between groups. Although acting on different molecular mechanisms, both GLP1RA and SGLT2i might have similar effects on eGFR decline in diabetes, as suggested by the results of the present study conducted in a real-world setting. Phase evolution of nanocrystalline Mn-based oxides screened under different calcination temperatures using different precursors for proficient application in near infrared pigmentation

We examined how different calcination temperatures and precursors affect the formation of Mn-based oxides. The formation of these oxides was influenced by both the temperature (400–––1000 °C) and the type of precursors used (MnCl2·4H2O, MnCO3, MnO2, and KMnO4). When MnCl2·4H2O was calcined at 800 and 1000 °C/3h, we obtained pure tetragonal Mn3O4 phase materials. Calcining MnCO3 at 600 and 1000 °C resulted in cubic Mn2O3 and tetragonal Mn3O4 phase materials, respectively. Heating commercial MnO2 powder at 600 and 800 °C transformed it into cubic Mn2O3 phase materials. At 400 °C, the tetragonal MnO2 phase remained, but at 1000 °C, mixed Mn3O4 and Mn2O3 phases formed. Calcining KMnO4 at 1000 °C/3h led to the formation of δ-MnO2 materials. The morphological features of Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 materials exhibited different sizes and shapes, including nanostone-like, nanorod-like, and nanoflakes morphologies. The thermal analysis revealed significant differences in weight loss and thermal events, including exo and endothermic peaks. The Raman spectra and UV–Vis DRS measurements data support the formation of Mn-based oxides. The highest NIR reflectance for the various synthesized materials of Mn3O4 phase indicates a reflectance of 68 % in the solar region and 91 % in the color pigment region.

Preparation of fine-grain aluminum alloy by spinning method and its corrosion resistance test

Due to the lack of shear resistance, the implanted materials in the aluminum alloy will lead to obvious wear. The emergence of fine-grained aluminum alloy materials can perfectly solve the above problems. Therefore, in this paper, the fine-grain aluminum alloy material is prepared by the spinning method, and the corrosion resistance test is carried out. The experimental results show that there is no significant difference in weight loss and surface morphology between aluminum alloy and fine-grain aluminum alloy immersed in normal saline and D-Hand’s solution for 30 days. The experimental results show that the fine-grained aluminum alloy has the basic conditions for in vivo implantation, which lays a foundation for the development of a new generation of in vivo implantation materials.

Gamitaeeumjowee-tang for Weight Loss in Post-Menopausal Obese Women: A Retrospective Chart Review

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate weight change and analyze adverse events in post-menopausal obese women with Gamitaeeumjowee-tang for weight loss.Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted for medical records of 115 post-menopausal obese women (body mass index, BMI≥25 kg/m2) who were administered with Gamitaeeumjowee-tang for 12 weeks for the purpose of weight loss. Weight, skeletal muscle ratio and BMI changes were compared before and after the program. Adverse events were evaluated by causality, severity and system-organ classes.Results: A total of 115 patients were included in this study. The average total weight loss in post-menopausal women was 5.72±2.04kg(p&lt;0.001) and the average weight loss rate was 8.06±2.70%(p&lt;0.001). After the 12-week program, the body fat rate was significantly decreased(3.76±2.20%)(p&lt;0.001) and the skeletal muscle ratio was significantly increased(2.07±1.24%)(p&lt;0.001). There were no significant differences in weight loss, skeletal muscle ratio change and body fat rate change depending on the number of hospital visits. Insomnia was frequently reported throughout the period, and no serious adverse events were reported.Conclusions: This study showed the potential that weight management treatment with Gamitaeeumjowee-tang could be a good way to lose weight of post-menopausal obese women without serious adverse events. Continuous well designed clinical studies are needed.

Fungal enzyme degradation of lignin-PLA composites: Insights from experiments and molecular docking simulations

Fungal enzymes are effective in degrading various polymeric materials. In this study, we assessed the initial degradation of composites consisting of lignin-poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with both unmodified lignin (LIG) and oxypropylated lignin (oLIG) incorporated at 10 % and 40 % weight within the PLA matrix in a fungal environment. Trametes versicolor fungi were used, and the samples were treated only for eight weeks. Although there was no significant difference in weight loss, the degradation process impacted the chemical and thermal properties of the composites, as shown by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses. After the degradation process, the carbonyl index values decreased for all composites and the hydroxyl index values increased for LIG/PLA and a reverse trend was observed for oLIG/PLA composites. The first heating scan from DSC results showed that the melting peak and the cold crystallization peak disappeared after the degradation process. Microscopic analysis revealed that LIG/PLA exhibited higher roughness than oLIG/PLA. Molecular docking simulations were carried out using guaiacylglycerol-β-guaiacyl ether (GGE) and lactic acid (LA) as model compounds for lignin and PLA, respectively, with laccase (Lac) enzyme for Trametes versicolor. The docking results showed that GGE had the strongest binding interaction and affinity with Lac than lactic acid and oxypropylated GGE. The oxypropylated GGE formed a shorter hydrogen bonding with the Lac enzyme than GGE and LA. The trend associated with the degradation of composites from experimental and molecular docking findings was consistent. This combined approach provided insights into the degradation process using fungi and had the potential to be applied to different polymeric composites.

COVID-19 Lockdown and Impact on 2-Year Weight Loss in a Bariatric Center

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a worldwide lockdown, which affected physical exercise habits, as well as having a detrimental effect on psychological health and follow-up visits of patients submitted to bariatric surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on the 2-year weight loss of patients submitted to bariatric surgery in our center. Methods: This was an observational study comparing the weight loss of patients who underwent bariatric surgery from January to March 2020 with a control group submitted to surgery between January and March 2017. Percentage of total weight loss (% TWL) and excess weight loss (% EWL) were assessed 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery. Results: A total number of 203 patients were included in this study, 102 had bariatric surgery during the selected period in 2020 and 101 underwent surgery during the same period in 2017. There was no statistically significant difference in weight loss between the 2017 and 2020 groups which was reported as % TWL (mean 27.08 ± 7.530 vs. 28.03 ± 7.074, 33.87 ± 8.507 vs. 34.07 ± 8.979 and 34.13 ± 9.340 vs. 33.98 ± 9.993; p = 0.371) and % EWL (mean 66.83 ± 23.004 vs. 69.71 ± 17.021, 83.37 ± 24.059 vs. 84.51 ± 21.640 and 83.47 ± 24.130 vs. 84.27 ± 23.651; p = 0.506) at 6, 12, and 24 months post-surgery. Conclusion: Despite social limitations imposed by the COVID-19 lockdown, we found no significant difference between weight loss at 2 years postoperatively in the 2020 group when compared with a control group who underwent bariatric surgery in 2017. These results show that the outcomes of bariatric surgery during the COVID-19 lockdown were comparable with those recorded before the pandemic, supporting the efficacy of bariatric procedures’ metabolic effects during the first 2 years after surgery, regardless of lifestyle habits.

Durability of heat-treated Paulownia tomentosa and Pinus koraiensis woods in palm oil and air against brown- and white-rot fungi

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of oil- and air-heat treatments on the durability of Paulownia tomentosa and Pinus koraiensis woods against Fomitopsis palustris and Trametes versicolor. The wood samples were treated in palm oil and air at 180, 200, and 220 °C for 2 h. The weight loss, morphology, crystalline properties, and chemical compounds of untreated and heat-treated wood after fungal attack were investigated. The significant difference in weight loss between oil- and air-heat-treated samples was shown at 220 °C. Heat-treated wood exposed to white-rot fungus showed a lower weight loss than that exposed to brown-rot fungus. The cell components in the untreated- and heat-treated Paulownia tomentosa and Pinus koraiensis at 180 °C were severely damaged due to fungal exposure compared to those at 220 °C. A fungal effect on the relative crystallinity was observed in heat-treated wood at 180 °C, whereas the effect was not observed at 220 °C. Following brown-rot fungus exposure, untreated- and heat-treated wood at 180 °C showed a notable change in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) peaks of polysaccharides, whereas no noticeable change in lignin peaks was observed. Heat-treated wood at 220 °C showed no noticeable change in the FTIR spectra owing to brown-rot fungus exposure. Exposure to white-rot fungus did not noticeably change the FTIR spectra of untreated and heat-treated wood.

Comparison of three different anastomotic methods of sleeve gastrectomy with transit bipartition using an obese rodent model

The long-term effects and safety of single-anastomosis sleeve ileal (SASI) bypass have not been confirmed. The one anastomosis procedure carries the risk of bile reflux, and Braun anastomosis has the capacity to reduce bile reflux. This study was designed to compare the influences of bile reflux and histological changes in the esogastric sections of rats. Obese Sprague–Dawley rats underwent sleeve gastrectomy with transit bipartition (RYTB) (n = 12), SASI (n = 12), SASI bypass with Braun anastomosis (BTB) (n = 12), esojejunostomy (EJ) (n = 12), and SHAM (n = 8) surgery. During the 12-week follow-up period, weight changes, glucose improvement, and changes in serum nutrition were evaluated. Histological expression and bile acid concentration in the rats in all groups were also evaluated. No significant differences in weight loss and glucose improvements were observed in the RYTB, SASI, and BTB groups. The RYTB and BTB groups had significantly lower bile acid concentration and albumin levels than the SASI group. In addition, mucosal height in the RYTB and BTB groups was significantly lower than in the SASI group. Braun anastomosis had a significant effect on anti-reflux. BTB may be a superior primary procedure due to its potential for parallel bariatric and metabolic improvements, effective anti-reflux effects, simplified operations, and avoidance of severe malnutrition. Further clinical studies are needed to confirm these findings.

BS O04 Can virtual reality exercise games improve compliance with preoperative prescriptive exercise programs in patients awaiting bariatric surgery?

Abstract Background Despite the recognised benefits of increased activity prior to any surgery, non-compliance rate with prescribed exercise regimens is perceived to be higher amongst patients with obesity. Virtual-reality is becoming more recognised as an adjunctive tool within the healthcare setting. In this setting the platform enables exercise games to be played and enjoyed in the comfort of the patient’s own home, either sitting or standing depending on physical disability. The study aims to identify whether VR exercise games could be considered part of the pre-operative exercise program in patients awaiting bariatric surgery and the effects of this technology on compliance. Methods A pilot study using block randomisation, patients with obesity planned for laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) or sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) between December 2020 and December 2023 were recruited to a 6-week pre-operative regular exercise (REG) programme of either regular walking activity (RWA) or exercise using Virtual Reality device (VRX). Patients who later decided not to follow the exercise protocol were included as control (NEG). Patients with epilepsy, uncontrolled arrhythmias, heart failure or those unable to use VR systems were excluded. Pre- and post-trial demographic and progress data and follow up survey using the New Zealand Physical Activity Questionnaire were collected. Results 43 patients were recruited, 46.4kg/m2 mean referral BMI (33.8 – 65.6, SD 6.4) and 84% female. Exercise non-compliance was comparable between RWA and VRX groups (40 vs 43% respectively). 56% of NEG had their operation during short day light season (44% of REG). NEG group reported higher rate of chronic pain, poor motivation, and higher incidents of changes to surgery date (33, 33 and 22% respectively vs. none in REG). While weight loss achieved in REG prior to the operation was higher than in NEG, there was no significant difference in weight loss between the groups at 3 months follow up. Conclusions While the role of prehabilitation exercise prior to major elective surgery is well documented, the search for the ideal approach to achieve this is still ongoing. This pilot study demonstrates the limitations certain chronic conditions in patients with obesity have on the success of a pre-operative exercise programme. While more data is needed, it is important to bear these limitations in mind when recruiting patients to any exercise programme. The compliance rate remains unfavourable despite the use of VR technology.

Semaglutide 2.4 mg/wk for weight loss in patients with severe obesity and with or without a history of bariatric surgery.

This retrospective cohort study aimed to assess the effectiveness of semaglutide 2.4 mg in patients with severe obesity (BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2 ) who had previously undergone bariatric surgery (BS) but failed to achieve satisfactory weight loss or experienced weight regain compared with patients without a history of BS with similar BMI. The authors analyzed data from 129 patients with a BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2 , including 39 with (BS+) and 90 without (BS-) a history of BS. The patients received semaglutide treatment for 24 weeks starting at 0.25 mg/wk and gradually increasing to reach a final dose of 2.4 mg/wk. The treatment outcomes were assessed based on the percentage of weight loss, changes in BMI, and waist circumference. Semaglutide treatment resulted in significant 9.1% weight loss in the BS+ group, with no significant difference in weight loss between the BS+ and BS- groups. This study is the first, to the authors' knowledge, to compare the effectiveness of semaglutide treatment in patients with versus those without a history of BS, providing valuable evidence of its efficacy. By focusing on individuals with severe obesity (BMI > 40 kg/m2 and associated comorbidities), it fills a gap in the current literature and highlights the potential of semaglutide 2.4 mg as a treatment option for this specific population.

A comparison of virtual and in person delivery of a full meal replacement program for obesity.

Full meal replacement (FMR) Intensive Lifestyle Interventions (ILI) have been used for weight management. However, predictors of efficacy with these programs are less clear. The primary objective was to assess weight loss predictors in a community-based FMR ILI program. A secondary objective was to determine if weight loss was different between virtual and in person ILI. This was a retrospective cohort study involving 234 patients who started the program between 1 January 2016 and 3 March 2021. In the 24-week program, patients spent 12weeks on FMR and then transitioned back to food for the remainder, with weekly follow up with a physician and group sessions with a dietitian. Visits were in person prior to March 2020 and virtual afterward. Patients' average age was 47.5years (SD=12.0) and 73.5% were female. Average weight loss was 14.3% (SD=6.2%). There was no significant difference in weight loss between virtual and in person programs. Patients on a Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist prior lost less weight. Other significant associations between groups were baseline Hemoglobin A1C, classes attended, as well as the age since peak weight. Weight loss from virtual ILI was not significantly different from person ILI. More research is needed to determine how to best stratify care as virtual or in person using FMR programs.

Impact of EASO/ESPEN-Defined Sarcopenic Obesity Following a Technology-Based Weight Loss Intervention.

Sarcopenic Obesity is the co-existence of increased adipose tissue (obesity) and decreased muscle mass or strength (sarcopenia) and is associated with worse outcomes than obesity alone. The new EASO/ESPEN consensus provides a framework to standardize its definition. This study sought to evaluate whether there are preliminary differences observed in weight loss or physical function in older adults with and without sarcopenic obesity taking part in a multicomponent weight loss intervention using these new definitions. A 6-month, non-randomized, non-blinded, single-arm pilot study was conducted from 2018 to 2020 in adults ≥ 65years with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30kg/m2. Weekly dietitian visits and twice-weekly physical therapist-led exercise classes were delivered using telemedicine. We conducted a secondary retrospective analysis of the parent study (n = 53 enrolled, n = 44 completers) that investigated the feasibility of a technology-based weight management intervention in rural older adults with obesity. Herein, we applied five definitions of sarcopenic obesity (outlined in the consensus) to ascertain whether the response to the intervention differed among those with and without sarcopenic obesity. Primary outcomes evaluated included weight loss and physical function (30-s sit-to-stand). In the parent study, mean weight loss was - 4.6kg (95% CI - 3.6, - 5.6; p < 0.001). Physical function measures of 30-s sit-to-stand showed a mean increase of 3.1 in sit-to-stand repetitions (+ 1.9, + 4.3; p < 0.001). In this current analysis, there was a significant decrease in weight and an increase in repetitions between baseline and follow-up within each group of individuals with and without sarcopenia for each of the proposed definitions. However, we did not observe any significant differences in the changes between groups from baseline to follow-up. The potential lack of significant differences in weight loss or physical function between older adults with and without sarcopenic obesity participating in a weight loss intervention may suggest that well-designed, multicomponent interventions can lead to similar outcomes irrespective of sarcopenia status in persons with obesity. Fully powered randomized clinical trials are critically needed to confirm these preliminary results.

Gelatin and Gelatin/Rice Starch Coatings Affect Differently Fresh-Cut Potatoes and Colocasia Slices

Traditional food packaging materials maintain food quality and safety during storage, but they cause significant environmental pollution. For this reason, there has been an increased demand in designing packaging materials from biodegradable ingredients such as edible proteins and polysaccharides. In the current study, biodegradable coatings from gelatin (Gel) or gelatin–rice starch (Gel-RS) mixtures were applied to fresh-cut Colocasia (Colocasia esculenta) and potato (Solanum tuberosum) samples, and main quality properties such as weight loss, firmness, breaking force, and color were evaluated during storage for seven days at 5 °C. Gel-coated potato samples kept moisture at higher levels compared to untreated samples or Gel-RS-coated samples (weight loss 41.40 ± 3.33%), while no differences in weight loss were observed for all fresh-cut Colocasia samples. Furthermore, the gelatin–rice starch coating increased the breaking force (1181.40 ± 159.73) and hardness (1609.6 ± 76.79) of fresh-cut potato samples during storage conditions. On the other hand, fresh-cut Colocasia coated with gelatin and gelatin/rice starch showed no significant differences in weight loss and texture characteristics. In conclusion, gelatin and gelatin/rice starch coatings provoke preservation of quality characteristics during storage of fresh-cut potatoes but have no preservation effects on fresh-cut Colocasia. This research enriches the knowledge of the effects of biodegradable coatings on fresh-cut starchy tubers.

Impact of Pregnancy on Weight Loss After Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty

PurposeObesity and pregnancy are strictly related: on the one hand, obesity—one of the most common comorbidities in women of reproductive age—contributes to infertility and obesity-related pregnancy complications, whereas pregnancy is a condition in which, physiologically, the pregnant woman undergoes weight gain. Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) may be used for the treatment of obesity in women of childbearing age.Materials and MethodsA retrospective analysis was conducted to evaluate weight trajectories, the evolution of obesity-related comorbidities, and lifestyle modification in women who became pregnant after ESG. A comparison was made between childbearing-age women who became pregnant after ESG and non-pregnant women.ResultsA total of 150 childbearing-age women underwent ESG at a large tertiary medical center. Of these, 11 patients (33.4 ± 6.2 years) became pregnant after the procedure, following a mean time interval of 5.5 ± 3.9 months. Three women (two affected by polycystic ovary syndrome) reported difficulty getting pregnant before undergoing ESG. The mean preconception BMI was 31.9±4.0 kg/m2 (−7.24 ± 4.0 kg/m2 after ESG). Total body weight loss (TBWL, %) was 18.08 ± 8.00, 11.00 ± 11.08, and 12.08 ± 8.49, at the beginning of pregnancy, at the delivery, and at the first follow-up (19.6 ± 7.8 months after ESG). TBWL of at least 5% was achieved before pregnancy in all patients (73% reached a TBWL ≥ 10%).No significant differences in weight loss and QoL were found between the pregnancy and non-pregnancy groups up to 24 months after ESG.ConclusionsEndoscopic sleeve gastroplasty allows for adequate weight loss before and after pregnancy in patients with obesity.Graphical

This research work aimed to investigate the effects of different concentrations of Aloe vera gel (50%, 75%, and 100%) and honey (25%, 50%, and 100%) on the physicochemical changes in fresh-cut pineapple stored at 4 °C. The pineapple pieces were prepared by washing and cutting them into 2 cm sections, followed by coating them with the Aloe vera and honey solutions for 2 min. Subsequently, the samples were stored at 4 °C for duration of 12 days. During the storage period, various parameters such as juice leakage, firmness, pH, total soluble solids, vitamin C content, colour, and microbial load were monitored. Additionally, sensory testing was conducted to evaluate the acceptability of the treated samples. The findings revealed significant differences in weight loss, vitamin C content, colour, flavor, and textural properties between the treated samples and the control group throughout the entire 12-day storage period. Among the different treatments, the application of 100% Aloe vera gel exhibited the highest effectiveness in preventing physicochemical changes and extending the shelf life of fresh-cut pineapple where as honey shows the opposite. Notably, the sample coated with 100% Aloe vera showed the highest vitamin C content (27.35 mg/100 g) at the end of the storage period where as 100% honey shows the second position. Based on the results, this study concludes that Aloe vera gel can be utilized as an efficient coating material to mitigate physicochemical and microbial changes in fresh-cut pineapple during refrigerated storage. The findings highlight the potential of Aloe vera gel is more effective then honey in every ways in preserving the quality and extending the shelf life of fresh-cut fruits, providing opportunities for practical applications in the food industry.

Associations of obesity phenotypes with weight change, cardiometabolic benefits, and type 2 diabetes incidence during a lifestyle intervention: results from the PREVIEW study.

Some individuals with overweight/obesity may be relatively metabolically healthy (MHO) and have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease than those with metabolically unhealthy overweight/obesity (MUO). We aimed to compare changes in body weight and cardiometabolic risk factors and type 2 diabetes incidence during a lifestyle intervention between individuals with MHO vs MUO. This post-hoc analysis included 1012 participants with MHO and 1153 participants with MUO at baseline in the randomized trial PREVIEW. Participants underwent an eight-week low-energy diet phase followed by a 148-week lifestyle-based weight-maintenance intervention. Adjusted linear mixed models and Cox proportional hazards regression models were used. There were no statistically significant differences in weight loss (%) between participants with MHO vs MUO over 156 weeks. At the end of the study, weight loss was 2.7% (95% CI, 1.7%-3.6%) in participants with MHO and 3.0% (2.1%-4.0%) in those with MUO. After the low-energy diet phase, participants with MHO had smaller decreases in triglyceride (mean difference between MHO vs MUO 0.08 mmol·L-1 [95% CI, 0.04-0.12]; P < 0.001) but similar reductions in fasting glucose and HOMA-IR than those with MUO. However, at the end of weight maintenance, those with MHO had greater reductions in triglyceride (mean difference -0.08 mmol·L-1 [-0.12--0.04]; P < 0.001), fasting glucose, 2-hour glucose (difference -0.28 mmol·L-1 [-0.41--0.16]; P < 0.001), and HOMA-IR than those with MUO. Participants with MHO had smaller decreases in diastolic blood pressure and HbA1c and greater decreases in HDL cholesterol after weight loss than those with MUO, whereas the statistically significant differences disappeared at the end of weight maintenance. Participants with MHO had lower 3-year type 2 diabetes incidence than those with MUO (adjusted hazard ratio 0.37 [0.20-0.66]; P < 0.001). Individuals with MUO had greater improvements in some cardiometabolic risk factors during the low-energy diet phase, but had smaller improvements during long-term lifestyle intervention than those with MHO.

Impact of a Mindfulness Mobile Application on Weight Loss and Eating Behavior in People with Metabolic Syndrome: a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

BackgroundWeight-loss approaches involving mindfulness have been reported to reduce overeating behavior. We conducted a preliminary evaluation of the feasibility and effectiveness of a mindfulness mobile application (MMA) combined with a comprehensive lifestyle intervention (CLI) focused on weight loss and eating behaviors for people with metabolic syndrome based on post-intervention follow-up data.MethodParticipants were randomly assigned (1:1) to a CLI group or a CLI + MMA group. Participants received weekly CLI for 13 weeks, followed by telephone counseling for 13 weeks. The CLI + MMA group also had access to the MMA. Feasibility was assessed by the number of people who refused to participate, rate of adherence to the MMA, follow-up rate, and participant satisfaction. The preliminary endpoint was weight change (at 26 weeks). Participants completed the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ). A mixed linear model was used for efficacy analysis.ResultsEight of the 40 participants declined to participate. The MMA was used 4.4 ± 1.7 days per week, but the rate of adherence declined over time. The follow-up rate was 100%, and there was no difference in participant satisfaction between the groups. There was no significant group-by-time interaction for weight loss (p = 0.924), but there was a significant interaction for the DEBQ restrained eating score (p = 0.033).ConclusionsThis study found that CLI plus MMA was highly feasible and moderately acceptable. There were no significant differences in weight loss between the groups, but the CLI + MMA group showed an increase in restrained eating. A Study on Weight Loss Cause as per the Side Effect of Liraglutide.

Liraglutide is known to have much lower weight loss effects in real clinical fields than in randomized clinical trials because of its side effects (SE) and discomfort associated with injections. This study is aimed at determining whether the side effects of liraglutide affect weight reduction and its maintenance in real-world practice. Endocrinologists conducted a retrospective chart review of data from two tertiary university hospitals. All patients who had been prescribed liraglutide at least once between January 2014 and December 2019 were included. For an average of 3 and 6 months, weight changes due to the presence or absence of SE and discontinuation (MAIN or STOP) of liraglutide were checked. Only 40.8% (64/157) of the patients remained on liraglutide for 6 months; 14.7% (23/157) maintained the drug despite SEs (MAIN_SE(+)), and 40.1% (63/157) discontinued the drug despite not having SEs (STOP_SE(-)). At 3 months, there was -5.9 ± 0.6%, -7.9 ± 0.9%, -4.5 ± 0.5%, and -3.4 ± 0.6% weight reduction in the MAIN_SE(-), MAIN_SE(+), STOP_SE(-), and STOP_SE(+) groups, respectively (all p < 0.001 compared to the baseline). However, there were no significant differences in the weight loss between the MAIN (p = 0.062) and STOP (p = 0.204) groups. At 6 months, the weight reduction was -2.0 ± 0.5% (p < 0.001) in MAIN_SE(-), -2.2 ± 0.7% (p < 0.005) in MAIN_SE(+), -1.7 ± 0.7% (p < 0.01) in STOP_SE(-), and -2.0 ± 0.6% (p = 0.01) in STOP_SE(+), compared to baseline. SEs also caused no significant differences in weight loss between the MAIN (p = 0.787) and STOP (p = 0.694) groups. Our study confirmed that the side effects of liraglutide did not affect weight reduction. Moreover, in the real world, the continuous rate of liraglutide use is not high, and the weight gradually increases after 3 months. Therefore, in addition to the side effects of liraglutide, the medical staff should consider various factors that affect drug adherence, consider ways to increase compliance, and continue to ensure management so that patients can maintain their weight.
