A Novel Effort Estimation Approach for Migration of SOA Applications to Microservices

Microservices architecture's popularity is rapidly growing as it eases the design of enterprise applications by allowing independent development and deployment of services. Due to this paradigm shift in software development, many existing Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) applications are being migrated to microservices. Estimating the effort required for migration is a key challenge as it helps the architects in better planning and execution of the migration process. Since the designing style and deployment environments are different for each service, existing effort estimation models in the literature are not ideal for microservice architecture. To estimate the effort required for migrating SOA application to microservices, we propose a new effort estimation model called Service Points. We define a formal model called service graph which represents the components of the service based architectures and their interactions among the services. Service graph provides the information required for the estimation process. We recast the use case points method and model it to become suitable for microservices architecture. We have updated the technical and environmental factors used for the effort estimation. The proposed approach is demonstrated by estimating the migration effort for a standard SOA based web application. The proposed model is compatible with the design principles of microservices and provides a systematic and formal way of estimating the effort. It helps software architects in better planning and execution of the migration process.

Robustness Estimation and Optimisation for Semantic Web Service Composition With Stochastic Service Failures

Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is a widely adopted software engineering paradigm that encourages modular and reusable applications. One popular application of SOA is web service composition, which aims to loosely couple web services to accommodate complex goals not achievable through any individual web service. Many approaches have been proposed to construct composite services with optimized Quality of Service (QoS), assuming that QoS of web services never changes. However, the constructed composite services may not perform well and may not be executable later due to its component services' failure. Therefore, it is important to build composite services that are robust to stochastic service failures. Two challenges of building robust composite services are to efficiently generate service composition with near-optimal quality in a large search space of available services and to accurately measure the robustness of composite services considering all possible failure scenarios. This article proposes a novel two-stage GA-based approach to robust web service composition with an adaptive evolutionary control and an efficient robustness measurement. This approach can generate robust composite service at the design phase, which can cope with stochastic service failures and maintain high quality at the time of execution. We have conducted experiments with benchmark datasets to evaluate the performance of our proposed approach. Our experiments show that our method can produce highly robust composite services, achieving outstanding performance consistently in the event of stochastic service failures, on service repositories with varying sizes.

Patterns for Migration of SOA Based Applications to Microservices Architecture

Service oriented architecture (SOA) has been widely used in the design of enterprise applications over the last two decades. Though SOA has become popular in the integration of multiple applications using the enterprise service bus, there are few challenges related to delivery, deployment, governance, and interoperability of services. To overcome the design and maintenance challenges in SOA, a new architecture of microservices has emerged with loose coupling, independent deployment, and scalability as its key features. With the advent of microservices, software architects have started to migrate legacy systems to microservice architecture. However, many challenges arise during the migration of SOA to microservices, including the decomposition of SOA to microservice, the testing of microservices designed using different programming languages, and the monitoring the microservices. In this paper, we aim to provide patterns for the most recurring problems highlighted in the literature i.e, the decomposition of SOA services, the size of each microservice, and the detection of anomalies in microservices. The suggested patterns are combined with our experience in the migration of SOA-based applications to the microservices architecture, and we have also used these patterns in the migration of other SOA applications. We evaluated these patterns with the help of a standard web-based application.

Design of Management Information System for Employee Performance Appraisal Using Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Method

Information Technology and Information Systems are able to assist the performance appraisal process and assist decision-making by the management of an organization. Bank BTN Bogor Branch Office itself has carried out the performance appraisal process for employees every quarter, semester and annually every year. The performance appraisal process uses the key performance indicator method using several indicators, where the assessment is carried out by superiors to subordinates after a performance target has been set by the Central Bank BTN Office. The performance appraisal process takes quite a long time because the accountant has to collect every performance appraisal result from each work unit. In addition, the ongoing system has another weakness, namely that it cannot be monitored via the dashboard in real time by the Management division which aims to assist in decision making in finding top talent. This study designed a Management Information System for employee performance appraisal at Bank BTN Bogor Branch Office which is designed for 2 levels of management, namely middle level management and bottom level management. The design of this SIM includes 3 stages, namely the data collection method, the Rapid Application Development (RAD) system development method and the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) method. The application of SOA is used so that communication between systems can run smoothly without being hindered by different platforms. The results of the SIM design in the form of a mockup that functions as an assessment system and monitoring media for employee performance with several features in it both mobile and website. Then there are several additional features in designing a mobile-based information system, namely employee performance which aims to see top talent candidate employees.

Service-oriented Data Mining Architecture for Climate-Smart Agriculture

The increasing volume of agricultural data and the availability of advanced technologies such as mobile platforms and connected devices have revolutionized the way data is captured, processed, stored and mined. The technologies have been applied in everyday life including agriculture, to enable creation of seamless systems that are intuitive and capable of providing real-time, affordable and accessible data to aid decision making. However, due to the inherent challenges of mobile platforms such as low-bandwidth networks, reduced storage space, limited battery power, slower processors and small screens to visualize the results, have hindered onboard data mining. Also, mobile devices have different platforms, which makes integration with server applications problematic. This paper, therefore, sought to solve these problems by proposing application of service-oriented architecture (SOA) based on web services, and artificial neural network (ANN) to facilitate mobile data mining of large agronomic and climate data, and prediction of yield and weather patterns. The architecture was proposed after a critical review of the available mobile data mining architecture. SOA was an ideal choice since it uses web services to improve inter-operability between clients and server applications independently from the different platforms they execute on hence providing data mining capabilities to mobile devices. The paper proposes a 7-layer architectural design premised on the concept advanced in the SO-M-Miner model. The components of the architecture included an SMS gateway, data client, mobile networks, web service, database and ODBC connector.

E2SM: a security tool for adaptive cloud‐based service‐oriented applications

The issue of security in the distributed system landscape of a service-oriented architecture (SOA) is a challenging one. No longer is it limited to a local application or an application domain, security must now work across a range of applications and business processes interacting with each other. This is even more true when SOA-based applications are provisioned in the cloud. Firstly, cloud applications components, and the data they might handle, that were once silos, are now being exposed as services by distinct and distrusted tenants. Secondly, such applications are often adaptive when they are provisioned in cloud environments. This study proposes an end-to-end security model (E2SM) that aims to protect data confidentiality in adaptive cloud-based SOA applications. E2SM allows the setting of data-centric security policies that go beyond services boundaries. First, security configuration is automatically calculated starting from a few intuitive business-oriented security settings. Then, the configuration is updated with minimal overhead if security policies are dynamically modified and/or SOA architecture is reconfigured. A security tool is implemented according to the proposed model. As for validation, the tool was used to secure a healthcare business process.

Predicting new composition relations between web services via link analysis

With the wide application of service-oriented architecture (SOA) and service-oriented computing (SOC), the past decade has witnessed a rapid growth of the number of web services on the internet. Against this background, combining different web services to create new applications has attracted great interest from developers. However, according to latest statistics, only a small number of popular services are frequently used by developers and the use rates of most web services are rather low. To help service users discover appropriate web services and promote service compositions has thus become a significant need. In the following paper, we propose a link-based approach to predict new composition relations between web services. The approach is based on exploration of known composition relations and similarity relations among web services. To measure the composition or similarity degrees, several link-based methods are exploited, and two reasonable heuristic rules for integrating the existing composition and similarity relations for service composition prediction are developed. Case studies and experiments based on real web service datasets validated the proposed approach.

Application of BOCR models in service oriented architecture (SOA): study on model validation through quantification for QoS considerations

In the competitive market place, most organizations are going through a digital transformation to enhance the customer experience and reduce the risk, therefore quality of service (QoS), specifically performance, is becoming center stage in building real world applications. In building real world applications, two challenges are fundamental: firstly, how we effectively build models for performance under uncertainty, and secondly, in what way we validate the models through quantification. Consequently, our study reveals a significant research that has been underway and continue to be happening on the first part on model development, however, a limited research is in progress on QoS quantification in SOA applications. Hence, we attempted to fill the gap. Therefore, in this paper, we propose benefits–opportunities–cost–risk (BOCR) models for quantification of various QoS influencing factors using analytic network process (ANP) and analytic hierarchy process (AHP). We introduce an efficient algorithm for the first time based on BOCR–AHP/ANP methodology that validates the performance of real-world SOA applications. Most importantly, here in this paper, considered expert judgements and historical data from the in-the-field and on-the-project expertise to validate SOA–QoS making our proposed unique from other traditional practices. A case study has been carried out to validate the proposed approach and presented the results.

Empirical Evaluation of Design Level Metrics for Aspect Oriented Business Process Execution Language in SOA

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) facilitates seamless application integration through standards-based predefined web services. During integration, Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) plays a vital role in composing existing Web Services thereby achieving a service based workflow model. Due to frequently changing business requirements, it becomes very much essential for an SOA application to have the capability to dynamically bind with an alternate service rather than statically fixing the services in a given composition. However, BPEL lacks support for the run-time inclusion of a new Web Service or functionality. Aspects overcome this limitation by providing support to independently encapsulate the cross-cutting functionalities by separating them from the core business logic. Using AOP, it is possible to achieve dynamic binding in web service composition. To illustrate the embedding of AOP constructs into a BPEL process, this paper implements a case study on distributed e-HealthCare system. Further, two core design level properties namely, cohesion and coupling have been measured and the impact of introduction of AO into a composed BPEL process has also been discussed. Empirical evaluation of the design level properties shows that cohesion improves by the introduction of AOP in BPEL.

Automated Testing of WS-BPEL Service Compositions: A Scenario-Oriented Approach

Nowadays, service oriented architecture (SOA) has become one mainstream paradigm for developing distributed applications. As the basic unit in SOA, web services can be composed to construct complex applications. The quality of web services and their compositions is critical to the success of SOA applications. Testing, as a major quality assurance technique, is confronted with new challenges in the context of service compositions. In this paper, we propose a scenario-oriented testing approach that can automatically generate test cases for service compositions. Our approach is particularly focused on the service compositions specified by Business Process Execution Language for web services (WS-BPEL), a widely recognized executable service composition language. In the approach, a WS-BPEL service composition is first abstracted into a graph model; test scenarios are then derived from the model; finally, test cases are generated according to different scenarios. We also developed a prototype tool implementing the proposed approach, and an empirical study was conducted to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of our approach. The experimental results show that the automatic scenario-oriented testing approach is effective in detecting many types of faults seeded in the service compositions.

Rich Device-Services (RDS): A Service-Oriented Approach to the Internet of Things (IoT)

The Internet of Things (IoT) should enable the seamless integration of devices to combine the data collected from the physical objects and yield new services. From the IoT perspective, every device can offer its functionality as one or more interoperable device-services. As the number of devices grows, and the number of interactions between their device-services is increased, achieving more scalable and dynamic integration of devices becomes a major challenge in IoT. An emerging approach to overcome this challenge is the application of service-oriented architecture. Over the last few years, Rich Services, which is a type of service-oriented architecture, has emerged as an excellent technique for facilitating integration of services in the large-scale systems. In this paper, inspired by the notion of Rich Services, we propose the Rich Device-Services approach to enable a scalable and dynamic integration of heterogeneous devices in IoT. The proposed approach exploits the Data Distribution Service middleware for publish-subscribe, data-centric, real-time, and loosely-coupled communication between device-services. We also present a sample of the proposed approach and analyze the performance of Rich Device-Services.

A critical review on effort estimation techniques for service-oriented-architecture-based applications

In the recent past, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) has become very popular as it allows legacy systems to remain mostly unchanged and provide functionalities in the form of services. In contrast to traditional software application development, complexity of SOA application is much higher, making the effort estimation very difficult. Hence, existing effort estimation techniques and approaches are inadequate to address the complex SOA systems. In this literature review, distinct research directions for SOA-specific effort estimation are critically examined with the help of proposed review framework with nine point agenda that include the class, structure, purview, objective, technique, value added, flip side, inference, limitations, and future research scope. In the planning phase of a software project, estimating the effort is very critical and crucial to manage the risk of cost blowout happened during the development. Not much research has been available on effort estimation for SOA applications. However, there are some good frameworks and methods provided by researchers that make a solid foundation of effort estimation for SOA applications. Available effort estimation techniques for SOA applications are analyzed by critically examining their upside and flip-side.

Characterization of the Application of Service-Oriented Design Principles in Practice: A Systematic Literature Review

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a paradigm to implement loosely-coupled, platform-independent distributed software systems using communicating services. Currently, SOA is well-recognized as an established architectural paradigm for distributed systems. Specific design principles for SOA have been recognized as fundamental for implementation in practice. In this article, a systematic literature review is performed to characterize SOA design principles regarding criteria including main domains of application, situations in which SOA is used, which basic design principles are used in practice, how research is evaluated, what benefits of using SOA design principles have been reported, and how SOA applications have been modeled. From 507 articles first selected, 67 were fully read, and 27 were considered of relevance for this research. Interesting results were found from this review. Most studies cited using at least one SOA design principle. Quality of SOA applications has been hardly mentioned. Few studies dealing with the effective application of design principles and how they affect quality are mentioned. SOA Design Principles are presented as key concepts in literature, but are not always shown in case studies as being explicitly applied in practice.

A process-mining-based scenarios generation method for SOA application development

Business process models which are usually constructed by business designers from experience and analysis are the main guidelines for services composition in the service-oriented architecture (SOA) applications development. However, due to the complexity of business models, it is a challenging task for business process designers to optimize the process models dynamically in accordance with changes in business environments. In this paper, a process-mining-based method is proposed to support business process designers to monitor efficiency or capture the changes of a business process. Firstly, we define a scenario model to depict business elements and their relationships which are critical to business process design. Based on the proposed scenario model, process mining algorithms, including control flow mining, roles mining and data flow mining are carried out in a certain sequence synthetically to extract business scenarios from event logs recorded by SOA application systems. Finally, we implement a prototype using a logistic scenario to illustrate the feasibility of our method in SOA applications development.

REVIEW ON STRUCTURAL PROPERTIES METRICS IN SOA DESIGN

The application of metrics for the purpose of measuring qualities of software has been widely practice within software engineering industry. Though in the beginning most measurement involves artifacts such as source code, quality measurement from the beginning of software lifecycle is slowly gathering attention. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a new paradigm that introduces way to develop software in a faster way by adopting available services. SOA application is better comprehended using its composition design. Thus in earlier researches, many metrics had been proposed in relation to SOA design. This paper focuses on proposed metrics from earlier research works specifically one that measure the structural properties of SOA application. The structural properties metrics selected are analyzed from both static and dynamic perspectives. Around seventeen papers are selected during the data collection process. The proposed metrics are then separated into its respective properties type and are further analyzed to find required characteristics for each discussed property. The result from the analysis is list of construction characteristics for each structural property that can be used as guidelines for future researchers that incline on proposing new metrics. The metrics classification also indicates on research gap within the area of structural properties metrics in SOA domain.

Bridging Service-Oriented Architecture and IEC 61499 for Flexibility and Interoperability

In recent years, requirements for interoperability, flexibility, and reconfigurability of complex automation industry applications have increased dramatically. The adoption of service-oriented architectures (SOAs) could be a feasible solution to meet these challenges. The IEC 61499 standard defines a set of management commands, which provides the capability of dynamic reconfiguration without affecting normal operation. In this paper, a formal model is proposed for the application of SOAs in the distributed automation domain in order to achieve flexible automation systems. Practical scenarios of applying SOA in industrial automation are discussed. In order to support the SOA IEC 61499 model, a service-based execution environment architecture is proposed. One main characteristic of flexibility-dynamic reconfiguration-is also demonstrated using a case study example.

A quality-driven approach for resources planning in Service-Oriented Architectures

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a paradigm for software development based on the concept of service. In SOA, the Quality of Services (QoS) impacts on the status of a business and on the relationship between service customers and providers. As customers expect to receive services with quality no less than they have paid for, it is usual to stress a SOA application in order to measure its QoS levels, which can be expensive and time consuming. This paper shows that the behavior of a SOA system can be modeled by Petri Nets and, from the model, QoS levels (performance and availability) can be estimated. In this way, the analysis can be conducted without necessarily implementing the real system, which tends to be valuable in the design phase of SOA. Additionally, we present a methodology to implement the model findings, which allows to verify its accuracy in practice. As a final contribution we associate our modeling approach to the Service Level Agreements (SLA) composition, which allows to discover and prevent bottlenecks delaying the system and to anticipate potential SLA violations. Two examples illustrate our results.
