Relationship between morphometric measurements and blood parameters in horses with varying adiposity levels and physiological conditions.

Understanding and finding the correlation between morphometric measurements and horse blood parameters is crucial for predicting equine metabolic issues. This study aims to analyse morphometric measurements and blood samples in horses with varying adiposity levels. Cross-sectional observational. A total of 50 horses were included in the study and categorized into groups based on their body condition score (BCS) and cresty neck score (CNS). The insulin concentration was significantly higher in overweight horses (p=0.022). Female horses exhibited higher cortisol concentrations (p=0.025) and girth circumference at the withers (p=0.004) compared to males. Lactating mares exhibited higher concentrations of serum total protein (p=0.012) and globulin (p=0.003). A positive correlation was observed between BCS and insulin concentrations (r=0.290, p=0.041). Negative correlations were found between neck circumference to height at withers and glucose (r=-0.309, p=0.029), CNS and glucose (r=-0.315, p=0.026) as well as between crest diameter and cortisol (r=-0.360, p=0.01). Increasing the sample size and conducting longitudinal studies would enhance the study's validity and reliability. Although insulin, glucose and cortisol concentrations have predictive capabilities based on signs and certain morphometric measurements, their correlations are not always strong. Therefore, this study challenges the notion that all overweight horses are unhealthy, as overweight horses can still have good metabolic health. Conversely, lean horses may also experience metabolic issues. Hence, relying solely on visual cues is insufficient to diagnose the metabolic status of horses. Other factors must also be considered to assess their health status accurately.

Serum chemistry, thyroxine concentration, and blood cell morphology of wild, young Blackchin Guitarfish Glaucostegus cemiculus sampled on the eastern Mediterranean coastline.

The Blackchin Guitarfish Glaucostegus cemiculus is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea and is critically endangered, but relevant routine laboratory data are unavailable. Our objectives were to determine the packed cell volume (PCV), comprehensive serum chemistry analytes, and serum total thyroxine (sTT4) concentration; compare serum albumin and serum globulin concentrations as measured by two different methods; and describe the blood cell morphology of healthy, free-ranging Blackchin Guitarfish. Wild Blackchin Guitarfish were captured using a seine net. Blood samples for serum chemistry and hematological analyses were obtained and measured using routine laboratory methods. The fish were tagged and released. This study included 43 Blackchin Guitarfish (17 males and 26 females) that were younger than 6 months as estimated based on total length and body weight. The median PCV (n = 23) was 22% (minimum-maximum [min-max] = 15-25%). Median sTT4 (n = 10) measured by chemiluminescence immunoassay was 7.86 nmol/L (min-max = 7.52-9.57 nmol/L). The study included a comprehensive, 25-analyte serum chemistry analysis (e.g., serum iron and unbound and total iron-binding capacity) and a morphological description of all blood cells. Serum electrophoresis (SEP; n = 13) yielded a consistent serum albumin-migrating protein fraction and four globulin fractions. Serum electrophoretograms corroborating these results are presented. In Blackchin Guitarfish, the serum albumin-migrating fraction measured by SEP combined with serum total protein concentration yields a much higher albumin concentration compared to that measured by bromocresol green spectrophotometry. The true identity of this albumin-migrating fraction remains to be identified. The analytes' calculated 2.5-97.5% interpercentile intervals should be considered as reference intervals applying to Blackchin Guitarfish of similar age but should be applied cautiously to adult fish.

Prevalence of co-infections with Ehrlichia spp. or Theileria spp. in dogs naturally infected with babesiosis in the Eastern Cape province

BackgroundCanine babesiosis and ehrlichiosis are tick-borne infections of great significance in South Africa. Theileriosis in dogs in South Africa is still poorly understood. Co-infection with multiple tick-borne diseases has been documented and is perceived as a common occurrence in South Africa. ObjectivesThe main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of co-infections with Ehrlichia canis or Theileria equi in dogs with babesiosis in the Eastern Cape province. There is a lack of data on canine tick-borne disease distribution in this region. Possible associations of population characteristics and haematological and biochemistry measures with a co-infection of E. canis or T. equi in these dogs were also investigated. MethodThe study population included 150 dogs naturally infected with babesiosis that presented to the Mdantsane State Veterinary Clinic between January 2021 and November 2021. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to confirm the Babesia spp. that the dogs were infected with and to identify co-infections. Association with co-infection for the following parameters were evaluated: sex, breed, age, duration of illness, leukocyte count, band neutrophil count, monocyte count, platelet count, ARC, and serum globulin concentration. Positive and negative predictive values of monocytosis, leukopenia, band neutrophilia, thrombocytopenia, and non-regenerative absolute reticulocyte count for co-infection were also calculated. ResultsBabesia rossi was identified in 149/150 samples and B. vogeli in only 1/150 samples. A co-infection prevalence of 2.0% (3/149; 95% CI: 0.4–5.7) with B. rossi and E. canis was found. No other co-infections were reported. No investigated variables showed significant associations with co-infections. Monocytosis, in particular, was not associated with co-infection. ConclusionCo-infection with other tick-borne diseases in dogs with babesiosis is uncommon in the Eastern Cape province. These findings raise the possibility that B. rossi may have a protective effect against other tick-borne diseases.

Optimal level of dietary arginine enhances growth performance, haemato-biochemical status, metabolic responses and growth-related gene expression of GIFT juveniles reared in inland saline water

The effects of arginine levels in diets on growth performance, survival, and haemato-biochemical responses and gene expression of genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT) juveniles raised in inland saline water (ISW) of 10 ppt were evaluated through a 60-day growth trial. Seven isoproteinaceous (⁓320 g protein/kg), isolipidic (80 g/kg) and isoenergetic (16.8 MJ DE/kg) diets with graded levels of arginine viz. A10 (10 g/kg), A12.5 (12.5 g/kg), A15 (15.0 g/kg), A17.5 (17.5 g/kg), A20 (20.0 g/kg), A22.5 (22.5 g/kg) and A25 (25.0 g/kg) were prepared. Acclimated GIFT juveniles (3.75 ± 0.017 g) were randomly assigned into seven treatments in triplicate with 15 fish/replicate and fed with respective diets thrice a day on a satiation basis. The percent weight gain, specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio, whole carcass protein, tissue alanine and aspartic acid aminotransferase activities, serum total protein, albumin and globulin concentration and expression of IGF-1 & IGF-1R genes of fish significantly increased, while feed conversion ratio significantly decreased with increasing arginine in the diet up to 17.5 g/kg and decreased thereafter. Additionally, white blood cell count increased with rising arginine levels in the diet. However, body indices, survival, whole carcass lipid, total ash and essential amino acids contents, activities of digestive and antioxidant enzymes, serum glucose level and blood haemoglobin level and red blood cell count of fish remained unchanged for different treatments. Based on broken-line regression and second order polynomial regression models in relation to hepatic IGF-1 gene expression and percent weight gain, the dietary optimal arginine level was found to be 15.97 and 16.76 g/kg and 17.06 and 17.41 g/kg, respectively with the optimum range of 15.97 to 17.41 g/kg for successful culture of GIFT in ISW of 10 ppt salinity.

Diagnosis and classification of portosystemic shunts: a machine learning retrospective case-control study.

Diagnosis of portosystemic shunts (PSS) in dogs often requires multiple diagnostic tests, and available clinicopathologic tests have limitations in sensitivity and specificity. The objective of this study was to train and validate a machine learning model (MLM) that can accurately predict the presence of a PSS utilizing routinely collected demographic data and clinicopathologic features. Dogs diagnosed with PSS or control dogs tested for PSS but had the condition ruled out (non-PSS) were identified. Dogs were included if a complete blood count and serum chemistry panel were available from PSS diagnostic testing. Dogs with a PSS were subcategorized as having a single intrahepatic PSS, a single extrahepatic PSS, or multiple extrahepatic PSS. An extreme gradient boosting (XGboost) MLM was trained with data from 70% of the cases, and MLM performance was determined on the test set, comprising the remaining 30% of the case data. Two MLMs were created. The first was designed to predict the presence of any PSS (PSS MLM), and the second to predict the PSS subcategory (PSS SubCat MLM). The trained PSS MLM had a sensitivity of 94.3% (95% CI 90.1-96.8%) and specificity of 90.5% (95% CI 85.32-94.0%) for dogs in the test set. The area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.976 (95% CI; 0.964-0.989). The mean corpuscular hemoglobin, lymphocyte count, and serum globulin concentration were most important in prediction classification. The PSS SubCat MLM had an accuracy of 85.7% in determining the subtype of PSS of dogs in the test set, with variable sensitivity and specificity depending on PSS subtype. These MLMs have a high accuracy for diagnosing PSS; however, the prediction of PSS subclassification is less accurate. The MLMs can be used as a screening tool to increase or decrease the index of suspicion for PSS before confirmatory diagnostics such as advanced imaging are pursued.

Star anise extract supplementation improved growth performance, hepatic-antioxidant enzyme status, hematology, serum biochemistry, and survival against crowding stress in Catla catla

This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of star anise extract (SAE) (prepared using ethanol as the solvent) on growth, proximate composition, hepatic-antioxidant enzyme status, blood-serum indices, and survival against crowding stress in Catla calta. Healthy fingerlings (N = 900) with an average initial weight of 14.16 ± 0.11 g were acclimatized under laboratory conditions and then placed in 5 hapas (60 fish in each) in triplicate. SAE was supplemented in basal feed at 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 g/kg and fed to the experimental groups up to satiation twice daily for 90 days. After completion of the feeding trial, 40 fish from each treatment were subjected to crowding stress (60 kg/m3) in triplicate. In the feeding trial, orthogonal polynomial contrast analysis revealed significant enhancement in final weight, weight gain and specific growth in linear and quadratic trends with weight gain percentage, feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency in a quadratic trend observed in response to SAE supplementation. The optimum supplementation level of SAE based on weight gain % was estimated to be 0.93 g/kg using broken line regression analysis (R2 = 0.97) for C. catla. No significant differences in survival rate or proximate composition were observed during the feeding trial. Dietary supplementation with SAE improved the activities of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) in linear and quadratic trends. The activities of hepatic enzymes, such as alanine transferase, alkaline phosphatase and aspartate transaminase, were also enhanced linearly and quadratically in response to SAE supplementation. Furthermore, hematological indices (red blood cells, white blood cells, hematocrit, hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) were also significantly improved with SAE supplementation. The serum total protein, albumin and globulin concentrations increased linearly and quadratically. Furthermore, stress markers (glucose, cortisol) and triglycerides were significantly reduced linearly and quadratically in response to SAE supplementation. Lysozyme activities also increased linearly and quadratically, indicating a better immune response. After 7 days of crowding stress, the lowest cumulative mortality was observed for the fish fed a diet supplemented with 1.0 g/kg SAE. In conclusion, dietary SAE supplementation significantly improved growth, hepatic-antioxidant enzyme status, blood-serum indices and survival against crowding stress in C. calta.

The effect of resveratrol on live weight, serum biochemistry and tissue antioxidant enzymes in rats

The aim of this study is to determine the effects of resveratrol used in adding it to drinking water. The study was carried out with 24 Wistar albino male 20 days rats for 40 days. The study design was determined as one control and two trial groups (each group with 2 parallels and each parallel with 4 rats). The first group was given a basal ration and drinking water. The second group was given the basal ration and drinking water with 10 mg/kg resveratrol; and the third group was given the basal ration and drinking water 20 mg/kg resveratrol. In serum biochemistry parameters, significant decreases were observed in serum Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) enzyme activity, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), albumin, total protein and globulin concentrations and increase in albumin/globulin ratio in groups given resveratrol (p<0.05). Regardless of the dose, an increase in the concentration of glutathione (GSH) from the antioxidant parameters was observed in the liver; In the kidney, an increase was observed in the Res10 group. In addition, a decrease in muscle superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and an increase in muscle and kidney catalase (CAT) activity were observed. A decrease was observed in malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations, which is a parameter of lipid peroxidation in the kidney. As a result, it was determined in the present study that resveratrol has antioxidant effects regardless of the way of use, and it was concluded that this additive can be used for various purposes.

The effects of Paulownia leaf extract dietary administration on growth, redox status, immune responses, and modulate intestinal microbial content in Nile tilapia

The primary goal of this trial was to examine how Paulownia leaf extract (PLE) dietary supplementation affected performance, feed utilization and efficiency, redox status, immunological responses, intestinal microbial content, and disease resistance of Oreochromis niloticus. Nile tilapia fry (0.52 ± 0.19 g) were fed four formulated diets enriched with graded amounts of PLE at 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 g kg−1 diet, respectively, for 60 days. At the end of the feeding trial, fish were intraperitoneal injected with Aeromonas hydrophila then the survival percentage was recorded daily and calculated mortality rate in all treated groups for 14 days. The performance findings showed that enriched tilapia diets with modest levels of PLE (0.25 or 0.5 g kg−1) substantially enhanced performance, consumed feed, feed efficiency, and feed utilization parameters compared to the control and other treatment groups, whereas the total serum protein and globulin concentrations were significantly (P < 0.001) higher in the fish provided a small quantity of PLE (2.5 g kg-1 diet) than in the control group. Compared to other treatment groups, all estimated liver enzymes and kidney function indicators improved significantly (P < 0.001) at PLE0.5, followed by PLE2.5, whereas the digestive enzymes’ activity increased significantly (P < 0.001) with increasing PLE level up to 0.5 g/kg diet compared to the un-supplemented group. In the same context, enriched tilapia diets with 0.5 g PLE/kg significantly (P < 0.001) boosted redox status and innate immune parameters as compared to other groups. Furthermore, increased PL inclusion levels in tilapia diets significantly (P < 0.05) increased crude protein and ash contents while decreasing fat levels in fish flesh. Moreover, fortified tilapia diets with high PLE levels significantly enhanced the survival percentage and diminished the development of all gram-negative intestinal microbial content. Finally, the results strongly recommend enriched tilapia diets with 0.25 or 0.5 g /Kg for promoting performance and health status.

Effect of dietary supplementation of betaine and organic minerals on growth performance, serum biochemical parameters, nutrients digestibility, and growth-related genes in broilers under heat stress

Global warming and climate changes have a detrimental impact on poultry production, causing substantial economic losses. This study investigated the effects of incorporating dietary betaine (BT) and organic minerals (OMs) on broilers’ performance as well as their potential to mitigate the negative impacts of heat stress (HS). Six hundred 1-day-old Ross 308 chicks were randomly allocated to 12 experimental treatments with 5 replicates of 10 birds each (5 male + 5 female). The birds were provided with diets containing BT (0 and 2,000 ppm) and OMs (0, 250, and 500 ppm), either individually or in combination, under both thermoneutral and HS-inducing temperatures. The HS conditions involved exposing the birds to cyclic periods of elevated temperature (35°C ± 2°C) for 6 h daily, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, starting from d 10 and continuing until d 35. The exposure to HS deteriorated birds’ growth performance; however, dietary BT and OMs inclusion improved the growth performance parameters bringing them close to normal levels. Carcass traits were not affected by dietary supplementation of BT, OMs, HS, or their interaction. Interestingly, while HS led to increased (P < 0.05) levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and hepatic malondialdehyde (MDA), these adverse effects were mitigated (P < 0.05) by the addition of BT and OMs. Moreover, dietary BT supplementation led to elevated serum total protein and globulin concentrations. Cyclic HS did not alter Mn, Zn, and Cu contents in the pectoral muscle. However, the incorporation of OMs at both levels increased concentrations of these minerals. Notably, the combination of 500 ppm OMs and 2,000 ppm BT improved Mn, Zn, Cu, and Fe digestibility, which has been compromised under HS conditions. Cyclic HS upregulated gene expression of interleukin-1β, heat shock protein 70, and Toll-like receptor-4 while downregulated the expression of claudin-1, uncoupling protein, growth hormone receptor, superoxide dismutase 1, glutathione peroxidase 1 and insulin-like growth factor 1. The aforementioned gene expressions were reversed by the combination of higher dietary levels of BT and OMs. In conclusion, the dietary supplementation of 500 ppm OMs along with 2,000 ppm BT yielded significant improvements in growth performance and mineral digestibility among broiler chickens, regardless of thermal conditions. Moreover, this combination effectively restored the expression of growth-related genes even under heat-stress conditions.

Biochemical effect of monkey tail on albino rabbits

Monkey tail is an addictive alcoholic drink made from fermented combo of marijuana leaves or seeds and dry/local gin. This study examined the effect of alcoholic concoction of marijuana leaves on blood chemistries of albino rabbits. Sixteen rabbits weighing 1.5 – 2.0 kg were randomly allocated into four groups and orally administered 2.5 ml/kg body weight daily of the marijuana concoction for 0, 10, 20 and 30 days respectively. There was no significant (p&gt;0.05) difference in the serum total protein, albumin and globulin concentrations of the treated animals. The serum AST and ALT activities increased significantly (p&lt;0.05) with increase in the duration of treatment. There were generally no significant (p&gt;0.05) differences in the kidney function parameters of the animals over the treatment duration. Histological analysis of the liver and kidney tissues of the animal administered monkey tail for 30 days showed evidence of fatty liver and acute interstitial nephritis respectively. The results showed that monkey tail on prolonged consumption could have negative hepatic and renal effects in animals with mild alterations in the lipid profile.

Fish oil supplementation as an omega-3 fatty acid source during gestation: effects on the performance of weaned male goat kids.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of fish oil supplementation, as an omega-3 fatty acids source, to ration of does in the different periods of pregnancy on the fattening performance of kids after weaning. Eighty German Fawn × Hair crossbred does were randomly divided into two groups; half were given fish oil in the first half of pregnancy (FO group), while the other half were given saturated fat (PF (control) group). Then, the goats in the FO and PF groups were randomly divided into two subgroups, and half of the goats were fed fish oil during the second half of pregnancy (FO-FO and FO-PF groups), while the other half was fed saturated fat (PF-FO and PF-PF groups). Thus, study groups of kids were formed according to the nutrition program of the does described above. Forty-seven male kids (84.6 ± 2.44 days old; 14.5 ± 3.09 kg live weight, mean ± standard deviation) were fed for 56 days after weaning, and their weight, feed consumption, serum biochemical parameters, carcass performance, and meat quality characteristics were evaluated. Maternal nutrition significantly affected live weight gain and serum AST, glucose, total protein, and globulin concentrations (P ≤ 0.050). The live weight gain of kids in the PF-PF and PF-FO groups was higher than that in the FO-FO and FO-PF groups. Maternal nutrition tended to affect the hot and cold carcass weights of male kids (P = 0.078 and P = 0.084, respectively). In conclusion, fish oil supplementation during gestation could negatively affect the fattening performance of kids after weaning, especially the daily live weight gain, although it tended to positively affect hot and cold carcass weights.

Prevalence of neoplasia and concurrent diseases in dogs and cats with hypercobalaminemia: A retrospective case-control study.

Hypercobalaminemia is infrequently reported in companion animals and is considered of low clinical significance. Recent studies have described its association with inflammatory, immune-mediated, endocrine, and neoplastic conditions in dogs and cats. We aimed to investigate the association between hypercobalaminemia and neoplasia in companion animals and to identify other concurrent diseases or clinicopathologic changes. This is a retrospective, case-control study. Medical records of patients with measured serum cobalamin concentration (2015-2020) and no history of prior supplementation were reviewed. Hypocobalaminemic animals were excluded. Variables were compared between groups (hypercobalaminemic vs. normocobalaminemic) using non-parametric statistics. Data are presented as median (range). Thirty-five dogs and eight cats were hypercobalaminemic. At baseline, neoplasia was confirmed in 4/35 hypercobalaminemic dogs versus 11/70 control dogs (P = 0.77) and 0/8 hypercobalaminemic cats versus 3/16 control cats (P = 0.53). Cases without neoplasia at baseline were followed for 409 (13-1854) days (dogs, n = 78) and 395 (28-1670) days (cats, n = 21). During follow-up, neoplasia was diagnosed in 4/27 hypercobalaminemic dogs versus 3/51 control dogs (P = 0.23) and 1/8 hypercobalaminemic cats versus 0/13 control cats (P = 0.38). Pancreatitis was more frequent in hypercobalaminemic dogs (P = 0.006). Hypercobalaminemic dogs had higher serum total protein (P = 0.014), globulin (P = 0.001), and CRP (P = 0.032) concentrations and lower serum sodium (P = 0.012) and chloride (P = 0.033) concentrations than controls. Hypercobalaminemic cats had higher serum total protein concentrations than controls (P = 0.008). Our results suggest that hypercobalaminemia is not associated with the presence or development of neoplasia in dogs and cats but may be associated with systemic inflammatory conditions, including pancreatitis, in dogs.

Comparison of the effects of probiotic-based formulations on growth, feed utilization, blood constituents, cecal fermentation, and duodenal morphology of rabbits reared under hot environmental conditions

Abstract The present study aimed to assess the effects of three probiotic-supplemented diets on growth, cecal fermentation, blood biochemical, and intestinal morphological features in growing rabbits reared under summer conditions. Rabbits were allotted into four groups: G1 rabbits were fed the basal diet (control), G2 rabbits received Enterococcus faecium (EF) and Clostridium butyricum (CB) complexes (1 × 108 and 2.5 × 106 cfu/kg diet, respectively), G3 rabbits were given CB (2.5 × 106 cfu/kg diet) and yeast complexes (1 g/kg diet), and G4 rabbits received EF (2 × 108 cfu/kg diet) and yeast (1 g/kg diet). G2 rabbits exhibited the highest performances in terms of enhanced body weight and weight gain, protein efficiency ratio and feed conversion ratio (P&lt;0.05). Serum total protein, globulin, immunoglobulin M, and highdensity lipoprotein concentrations were higher in probiotic-fed rabbits than those in controls. Additionally, lipid profile parameters were significantly reduced in the probiotic-fed rabbits, with the lowest concentrations measured in G4 rabbits (P&lt;0.05). Rabbits given EF and CB had the highest total volatile fatty acid (VFA ) and propionic acid levels and the lowest ammonia concentrations. Increased villi length and muscular layer thickness and reduced crypt depth were observed in rabbits receiving EF and CB compared with the values obtained in controls (P&lt;0.05). In summary, supplementing fattening rabbit diets with EF and CB, as a novel formulation, might be a promising and easy method to enhance growth performance under hot climate conditions by improving the feed utilization, immune response, serum lipid profile, cecal VFA production, and duodenal morphology.

Cyclical 10-day dosing of melphalan for canine multiple myeloma.

Canine multiple myeloma (MM) is typically treated with melphalan chemotherapy. A protocol with repeated 10-day cyclical dosing of melphalan has been used at our institution but has not been described in the literature. Our objectives were to describe the outcome and adverse events of this protocol in a retrospective case series. We hypothesised the cyclical 10-day protocol would have similar outcomes compared to other reported chemotherapy protocols. Dogs diagnosed with MM that received melphalan treatment at Cornell University Hospital for Animals were identified through a database search. Records were retrospectively reviewed. Seventeen dogs met inclusion criteria. Lethargy was the most common presenting complaint. The median duration of clinical signs was 53 days (range, 2-150 days). Seventeen dogs had hyperglobulinemia with 16/17 having monoclonal gammopathies. Sixteen dogs had bone marrow aspiration and cytology performed at initial diagnosis and plasmacytosis was diagnosed in all. Based on serum globulin concentrations, 10 of 17 dogs (59%) achieved complete response (CR), and 3 dogs (18%) achieved partial response (PR), for an overall response rate of 76%. The median overall survival time was 512 days (range, 39-1065). Retinal detachment (n = 3) and maximum response of CR/PR (n = 13) were associated with overall survival on multivariate analysis (p = .045 and .046, respectively). Adverse events were minimal with diarrhoea being the most reported (n = 6). This cyclical 10-day protocol was better-tolerated with fewer adverse events than with other reported chemotherapy protocols, but response rate was also lower, likely due to a lower dosing intensity.

Association between metabolome and neutrophil count in intrauterine fluid after insemination in the mare

Assessment of post-breeding endometritis is challenging in the mare. Correlation analysis of metabolite concentration in serum and intrauterine fluid with neutrophil count in intrauterine fluid after insemination was performed in 17 Spanish mares. After body condition score (BCS) was determined, a uterine edema score and intrauterine fluid diameter (IUF) were determined by ultrasonography at insemination and 8 hours afterwards, when a blood sample and low volume uterine lavage sample were collected. Neutrophils in the recovered fluid were counted using a Neubauer camera. In lavage supernatant fraction and in serum, metabolite determination by spectrophotometry was performed. Data were analyzed with PROC CORR (SAS) after log transformation of neutrophil count, oedema score and IUF. There was no association between edema or IUF at insemination and edema/IUF at lavage. The BCS tended to be positively associated with edema score (r=0.466, p=0.059) and IUF 8 hours after insemination (r=0.4562, p=0.066), but not at the time of insemination. Correlation analysis of BCS and neutrophil count did not reach significance (r=0.3928, p=0.118). Age tended to be positively associated with neutrophil count (r=0.4112, p=0.100) and was highly associated with urea concentrations in the IUF (r=6221, p=0.008). Edema at lavage was correlated with serum globulin concentrations (r=0.50911, P=0.03). The IUF was also correlated with serum albumin (r=0.5396, p=0.02),but no association with globulin was detected; instead IUF was correlated with serum glucose concentrations (r=0.4818, p=0.05). Neutrophil count was positively correlated with specific metabolites (cholesterol, urea, globulins), but not with glucose, triglycerides or albumin concentrations in the IUF. Neutrophil count was associated with serum globulin concentration (r=0.548, p=0.02), but no other correlations were found. The only metabolite that was correlated in serum and IUF was globulin (r=0.4777, p=0.05). Glucose and urea concentrations in the IUF were negatively associated with serum albumin (r= -0.6173, p=0.008 and r= - 0.4533, p=0.06 respectively). This is probably the first report showing an association between BCS and oedema score and intrauterine fluid after insemination, suggesting that in obese mares, clearance of physiological endometritis post-breeding is altered. The finding of the association between the oedema and neutrophil count with serum globulin concentrations, and the positive correlation of globulins in serum and uterine fluid suggest a systemic pro-inflammatory state that is present locally. Moreover, serum albumin was negatively correlated with glucose and urea in the uterine fluid. Overall, neutrophil count in low volume lavage obtained after breeding is consistent with the metabolome in uterine fluid and serum, and thus neutrophil count and serum globulin determination could be used as a diagnostic tool for post-breeding endometritis.

Obesity and age on post-breeding endometritis in the mare

Obesity has been associated with uterine dysfunctions in the pregnant mare (Sessions-B et al, Biology of Reproduction, 2018: 99(4), 761-772). This study hypothesized that obesity itself (body condition score, BCS) affected parameters associated with post-breeding endometritis. Mares (n=17) were classified by their BCS (Henneke et al., 1983) in obese (>7, n=6) and normal-weight (<7, n=11) and age group in mature (5 to 14 years, n=9) and aged mares (15 to 21 years, n=8). Transrectal ultrasonography was performed every day and oedema score and intrauterine fluid diameter were determined at insemination and 8 hours afterwards when a low volume (50 mL) uterine flush with PBS was performed (lavage). Neutrophils were counted using a Neubauer camera and the flush was centrifuged; the supernatant was frozen for metabolite determination by spectrophotometry. Blood samples were taken at this moment also for metabolite determination. Data were analyzed with PROC MIXED (SAS) including BCS and age as fixed effects. Data not normal was log-transformed. Obese mares tended to present greater neutrophil counts than normal-weight mares (43.6±8.3 vs 28.8±5.7 × 106/mL P=0.08); aged mares had greater counts than mature mares(46.7±7.7 vs 21.0±6.3 × 106/mL P=0.02). No effect of age or BCS was found on oedema and IUF at insemination or lavage. In serum, glucose, triglycerides, albumin, and urea concentrations were unaffected. Serum cholesterol concentrations were affected by BCS (P<0.01) and tended to be affected by age (P<0.09). Serum globulin concentrations were not affected by BCS, but aged mares had greater concentrations than mature mares (P=0.05). In the intrauterine fluid, BCS did not affect albumin or glucose concentration nor did age affect them. No effect was observed in cholesterol or triglyceride concentrations in the IUF. Although urea concentrations in the IUF were not affected by BCS, aged mares had greater concentrations than mature mares (1.22±0.23 vs 0.37±0.19 mM, P=0.016). Although the number of animals is limited, data shows that obesity and age are associated with greater neutrophil counts in the uterine lumen 8 hours after insemination, suggesting an altered uterine clearance in these mares. As far as we know this is the first description of metabolites in IUF according to obesity and age, showing significantly greater urea concentrations in the aged group.

Cross-sectional characterization of renal function in cats with caudal stomatitis.

The objective of the study was to compare renal functional biomarkers in cats and in caudal stomatitis (CS) and in age-matched control cats. A cross-sectional, case-control study was conducted on 44 client-owned cats with CS that were prospectively enrolled and evaluated for a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment at one of four institutions. Renal function was assessed with measurement of serum creatinine, urea nitrogen, serum symmetric dimethylarginine, urinalysis, urine protein:creatinine ratio and urine protein electrophoresis. Affected gingiva was biopsied to confirm the diagnosis of stomatitis. Renal biochemical analyses from the experimental group were compared with those of 44 age-matched controls without CS enrolled prospectively or retrospectively after presenting to the primary institution for routine healthcare. Control cats were included if they were clinically stable, their chronic illnesses were well managed and minimal dental disease was present on examination. Renal biomarkers were compared between groups using a t-test or the Mann-Whitney U-test. Frequency of azotemia, proteinuria and the clinical diagnosis of renal disease were compared using Fisher's exact test. Relative to the control group, cats in the CS group had significantly lower serum creatinine (P <0.001) and albumin concentrations (P <0.001), urine specific gravity (P = 0.024) and hematocrit (P = 0.003), and higher serum phosphorus (P <0.001), potassium (P <0.001) and globulin concentrations (P <0.001), white blood cell count (P <0.001) and urine protein:creatinine ratio (P = 0.009). There were no significant differences in serum symmetric dimethylarginine or urea nitrogen concentrations. No clinically significant findings were noted on urine protein electrophoresis. There were no significant differences in the frequency of azotemia, proteinuria or renal disease categories between the two groups. The present study does not demonstrate a significant difference in the frequency of kidney disease between cats with and without CS. Longitudinal evaluation is warranted to investigate the relationship between renal disease and CS.

Disseminated intramuscular anaplastic plasma cell tumour in a dog

AbstractA 12‐year‐old, neutered, male Jack Russell terrier was diagnosed with a disseminated intramuscular anaplastic round cell tumour with primary hepatic, splenic, subcutaneous and medullary involvement. The tumour was confirmed by histopathology, immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction analysis of antigen receptor gene rearrangements to be of plasma cell origin. Tumour cells were lambda light chain‐positive, multiple myeloma 1‐positive and pan‐B marker‐negative (paired box protein 5, CD20 and CD79) and showed clonal immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangement. Computed tomography did not identify osteolytic lesions. Plasma cells represented 14% of bone marrow cells. Serum and urine electrophoresis were not performed because of a normal serum globulin concentration. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first case report describing a disseminated diffuse intramuscular anaplastic plasma cell tumour in a dog without evidence of multiple myeloma on initial presentation or progression to multiple myeloma or plasma cell leukaemia during follow‐up.

Effects of functional oil blend on performance, blood metabolites, organ biometry and intestinal morphometry in nursery piglets

This study was conducted to assess the effects of functional oil (FO) blend on performance, blood metabolites, organ biometry and intestinal morphometry in piglets. A total of 128 crossbreed piglets (Landrace × Large White, 64 uncastrated males and 64 females, 21 d of age, and 6.79 ± 1.76 kg BW) were allocated in a randomized complete block design with two dietary treatments: a FO-free (FOF) diet or a diet based on added FO (1,500 mg/kg of diet with castor oil plus cashew nutshell oil). Piglets fed FO showed higher (p ≤ 0.05) average daily feed intake, daily body weight gain and final body weight after 23 d of study. For the total period, piglets fed FO showed greater (p = 0.007) feed conversion ratio. On d 23, higher serum total protein (p = 0.026) and globulin (p = 0.050) concentration, lower liver (p = 0.042) and stomach (p = 0.074) weight, and greater (p = 0.082) villi height (VH) in duodenum were observed in piglets fed FO. Nonetheless, piglets fed FOF showed greater (p = 0.054) ileal VH, but greater (p = 0.004) crypt depth (CD) in jejunum. Piglets fed FO showed higher VH to CD ratio in jejunum (p = 0.068) and duodenum (p = 0.074) on d 23 and 37, respectively. Based on the results, FO blend improved the performance of weaned piglets; however, it negatively affected the feed conversion ratio in the total period. Moreover, FO blend promoted changes in total protein concentrations and improvements in digestive and absorptive capacity assessed through VH to CD ratio, with a significant reduction in organs.

Effect of replacing cottonseed meal with canola meal on growth performance, blood metabolites, thyroid function, and ruminal parameters of growing lambs

The objective was to clarify the impact of replacing cottonseed meal with canola meal (CM) on growth performance, blood metabolites, thyroxin function, and ruminal parameters of growing lambs. Twenty-four growing Barki male lambs (4–5 months of age) were assigned randomly into four equal groups (6 lambs each). Four dietary treatments were the control group with 0% CM (CON) and three experimental groups where CM replaced 25% (CN1), 50% (CN2), and 75% (CN3) of cottonseed meal. There were no dietary effects (P > 0.05) on the lambs’ feed intake, average daily gain, and feed conversion ratio of the lambs. The dietary CM linearly decreased the concentrations of serum total proteins (P = 0.003), albumin (P = 0.010), globulin (P = 0.011), AST (P = 0.041), and urea (P = 0.001) in growing lambs. The levels of ALT and creatinine, however, were not significantly affected by dietary treatments (P > 0.05). Furthermore, serum triiodothyronine, thyroxine, and electrolyte concentrations were similar (P > 0.05) in different dietary groups. Dietary treatments significantly affected the values of ruminal pH and ammonia at 0 h (P = 0.003 and 0.048, respectively) and 3 h (P = 0.033 and P = 0.006, respectively) postfeeding. The CN3 group showed significantly higher concentrations of ruminal ammonia at 0 and 3 h postfeeding. Furthermore, dietary CM (CN3) significantly reduced the ruminal pH values at 0 and 3 h postfeeding. Meanwhile, dietary treatments did not affect the concentration of total VFAs in the ruminal fluid. In conclusion, CM can replace the cottonseed meal (up to 75%) in lamb diets without compromising their growth performance, thyroid function, and ruminal fermentation parameters.
