Self-concept and acceptance of lesbianism tendency among senior secondary school girls in ovwie local government area of delta state, nigeria.

This study stems from the observation that lesbianism is fast creeping into Girls’ secondary schools in Nigeria. Using the ex-post facto research design, the study examined the influence of self-concept (moral and academic) on the acceptance of lesbianism tendency among 218 senior secondary school girls in Ovwie Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State, Nigeria with a population of 2,112 senior secondary school girls. The respondents were randomly selected. The three research hypotheses formulated to guide this study were tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The instrument for data collection was the Self-concept and Acceptance of Lesbianism Tendency Questionnaire (SALTQ). The data were analyzed with the population and independent t-tests as the statistical tools. The results showed that the level of lesbianism tendency among senior secondary school girls in the study area was significantly high while a significant influence of moral and academic self-concepts on acceptance of lesbianism tendency was found to exist among the girls. Based on the findings, it was recommended that efforts should be made by the stakeholders of education to reduce the level of lesbianism among the senior secondary school girls by instituting programmes that sensitize them on the need to develop proper self-concept, the word of God and motivational talks can be appropriately used to encourage the development of moral concepts among the students, and self-concept enhancement programmes should be introduced in schools to enhance academic self-concept.

Personality Traits of Secondary School Girls Aspiring to Study Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in Benin Metropolis of Edo State, Nigeria

The study examined some personality traits of secondary school girls aspiring to STEM careers in the Benin metropolis of Edo State in Nigeria. This study is a descriptive survey with a correlational design. The population of the study consisted of senior secondary school girls in sciences selected from federal, state and private schools in Benin metropolis of Edo State, Nigeria. Five hundred (500) female students formed the sample for the study. The data were analyzed using frequency counts, mean, standard deviation and chi-square. The hypotheses were tested using the Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the multiple regressions. The findings of the study among others were: age and course of interest have a significant influence on girls aspiring to STEM careers; flexibility, self-esteem, enterprising, team spirit, social, and stress tolerance were exhibited by the girls; and that personality trait is a significant predictor of girls aspiring to STEM careers. It was concluded that the personality traits identified affects the single sex and mixed schools in about the same way. This implies that school type does not affect the personality traits of the girls much. Therefore, all secondary school girls have fairly equal chances of excelling in STEM careers. The study therefore recommended among others that: Parents, teachers and all stakeholders in education should be enlightened on participation of girls in STEM. Gender discrimination by employers should be discouraged. Secondary school students especially females should be encouraged to develop STEM competencies and disabuse their minds from the fear of some STEM subjects.

Physical and Social Self-Concept and Lesbianism Tendencies Among Senior Secondary School Girls in Uvwie Local Government Area (L.G.A.) Of Delta State, Nigeria

The study investigated the influence of physical and social self-concept on lesbianism tendency among senior secondary school girls in Uvwie Local Government Area (L.G.A) of Delta State, Nigeria. The ex-post facto research design was used for this study. Three research hypotheses were formulated to guide this study namely: 1. Physical self-concept does not significantly influence lesbianism tendencies among senior secondary school girls.2. Social self-concept does not significantly influence lesbianism tendencies among senior secondary school girls. The hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 level of significance. A sample of 218 senior secondary school girls was randomly selected from a population of 2,112 senior secondary school girls in Uvwie L.G.A. of Delta State, Nigeria. The Self-concept and Lesbianism Tendency Questionnaire (SLTQ) was the instrument for data collection. It was face-validated by two experts in Measurement and Evaluation and one expert in Guidance and Counselling at the University of Calabar, Nigeria. The reliability of the instrument was established through a trial test which yielded a Cronbach alpha reliability estimate of between 0.73 and 0.85 making the instrument to be deemed reliable. The independent t-test statistical technique was the statistical tool for data analysis. Findings revealed a significant influence of physical self-concept on lesbianism tendency and a significant influence of social self-concept on lesbianism tendency among the secondary school girls who participated in the study. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that professional counsellors should play a unique role in addressing issues related to sexual orientation while also making conscious efforts toward shaping the right behaviours.

Menstrual-Related Headaches Among a Cohort of African Adolescent Girls.

IntroductionMigraine attacks associated with menstruation are generally perceived as more severe than attacks outside this period.Aim and ObjectiveThe study aimed at determining the frequency of menstrual-related headaches among a cohort of senior secondary school girls in Abeokuta, Nigeria. We also determined its burden among these school girls.MethodologyThis study was cross-sectional using a validated adolescent headache survey questionnaire. A self-administration of the instrument was done during a school visit. A headache was classified using the ICHD-II criteria.ResultsOf the 183 students interviewed, 123(67.2%) had recurrent headaches. Mean age ±SD, 16.18±1.55 (range 12–19). The prevalence of definite migraine was 17.5% while the prevalence of probable migraine was 6.0%. The prevalence of tension-type headache was 41.0%. Migraine was significantly menstrual-related (p=0.001, 95% CI=1.06–6.63). Median pain severity score was higher among MRH group (p=0.043). The median number of days of reduced productivity and missed social activities was significantly higher in the MRH group; p= 0.001 and p=0.03, respectively. Subjects with MRH were more incapacitated by their headaches (p= 0.003).ConclusionMenstrually related headache is prevalent even among the adolescent and it has adversely affected their productivity and social life. Care of adolescent with headaches should be intensified.

Effectiveness of adolescent health education among secondary and senior secondary school girls in rural Bangalore

Background: Adolescence is a phase of transition from childhood to adulthood. It is during this period that the adolescents acquire sexual and reproductive maturity. Health education given to adolescent girls helps build their knowledge, motivates them to improve and maintain their health, prevent diseases and reduce risky behaviors among them hence the study was done to assess the effectiveness of health education among rural adolescent girls.Methods: An educational interventional study was carried out among adolescent girls in one secondary and one senior secondary school in Hoskote, rural Bangalore. Initial survey was done to assess the baseline knowledge regarding adolescent health issues using semi structured, self-administered questionnaire. Health educational sessions were conducted using audio-visual aids such as slide presentations, charts, posters and handouts. The education was followed by an interactive session with the students to clarify doubts and the impact of intervention was assessed.Results: The study comprised of 150 students (75 secondary and 75 senior secondary school girls). It was found that overall general knowledge regarding adolescent changes, menstruation and menstrual hygiene, pregnancy, contraception and sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS was poor among the study participants. Following educational session statistically significant improvement was observed among the students as detected by improved correct response rates.Conclusions: Study successfully proved that adolescent health education was effective in improving the knowledge among adolescent girls in rural area.

Targeting cervical cancer campaigns on teenage high schoolers in resource-limited economies: lessons from an intervention study of Nigerian senior secondary school girls

Given the dearth of government-sponsored programmes, preventive lifestyles and practices are the realistic hopes for millions of women in developing countries against cervical cancer. Early interventions for teenage high school girls have been advocated recently, but evidence-base for sustainable activities at this demographic is lacking. This article reduces this gap by determining the impact of two cervical cancer education techniques. This is a 6-month interventional cohort study of 432 female high school students in South-eastern Nigeria. A total of 317 (73.4%) and 301 (69.7%) valid responses were received from the pre-intervention (16.8 ± 1.5 years) and post-intervention (17.2 ± 1.6 years) surveys, respectively. About 213 (70.8%) were fully engaged with the interventions. Logistic regression revealed that participants who were 'engaged' with the interventions, either through symposium attendance or by reading of the printed handouts, showed significant improvements across multiple cervical cancer parameters regarding knowledge on 'pap smears' (analysed with four items), 'HPV vaccine' (two items) and 'risk factors' (two items). Improvements in Knowledge of 'early symptoms' were not improved, with 'post-coital bleeding' [odds ratio (OR) = 0.95; P = 0.87] and 'being asymptomatic' (OR = 0.69; P = 0.32) remaining statistically similar between the engaged and the unengaged. If 'engagement' with either intervention was disregarded, a chi-square analysis identified no significant improvement in knowledge on any parameter. Ensuring 'engagement' with intervention campaigns is vital to achieving effective and sustainable cervical cancer knowledge. Engagement may be achieved by repeating the education activities across all the years/classes that make up high school in each developing country, along with formal examinations at each level.

A comparative study of Delhi and Vidarbha on academic achievement, sports performance, physical fitness and attitude towards physical education of Senior Secondary School students

The most important model for physical education in this century has been the development modern physical education through sports. Many people who aspire to a career in the sports and physical education profession had youth experiences in sports they were primary motivating factors. The present study found out Delhi and Vidarbha region on academic achievement, sports performance, physical fitness and attitude towards physical education of Senior Secondary School students. This study was delimited to the Senior Secondary School girls of Delhi and Vidarbha of girls of the age of 16 to 18 years. Methodology of the study 200 subjects Delhi and Vidarbha region. All 400 girls students had been collected data. AAHPHER physical fitness test and Dr. Beena Shah achievement scale questionnaire and attitude towards physical education and sports performance questionnaire of G.P. Thakur and Manju Thakur ware used to collect the data. The means and standard deviations were calculated and to see the effect of physical fitness on attitude toward physical education and sports and on academic achievements and sports performance 't' test was applied. The study concluded that Delhi students compare Vidharba students better physical fitness in girl's students have better attitude toward physical education and sports, better academic achievements and better sports performance.

Prosocial Behaviour among Senior Secondary School Students in Relation to their Home Environment

Prosocial behavior is any act performed with the goal of benefiting another person. It is the action to benefit other people like the act of donating, helping, cooperating, volunteering and sharing. Prosocial behavior develops gradually as a process of socialization.. Home appears to have positive influence in developing socialized traits of a child. Prosocial behavior of course has its roots in our social upbringing which starts at home. Keeping in view the importance of home environment as a factor to induce pro-social behavior among children, it was thought to conduct the study. The purpose of the study was to explore the prosocial behaviour of the senior secondary school students and to find out how home environment could be influencing the same. Descriptive survey method was used in this study to obtain pertinent and precise information. The sample of the study included 200 senior secondary school students selected by using simple random sampling technique from Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur districts of Punjab. For the purpose of drawing out the results, the investigator used statistical techniques like correlation, t-test, mean and standard deviation along with graphical presentations. The study revealed that there exists no significant difference between the senior secondary school boys and girls in their prosocial behaviour. Among the senior secondary boys and girls no significant difference in control, protectiveness and permissiveness dimensions of home environment was found. The study also revealed that there exists positive relationship between prosocial behavior and home environment dimensions like control, deprivation of privileges, nurturance and permissiveness of the senior secondary school students. However, prosocial behaviour of the senior secondary school students is not positively influenced by the home environment in protectiveness, punishment, conformity, social isolation, and reward and rejection dimensions.

Tackling Inhibitions to Careers in Science and Technology through Differentiated Mentoring Approach

Encouraging women to go into Science and Technology (S&T) careers should start with the young girls. In developing countries, such as Nigeria, girls experience challenges in studying science and technological subjects and pursuing careers in these professions. The study identifies factors that inhibit Nigerian girls from undertaking careers in S&T. A sample of 228 Nigerian Senior Secondary School girls was used for the study. A “Female Students Science and Technology Inhibitions Questionnaire” (FSSTIQ) was used to elicit responses from the girls on conceptual, psychological and physical inhibitions to their studying S&T subjects. Percentages, mean and standard deviation were used to describe the data obtained. The results reveal that the major conceptual, psychological and physical problems the girls encountered were mathematical concepts, perception of S&T subjects as being difficult, and inadequate time to study. A “Differentiated Mentoring” approach is recommended for engendering effective mentoring of school girls interested in pursuing science and technology careers.

The Impact of Poverty on Senior Secondary School Girls' Prospect for Tertiary Education in Nigeria

Poverty has degraded lives for centuries; and human deprivation is still persistent in the developing countries of the world. It is in this regard that this study examined the impact of poverty on senior secondary school girls’ prospect for tertiary education in Nigeria. The aim was to ascertain the extent to which the prospect of senior secondary school girls for tertiary education is susceptible to poverty. The study was conducted adopting empirical design. The data used for the study were time series data. A stochastic model was specified for the study to show the impact of poverty on senior secondary school girls’ prospect for tertiary education in Nigeria during the period under study (1992 – 2011). The ordinary least square (OLS) regression technique with econometric views 3 software was used to analyze the study’s data. The estimated result showed that both poverty and unemployment are significant determinants of senior secondary school girls’ prospect for tertiary education in Nigeria. It is therefore suggested among other things that Governments should not only direct policy actions towards encouraging the education of the girls from poor homes by creating separate scholarship platforms for them that can fund their education from secondary school to university level; but also should extend the free education policy to secondary school level in order to give every child from a poor home the opportunity to have at least secondary education. This would help to reduce the girl-child trafficking for sex work, as well as all poverty stimulated juvenile delinquencies in the country.

Anthropometry and Menarcheal Status of Adolescent Nigerian Urban Senior Secondary School Girls

BackgroundAge at menarche is a significant indicator of growth and sexual maturation in girls. During adolescence, anthropometry provides a tool for monitoring and evaluating the hormone-mediated changes in growth and reproductive maturation.ObjectivesWe aimed to examine the anthropometric status of pre- and post-menarcheal Nigerian adolescent girls attending senior secondary schools.Materials and MethodsIn this school-based cross-sectional survey, a pre-tested structured self-administered questionnaire was set for obtaining the socio-demographic data (age at menarche, number of siblings, occupation and educational attainment of their parents, etc.), while the anthropometric status data was obtained by direct measurement of weight and height. The body mass index (BMI) and the ponderal index (PI) of each participant were computed from their respective weight and height values. The study was designed to include all the students in the two schools that were randomly selected. The anthropometric indices of pre- and post-menarcheal girls were compared.ResultsOut of a total population of 2,166 students, 2,159 (99.7%) participated but 9 questionnaires were incompletely filled and were rejected, leaving 2,150 (510 were pre-menarcheal and 1,640 were post- menarcheal) for further analysis. The mean menarcheal age was 13.44 ± 1.32 years (95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 13.38-13.5). Girls from families with high socio-economic status (SES) attained menarche 8.0 and 9.0 months earlier than their counterparts from families with middle and low SES respectively. Girls from small-size families had a significantly lower menarcheal age than their counterparts from large-size families. A comparison of the anthropometric indices of pre- and post-menarcheal girls showed: weight, 41.1 ± 6.3 kg (95% CI = 40.6-41.6) vs 47.6 ± 7.2 kg (95% CI = 47.3-47.9), P < 0.001; height, 146.2± 5.5 cm (95% CI = 145.7-146.7) vs 153.6 ± 9.9 cm (95% CI = 153.1-154.1), P < 0.001; BMI, 16.4 ± 1.9 (95% CI = 16.2-16.6) vs 18.8 ± 1.6 (95% CI = 18.7-18.9), P < 0.001; and PI, 45.1 ± 1.7 (95% CI = 45.0-45.2) vs 44.6 ± 1.4 (95% CI = 44.5-44.7), P < 0.01.ConclusionsPost-menarcheal girls were significantly taller and heavier with a higher BMI than their pre-menarcheal counterparts, but the pre-menarcheal girls possessed a better linear body as reflected by the PI.

A sample of 358 senior secondary school girls completed the measures assessing body-part satisfaction and behaviors associated with eating. Analysis indicated that even though only 4.8% of the girls were overweight, 85.16% desired to weigh less. These Chinese teenage girls were concerned about their weight, and the desire for slimness was widespread. Correlations indicated that higher Body Mass Index was associated with lower satisfaction with weight. Lower scores on weight satisfaction were associated with higher scores on attitudes of dieting and food preoccupation.

Sexual Activity and Contraceptive Use among Female Adolescents: A Report from Port Harcourt, Nigeria

Seven hundred and sixty-eight randomly selected single senior secondary school girls from Port Harcourt (mean age 16.32 years) were surveyed on aspects of sexual activity and contraceptive use. Two hundred and ten pregnancies (24 deliveries and 186 induced abortions) had occurred in 142 out of 605 girls (78.8%) who admitted being sexually exposed. The mean, modal and youngest ages of initiation into sexual activity were 15.04, 15 and 12 years respectively. At the time of the survey, 190 girls (24.7%) were sexually active and 74.2% of their male consorts were older working men, suggesting financial gains as a motive for the girls' sexual activity. Other findings were high awareness (72.4%) of the relationship between sexual activity and sexually transmitted diseases; a rather low level (56%) of knowledge of effective contraceptive methods, and limitation of contraceptive method use by sexually active girls, largely to the rhythm and withdrawal methods. Exposure to multiple sexual partners and a high level of parental approval of subjects' use of contraception were also present. In view of our findings, it is suggested that active efforts to promote sexuality education and contraceptive use should be intensified among Nigerian adolescents.

Trait attribution to a described action as a function of changes in salient information

The relative importance of five information variables in determining the amount of friendliness attributed to a described action was analyzed using a five-way ANOVA. The variables (a) antecedent condition, (b) disposition of the actor, (c) intent of the actor, (d) likely social outcome of the act, and (e) actual social outcome of the act, were given a high friendliness value and a low friendliness value. Thirty-two stories which described the same act, but which systematically differed in background information, were made by combining one of the two values of the five variables in all possible combinations. Senior secondary school girls read the stories and rated the friendliness of the act and the friendliness of the actor on 9-place, unipolar rating scales. Results showed that the intent of the actor contributed the only significant source of variance to the trait attribution to the act. The trait attribution to the actor was significantly influenced by intent, antecedent condition, and disposition.

The epidemiology of self-poisoning in Hobart, 1968-1972.

Continued monitoring of the rates for treated self-poisoning in Hobart over a five year period has revealed a marked increase in this behaviour. Attention is drawn to the load this places on medical and psychiatric services. The present study has shown that the rise in self-poisoning was statistically significant among young males and females of most age-groups. This rise was particularly notable in senior secondary schoolgirls. In terms of geographical distribution, significant increases were observed in the economically depressed central areas of Hobart and in satellite towns. The need for greater emphasis on primary prevention is discussed.
