Book review on leadership and self deception

Since the advent of the AAPM Medical Physics 3.0 Initiative, AAPM has been focused on how physicists can bring additional value to their respective organizations. This could be as simple as new approaches to QA procedures or as complex as expanding greatly beyond our traditional roles in the clinic. As recently highlighted in the Medical Physics Leadership Academy Journal Club, the Arbinger Institute teaches leadership, change management, and conflict resolution among other skills. This meshes well with the MPLA Journal Club mission of teaching Influencing, Conflict Management, Adaptability, Initiative, and Self Confidence. In their seminal book Leadership and Self‐Deception, they teach how to navigate these challenges through a unique narrative format. Other books (Dare to Lead, Smarter Faster Better, Turn the Ship Around) also help teach critical leadership skills, but Leadership and Self‐Deception lays an excellent foundation to be expanded on with further reading and exploration.

NOTAS SOBRE O CONCEITO DE VERDADE

Descrevem-se aqui as teorias tradicionais de verdade, desde aquela por correspondência até a por consenso. O construtivismo é então apresentado como alternativa para as ciências humanas, que apresentam um caráter emancipatório, e isto entra na composição de seu conceito de verdade. No caso da religião, a verdade é mais experiencial, mas a teologia precisa seguir os critérios de verdade das demais ciências. Assim, a crítica dos neo-ateus não se sustenta, pois abordam a religião só em seu conteúdo cognitivo. Eles têm sua razão, no entanto, dada a propensão humana ao engano e ao autoengano (ilusão), os quais, no entanto, se referem a todas as esferas de conhecimento. A teologia também tem de se questionar sobre que tipo de evidências empíricas dispõe para embasar suas afirmações. A pluralidade religiosa (e, portanto, de reivindicações de verdade) surge como problema, mas o entendimento das raízes comuns da religião, fornecido pelas ciências evolutivas, fornece uma base importante para se lidar com o problema. Examining Change in Self-Reported Gambling Measures Over Time as Related to Socially Desirable Responding Bias.

Socially desirable responding is a response bias that can affect the accuracy of self-reports. It is especially likely when questions address sensitive topics, such as gambling attitudes, problems and behaviours. A sample of 321 participants were recruited from Amazon's mTurk crowdsourcing platform for a randomized controlled trial investigating an online gambling intervention. Data from this study was used to examine the influence of socially desirable responding on gambling self-report measures over time. At baseline, self-deception (SD), a factor of socially desirable responding, was significantly higher among males than females and among those with household incomes greater than $20,000 per year. Controlling for demographic variability, mixed effects models examining the relationship between socially desirable responding factors [SD and impression management (IM)] and time were conducted. Among males, there were significant interactions between IM with the NORC DSM-IV screen for gambling problems (NODS) and the gambling symptom assessment scale (G-SAS) scores respectively, over time. In other words, males with higher IM scores, demonstrated less change in NODS and G-SAS scores from baseline to 6-month follow-up compared to males with lower IM scores. There were no significant interactions in any models among females or among the full sample. Controlling the well-documented effect of socially desirable responding on self-reported measures in addictions research should be considered as a method to help reduce error and improve validity. Future research should continue to examine the effect of this bias on gambling measures over time and in each gender.Trial registration: https://ClinicalTrials.gov/NCT03124589 , registered 19 January 2017.

Objektyvacija, principingumas, nuoseklus sąžiningumas yra apsvietos paskatinti krypsmai, kurie ir siandien veikia politinius ir institucinius sprendimus ir visuomenės reguliavimą. Straipsnyje polemiskai analizuojami: a) Hegelio samprotavimai apie apsviestą sąžiningą ir nelaimingą protą, objektyvacijos ribotumą, tarnyste abstraktiems principams, kurie isdėstyti „Dvasios fenomenologijoje“; b) Sartre’o diskusija apie sąžiningą, nuoseklią, principingą saviapgaule ir žmogaus būties kartu su kitais fenomenas, aiskinami kūriniai „Būtis ir Niekis“ ir „Egzistencializmas – tai humanizmas“; c) aptariamas nepamatiskumas kaip egzistencinio apsisprendimo prielaida ir jo sąsajos su politiskumu ir alternatyvų svarstymu. Straipsnyje aptariamas veiklus, integruotas į visuomene ir įgalinantis žmogus, kuris kartu su kitais nuolatos peržengia objektyvizmo ir principingumo suvaržymus, atveria kelią alternatyviam dialogui, diplomatijai ir politiskumui. Straipsnio tikslas yra aktualizuoti sąžiningo proto ir apsviestosios saviapgaulės kritiką, kuri taikoma dabarties objektyvistinėms nuostatoms ir tariamai pakankamai pagrįstiems socialinio konstruktyvizmo sprendimams. Nelle stanze della cultura di massa. La ‘Neue Frau’ Vicki Baum tra memoria, assimilazione ed emancipazione

Following a brief introduction to the existing research on Vicki Baum (1888-1960) and her work, this study examines the importance of assimilation, identity, and self-discovery both in the author’s biography and in her narrative. The analysis of Menschen im Hotel (1929) and Hotel Berlin (1943/44) collocates the fictional conflicts between modernizing inputs and traditional settings, between self-deception and ethical responsibility within the wider field of Baum’s experience as an assimilated Jew first in the Weimar Republic and then, after the so-called voluntary exile, in the U.S. Even though the writer herself was not willing to stress her Jewishness, this article contends that Vicki Baum’s Jewish background and her ability to absorb every cultural ambience are crucial for the understanding of her texts.
