Supramolecular Hydrogel Formation in a Series of Self-Assembling Lipopeptides with Varying Lipid Chain Length.

The self-assembly in aqueous solution of three lipopeptides comprising a bioactive motif conjugated at the N terminus to dodecyl, tetradecyl or hexadecyl lipid chains has been examined. The bioactive motif is the peptide block YEALRVANEVTLN; a C-terminal fragment of the lumican proteoglycan. This study was motivated by our previous studies on the hexadecyl homologue C16-YEALRVANEVTLN, which showed aggregation into β-sheet structures above a critical aggregation concentration (cac), but most remarkably, we found that these aggregates were stable to dilution below the cac.1 Here we find that the C12- and C14-homologues also self-assemble above a cac into β-sheet nanotapes based on bilayer packing. The cac decreases with increasing lipopeptide hydrophobicity. Unexpectedly, the β-sheet secondary structure is present upon dilution and the aggregates are thermally stable. These results indicate that the dilution trapping of β-sheet secondary structure is not associated with lipid chain melting behavior. Instead, we associate it with pH-dependent favorable intermolecular electrostatic interactions. Investigation of the pH-dependence of aggregation led to the discovery of conditions for formation of lipopeptide hydrogels (initial sample preparation at pH 10 in NaOH solution, followed by reduction to pH ∼ 1 by addition of HCl). The lipopeptide hydrogels comprise networks of bilayer-based peptide nanotape bundles and to our knowledge this type of hydrogel is unprecedented. These hydrogels may have future applications based on processes such as encapsulation and release that involve fast switches between solution and hydrogel nanostructures.

Preparation and Cross-Linking of All-Acrylamide Diblock Copolymer Nano-Objects via Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly in Aqueous Solution.

Various carboxylic acid-functionalized poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAC) macromolecular chain transfer agents (macro-CTAs) were chain-extended with diacetone acrylamide (DAAM) by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) aqueous dispersion polymerization at 70 °C and 20% w/w solids to produce a series of PDMAC–PDAAM diblock copolymer nano-objects via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). TEM studies indicate that a PDMAC macro-CTA with a mean degree of polymerization (DP) of 68 or higher results in the formation of well-defined spherical nanoparticles with mean diameters ranging from 40 to 150 nm. In contrast, either highly anisotropic worms or polydisperse vesicles are formed when relatively short macro-CTAs (DP = 40–58) are used. A phase diagram was constructed to enable accurate targeting of pure copolymer morphologies. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and aqueous electrophoresis studies indicated that in most cases these PDMAC–PDAAM nano-objects are surprisingly resistant to changes in either solution pH or temperature. However, PDMAC40–PDAAM99 worms do undergo partial dissociation to form a mixture of relatively short worms and spheres on adjusting the solution pH from pH 2–3 to around pH 9 at 20 °C. Moreover, a change in copolymer morphology from worms to a mixture of short worms and vesicles was observed by DLS and TEM on heating this worm dispersion to 50 °C. Postpolymerization cross-linking of concentrated aqueous dispersions of PDMAC–PDAAM spheres, worms, or vesicles was performed at ambient temperature using adipic acid dihydrazide (ADH), which reacts with the hydrophobic ketone-functionalized PDAAM chains. The formation of hydrazone groups was monitored by FT-IR spectroscopy and afforded covalently stabilized nano-objects that remained intact on exposure to methanol, which is a good solvent for both blocks. Rheological studies indicated that the cross-linked worms formed a stronger gel compared to linear precursor worms.

Effect of Monomer Solubility on the Evolution of Copolymer Morphology during Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly in Aqueous Solution.

Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has become a widely used technique for the rational design of diblock copolymer nano-objects in concentrated aqueous solution. Depending on the specific PISA formulation, reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) aqueous dispersion polymerization typically provides straightforward access to either spheres, worms, or vesicles. In contrast, RAFT aqueous emulsion polymerization formulations often lead to just kinetically-trapped spheres. This limitation is currently not understood, and only a few empirical exceptions have been reported in the literature. In the present work, the effect of monomer solubility on copolymer morphology is explored for an aqueous PISA formulation. Using 2-hydroxybutyl methacrylate (aqueous solubility = 20 g dm–3 at 70 °C) instead of benzyl methacrylate (0.40 g dm–3 at 70 °C) for the core-forming block allows access to an unusual “monkey nut” copolymer morphology over a relatively narrow range of target degrees of polymerization when using a poly(methacrylic acid) RAFT agent at pH 5. These new anisotropic nanoparticles have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, aqueous electrophoresis, shear-induced polarized light imaging (SIPLI), and small-angle X-ray scattering.

Structural, Viscoelastic, and Electrochemical Characteristics of Self-Assembled Amphiphilic Comblike Copolymers in Aqueous Solutions.

Self-assembly in aqueous solutions of an amphiphilic comblike polyelectrolyte (80C12) that consists of a polystyrene (PS) backbone onto which quaternary ammonium pendant moieties have been grafted has been investigated by light scattering and cryo-transmission electron microscopy measurements in the presence of KCl and methylviologen dication (MV2+) under conditions mimicking those for electrochemical measurements. Polymer chains self-assemble within branched cylindrical micelles that display viscoelastic properties, characterized by a relaxation time of 4 s. To tune this time, 80C12 was mixed with a polyoxyethylene nonionic surfactant (Brij C12E10). Relatively increasing the amount of the latter leads to a decrease in the relaxation time of the 80C12 solution. Correlatively, electrochemical experiments with a rotating disk electrode show a transition of the mass transport rate, which deviates from the classical Newtonian behavior in the same velocity domain. This result generalizes what has been already observed with solutions of linear polymers of high molecular weight and wormlike micelles based on surfactants subjected to elongational deformations. Moreover, the critical times derived from rheological and electrochemical experiments display the same trend.

PDMAEMA-b-PLMA-b-POEGMA triblock terpolymers via RAFT polymerization and their self-assembly in aqueous solutions

Novel PDMAEMA-b-PLMA-b-POEGMA triblock terpolymers were synthesized by RAFT polymerization. Triblock polyelectrolytes were obtained by quaternization. PDMAEMA-b-PLMA-b-POEGMA and QPDMAEMA-b-PLMA-b-POEGMA terpolymers self-assemble into spherical micelles with a mixed corona in aqueous media.

Sensitive and Fast Humidity Sensor Based on A Redox Conducting Supramolecular Ionic Material for Respiration Monitoring.

Real-time monitoring of respiratory rate (RR) is highly important for human health, clinical diagnosis, and fundamental scientific research. Exhaled humidity-based RR monitoring has recently attracted increased attention because of its accuracy and portability. Here, we report a new design of an exhaled humidity sensor for the real-time monitoring of the RR based on a synthetic redox conducting supramolecular ionic material (SIM). The humidity-dependent conducting SIM is prepared by ionic self-assembly in aqueous solutions of electroactive 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 1,10-bis(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl) decane (C10(mim)2). By taking full advantage of the high hygroscopicity and water stability arising from the ionic and hydrophobic interactions between two building blocks (i.e., ABTS and C10(mim)2), the SIM-based humidity sensor exhibits both high sensitivity (less than 0.1% relative humidity) and fast response time (∼37 ms). These excellent properties allow this humidity sensor to noninvasively monitor the RRs of not only humans but also rats that have a much faster RR and much smaller tidal volume than humans. Moreover, this sensor could also be efficiently used for the real-time monitoring of the recovery process of rats from anesthesia.

Phenazine-based colorimetric and fluorescent sensor for the selective detection of cyanides based on supramolecular self-assembly in aqueous solution

Taking advantages of both the well-known phenazine structure and the mechanism of the supramolecular self-assembly and deprotonation process, the fluorescent and colorimetric sensor (ZL) was designed and synthesized, behaving as a circulation utilization (above 10 times) receptor for selective detection of cyanide anion (CN−) in aqueous media. Upon the addition of CN−, the sensor displayed obvious color changes from yellow to jacinth by naked eyes and the fluorescence immediately quenched (<10s). With respect to other common anions, the sensor possessed high selectivity and sensitivity (0.05μM) for cyanide anions. In addition, the test strips of ZL were fabricated, which could serve as practical colorimetric and fluorescent sensor for “in-the-field” measurements.

Amphiphilic Diblock Co-polymers Bearing a Cysteine Junction Group: Synthesis, Encapsulation of Inorganic Nanoparticles, and Near-Infrared Photoresponsive Properties.

Encapsulation of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) in the interfaces of amphiphilic vesicles is a challenging task. The traditional strategy is to use amphiphilic triblock co-polymers, which possess two outer blocks for building the walls and coronas of the vesicles, and one middle NP binding block for localizing NPs at the vesicle interfaces. In this manuscript, we describe the design and synthesis of an amphiphilic diblock co-polymer, that is, PEG-SH-b-PS (PEG=poly(ethylene glycol), PS=polystyrene) bearing a cysteine junction with one free pendant thiol group at the center point between the hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) block and the hydrophobic polystyrene block. The amphiphilicity-driven self-assembly in aqueous solution of the pure linear diblock co-polymer PEG-SH-b-PS and the corresponding amphiphilic PEG-SH-b-PS/gold NPs (GNPs) nanocomposites is examined. From TEM observations of the self-assembled samples containing the conjugated GNPs, it can be concluded that most of the GNPs are dispersed at the interfaces of the formed vesicles. In addition, near-infrared (NIR)-absorbing copper monosulfide (CuS) NPs are also encapsulated into the PEG-SH-b-PS vesicles. Due to the photothermal heating effect of the CuS NPs, the corresponding PEG-SH-b-PS/CuSNPs vesicles can disassemble and release the embedded cargos under NIR illumination, which endows this nanocomposite material with potential in biomedical applications, such as cancer imaging, photothermal therapy, and drug delivery.

Thermoresponsive (star) block copolymers from one-pot sequential RAFT polymerizations and their self-assembly in aqueous solution

A series of hydrophobically end-capped linear triblock copolymers as well as of three-arm and four-arm star block copolymers was synthesized in a one-pot procedure from N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) and N,N-diethylacrylamide (DEA). The sequential reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of these monomers via the R-approach using bi-, tri- and tetrafunctional chain transfer agents (CTAs) bearing hydrophobic dodecyl moieties proceeded in a well-controlled manner up to almost quantitative conversion. Polymers with molar masses up to 150 kDa, narrow molar mass distribution (PDI ≤ 1.3) and high end group functionality were obtained, which are thermoresponsive in aqueous solution showing a LCST (lower critical solution temperature) transition. The temperature-dependent associative behavior of the polymers was examined using turbidimetry, static and dynamic light scattering (SLS, DLS), and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) for structural analysis. At 25 °C, the polymers form weak transient networks, and rather small hydrophobic domains are already present for polymer concentrations of 5 wt%. However, when heating above the LCST transition (35–40 °C) of the PDEA blocks, the enhanced formation of hydrophobic domains is observed by means of light and neutron scattering. These domains have a size of about 12–15 nm and must be effectively physically cross-linked as they induce high viscosity for the more concentrated samples. SANS shows that these domains are ordered as evidenced by the appearance of a correlation peak. The copolymer architecture affects in particular the extent of ordering as the four-arm star block copolymer shows much more repulsive interactions compared to the analogous copolymers with a lower number of arms.

Cooperative Self-Assembly of a Quaternary Complex Formed by Two Cucurbit[7]uril Hosts, Cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene), and a "Designer" Guest.

The self-assembly in aqueous solution of the well-known cyclophane, cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (BB(4+) ), and two cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) hosts around a simple hydroquinol-based, diamine guest (GH2 (2+) ) was investigated by (1) H NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopies, electrospray mass spectrometry and DFT computations. The formation of a quaternary supramolecular assembly [GH2 (2+) ⋅BB(4+) ⋅ (CB7)2 ] was shown to be a very efficient process, which takes place not only because of the attractive forces between each of the hosts and the guest, but also because of the lateral interactions between the hosts in the final assembly. This complementary set of attractive interactions results in clear cooperative binding effects that help overcome the entropic barriers for multiple component assembly.

Twisted and tubular silica structures by anionic surfactant fibers encapsulation

Organic molecules imprinting can be used for introducing specific properties and functionalities such as chirality to mesoporous materials. Particularly organic self-assemblies can work as a scaffold for templating inorganic materials such as silica. During recent years chiral imprinting of anionic surfactant for fabrication of twisted rod-like silica structures assisted by co-structuring directing agent were thoroughly investigated. The organic self-assemblies of anionic surfactants can also be used for introducing other shapes in rod-like silica structures. Here we report the formation of amphiphilic N-miristoyl-l-alanine self-assemblies in aqueous solution upon stirring and at presence of l-arginine. These anionic surfactant self-assemblies form fibers that grow by increasing the stirring duration. The fibers were studied using transmission electron microscopy, infra-red spectroscopy and vibrational circular dichroism. Addition of silica precursor 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethylene and co-structuring directing agent N-trimethoxysilylpropyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium chloride at different stages of fibers’ growth leads to formation of different silica structures. By controlling stirring duration, we obtained twisted tubular silica structures as a result of fibers encapsulation. We decorated these structures with gold nanoparticles by different methods and measured their optical activity.

Porphyrin Diacid-Polyelectrolyte Assemblies: Effective Photocatalysts in Solution.

Developing effective and versatile photocatalytic systems is of great potential in solar energy conversion. Here we investigate the formation of supramolecular catalysts by electrostatic self-assembly in aqueous solution: Combining positively charged porphyrins with negatively charged polyelectrolytes leads to nanoscale assemblies where, next to electrostatic interactions, π–π interactions also play an important role. Porphyrin diacid-polyelectrolyte assemblies exhibit a substantially enhanced catalytic activity for the light-driven oxidation of iodide. Aggregates with the hexavalent cationic porphyrin diacids show up to 22 times higher catalytic activity than the corresponding aggregates under neutral conditions. The catalytic activity can be increased by increasing the valency of the porphyrin and by choice of the loading ratio. The structural investigation of the supramolecular catalysts took place via atomic force microscopy and small angle neutron scattering. Hence, a new facile concept for the design of efficient and tunable self-assembled photocatalysts is presented.

Polyvinylferrocene-Based Amphiphilic Block Copolymers Featuring Functional Junction Points for Cross-Linked Micelles

The synthesis of high-molecular-weight, well-defined poly(vinylferrocene)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PVFc-b-PEG) diblock copolymers (Mn = 13 000–44 000 g mol–1; Đ = 1.29–1.34) with precisely one allyl group at the junction point is introduced. Allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) was used to end-functionalize PVFc, resulting in hydroxyl functional macroinitiators for the oxyanionic polymerization of ethylene oxide. The self-assembly behavior of the amphiphilic PVFc-b-PEG copolymers in water has been investigated in a detailed manner, using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The redox activity of the PVFc block was confirmed by UV/vis spectroscopy, while cyclovoltammetry (CV) measurements were carried out to support the stability and full reversibility of the ferrocene/ferrocenium redox couple. Both formation and dissociation of the macromolecular self-assemblies in aqueous solution via oxidation and reduction of the PVFc segments were evidenced by TEM and DLS. The dye Nile Red was used as model compound to investigate the stabilization of a water-insoluble molecule in aqueous solution by the block copolymers via encapsulation inside micellar structures. Oxidation of the PVFc segments lead to instantaneous and quantitative release of the dye. Furthermore, incorporation of the allyl moiety at the block junction point was used to cross-link the shell of the compartments. By this strategy a stable incorporation of the dye was achieved while triggered release via oxidation led to quantitative liberation.

Synthesis of Cationic Amphiphilic Block Copolymers Poly(4-vinylbenzyltriethylammonium chloride)-b-Poly(styrene) and Their Self-Assembly in Aqueous Solution.

Well defined two kinds of cationic amphiphilic block copolymers Poly(4-vinylbenzyltriethylammonium chloride)-b-Poly(styrene) are synthesized by combining reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerizations and post-polymerization quaternization. Block copolymers are characterized by GPC and IHNMR. The self-assembly behaviors of the block copolymers are studied, which are characterized by TEM. For Poly(4-vinylbenzyltriethylammoniurn chloride)13-b-Poly(styrene)136, crew-cut spherical micelles are obtained by using DMF as the initial common solvent, and the majority of the pearl series aggregates and a small-amount of rod-like aggregates are all observed by using the mixture of DMF and THF as the initial common solvent. The formation process of rod-like aggregates is proposed in three steps: the micellization of copolymer chains, the formation of pearl series aggregates from the collision and fusion of individual initial spherical micelles, and the transformation from pearl series aggregates to rod-like aggregates. For Poly(4- vinylbenzyltriethylammonium chloride)18-b-Poly(styrene)370, large compound micelles and complicated spherical aggregates and small vesicles are all,obtained. The formation process of small vesicles is also proposed in three steps: the formation of initial spherical micelles with some hydrophilic block Poly(4-vinylbenzyltriethylammonium chloride) embedded in the core, the removing of the outer layer common solvent, and solvent nucleation in the center. It should be noted that solvent nucleation is critical, because of the hydrophilic block Poly(4-vinylbenzyltriethylammonium chloride) and the common solvent and water embedded in the core of the initial spherical micelles.

Self-Assembly of Telechelic Tyrosine End-Capped PEO and Poly(alanine) Polymers in Aqueous Solution.

The self-assembly in aqueous solution of three novel telechelic conjugates comprising a central hydrophilic polymer and short (trimeric or pentameric) tyrosine end-caps has been investigated. Two of the conjugates have a central poly(oxyethylene) (polyethylene oxide, PEO) central block with different molar masses. The other conjugate has a central poly(L-alanine) (PAla) sequence in a purely amino-acid based conjugate. All three conjugates self-assemble into β-sheet based fibrillar structures, although the fibrillar morphology revealed by cryogenic-TEM is distinct for the three polymers--in particular the Tyr5-PEO6k-Tyr5 forms a population of short straight fibrils in contrast to the more diffuse fibril aggregates observed for Tyr5-PEO2k-Tyr5 and Tyr3-PAla-Tyr3. Hydrogel formation was not observed for these samples (in contrast to prior work on related systems) up to quite high concentrations, showing that it is possible to prepare solutions of peptide-polymer-peptide conjugates with hydrophobic end-caps without conformational constraints associated with hydrogelation. The Tyr5-PEO6k-Tyr5 shows significant PEO crystallization upon drying in contrast to the Tyr5-PEO2k-Tyr5 conjugate. Our findings point to the remarkable ability of short hydrophobic peptide end groups to modulate the self-assembly properties of polymers in solution in model peptide-capped "associative polymers". Retention of fluidity at high conjugate concentration may be valuable in potential future applications of these conjugates as bioresponsive or biocompatible materials, for example exploiting the enzyme-responsiveness of the tyrosine end-groups.

Template-free synthesis of ordered mesoporous carbon: Application as support of highly active Pt nanoparticles for the oxidation of organic fuels

The electrochemical evaluation of Pt nanoparticles deposited on ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), by the polyol method was reported in this work. Their performances were evaluated for methanol, ethanol and ethylene glycol electro-oxidation reaction (MOR, EOR, and EGOR, respectively). The results have been compared with those of a Pt/Vulcan XC-72 catalyst prepared by the same procedure. OMC was synthesized via self-assembly in aqueous solution, as an alternative to other conventional preparation methods. MWCNT were synthesized by the spray pyrolysis technique. The three carbon supports were chemically modified prior to the Pt deposition and the changes on structural properties of OMC and MWCNT due such surface functionalization were characterized. Cyclic voltammetry results demonstrated that Pt/OMC has a lower on-set potential, delivering a higher anodic peak current density for the MOR, EOR and EGOR. Moreover, the jf/jb ratios at Pt/OMC were higher than those determined for Pt/MWCNT and Pt/Vulcan for the anodic reactions. The improvement in catalytic activity has been attributed to the mesoporous structure of OMC, which promoted a greater support–catalysts interaction. The use of OMC enhanced the tolerance to carbonaceous intermediates, thus inhibiting the self-poisoning of Pt nanoparticles. In addition, Pt/OMC exhibited electrochemically active surface area losses after accelerated degradation tests of 12%, a lower value compared with that of Pt/Vulcan (36%).

These micelles, which are generally formulated with amphiphilic block copolymer, allow controlled release of encapsulated drugs[1]. Poly(β-amino ester) (PBAE) is a class of biodegradable polymers that is widely investigated as non-viral vectors for gene and drug delivery[2]. Neutrally charged, hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) molecules can be coated onto a positive surface of nanoparticles to prevent aggregation and clearance from non-specific adsorption of proteins on the surface[3]. In this study, PEG was end-capped to hydrophobic PBAE polymer to provide amphiphilicity, trigger micellar self-assembly in aqueous solution, and promoted particle stability. Materials and Methods: To synthesize PEG-PBAE, acrylate-terminated hydrophobic PBAE was reacted with PEG molecules to produce PEG-PBAE-PEG amphiphilic copolymers. Gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR analysis verified successful PEG end-capping. After micellar self-assembly in aqueous solution, the micelles were characterized by measuring the surface charge by dynamic light scattering, size by nanoparticle tracking analysis, and critical micelle concentration (CMC) by pyrene fluorescence. Micellar morphology and aggregation were visualized by TEM. The cellular uptake and cytotoxicity of doxorubicin (dox)-loaded micelles and blank micelles were evaluated in HUH7 human hepatocellular carcinoma cells using comparable free dox concentration for comparison. Results: PEG-PBAE copolymer was determined to have a CMC of .0155mg/mL. Nanosight data suggests micelle stability due to consistent size in water, PBS, 25%, 50%, and 75% v/v FBS-PBS over 24 h with hydrodynamic diameter of approximately 220 nm. Zeta potential of blank micelles was near neutral at -1.88 mV. Loading efficiency of doxorubicin in PEG-PBAE micelles was determined to be 2.1% by mass. Micelles exhibited 80% cellular uptake in Huh7 cells. Approximately 75% of the cells were killed when exposed to dox-loaded micelles or equivalent concentration of free dox. Conclusions: These results indicate that doxorubicin-loaded micelles can be formulated with a novel PEG-PBAE copolymer. Green and facile synthesis of a theranostic nanoprobe with intrinsic biosafety and targeting abilities.

Traditional targeting nanoprobes suffer from the risks of partial loss of targeting activity and nanoparticle aggregation induced by post-synthetic modifications, ambiguous toxicity, tedious synthesis procedures and environmentally hazardous processes. Herein, we report a green and facile strategy to fabricate transferrin-indocyanine green nanoparticles as a smart theranostic agent with intrinsic biosafety and active targeting abilities for near-infrared fluorescent imaging and photothermal therapy of tumors. Simple mixing of transferrin and indocyanine green enables their self-assembly in aqueous solution to form nanoparticles with excellent water solubility, colloidal stability, favorable biocompatibility and impressive active targeting theranostic effects in vitro and in vivo. The transferrin-indocyanine green nanoparticles show great potential in theranostic applications of tumors in clinical therapy.

Glucose-bearing biodegradable poly(amino acid) and poly(amino acid)-poly(ester) conjugates for controlled payload release.

The glucoseamine-initiated ring-opening polymerisation of amino acid N-carboxyanhydrides and O-carboxanhydrides to yield amphiphilic block copolymers that are capable of self-assembly in aqueous solution to form well-defined, glucose-presenting, particles is reported. The particles formed are susceptible to enzyme-mediated (lipase and protease) and pH-induced degradation, and can selectively bind the lectin concanavalin A. Consequently, such glycoparticles are of significance for the controlled release of payload molecules in response to an acidic environment, for instance cancerous tissue, and upon interaction with target enzymes.

Phase Separated Block Copolymer Particles with Tuneable Morphologies: Striped, Onion, and Patchy Particles

The aqueous solution self-assembly of a series of poly(2-vinyl pyridine)-block-poly(dimethylsiloxane) (P2VP-b-PDMS) diblock copolymers is reported. The particles show a phase separated interior morphology which can be tuned from onion-like sphere to axially stacked lamella with dimensions in the nanoscale. The key to this transition is the control of the interfacial properties using a mixture of two surfactants with preferential wetting to the respective blocks (P2VP or PDMS). Influence of block weights on particle morphology was investigated with results showing that the volume fraction of PDMS plays a crucial role in self-assembly, and a non-conventional structure of a prolate spheroid nanoparticle with a unique phase separated interior morphology can be synthesised.
