Influence of environmental parameters on marine plankton diversity in the southern coastal waters of Korea: Emphasis on thermal stratification

Plankton are fundamental to aquatic ecosystems, forming the base of the marine food web and playing a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. While the impact of environmental factors on marine plankton ecosystems has been widely studied, the seasonal variability in plankton diversity has received comparatively less attention. Here, we investigated the complexity and distribution of plankton species in Korean coastal waters in relation to seasonal environmental changes, particularly those linked to water mass characteristics and the presence of a thermocline, using alpha and beta diversity indices. A thermocline was observed at all stations in July, coinciding with the lowest diversity and richness, but was absent in September, when diversity indices peaked. In the upper layer above the thermocline, diatom species such as Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima and Skeletonema costatum were dominant. Analysis of the Shannon index suggested that planktonic ecosystems in the South Sea of Korea from May to September 2021 were well-balanced. These findings enhance our understanding of the potential effects of environmental variability and thermal stratification on plankton biodiversity and community dynamics in Korean coastal waters.

Intra-tooth isotopic analysis shows seasonal variability in the high-elevation context of Melka Kunture (Upper Awash Valley, Ethiopia) during the Early Pleistocene

In order to investigate seasonal changes in diet, environment and climate, we analyzed the stable carbon and oxygen isotopic composition of intra-tooth sequential profiles (14 teeth, 282 enamel samples) of Hippopotamidae, Equidae, Bovidae and Suidae from Melka Kunture, Upper Awash Valley, central Ethiopian Highlands (2000–2200 m a.s.l.).We found that during the Early Pleistocene, between 1.95 and 1 Ma, most of the analyzed hippos display a seasonally stable C4 diet, even if the δ13C values within hippos show a degree of variability that we interpret as the outcome of feeding on plants that use different C4 photosynthetic pathways. Several hippo specimens display a seasonal shift from C4 to mixed C3-C4 diets. The sampled equid, bovid and suid specimens recorded both stable C4 diets and mixed C3-C4 feeding with a seasonal progressive increase of δ13C values. When affected by seasonal changes, the serially analyzed taxa show different niche partitioning: hippos increase the consumption of C3 vegetation, whereas equids and suids include more C4 vegetation in their diets. The intra-individual δ18O variability in the analyzed taxa is interpreted as the outcome of different water sources, depending on animal habitat, behavior and mobility patterns.Our data are placed in controlled stratigraphic and chronological sequences and combined with the outcome of other proxies, allowing us to evaluate the site paleoecology comprehensively. We suggest that the central Ethiopian Highlands, where MK is located, possibly acted as a refugium-like area during the Early and Middle Pleistocene, characterized by a specific type of montane vegetation (DAF) and diverse faunal and hominin species that demonstrated their resilience and adaptability to changing environments and climates.

The Yangtze River Delta experienced strong seasonality and regular summer upwelling during the warm mid-Holocene

The mid-Holocene climate optimum saw warm temperatures in large parts of China, but its impact on seasonal environmental changes is not fully understood yet. Here, we use high-resolution geochemical analyses of 7000 to 6000 year-old oyster shells from the Yangtze River Delta to reconstruct climatic and oceanographic patterns. The stable isotope (δ18O, δ13C) and clumped isotope data reflect prominent seasonal changes in temperature, precipitation, and river discharge. Summer months experienced warm temperatures and a distinct increase in rainfalls and river discharge. In contrast, winter months were characterized by a dry season, which might have been longer than today. Stable isotope data also indicate regular summer upwelling in the study area. These results partly disagree with available climate models raising doubts on the models’ reliability. Thus, our palaeo-proxy data offers the possibility to evaluate and correct climate models and thereby improve predictions for the future considering on-going global warming.

Dispersal limitation determines the ecological processes that regulate the seasonal assembly of bacterial communities in a subtropical river.

Bacteria play a crucial role in pollutant degradation, biogeochemical cycling, and energy flow within river ecosystems. However, the underlying mechanisms governing bacterial community assembly and their response to environmental factors at seasonal scales in subtropical rivers remain poorly understood. In this study, we conducted 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing on water samples from the Liuxi River to investigate the composition, assembly processes, and co-occurrence relationships of bacterial communities during the wet season and dry season. The results demonstrated that seasonal differences in hydrochemistry significantly influenced the composition of bacterial communities. A more heterogeneous community structure and increased alpha diversity were observed during the dry season. Water temperature emerged as the primary driver for seasonal changes in bacterial communities. Dispersal limitation predominantly governed community assembly, however, during the dry season, its contribution increased due to decreased immigration rates. Co-occurrence network analysis reveals that mutualism played a prevailing role in shaping bacterial community structure. Compared to the wet season, the network of bacterial communities exhibited higher modularity, competition, and keystone species during the dry season, resulting in a more stable community structure. Although keystone species displayed distinct seasonal variations, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were consistently abundant keystone species maintaining network structure in both seasons. Our findings provide insights into how bacterial communities respond to seasonal environmental changes, uncovering underlying mechanisms governing community assembly in subtropical rivers, which are crucial for the effective management and conservation of riverine ecosystems.

Perception of park environment and its impact on aesthetic evaluation

Abstract The synthesis of scientific works highlighted a fundamental difference in the methods and approaches used to investigate the aesthetic qualities of park environments involving respondents. A pivotal methodological question in studying the aesthetic qualities of park environments and their human perception lies in determining the research approach - whether natural or using substitutes such as photographs or virtual simulators. In the context of this study, an analysis was conducted to ascertain the correspondence between the perception of the park environment and the assessment of its aesthetic qualities under different survey conditions. The research established that the influence of park environment features on the aesthetic evaluation of landscapes significantly differs depending on the season and the method of research. Characteristics of the park environment noted by respondents, which are closely related to aesthetic evaluation, are positive associative features defining the overall psycho-emotional impression of the landscape. Seasonal changes in the park environment notably affect the perception of compositional characteristics, especially enhancing aesthetic evaluation during summer surveys conducted directly within the park boundaries. Substantial decrease in aesthetic evaluation is observed due to the mismatch between basic features and respondent preferences, a phenomenon independent of the research method employed.

Wolbachia impacts microbiome diversity and fitness-associated traits for Drosophila melanogaster in a seasonally fluctuating environment.

The microbiome contributes to many different host traits, but its role in host adaptation remains enigmatic. The fitness benefits of the microbiome often depend on ecological conditions, but theory suggests that fluctuations in both the microbiome and environment modulate these fitness benefits. Moreover, vertically transmitted bacteria might constrain the ability of both the microbiome and host to respond to changing environments. Drosophila melanogaster provides an excellent system to investigate the impacts of interactions between the microbiome and the environment. To address this question, we created field mesocosms of D. melanogaster undergoing seasonal environmental change with and without the vertically transmitted bacteria, Wolbachia pipientis. Sampling temporal patterns in the microbiome revealed that Wolbachia constrained microbial diversity. Furthermore, Wolbachia and a dominant member of the microbiome, Commensalibacter, were associated with differences in two higher-order fitness traits, starvation resistance and lifespan. Our work here suggests that the interplay between the abiotic context and microbe-microbe interactions may shape key host phenotypes that underlie adaptation to changing environments. We conclude by exploring the consequences of complex interactions between Wolbachia and the microbiome for our understanding of eco-evolutionary processes that shape host-microbiome interactions.

Understanding the role of temperature in seasonal timing: Effects on behavioural, physiological and molecular phenotypes

AbstractOrganisms adapt to daily and seasonal environmental changes to maximise their metabolic and reproductive fitness. For seasonally breeding animals, photoperiod is considered the most robust cue to drive these changes. It, however, does not explain the interannual variations in different seasonal phenotypes. Several studies have repeatedly shown the influence of ambient temperature on the timing of different seasonal physiologies including the timing of migration, reproduction and its associated behaviours, etc. In the present review, we have discussed the effects of changes in ambient temperature on different seasonal events in endotherms with a focus on migratory birds as they have evolved to draw benefits from distinct but largely predictable seasonal patterns of natural resources. We have further discussed the physiological and molecular mechanisms by which temperature affects seasonal timings. The primary brain area involved in detecting temperature changes is the hypothalamic preoptic area. This area receives thermal inputs via sensory neurons in the peripheral ganglia that measure changes in thermoregulatory tissues such as the skin and spinal cord. For the input signals, several thermal sensory TRP (transient receptor potential ion channels) channels have been identified across different classes of vertebrates. These channels are activated at specific thermal ranges. Once perceived, this information should activate an effector function. However, the link between temperature sensation and the effector pathways is not properly understood yet. Here, we have summarised the available information that may help us understand how temperature information is translated into seasonal timing.

Effects of sublethal methylmercury and food stress on songbird energetic performance: metabolic rates, molt and feather quality.

Organisms regularly adjust their physiology and energy balance in response to predictable seasonal environmental changes. Stressors and contaminants have the potential to disrupt these critical seasonal transitions. No studies have investigated how simultaneous exposure to the ubiquitous toxin methylmercury (MeHg) and food stress affects birds' physiological performance across seasons. We quantified several aspects of energetic performance in song sparrows, Melospiza melodia, exposed or not to unpredictable food stress and MeHg in a 2×2 experimental design, over 3 months during the breeding season, followed by 3 months post-exposure. Birds exposed to food stress had reduced basal metabolic rate and non-significant higher factorial metabolic scope during the exposure period, and had a greater increase in lean mass throughout most of the experimental period. Birds exposed to MeHg had increased molt duration, and increased mass:length ratio of some of their primary feathers. Birds exposed to the combined food stress and MeHg treatment often had responses similar to the stress-only or MeHg-only exposure groups, suggesting these treatments affected physiological performance through different mechanisms and resulted in compensatory or independent effects. Because the MeHg and stress variables were selected in candidate models with a ΔAICc lower than 2 but the 95% confidence interval of these variables overlapped zero, we found weak support for MeHg effects on all measures except basal metabolic rate, and for food stress effects on maximum metabolic rate, factorial metabolic scope and feather mass:length ratio. This suggests that MeHg and food stress effects on these measures are statistically identified but not simple and/or were too weak to be detected via linear regression. Overall, combined exposure to ecologically relevant MeHg and unpredictable food stress during the breeding season does not appear to induce extra energetic costs for songbirds in the post-exposure period. However, MeHg effects on molt duration could carry over across multiple annual cycle stages.

Long-term aquarium records delineate the synchronized spawning strategy of Acropora corals.

Aligning spawning timing with seasonal environmental changes is critical for both terrestrial and aquatic organisms. However, mechanisms to regulate reproductive activity in response to environmental factors are not well understood, partly owing to the technical difficulty in maintaining detailed long-term observational data of the reproductive activities in the same population across years. In this study, we present an application of the aquarium system to examine the long-term spawning properties of corals. Spawning records over a 15-year period at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium revealed that the spawning timing of Acropora corals in aquarium tanks aligned well with that of wild corals from a neighbouring reef. Using the aquarium population as a model, we investigated the relationship between key environmental factors and the timing of the first and peak spawning dates of Acropora corals during a 15-year period. The results suggest that the spawning window of each spawning season is largely influenced by the water temperature and that the timing of peak spawning can be fine-tuned in response to environmental fluctuations. This behavioural feature can prevent synchronous spawning events during unfavourable environmental conditions and increase long-term reproductive reliability.

Seasonal fluctuations in BDNF regulate hibernation and torpor in golden-mantled ground squirrels.

Aphagic hibernators such as the golden-mantled ground squirrel (GMGS; Callospermophilus lateralis) can fast for months and exhibit profound seasonal fluctuations in body weight, food intake, and behavior. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) regulates cellular and systemic metabolism via mechanisms that are conserved across mammalian species. In this study, we characterized regional changes in BDNF with hibernation, hypothermia, and seasonal cycle in GMGS. Analysis of BDNF protein concentrations by ELISA revealed overlapping seasonal patterns in the hippocampus and hypothalamus, where BDNF levels were highest in summer and lowest in winter. BDNF is the primary ligand for receptor tyrosine kinase B (TrkB), and BDNF/TrkB signaling in the brain potently regulates energy expenditure. To examine the functional relevance of seasonal variation in BDNF, hibernating animals were injected with the small molecule TrkB agonist 7,8-dihydroxyflavone (DHF) daily for 2 wk. When compared with vehicle, DHF-treated animals exhibited fewer torpor bouts and shorter bout durations. These results suggest that activating BDNF/TrkB disrupts hibernation and raise intriguing questions related to the role of BDNF as a potential regulatory mechanism or downstream response to seasonal changes in body temperature and environment.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Golden-mantled ground squirrels exhibit dramatic seasonal fluctuations in metabolism and can fast for months while hibernating. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is an essential determinant of cellular and systemic metabolism, and in this study, we characterized seasonal fluctuations in BDNF expression and then administered the small molecule BDNF mimetic 7,8-dihydroxyflavone (DHF) in hibernating squirrels. The results indicate that activating BDNF/TrkB signaling disrupts hibernation, with implications for synaptic homeostasis in prolonged hypometabolic states.

Influence of hydraulic clam dredging and seasonal environmental changes on macro-benthic communities in the Southern Adriatic (Central Mediterranean Sea)

Macro-benthic communities on the shallowest soft bottoms are impacted by hydraulic dredgers used for the harvesting of the striped venus clam (Chamelea gallina). Changes in macro-benthic assemblages were analysed across four areas in the Southern Adriatic Sea (Central Mediterranean Sea) during the winter and summer 2022 (low and high fishing pressures, respectively). Two sampling surveys were carried out collecting abundance data (N/100m2) of 69 species. Diversity indices (Shannon–Weiner and Equitability) were calculated and differences between seasons and areas were tested using non-parametric tests. Changes in the assemblage and feeding habits were explored by adopting permutational multivariate analysis of variance on 34 species. Moreover, environmental conditions of all areas in the two seasons were characterized by a set of 8 variables. Seasonal changes in diversity were only detected for the Shannon–Weiner index, with values significantly higher in winter than summer. Macro-benthic assemblages differed between the two seasons, and the winter assemblages were well-distinct in each area. In contrast, a high overlap was shown in the summer assemblages of the four areas. Changes in feeding habits showed an increase in filter feeding polychaetes and opportunistic/scavenger species during the summer. Temperature, Salinity and primary production were positively correlated to summer stations indicating potential thermic stress on the assemblages. The results provide information on the benthic community impacted by dredge disturbance and seasonal changes driven by environmental conditions, stressing the need to integrate these aspects in assessments on the health status of marine ecosystems required by European directives and fishery management plans.

Rapid seasonal changes in phenotypes in a wild Drosophila population

Seasonal environmental change is one of the most rapid and striking environmental variables. Although relatively rapid adaptation to environmental changes over several years or several decades has been described in many taxa, rapid responses to seasonal environments are delicate, and therefore, the detection of the evolutionary responses requires sensitive methods. In this study, we examined seasonal changes in phenotypes related to thermal tolerance and morphological traits of Drosophila lutescens collected at the spring and autumn periods from a single location. We first demonstrated that flies in the two seasonal periods were almost genetically identical using double-digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing and analysis. Using an experimental design to eliminate the effect of possible confounding factors that influence phenotypes (i.e., maternal effects and the environmental conditions in which each phenotype was analyzed), we showed that the heat tolerance of D. lutescens was significantly higher in the autumn population than in the spring population. Furthermore, cold tolerance was slightly higher in the spring population than in the autumn one. Although wing length and thorax length did not change significantly between seasons, the ratio of wing length to thorax length changed significantly between them. These results suggest that seasonal environmental heterogeneity induces rapid phenotypic changes within a year. Finally, we discuss the possibility of rapid evolutionary responses to seasonal changes.

A transcriptional program underlying the circannual rhythms of gonadal development in medaka.

To cope with seasonal environmental changes, organisms have evolved approximately 1-y endogenous circannual clocks. These circannual clocks regulate various physiological properties and behaviors such as reproduction, hibernation, migration, and molting, thus providing organisms with adaptive advantages. Although several hypotheses have been proposed, the genes that regulate circannual rhythms and the underlying mechanisms controlling long-term circannual clocks remain unknown in any organism. Here, we show a transcriptional program underlying the circannual clock in medaka fish (Oryzias latipes). We monitored the seasonal reproductive rhythms of medaka kept under natural outdoor conditions for 2 y. Linear regression analysis suggested that seasonal changes in reproductive activity were predominantly determined by an endogenous program. Medaka hypothalamic and pituitary transcriptomes were obtained monthly over 2 y and daily on all equinoxes and solstices. Analysis identified 3,341 seasonally oscillating genes and 1,381 daily oscillating genes. We then examined the existence of circannual rhythms in medaka via maintaining them under constant photoperiodic conditions. Medaka exhibited approximately 6-mo free-running circannual rhythms under constant conditions, and monthly transcriptomes under constant conditions identified 518 circannual genes. Gene ontology analysis of circannual genes highlighted the enrichment of genes related to cell proliferation and differentiation. Altogether, our findings support the "histogenesis hypothesis" that postulates the involvement of tissue remodeling in circannual time-keeping.

Seasonal dynamics in the mammalian microbiome between disparate environments.

Host-associated bacterial microbiomes can facilitate host acclimation to seasonal environmental change and are hypothesized to help hosts cope with recent anthropogenic environmental perturbations (e.g., landscape modification). However, it is unclear how recurrent and recent forms of environmental change interact to shape variation in the microbiome. The majority of wildlife microbiome research occurs within a single seasonal context. Meanwhile, the few studies of seasonal variation in the microbiome often restrict focus to a single environmental context. By sampling urban and exurban eastern grey squirrel populations in the spring, summer, autumn, and winter, we explored whether seasonal rhythms in the grey squirrel gut microbiome differed across environments using a 16S amplicon sequencing approach. Differences in the microbiome between urban and exurban squirrels persisted across most of the year, which we hypothesize is linked to anthropogenic food consumption, but we also observed similarities in the urban and exurban grey squirrel microbiome during the autumn, which we attribute to engrained seed caching instincts in preparation for the winter. Host behaviour and diet selection may therefore be capable of maintaining similarities in microbiome structure between disparate environments. However, the depletion of an obligate host mucin glycan specialist (Akkermansia) during the winter in both urban and exurban squirrels was among the strongest differential abundance patterns we observed. In summary, urban grey squirrels showed different seasonal patterns in their microbiome than squirrels from exurban forests; however, in some instances, host behaviour and physiological responses might be capable of maintaining similar microbiome responses across seasons.

Seasonal Effects on the Fecal Microbial Composition of Wild Greater Thick-Tailed Galagos (Otolemur crassicaudatus)

AbstractBacterial communities present in the host digestive tract are important for the breakdown and absorption of nutrients required by the host. Changes in diet and the environment are major factors affecting the composition and diversity of the fecal microbiome. In addition to changes in ambient temperature and rainfall, primates living in seasonal temperate environments also need to adapt to seasonal changes in food resource quantity and quality. However, there is a lack of information about the fecal microbiome in African strepsirrhines relative to other primate taxa. We examined the effects of seasonal dietary and environmental changes on fecal microbial alpha diversity and composition in wild greater thick-tailed galagos (Otolemur crassicaudatus) at Lajuma Research Centre, South Africa. We collected fecal samples and assessed food availability and weather in summer and winter across 1 year and used 16S rRNA next-generation sequencing to characterise the fecal microbiome of 49 animals. We found significant increases in rainfall, ambient temperature, and food availability in summer compared with winter. However, we found no significant changes in body mass or in the overall diversity of bacterial species present in fecal samples between the two seasons. We found significant decreases in the abundance of certain bacterial families in winter, suggesting a change in diet. Our findings suggest that greater thick-tailed galagos can find food resources to maintain their body mass throughout the year. Our insights into the seasonal fecal microbiome of greater thick-tailed galagos add to the growing knowledge and understanding of fecal microbiomes in primates and how they help primates cope with changes to their environments.

Root and Microbial Soil CO2 and CH4 Fluxes Respond Differently to Seasonal and Episodic Environmental Changes in a Temperate Forest

AbstractUpland forest soils are typically major atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) sources and methane (CH4) sinks, but the contributions of root and microbial processes, as well as their separate temporal responses to environmental change, remain poorly understood. This 2‐year study was conducted in a temperate, deciduous forest located on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, USA. We used temporal CO2 and CH4 flux measurements, exclusion‐source partitioning, and an ecosystem‐scale flooding experiment to understand how carbon (C) fluxes, and their root and microbial sources, respond to seasonal and episodic environmental change. We show that the root‐and‐rhizosphere component of soil CO2 and CH4 flux is significant and that its dependence on soil temperature and volumetric water content (VWC) influences soil C dynamics at seasonal timescales. Experimental flooding shows that CO2 and CH4 flux responses to episodic moisture change were driven by suppression of soil heterotrophs, while root respiration did not respond to transient hydrologic disturbance. Methane uptake responded strongly to episodic inundation, reinforcing the important role of soil moisture in the short‐term control of the forest soil CH4 sink. However, despite the clear seasonality of CH4 uptake, as well as its strong response to short‐term experimental inundation, temperature and VWC were weak predictors of CH4 uptake at a seasonal timescale. We suggest that CH4 consumption in the long‐term may be determined by vegetation, nutrients, microbial communities, or other factors correlated with seasonal changes. Our results indicate that root and microbial sources of both CO2 and CH4 flux respond differently in timing and magnitude to seasonal and episodic environmental change.

The fossil bivalveAngulus benedeni benedeni: a potential seasonally resolved stable-isotope-based climate archive to investigate Pliocene temperatures in the southern North Sea basin

Abstract. Bivalves record seasonal environmental changes in their shells, making them excellent climate archives. However, not every bivalve can be used for this end. The shells have to grow fast enough so that micrometre- to millimetre-sampling can resolve sub-annual changes. Here, we investigate whether the bivalve Angulus benedeni benedeni is suitable as a climate archive. For this, we use ca. 3-million-year-old specimens from the Piacenzian collected from a temporary outcrop in the Port of Antwerp area (Belgium). The subspecies is common in Pliocene North Sea basin deposits, but its lineage dates back to the late Oligocene and has therefore great potential as a high-resolution archive. A detailed assessment of the preservation of the shell material by micro-X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and electron backscatter diffraction reveals that it is pristine and not affected by diagenetic processes. Oxygen isotope analysis and microscopy indicate that the species had a longevity of up to a decade or more and, importantly, that it grew fast and large enough so that seasonally resolved records across multiple years were obtainable from it. Clumped isotope analysis revealed a mean annual temperature of 13.5 ± 3.8 ∘C. The subspecies likely experienced slower growth during winter and thus may not have recorded temperatures year-round. This reconstructed mean annual temperature is 3.5 ∘C warmer than the pre-industrial North Sea and in line with proxy and modelling data for this stratigraphic interval, further solidifying A. benedeni benedeni's use as a climate recorder. Our exploratory study thus reveals that Angulus benedeni benedeni fossils are indeed excellent climate archives, holding the potential to provide insight into the seasonality of several major climate events of the past ∼ 25 million years in northwestern Europe.

Frequent pulse disturbances shape resistance and resilience in tropical marine microbial communities

The Johor Strait separates the island of Singapore from Peninsular Malaysia. A 1-kilometer causeway built in the early 1920s in the middle of the strait effectively blocks water flowing to/from either side, resulting in low water turnover rates and build-up of nutrients in the inner Strait. We have previously shown that short-term rather than seasonal environmental changes influence microbial community composition in the Johor Strait. Here, we present a temporally-intensive study that uncovers the factors keeping the microbial populations in check. We sampled the surface water at four sites in the inner Eastern Johor Strait every other day for two months, while measuring various water quality parameters, and analysed 16S amplicon sequences and flow-cytometric counts. We discovered that microbial community succession revolves around a common stable state resulting from frequent pulse disturbances. Among these, sporadic riverine freshwater input and regular tidal currents influence bottom-up controls including the availability of the limiting nutrient nitrogen and its biological release in readily available forms. From the top-down, marine viruses and predatory bacteria limit the proliferation of microbes in the water. Harmful algal blooms, which have been observed historically in these waters, may occur only when there are simultaneous gaps in the top-down and bottom-up controls. This study gains insight into complex interactions between multiple factors contributing to a low-resistance but high-resilience microbial community and speculate about rare events that could lead to the occurrence of an algal bloom.

Genotype-specific variation in seasonal body condition at a large-effect maturation locus.

Organisms use resource allocation strategies to survive seasonal environmental changes and life-history stage transitions. Earlier studies found a transcription cofactor, vgll3, associating with maturation timing that inhibits adipogenesis in mice and affects body condition in juvenile salmon. Owing to a lack of temporal studies examining seasonality effects on phenotypes such as vgll3 genotype, body condition, maturation and different life stages, we investigated the influence of different larval and juvenile temperatures, vgll3 genotype and interactions with body condition and maturation rate. We reared Atlantic salmon for 2 years in four larval-juvenile phase temperature groups until the occurrence of mature males. We found no effect of larval temperature on the measured phenotypes or maturation rate. However, we observed an increased maturation rate in individuals of the warm juvenile temperature treatment and differences in body condition associated with vgll3 genotype. Early maturation genotype individuals had a less variable body condition across seasons compared with late maturation genotype individuals. This result suggests a vgll3 influence on resource allocation strategies; possibly linked with the early maturation process, with early maturation genotype individuals having a higher maturation rate and a higher body condition in the spring.

Context drives movement patterns in a mobile marine predator

Intra-specific variability in movement behaviour occurs in all major taxonomic groups. Despite its common occurrence and ecological consequences, individual variability is often overlooked. As a result, there is a persistent gap in knowledge about drivers of intra-specific variability in movement and its role in fulfilling life history requirements. We apply a context-focused approach to bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas), a highly mobile marine predator, incorporating intra-specific variability to understand how variable movement patterns arise and how they might be altered under future change scenarios. Spatial analysis of sharks, acoustically tagged both at their distributional limit and the centre of distribution in southern Africa, was combined with spatial analysis of acoustically tagged teleost prey and remote-sensing of environmental variables. The objective was to test the hypothesis that varying resource availability and magnitude of seasonal environmental change in different locations interact to produce variable yet predictable movement behaviours across a species’ distribution. Sharks from both locations showed high seasonal overlap with predictable prey aggregations. Patterns were variable in the centre of distribution, where residency, small- and large-scale movements were all recorded. In contrast, all animals from the distributional limit performed ‘leap-frog migrations’, making long-distance migrations bypassing conspecifics in the centre of distribution. By combining multiple variables related to life history requirements for animals in different environments we identified combinations of key drivers that explain the occurrence of differing movement behaviours across different contexts and delineated the effects of environmental factors and prey dynamics on predator movement. Comparisons with other taxa show striking similarities in patterns of intra-specific variability across terrestrial and marine species, suggesting common drivers.
