Jabs or Societal Restrictions? Public Preferences for Vaccination Programmes in South Africa
  • Mar 1, 2026
  • Health Policy and Technology
  • Aregawi G Gebremariam + 6 more

• Vaccines with higher effectiveness and longer protection were preferred • Risk of side effects significantly reduced vaccine acceptance likelihood • Vaccines from the US, UK, and EU were preferred over Chinese and Russian ones • Two latent classes identified: pro-vaccine and vaccine-resistant groups • Trust, attitudes, and prior experience derived class membership The objective of this study was to quantify public preferences for alternative vaccination programme strategies, combining vaccine attributes and policy measures, that could be deployed in future outbreaks similar to COVID-19 in South Africa. A discrete choice experiment (DCE) was conducted among 3,002 South African respondents. Attributes included vaccine effectiveness, duration of protection, side-effect risk, vaccine origin, approval time, and social restrictions including stringency of restrictions and vaccine mandate. Multinomial Logit (MNL) and Latent Class (LC) models were estimated to explore preferences. Vaccines with higher effectiveness were consistently preferred by South African respondents. Similarly, vaccines offering longer immunity durations and those approved after longer evaluation periods were preferred. Vaccines originating from the EU, UK, and US were preferred over those from China. In contrast, vaccines associated with higher risks of severe side effects were significantly less preferred. A latent class model identified two distinct groups: a majority (68.3%) classified as “provaccine,” who demonstrated strong preference for vaccination, often driven by trust in institutions and positive vaccine attitudes; and a minority (31.7%) categorised as “vaccine-resistant” who exhibited reluctance towards vaccination, likely driven by lower institutional trust, negative vaccine attitudes, and reduced health risk aversion. COVID19 vaccine preferences in South Africa were strongly influenced by perceived effectiveness, approval time, origin of the vaccine, duration of protection, risks of side effects, social restrictions and vaccine mandates. Respondents exhibited diverse preference patterns, and public health strategies should be designed to reflect these differences. Understanding how people make decisions about vaccines can help improve public health communication and planning. This research used a method that asked South Africans to imagine different vaccine scenarios and choose which ones they would prefer. People preferred vaccines that were highly effective, lasted longer, and had fewer side effects. Vaccines made in Western countries like the US, UK, and EU were preferred over those from China or Russia. Importantly, not everyone thinks about vaccines the same way. We found two main groups: one willing to vaccinate, trusting institutions and prioritising community health, and another prioritising individual rights, and not willing to vaccinate. By recognizing and addressing the diverse values that influence decision-making, public health initiatives can better support informed choices and strengthen community engagement during future outbreaks.

Studying the school mathematics course based on the competence approach
  • Feb 28, 2026
  • Science for Education Today
  • Akryam Zhafyarovich Zhafyarov

Introduction. The article discusses the problem of improving the quality of mathematical education in secondary schools. The purpose of the study is to build school mathematics course based on the competence approach developed and refined by the author, to demonstrate what has been said using the example of the first three basic competencies of the ‘Divisibility of integers’ topic. Materials and Methods. The basis of the methodology is the integration of the author’s consistent theory and technology about the competence approach and long-term practice in teaching this topic. Results. Many students trained using this technology have become worthy citizens of Russia, doctors of sciences and professors. The expediency of choosing this topic is due to the following circumstances: it causes great difficulties for teachers (not only Russian ones), students of pedagogical universities and, as a result, for high school students who lose points on the Unified State Exam; there are almost no textbooks capable of solving this problem. Conclusions. The introduction of a competence-based approach into the process of studying school mathematics will help improve the quality of mathematical education and personal development of students, thereby contributing to preparing future professionals to solve the significant problem posed by the President of the country: to develop the Russian economy ahead of the foreign ones.

VIOLATION OF GRICE’S COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLE AS A MEANS OF CREATING MANIPULATION IN ADVERTISING TEXTS (BASED ON ARMENIAN, RUSSIAN, AND ENGLISH ADVERTISING TEXTS)
  • Dec 30, 2025
  • ALTERNATIVE
  • Spartak Mkhitaryan

The article investigates the violations of P. Grice's Cooperative Principle as a linguistic mechanism for creating a manipulative effect in advertising texts. Based on a corpus of 600 advertisements in Armenian, Russian, and English, the analysis examines how the deliberate breaking of the Maxims of Quality, Quantity, Manner, and Relation serves to conceal negative information, embellish the product's image, and exert a covert influence on the consumer. The results indicate that the Maxims of Quality and Quantity are the most frequently violated. Cross-cultural analysis reveals a commonality of manipulative strategies across different linguacultures, with Armenian and English texts tending to exhibit more violations than Russian ones.

In the context of sanctions pressure, a search for ways to substitute imported materials and technologies with Russian ones is underway. This trend is typical of all industries, including import substitution in the field of medicine, pharmacy, and the production of cosmetics, oils, and consumables. In this regard, an important role is played by assessing the capabilities of Russian manufacturers to replace raw materials from foreign producers – Germany, Turkey, and other countries. It is crucial for this process to occur without loss of quality of the final product. Our study is devoted to the evaluation of white oils from Russia's largest petrochemical manufacturer for the production of cosmetic products, as well as their widespread use not only in dermatology but also in various medical procedures. Objective methods of skin moisture analyzer control were utilized to assess the effectiveness of the tested samples, making it possible to record skin indicators such as fat content, hydration, and softness. During the testing of the prototypes, a database with multiple measurements of each subject was obtained. The resulting database was subjected to statistical processing by regression and correlation analysis. The survey assessed the potential demand for innovative products and the economic feasibility of the project.

A comparative analysis of the transformation parameters of the BDCS and PZ-90.11 reference frames orbital realizations, broadcasted by the global navigation satellite systems BDS (China) and GLONASS (Russia), respectively, with International Terrestrial Reference Frame was performed. Helmert parameters were calculated for the period between January 1 and December 31, 2020 for each day independently by the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory and by the Central Research Institute for Machine Building. Comparison results showed good agreement between two series of BDCS and ITRF transformation parameters estimates. For PZ-90.11 and ITRF the agreement was slightly worse since the estimates based on the Chinese data were almost 2 times more optimistic than the Russian ones. Using two independent Helmert parameters sets, the coincidence parameters for reference frames relative to ITRF were calculated. The comparison of two series of coincidence parameters estimates for 150 days calculated for BDCS and ITRF is characterized by a correlation coefficient of 0,98 and by mutual standard deviation of 1,0 cm; for PZ-90.11 and ITRF, the correlation coefficient was 0,51 and the standard deviation was 8,4 cm

Creative Labour as a Victory Factor: Theatre and Other Arts in the Wartime USSR
  • Sep 30, 2025
  • Vestnik instituta sotziologii
  • Natalya Levchenko

This article examines the formation and mainstreaming of creative labour in Soviet society. Because the Soviet cultural revolution did not completely destroy the old foundations of society, but rather transformed them into a new form, Soviet culture was not rebuilt anew; it preserved the past while adding new, original features. One of the elements of this innovation was the development of a different attitude toward labour than the traditional one. From the very first years of Soviet power, efforts were made to liberate society from all forms of alienation, including alienation from labour. Characteristic features were the cultivation of enthusiasm, camaraderie, and the development of social labour. As a result, labour (physical or artistic) began to be perceived as a creative process. A striking example of this, in our opinion, is the activities of theatre groups during the Great Patriotic War. During the Soviet era, theatre is viewed, on the one hand, as a sociocultural institution, one of the primary transmitters of the cultural and social values of the multiethnic Soviet society, whether traditional Russian ones or newly emerging. On the other hand, it is viewed as a collective action, where artists inspired others with their personal example of labour and the fight against invaders. During the war, theatre repertoires primarily included military themes, but productions not only demonstrated the tragedy of those years but also the significance of labour exploits. Frontline theaters and brigades were established, and theatrical companies actively toured not only to remote settlements but also to the front lines. This article demonstrates that theatre art embodied the propaganda of the just nature of the war, strengthening friendship between peoples, and loyalty to socialist ideas. It illustrates the unifying significance and role of regional theatre figures in calling for labour exploits, fostering patriotic sentiments, and consolidating multiethnic Soviet society. The author concludes that during the Soviet years, an attitude toward labour as a creative process developed, regardless of whether it was physical or intellectual, in an artist's studio or on a theatre stage. The importance of this perception of labour was clearly demonstrated during the Great Patriotic War. Using the work of theatre companies as an example, it was revealed that both the theatre workers themselves and the products of their work demonstrated the need for labour exploits, social and military service.

  • Ningxuan Li

The research aims to provide an overview of the possibilities and methods of using multimedia and digital technologies in calligraphy training in the context of teaching Chinese as a foreign language to students receiving non-philological education in universities, including Russian ones. The article addresses the following tasks: an optimized model for teaching calligraphy using these technologies is given; the general principles and stages of training within the proposed model are considered; an analysis of the possibilities of using mobile applications for online calligraphy training is carried out. The scientific novelty of the research lies in developing an innovative model for teaching calligraphy in the field of using mobile applications in calligraphy training. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that technology plays a crucial role in recognizing characters and their structure, order, and sequence of strokes, in building associations between the phonetic, semantic, and orthographic components of Chinese characters. Mobile technologies not only allow learners to study Chinese characters but also make this process more personalized, interactive, and communication-oriented. The proposed model for teaching Chinese calligraphy solves the main problem faced by students at the initial stage, allowing them to effectively build connections between the “pronunciation” of the character, including the combination of sounds (initials and finals) and tone, and the meaning, form, and structure of the character. According to the model, students can be engaged not only during classroom activities but also outside the classroom.

Cultural resilience under digital technology: Innovative expression and inheritance of Chinese and Russian traditional culture in social media
  • Jul 24, 2025
  • Journal of Computational Methods in Sciences and Engineering
  • Yaxuan Zhao

The current inquiry maps the digital resilience tactics embedded in China’s and Russia’s customary cultures as they circulate across social media. Mixed-methods scrutiny of roughly 2400 posts drawn from eight service providers forms the evidential core of the project. China’s social environments lean heavily towards visual artistry—more than 42% of the data, by one estimate—and produce formal novelties at an impressive 63% clip. Russian spaces, in contrast, foreground century-old stories, with nearly 41% of the corpus devoted to such materials, and score 54% on an informal semantic-adaptation metric. Hybrid cultural mixes are on the rise: China’s proportion jumped from 42 to 69% between 2020 and early 2024, while Russia’s climbed from 38 to just over 52% in the same window. Content rooted in tradition outlasts its contemporary cousins by a wide margin, attracting average user attention for just over 7 days in Chinese streams and for roughly 9 days in Russian ones; the shorter lifespan of modern posts hovers around 3 days in both contexts. Engagement styles diverge, too: Chinese users tend to share posts at a 39% rate, whereas Russian cohorts favor commenting, which they do at close to 43%. Taken together, the observations chart culturally specific pathways of digital adaptation that preserve core identities and introduce a Cultural Resilience Index as a new methodological benchmark.

The aboriginal population of the Far East in the Russian-Japanese trade in the 18th – 19th centuries (based on pre-revolutionary sources)
  • Jul 17, 2025
  • Japanese Studies in Russia
  • V N Shkunov

The article is devoted to the definition of the role and importance of the participation of the indigenous peoples of the Far East in the formation and development of Russian-Japanese trade during the 18th – 19th centuries. The traditional crafts of the aborigines of the Far Eastern Territory were of undoubted interest to Russian entrepreneurs who sought to expand trade relations with neighboring Japan. Before the conclusion of the Treaty of Shimoda in 1855, Russian merchants in need of certain goods resorted to the intermediary services of the Ainu, who exchanged Japanese goods for Russian ones. The article provides concrete facts about the indirect participation of the aborigines of the Far East in Russian-Japanese trade, information about goods, prices, supply channels, etc. It notes the changes in the life of the aboriginal population under the influence of barter trade, their transition to settled life, borrowing of traditions of everyday life from Russians, and their reorientation to new occupations, influenced by the needs of foreign trade. In particular, it discusses the specific features of traditional occupations of the aborigines of the Far East: the Taz, the Negidals, the Oroks, the Nivkh, the Gilyaks, the Tungus, the Goldi, the Orochen, etc., as well as ways of their involvement in barter trade and realization of products of traditional crafts in the Japanese market. The article specifically focuses on the participation of the Ainu subjects of Japan and the Russian Empire in Russian-Japanese trade, notes the peculiarities of the attitude of Russian and Japanese authorities to the Ainu, their interaction with Russian entrepreneurs. It also notes the participation of Koreans and the Chinese residing in the Russian Far East in Russian-Japanese trade. The article emphasizes the importance of Russian entrepreneurs’ selling furs, fish, seafoods, seaweed, ginseng, marine mammals products obtained through barter trade from the Far Eastern aborigines in the Japanese market. It analyzes the bilateral international trade treaties between the Russian Empire and Japan in the studied period. The article uses rare pre-revolutionary archival documents, as well as sources in Russian, English, French, Spanish, and German.

Determination of diamondiferous placer primary sources by the ratio of nitrogen traces and carbon isotope composition in South African diamonds
  • Jul 7, 2025
  • Regional Geology and Metallogeny
  • O N Malykh

South Africa locates both primary sources of diamonds (kimberlite pipes) and the pipe washout induced placers. Notably, the range of the region’s placers is incredibly wide: from alluvial to coastal-marine, marine, and wind-formed. In the paper, the author attempted to analyze nitrogen traces content and carbon isotope composition in the region’s diamonds to develop a new method for determining primary sources of the region’s placer diamonds. Although researchers (both foreign and Russian ones) characterized the diamond properties, they did not analyze connections between placer diamonds and pipes, using these parameters. The current paper is novel in this respect. This method of comparing placer diamonds and their sources requires further development by applying a wider data range both for this region and verifying it on primary and placer diamond sites in other regions.

Diasporans’ Emotional Attitudes toward Foodways
  • Jul 3, 2025
  • Scando-Slavica
  • Ekaterina Protassova + 1 more

ABSTRACT In immigrant communities, food often carries significant emotional weight, symbolizing a connection to home, family, and identity. As immigrants settle into new countries, familiar dishes serve as comforting reminders of their roots, evoking memories of loved ones, celebrations, and daily life in their homeland. For many, cooking and sharing traditional foods offer solace and continuity in an environment where they may feel culturally isolated. In this way, food becomes not just sustenance but a vessel for preserving language, customs, and stories that might otherwise fade away over generations. In a number of case studies, we elicited specificity of the Russophone immigrants’ attitudes toward ‘Russian’ cuisine. Russophone immigrants who arrived in the USA and Germany about 30 years ago were thrilled with simple products, often sending them back to relatives in Russia and Ukraine. Over time, their tastes evolved, and they began seeking out more sophisticated options and adopted fusion culinary. They shop for specific items in various stores, not only Russian ones, and have integrated local and international flavors into their diets, reflecting a blend of their origins and new surroundings. Despite adapting to new culinary landscapes, they maintain strong ties to their cultural food traditions, often seeking out specific food products indispensable for making their favorite dishes. A person who stays in Turkey for 20 years exemplifies the dual process of culinary adaptation and resistance in migration. Second-generation Russophone diasporans are not nostalgic but have some preferences in what concerns Russian products. The study reveals that culinary nostalgia functions as both an emotional and symbolic bridge, enabling Russophone immigrants to preserve cultural identity while adapting to new environments. By analyzing food talk, it shows how native/heritage-language discourse around food mediates belonging, resilience, and the blending of old and new culinary traditions across transnational contexts.

Антропонимы и соматизмы в русских и чувашских загадках: пересечение кодов культуры
  • Jun 27, 2025
  • Philology. Issues of Theory and Practice
  • Tatiana Vitalievna Denisova + 1 more

The aim of the research is to identify the features of representing the surrounding world in riddles through anthroponyms and somatisms in the Russian and Chuvash linguistic worldviews. In particular, the article focuses on such somatisms as "head" (Chuvash "пуç"); "eyes" (Chuvash "куç"), partially "mouth" (Chuvash "çăвар"), "thigh" (Chuvash "пĕçĕ"), etc. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that Chuvash riddles (against the background of Russian ones) are considered in this aspect for the first time, which makes it possible to identify cultural nuances in the modeling of the surrounding reality, reflected in the oldest folklore material. As a result of the study, it was established that in riddles the interpretation of objects of the surrounding reality, marked as "alien", when using the names of people and their body parts, moves from the zone of undeveloped to "one's own", close to a person, and becomes cognizable. Somatisms are thus either indicators of the space "top – bottom", "inside – outside" when comprehending household items, or the objects/phenomena themselves when reflecting natural phenomena.

Increasing Time for Preparing a Candidate’s Dissertation and ‘Ageing’ of Young Scientists
  • May 15, 2025
  • Vysshee Obrazovanie v Rossii = Higher Education in Russia
  • S I Pakhomov + 2 more

Many researchers note the existence of systemic problems in the training of highly qualified scientific personnel, in particular candidates of science. Statistical data indicate a decrease in the effectiveness of training, a reduction in the number of candidate dissertation defenses. The study used data from the annual reports of dissertation councils for 2012–2023. One of the problematic aspects of the postgraduate training system is the period of preparation of a candidate dissertation from admission to postgraduate school to the defense of the dissertation, which has increased to 6-7 years in recent years. Almost three quarters of annual defenses are defenses delayed after the completion of postgraduate school by a year or more. An increase in the time for dissertation preparation entails a decrease in the number of young candidates and doctors of science. Foreign postgraduate students, compared to Russian ones, try to defend their dissertations earlier. The study considered the hypothesis that the reason for delays in defending a dissertation may be the need to meet the requirement for the number of publications. The hypothesis was not confirmed. Most applicants for the degree of candidate of sciences begin their defense with the number of publications exceeding the minimum regulatory requirements. The authors suggest that the delay in preparing the dissertation is due to the lack of financial security for scientific research and suggest paying attention to the introduction of industrial postgraduate studies. On the other hand, in order to provide a postgraduate student with a longer period for preparing a dissertation, it is possible to start the dissertation research not from the moment of admission to postgraduate studies, but earlier – in themaster’s program. This requires advance (2-3 years earlier) planning of the target figures for admission to postgraduate studies.

Legal custom in civil law of the Second Polish Republic
  • Mar 1, 2025
  • Analytical and Comparative Jurisprudence
  • N.G Zakharchyn

The paper inspects the role of a custom in civil law of interwar (1918-1939) Poland. It notes that the unification of national legislation took place in the Second Polish Republic, including the field of civil law. The codification that had been launched faced significant difficulties, as in different regions of restored Poland different legislation systems had functioned previously (Austrian, German, Russian ones). Due to objective reasons, legislators had not managed to finalize their own Civil Code until the outbreak of World War II. Nonetheless, different branches of civil law adopted several regulatory acts aiming to harmonize the existing differences in the civil legal relations of a single state. The important documents in civil law were The Code of Obligations of 1933 and the Trade Code of 1934. The paper analyzes the role and significance of a custom in those and other regulatory acts. Indeed, The Code of Obligations did not set a legal definition of a custom and related terms. Nevertheless, the effect of a custom was widely used in determining the conditions under which an obligation was to be fulfilled. Custom, along with contract and law, influenced the material and financial obligations of the parties. The custom also played an important role in landlord-tenant relations. The paper examines the articles of the Trade Code which identify the custom and terms related to it. Indeed, Article 1 already outlines the existence of custom law and algorithms of its implementation. The Code essentially equated custom law with economic law. The author depicts how the legal definition of a custom law was used by lawmakers. It is noted that trade customs were a type of fair dealing or good faith behavior customs known to common law, in particular, the law of obligations of interwar Poland. In addition to the Trade Code and the Code of Obligations, custom law was also mentioned in other legal acts. In particular, in the laws on bills of exchange and check law. The author concludes that the civil law of the Second Polish Republic was actively utilizing concepts of a custom, custom law, trade custom and the so-called custom of fair circulation.

Development of the New Silk Road Project through the Caspian Region and its Impact on Energy Relations with Russia
  • Feb 1, 2025
  • Международные отношения
  • Tatyana Ivanovna Ponka + 2 more

The article analyzes the impact of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in the Caspian region on energy relations between China and Russia. The subject of the study is the transformation of energy relations between China and Russia under the influence of BRI projects in the Caspian region, including infrastructure initiatives (BTK railway, Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline), their role in creating alternative transit routes that bypass Russia. The geoeconomic expansion of China, its impact on the redistribution of the balance of power in Eurasia, competition for control over energy resources and logistics are analyzed. The contradictions between formal cooperation (EAEU, SCO) and hidden rivalry are studied, as well as the consequences for Russia's energy security: the risks of reducing the transit monopoly, weakening positions in Central Asia. Historical parallels between BRI and the Silk Road are considered, emphasizing the strategic continuity of Chinese policy. The methodology includes a historical and comparative analysis of the evolution of the Silk Road, a systematic study of strategic documents (agreements, development programs) and case studies of key projects (2013–2024), such as the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway and the Turkmenistan–China gas pipeline. The novelty of the study lies in the synthesis of historical parallels between ancient trade routes and modern infrastructure projects, as well as in the focus on the role of the Caspian region as a hub of energy competition. The results demonstrate that Chinese investments in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are forming alternative transit corridors to Russian ones, intensifying competition for influence in Eurasia. This creates risks for Russia's monopoly on energy transport, despite attempts to synchronize interests through the EAEU and the SCO. The scope of application of the results includes forecasting scenarios of Eurasian integration, developing energy diplomacy and analyzing the balance between cooperation and rivalry in the region. The findings highlight the need for a flexible strategy for Russia to maintain its position in Central Asia, including adapting to China’s growing economic presence and finding niches in new supply chains.

  • Sergey V Sokolov + 2 more

Purpose. As the studied parameters for the comparative analysis data have been used that characterize the equipment of towns and cities with means and forces of fire service and the values of integral fire risks. Data from fire service in 133 towns and cities, representing 65 Russian towns and cities with the total population of 51 million people (which makes up more than the third of the total population of Russia) and 68 foreign towns and cities with the total population of 295 million people, representing almost all continents of the Earth have been used in the article. The main objectives of the study are: parameters analysis of fire services in towns and cities, characterizing their equipment and assessment of some values of integral fire risks in towns and cities under study. Methods. The authors have applied descriptive statistics and correlation analysis methods for assessing relationships between the parameters. Findings. The conducted comparative analysis made it possible to establish that, on average, in all foreign towns and cities, one fire station serves 58 thousand people, and 16 square kilometers of the territory of a town or city, and in Russian towns and cities – 77 thousand people and 25 square kilometers of the territory. There are 1 000 people per one firefighter in foreign towns and cities, and 1 200 residents in the Russian ones. In terms of the number of fire appliances, the situation is as follows: in Russian towns and cities there are 8 thousand people per one fire appliance, and in foreign towns and cities – 23 thousand people. Values assessment of the integral fire risks shows that by the number of fires per 1 000 people the average indicators in Russian towns and cities (1,6) are lower than in the foreign ones (2,1), but the death risk is much worse, the values for the number of deaths per 100 thousand people in Russian towns and cities (2,5) are almost 3 times higher than in foreign ones (0,8). Research application field. The results of the study are of practical value and can be applied by fire service specialists worldwide at organizing and managing fire service activities in towns and cities. The authors consider the possibility of applying the results of the above analytics for justifying and developing regional standards for fire service resources. Conclusions. In foreign towns and cities, the equipment of fire stations and personnel is higher than in Russian ones, and in terms of fire appliances, the leadership belongs to Russian towns and cities. Values assessment of integral fire risks shows that in terms of the number of fires per unit of the population, Russian towns and cities have lower rates than foreign ones, but in terms of death risk in fires, on the contrary, the situation is much worse in Russian towns and cities than in foreign ones.

The global beer market is becoming increasingly competitive, and consumer image is a key to brand success. In Zimbabwe, a rise in the popularity of imported beer, like Russian ones, presents a unique opportunity for examining how cultural, economic, and sensory aspects make contributions to consumer imagery and favorability. This review examines the specifics of Zimbabwean consumer perception of beer with a focus on describing imagery of Russian beer brands. It examines how cultural variation, trade historical ties, and brand tactics influence Russian beer consumption in a market where the local and international brands tend to prevail. The article combines insights from consumer research, sensory science, and cross-cultural marketing in order to ascertain the equilibrium between intrinsic (taste, quality) and extrinsic (branding, cultural imagery) factors. By way of a review of methodologies and results of relevant studies, this review identifies opportunities and challenges for Russian beer brands in Zimbabwe, emphasizing the need for bespoke marketing that responds to local consumer values and expectations. The findings give some indication of international beer market trends and cross-cultural consumer preferences.

The discursive approach to the study of politeness has expanded its scope by incorporating the hearer, in addition to the speaker, as well as the context of interaction, which determines various aspects of communication, including the emotional/emotive dimension. This article examines politeness through the prism of the emotional component of communication. It contributes to the study of emotive politeness, which focuses on the recipient's feelings, in face-threatening acts. The purpose of this study is to identify the means of mitigating refusal through emotional support to the addressee in English and Russian academic digital communication and to trace their culture-specific variability. The material consists of authentic Russian and English emails that contain a refusal to a request to write a review of an article and a refusal to an invitation to contribute to a special issue of a journal. The study focuses on the structure of refusal, the ways it is performed, supporting moves that aim to mitigate its threat, as well as combinations of these and their conventional features. Contrastive analysis draws on the main provisions of emotive lingua-ecology, cross-cultural pragmatics, the theory of (im)politeness and communicative ethnostyles. Taking into account the fact that each e-mail may have its own features, predetermined by the author’s idiostyle and psychological characteristics, as well as the context of the exchange, we have identified some culture-specific features. The findings suggest that English emails are more focused on mitigating refusal and its negative effect on the addressee’s feelings, thereby saving face, compared with the Russian ones. This can be observed in the structure of refusal, its supporting moves and politeness strategies. The results confirm that politeness is not only a social, but also a psychological phenomenon based on empathy and tact. Emotive politeness, its manifestations and relevance may vary across cultures and are shaped by the values shared by its representatives.

Establishing a Ukrainian political nation is contingent upon a complex set of circumstances. Ukraine is compelled to wage a war against Russia for its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. In such times, national self-identification becomes pivotal in consolidating efforts across all resistance fronts. The formation of Ukrainian identity is complicated by the dichotomy within Ukraine's socio-cultural space, where Russian culture, alongside Ukrainian, has had significant influence. Russia's full-scale aggression has facilitated the ultimate dissolution of Russian influence on the self-identification of Ukrainians. This article aims to identify the main socio-cultural trends that influence the transformation of national identity and resilience in Ukraine. Constructivism serves as the principal methodological approach to the research, enabling the analysis of the critical elements of national identity during its formation and development. The research methods include document analysis and sociological data, case studies, comparison, synthesis, deduction, generalisation, and systematisation. The findings of the research indicate that the war has significantly impacted the self-identification processes of Ukrainians, hastening the decolonisation of Ukraine's socio-cultural space. Ukrainians are creating distance from Russian influences, including its culture and cultural outputs like music, literature, and cinema. There is a notable shift towards the use of the Ukrainian language and the gradual adoption of Ukrainian and European symbols over Russian ones. These changes are fostering a more robust national identity, enhancing the societal aspect of this identity, and catalysing a shift from feelings of inferiority to a rise in national pride and patriotism.
