THE DIACHRONIC APPROACH TO THE STUDY OF RHYTHM IN SHAKESPEARE’S PERFORMANCES

The article explores the overall influence and creativity of W. Shakespeare, as well as changes in approaches to theatrical interpretations and performances of Shakespeare’s works from a diachronic perspective. The themes of Shakespeare’s works delve into the complexities of human relationships, ensuring their relevance to this day. The significance of Shakespeare’s dramas and comedies on contemporary literature cannot be overstated. Performances of Shakespeare’s works evolve over time, rendering them entirely modern. The article discusses a shift in approach to speech rhythm, adding different characteristics and melodiousness, eliciting positive reactions from the audience. The diachronic approach involves comparing various performances across different time periods. To investigate real changes in the prosody of Shakespearean performances, the authors examined chronologically different renditions of the same excerpts and compared their key indicators using modern computer programs. The conclusions indicate significant changes in pause lengths, speech rates, and the direction of the main tone. The role of rhythm in Shakespeare’s performances serves as an emotional foundation and an even stronger link connecting the actor and the audience.

Sound and Sense: Poetic Form and Translating Sor Juana’s Amor es más laberinto

Abstract What is the role of rhythm, sound, meter, and rhyme in translations and performances of comedia? This essay discusses Sor Juana’s Amor es más laberinto and my process of translating moments of heightened verse in the play—sonnets spoken by the two princesses and sound-driven texts spoken (or perhaps sung) by the Chorus and by the character Music. The piece asks: How should these moments of heightened verse be translated? What is the relationship between author, translator, actor, and director as each participant in the creative process approaches form through their own understanding of sound and sense? Weaving together analysis of Sor Juana’s own reconfiguring of form and of contemporary innovations in poetic form, which each craft new visions of history and identity, the piece argues that translators are permitted, and perhaps obligated, to wield form and the poetic line to its full affective potential.

The role of rhythm in science-animated videos: construing entities and bridging across different semiotic modes

Recent decades have witnessed the increasing popularity of animation used for science education. However, the affordances of animation are still yet to be described in a comprehensive manner. Working on a corpus of online science animated videos, this article firstly proposes a visual rhythm system for animation, and then examines the convergence and divergence of the rhythm in animation and language at different levels of analysis. The author found that different visual rhythms in animation function to construe different quantities and properties of entities. In terms of the intermodal relations between animation and language, at shorter wavelengths, animation can be in sync with the rhythm in language, with different ‘beats’ in animation converging with different phonological units in language; at longer wavelengths, the larger rhythmic pattern of animation can function to scaffold the generic structure of language. This article enriches the systematic description of the meaning-making potential of animation, which also informs empirical studies focusing on the effectiveness of animation used for science education.

What Young People Think About Music, Rhythm and Trauma: An Action Research Study.

A number of popular theories about trauma have suggested rhythm has potential as a mechanism for regulating arousal levels. However, there is very little literature examining this proposal from the perspective of the young people who might benefit. This action research project addresses this gap by collaborating with four groups of children in the out-of-home-care system to discover what they wanted from music therapists who brought a strong focus on rhythm-based activities. The four music therapy groups took place over a 12 month period and each cycle of action and reflection led to adjustments in what activities were offered, as well as exploring different levels of structure and ways of building relationships in the groups. The initial group incorporated a strong emphasis on highly structured rhythm-based activities, but young people found the format difficult to engage with. The second cycle included more opportunities for creativity and self-direction within semi-structured activities which children reported enjoying, but too much freedom also became overwhelming at times. The two groups in the third cycle seemed to balance structure and responsiveness successfully but were also influenced by the introduction of individual sessions prior to group commencement, which was designed to contribute to safety and trust building. Final reflections on the role of rhythm in supporting young people who have had adverse experiences were centred around the ideas of co-regulation. This was qualitatively different to our expectations that practicing rhythm-based activities would lead to an expanded window of tolerance that resulted in less time being spent in either hypo-arousal or hyper-arousal. Instead of entraining to an external rhythm, young people felt safe when their rhythms were matched, even if they were irregular, out of time and unpredictable. The small moments of co-regulation resulted in pleasure, comfort, satisfaction and peace and these moments were highly valued by the young people, who described just wanting to be relaxed and happy. Although not as rhythm-specific as the literature might suggest, music making with trusted adults helped the young people in this study feel more content.

THE PAINFUL EXISTENCE IN THE BOLESŁAW LEŚMIAN’S POEM "AT NIGHT"

The paper deals with poetic translation analysis of the poem "At Night"of the Polish poet Bolesław Leśmian. The appearance of Bolesław Leśmian’s poetry in Ukrainian translation (the collections of selected works "Садбожий спалахненець" and "Ангели" translated by M. Kiianovska) has become an important event. The researcher focuses their attention on the contextual, poetic, poetical, artistic and stylistic peculiarities of the poem "At Night", in connection with the philosophic and literary views of the poet. The wide range of scientific works on Bolesław Leśmian’s poetry in Polish literary studies allows us to study different aspects of this poet’s poetics: symbolism, peculiarities of the artistic images creation, the appeal to folk sources, the language of his literary works, the image of God in his poetry, the role of rhythm, immediacy of worldview and creating the world anew in "song without words" etc. The poetics of the poem has been studied, its interpretation is based on the unity of compositional, semantic, figurative elements of the poem.
 The translation analysis, aimed at the study of structural and semantic features of the poem "At Night" in Ukrainian translation, is concentrated on the author’s peculiarities of creating images and their representation by M. Kiianovska in her translation of the poem. The author of the article focuses on the concept of the original and translation, the overall mood of the poem, its content, figurative system, structure, rhythmic organization, the rhyming system of the translation and the original. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the selection of lexical equivalents, the poetic syntax of the poem and other translation techniques on the way to better understanding of the text, the artistic images creation and grammatical and compositional integrity of the translation of the poem.

The Role of Rhythm and Metre in the Style and Genre Formation in B. Rachmanin’s Prose

The issues of rhythm and metre in prose of 1960-1970s reflect the experiments of young writers not only within the form. The search for new genres and ways of expressing new content are diverse. The article deals with literary works by Boris Leonidovich Rachmanin, the author of poetry collections, stories, screenwriter, who boldly created a new internal form of his works using both possibilities of meter and rhythm in his prose, which was different from the works of his predecessors in the Silver Age or those who worked in the Russian diaspora. The analysis of works A Letter, The Action Takes Place on the Other Planet and others shows the functional potential of special rhythm and melody of prose in the individual style of the writer and also outlines semasiological approaches in the analysis of a literary work in general. Comparison of literary works by B. Rachmanin with the works by A. Bely or I.A. Bunin as his predecessors and Yustinas Martsinkevichus as his contemporary author gives an idea of the tradition Rachmanin inherited and the cultural style of the epoch in which the writer worked.

Phenomenology of Rhythm: The Role of Rhythm in Written Language


 
 
 Based on existential-phenomenological perspectives from Merleau-Ponty and Løgstrup, we examine the significance of rhythm for written language skills. Rhythm is both omnipresent and a difficult phenomenon
 to explore. Methodologically, the article presents phenomenological descriptions and exemplifications, not least a case study of a secondary school student with written language difficulties. Our intention is to illuminate connections between rhythmic perspectives in movement, speech, working memory and language as prerequisites for the acquisition of written language skills. We conclude that rhythm is an essential aspect of our bodily being, and based on the work of Merleau-Ponty, we are able to bring to light relationships between body, rhythm, and written language skills in ways that would not be possible from a natural scientific point of view. Inspired by Merleau-Ponty's analytical approach and the hermeneutic phenomenology of Ricoeur, we will combine an understanding perspective with both human scientific and natural scientific explanations, into a holistic interpretation. The article thus draws empirically on qualitative descriptions of rhythmic phenomena, and theoretically on perspectives from philosophy of language, developmental psychology and neuropsychology, but they are all interpreted in the light of existential-phenomenological ontology.
 
 

“This place is (now) my own home. It is my home till my death”: Older adults (re)creating home through daily rhythms and kinning in formal care settings

This paper, based on a qualitative study, explores the home-making activities of older adults living in a non-profit, welfare-based institutional care home in Kerala, India. We employed in-depth interviews and observation to obtain rich data on various home-making practices of older adults. Contrary to the stigmatization in India of care homes as places of abandonment and desertion, this study illustrates: (1) the important role of non-profit care homes in protecting neglected older adults especially in non-western contexts; and (2) the performative roles of older adults who utilize, modify, and recreate home in formal care spaces. Our empirical results show that daily rhythmic activities, gender roles, kinning, and cultural practices in a formal care setting contribute to establishing new familial ties and continuity in life as well as a sense of insideness in a formal care home. This paper contributes to the emerging dialogue on the role of rhythm, kinning, and culture in home-making practices in formal care spaces in a non-western context.

A multimodal and socio-semiotic theory of early language evolution

ABSTRACT This paper presents a multimodal and socio-semiotic theory of early evolution of language. It argues that the evolution of spoken language was multimodal but that the emergence of its experiential meanings, including those of transitivity, as well as of the associated semantic and formal units, was helped by similar meanings and units being formed earlier and more easily in gestures. The role of rhythm in this process is also discussed. The indexical quality of early gestural-vocal communication, including that about displaced contexts, is explained by reference to the social organization of groups of early humans.

İngiliz Bir Eksantrik: Edith Sitwell ve Façade Şiirlerinde Sesle Yaptığı Deneyler

Throughout Edith Sitwell’s poetic career, one specific factor was always in the foreground in her works, that is, the experimental use of sound. Especially in her earlier period, employing rhythm as an experimental arrangement of sounds dominated the bulk of her poems. Sitwell prioritised this technical element over thematic components, and thus developed an inventive approach to the art of poetry in the early twentieth century. Her famous poetry collection, Façade (1922) can be considered one of the most distinguished examples of her experimental manner, consisting of several abstract poems which were compiled for dramatic performance and for William Walton’s music. With Walton’s contributions, Sitwell combined the elements of music and poetry in Façade, and she formed a new artistic domain where she could express and improve her poetic style by working on the use of sound and rhythm. The reason for her emphasis on the role of rhythm in poetry was not only its significance as a technical attribute but also its functioning as a representative of the century’s spirit. For Sitwell, the rhythm of the twentieth century must not be the rhythm of the eighteenth or the nineteenth centuries, on the contrary, it should reflect the soul of its era. Accordingly, Sitwell advocated that poetry should be compatible with the tone of the period in which it is produced. Therefore, the poems in the collection were designed to be as unsteady, tumultuous, and complex as the era they belonged to, and this composition was achieved through her experimental style. In this respect, the primary aim of this article is to discuss Sitwell’s technical and stylistic experiments with sound in her Façade poems and examine her perception of artistic creation in the twentieth century.

The role of rhythm in adaptation to dysrhythmic speech, continued

Rhythm cues have been shown to be important for deciphering speech in adverse listening conditions, even when the rhythm cues are corrupted. In an initial attempt to document the relationship between rhythm perception and processing of a naturally dysrhythmic speech signal, we found that listeners with expertise in rhythm perception were not advantaged with initial intelligibility of ataxic dysarthria but were significantly advantaged with adaptation to the degraded speech signal [Borrie, Lansford, and Barrett, Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 60, 561–570 (2017)]. We speculated that listeners with skills in rhythm perception are better able to exploit experience (familiarization) with the degraded speech, learning something useful about corrupted rhythm cues for subsequent processing. This current study investigated whether the relationship between rhythm perception and perceptual adaptation of dysrhythmic speech, observed in our previous study with ataxic dysarthria, holds for other forms of dysrhythmic speech. Here, we replicate our original study with two different forms of dysarthria: the largely irregular and unpredictable speech of hyperkinetic dysarthria secondary to Huntington’s disease, and the relatively regular and predictable speech of hypokinetic dysarthric speech secondary to Parkinson’s disease. Results will bear on models of dysrhythmic speech perception as well as clinical practice.

Malay Gamelan: Approaches of music learning through Community Music

This paper looked into the role of Rhythm in Bronze (RiB), a local music group in Malaysia, in community music work practices that uses Malay gamelan as the medium. The research delved into the different aspects of the approaches used to enhance music learning through community music; particularly the activities used and how they relate to Vygotsky’s theory of socialization in learning. Community music gathers people from different backgrounds. Experiences and knowledge shared helps the community through the development in terms of personal growth, self- esteem and self-confidence. These terms are just some of the aspects that community music promotes, apart from music making. Along the process of community music, creativity and expression are important in music making, as this will further develop creative thinking skills among musicians. Qualitative approaches such as observation, interview, and group’s past work were used in this research to gather information and data on how music has been taught to children through community music. Social interaction has certainly shown a big role in developing children thinking and perceptions through the activities implemented. In the other hand, Zoltan Kodaly, Carl Orff, and Emile Jaques-Dalcroze approaches identified through data analysis as it has helped the children to have more fun and always looking forward to the sessions. This documented writing will certainly help people to understand between the whole concepts of community music in the context of Rhythm in Bronze.

Rap and singing are used by music therapists to enhance emotional self-regulation of youth: Results of a survey of music therapists in the Netherlands

The purpose of this study was to examine approaches of music therapists towards the application, frequency, and function of rap and sing engagements. Identification of these characteristics might support the refinement of these therapeutic interventions and encourage detailed application.A 25-question survey was sent to 336 qualified music therapists in the Netherlands. The questions sought information on such aspects as the role of rhythm in rapping and of melody in singing, the frequency of these applications in music therapy practice, and the treatment goals with reference to the needs of the clients.Results indicated that both rapping and singing applications in music therapy can enhance self-regulative skills during the process of emotional expression. In particular rapping occurred in this study considerably less frequent than singing but considered to decrease aggressive behavior. Singing was applied daily and associated with the support of deeper emotional involvement. The results suggest the need for more consistent descriptions of therapeutic interventions for the use of rap styles in music therapy practice, and the development of specialized protocols for research studying its effects for quality improvement.

The role of rhythm in intonational melody: A case study from Fataluku

This paper takes a fresh look at the theoretical relationship between linguistic rhythm and linguistic melody, arguing for a closer connection between metrical structure and intonational organization than is typically assumed. The focus of this paper is the theoretical treatment of word-medial intonational targets in languages without stress, since at first glance, such word-medial targets challenge the core assumption of the autosegmental-metrical theory of intonation that all intonational targets are aligned either with a stressed syllable or with the edge of a prosodic domain. I propose that this theoretical dilemma may be resolved by taking into account foot edges as possible alignment sites for edge tones. The claim that intonational tones may be aligned with foot edges is supported with new data from the Papuan language Fataluku. The implications of such an analysis for other stressless languages are also discussed.

A Phonological Study Of Rhythm In Thomas Gray’s Poetry

This paper deals with a phonological analysis of rhythm in Thomas Gray’s poetry. As such, the current study attempts to answer the following questions: a. what are the rhythmic patterns in Thomas Gray’s poetry? b. what is the role of rhythm in the construction of the poetic value in Thomas Gray’s poetry? Accordingly, this study aims to (1) identify the rhythmic patterns in Thomas Gray’s poetry; and (2) explicate the role of rhythm in the construction of the poetic value in Thomas Gray’s poetry. To achieve the aims of the study, the following procedures are adopted: a.reviewing literature on rhythm in phonological and poetic studies; b.using a model developed by this study to analyze the data under scrutiny which are represented by two poems randomly selected from Thomas Gray’s ones. It has been concluded that rhythm in Gray’s poetry is characterized by variation and effectiveness since it is not limited to one metering flow of feet. Additionally, deviations of stress in poetic rhythm are related to the general theme of the poem and the literary objective of the poet himself. This reflects changes in the mood of the poem.

The role of rhythm in perceiving speech in noise: a comparison of percussionists, vocalists and non-musicians.

The natural rhythms of speech help a listener follow what is being said, especially in noisy conditions. There is increasing evidence for links between rhythm abilities and language skills; however, the role of rhythm-related expertise in perceiving speech in noise is unknown. The present study assesses musical competence (rhythmic and melodic discrimination), speech-in-noise perception and auditory working memory in young adult percussionists, vocalists and non-musicians. Outcomes reveal that better ability to discriminate rhythms is associated with better sentence-in-noise (but not words-in-noise) perception across all participants. These outcomes suggest that sensitivity to rhythm helps a listener understand unfolding speech patterns in degraded listening conditions, and that observations of a "musician advantage" for speech-in-noise perception may be mediated in part by superior rhythm skills.

The Role of Rhythm in Speech and Language Rehabilitation: The SEP Hypothesis.

For thousands of years, human beings have engaged in rhythmic activities such as drumming, dancing, and singing. Rhythm can be a powerful medium to stimulate communication and social interactions, due to the strong sensorimotor coupling. For example, the mere presence of an underlying beat or pulse can result in spontaneous motor responses such as hand clapping, foot stepping, and rhythmic vocalizations. Examining the relationship between rhythm and speech is fundamental not only to our understanding of the origins of human communication but also in the treatment of neurological disorders. In this paper, we explore whether rhythm has therapeutic potential for promoting recovery from speech and language dysfunctions. Although clinical studies are limited to date, existing experimental evidence demonstrates rich rhythmic organization in both music and language, as well as overlapping brain networks that are crucial in the design of rehabilitation approaches. Here, we propose the “SEP” hypothesis, which postulates that (1) “sound envelope processing” and (2) “synchronization and entrainment to pulse” may help stimulate brain networks that underlie human communication. Ultimately, we hope that the SEP hypothesis will provide a useful framework for facilitating rhythm-based research in various patient populations.

Rhythm Returns: Movement and Cultural Theory

This introduction charts several of rhythm's various returns as a way of laying out the theoretical and methodological field in which the articles of this special issue find their place. While Henri Lefebvre’s rhythmanalysis is perhaps familiar to many, rhythm has appeared in a wide repertoire of guises, in many disciplines over the decades and indeed the centuries. This introduction attends to the particular roles of rhythm in the formation of modernity ranging from the processes of industrialization and the proliferation of new media technologies to film and literary aesthetics as well as conceptualizations of human psychology, social behaviour and physiology. These are some of the historical antecedents to the contemporary understandings of rhythm within body studies to which most of the contributions to this issue are devoted. In this respect, the introduction outlines recent approaches to rhythm as vibration, a force of the virtual, and an intensive excess outside consciousness.
