Report on Graphitization Studies on High-Temperature Welded Piping of The Philadelphia Electric Company

Abstract Summaries of the work which has been done by and for the Philadelphia Electric Company in ascertaining the degree of graphitization in the piping system in the Chester, Schuylkill, and Richmond Stations since the fall of 1946, are reported in this paper. The results of a fullsize pipe tension test on a graphitized weld section are reported. Solution treatment for removal of graphitization is described with some physical test results.

The Initiation and Propagation of the Plastic Zone in a Tension Bar of Mild Steel as Influenced by the Speed of Stretching and Rigidity of Testing Machine

Abstract The results of several tension tests with round and flat bars of mild steel and iron, under the influence of variations in speed of stretching and testing-machine rigidity, are presented. The emphasis in this work has been placed upon explaining the yield-point phenomena, as viewed externally on a stress-strain diagram, by the observations made and data taken on the internal localized yielding, as presented by the test piece. The study has been focused on the initiation of the plastic zone and the propagation of the boundaries of this zone, sometimes called the plastic working lengths, along the length of the tensile specimen.

Effect of Temperature on Physical and Optical Properties of Photoelastic Materials

Abstract This paper reports the results of tension tests, to determine the suitability for photoelastic work, of five samples of Bakelite and two of Marblette at temperatures between 32 and 140 F. These results show the variation, of Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, stress-optical coefficient, and strain-optical coefficient with temperature. Stress-strain curves of the materials are also given showing the relative amounts of creep. The effect of heat-treatment on Marblette is shown by tests before and after annealing.

Abstract of Progress Report No. 3 on Heavy Helical Springs

Abstract This abstract gives the principal results of static tension and torsion tests, rotating-beam endurance tests in bending, and torsion endurance tests of straight pieces of plain carbon basic open-hearth, plain carbon electric-furnace and silicon-vanadium spring steel. These results are compared with those for other steels.

High-Temperature Properties of Cast and Wrought Carbon Steels From Large Valves for High-Temperature Service

Abstract The authors report on a comparison made at temperatures of 750, 850, and 950 F of the short-time tension, impact, and creep properties of two forged and two cast carbon steels taken from finished valve bodies and tees obtained from the regular commercial run of three reputable manufacturers and made for service at elevated temperatures. Each manufacturer suppling the material gave it the heat-treatment normally used in his own plant for that particular type of material. Two cast steels and one forged steel contained about 0.35 per cent carbon and one forged steel contained about 0.27 per cent carbon. Definite differences in structure were found. One cast steel as supplied by the manufacturer showed a spheroidized structure, while the other three steels were pearlitic. Results of the creep tests are compared with the structures, and results of the short-time tension tests and impact tests at room and elevated temperatures are given.
