By considerate postoperative care of immediate denture patients and dentures the physiologic and psychologic advantages of the immediate or transitional denture service can be increased. The preoperative preparation of patients helps to reduce the initial problems which accompany the seating of immediate dentures, and helps to minimize postoperative inflammation and discomfort. Thus the initial effectiveness of the service is increased. By the use of tissue treatment materials and coldcuring acrylic resins, maximum comfort and masticatory efficiency can be maintained while tissues are changing relatively rapidly. There is notably less bone loss when the dentures fit accurately. By the continuing care of the dentures, the future effectiveness of the denture service protects the patients from excessive loss of residual alveolar support for the dentures. The psychologic advantages of postoperative care fall mainly under the category of appearance and cosmetic considerations. The judicious use of temporary relining materials make possible the maintenance of the appearance of patients, the anteroposterior position of the teeth, and patients can indulge in the manifest joys of a natural smile. The result appears to be more satisfactory if patients are offered all possible considerate postoperative care following the placement of the immediate dentures.
