The Principle, Methods and Recent Progress in RFID Positioning Techniques: A Review

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has become a key enabler for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). By taking advantage of the backscattered radio waves, the identity and position of RFID-labeled objects can be obtained simultaneously. Very many efforts have been devoted to the investigations of RFID positioning, but practical applications are rarely seen in industrial sectors. Motived by the potentiality of RFID positioning and the gap between research and practice, this investigation aims to provide an in-depth survey of the methods and the latest technical progress in RFID positioning to identify the underlying challenges. The main contributions include (1) A theoretical model of radio frequency backscatter coupling-based positioning and an in-depth analysis of the influencing parameters. (2) A new classification of RFID positioning techniques with a discussion of the latest progress. (3) A summary of the potential applications and the underlying challenges facing the state-of-the-art, including the simultaneous attitude and position acquisition and the flexible integration with practical applications. (4) The prospects of emerging technologies such as the integration of identification, sensing, and positioning, RFID positioning-powered robotics operations, and machine learning/deep learning algorithms are discussed. This investigation gives a comprehensive perspective on RFID positioning, which provides a reference for related research and practices.

Research on the agile management system of workshop production resources

Industry 4.0 has a key technical point that the intelligent factory uses the ‘ raw materials ’ containing information to complete the production tracking. The high-performance real-time positioning system is an important part of the real-time tracking and positioning of materials in the industrial Internet of Things. Passive Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has become the preferred solution for the industrial 4.0 material real-time positioning system. This paper first analyzes the RFID positioning technology, gives the process architecture of workshop manufacturing resource RFID real-time information-driven production line and the classification and management scheme of multi-source real-time manufacturing information, and realizes the RFID tracking and positioning of workshop manufacturing resource.

RFID Positioning and Physiological Signals for Remote Medical Care

The safety of patients and the quality of medical care provided to them are vital for their wellbeing. This study establishes a set of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)-based systems of patient care based on physiological signals in the pursuit of a remote medical care system. The RFID-based positioning system allows medical staff to continuously observe the patient's health and location. The staff can thus respond to medical emergencies in time and appropriately care for the patient. When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, the proposed system was used to provide timely information on the location and body temperature of patients who had been screened for the disease. The results of experiments and comparative analyses show that the proposed system is superior to competing systems in use. The use of remote monitoring technology makes user interface easier to provide high-quality medical services to remote areas with sparse populations, and enables better care of the elderly and patients with mobility issues. It can be found from the experiments of this research that the accuracy of the position sensor and the ability of package delivery are the best among the other related studies. The presentation of the graphical interface is also the most cordial among human-computer interaction and the operation is simple and clear.

Transformation of educational roles of library-supported mobile learning: a literature review from 2009 to 2018

PurposeThis study aims to explore the transformation of the roles of libraries, application trends and potential research issues of library-supported mobile learning.Design/methodology/approachThe publications in the Scopus database from 2009 to 2018 are reviewed and analyzed from various aspects, such as the roles of libraries in mobile learning, types of libraries, research foci and sensing or location-based technologies.FindingsThe role of libraries as learning material providers is examined the most in library-supported mobile learning studies, followed by the role as inquiry context providers and as knowledge-sharing platforms. In terms of the role as learning material providers, academic libraries were investigated the most and radio frequency identification (RFID) was mainly adopted. In terms of the role as inquiry context providers, special libraries were explored the most; adopted sensing technologies were more diverse (e.g. QR code, augmented reality, RFID and Global Positioning System). Only special libraries played a role as knowledge-sharing platforms, adopting augmented reality. Most research on library-supported mobile learning mainly focused on investigating the affective domain during mobile learning.Practical implicationsFive potential applications of educational roles in library-supported mobile learning are suggested based on the findings of the present study.Originality/valueThe current study provides insights relevant to the educational roles of library-supported mobile learning. The findings and suggestions can serve as references for researchers and school teachers conducting library-supported mobile learning.

UHF/UWB Tag Antenna of Circular Polarization

A dual-band circularly polarized (CP) tag antenna is presented in this paper, which combines ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) and ultrawideband (UWB) operations for radio-frequency identification (RFID) and high-precision localization applications. The proposed antenna consists of two CP radiating elements with separated ports, where the UHF element is a planar loop antenna loaded with two pairs of meander lines of different dimensions for compactness and CP radiation, while the UWB element is a modified Archimedean spiral antenna with a tapered metallization ratio and encircled by the UHF loop. In addition, a miniaturized shunt-stub is employed in the UHF element to realize conjugate matching between the antenna and the UHF RFID chip. Experimental characterization of a fabricated prototype has validated the design, which shows that the proposed antenna exhibits very good radiation performance at both the bands, with −10 dB power reflection bandwidths of 0.86–0.975 GHz and 2.6–12 GHz, and 3 dB axial-ratio bandwidths of 0.911–0.938 GHz and 3.1–11.1 GHz, respectively. This antenna can find applications in RFID and indoor positioning systems.

A Mobile Object Tracking Scheme by Wired/wireless Integrated Street Lights with RFID

Since a sophisticated location determination technology (LDT) is necessary for accurate positioning in urban area environments, numerous studies related to the LDT using the RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) technology have been implemented for real‐time positioning and data transferring. However, there are still lots of unsolved questions especially regarding what to use as base stations and what are corresponding results under the intrinsic complexity of alignment and configuration of components used for the RFID positioning. This study proposes the street light fixtures as base stations where the RFID receivers will be embedded for the mobile tracking scheme. As street light fixtures are usually installed at a certain distance interval, they can be used as base stations for the RFID receiver installation. Using the principle of the single row triangle network, the RFID receiver organization is determined based on the experiments such as recognition distance measurement and tag position accuracy estimation at inside and outside of the single row triangle network. The results verify that the mobile tracking scheme which uses RFID-embedded street light fixtures, suggested and configured in this study, is effective for the real-time outdoor positioning.

A Low-cost RFID/GPS Location Sensing Algorithm for Urban Infrastructure

Low-cost Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) location sensing algorithm is practical and crucial for urban infrastructure location. Current RFID location algorithms are based on fixed multiple RFID reader or reference points (reader or tag) with known position, which is cost and difficult to deployment in urban environment. The objective of this study is to develop a low-cost location sensing algorithm using RFID technique to locate urban infrastructure. This paper presents an algorithm based on multilateration with the integration of mobile RFID and Global Position System (GPS). The mobility of RFID reader can measure many distances between different RFID reader positions and target tag which represent multilateration. The GPS provides coordination of RFID reader. The location of tag is calculated based on triangle geometric property. The redundant observation is adopted to get the optimum location. In practice, the only one RFID reader is necessary, thus the cost is reduced hardly. The performance and accuracy assessment are conducted in field experiment. The experiment proves that the proposed low-cost location sensing algorithm is able to location the urban infrastructure with smaller position error. The lower cost makes it even more economically feasible than other algorithm.

Enhanced Boundary Condition–Based Approach for Construction Location Sensing Using RFID and RTK GPS

AbstractThe radio frequency identification (RFID) technology has proven its potential in locating and tracking construction resources, a critical task in construction project control. However, the main challenge is how to achieve desired levels of locating accuracy. This paper presents an enhanced boundary condition method that incorporates the tag-reader angle and the reader geometric configuration factors to control the accuracy of a locating system that integrates RFID and real time kinematic (RTK) global positioning system (GPS). Controlled laboratory experiments were conducted to assess their effects and create quality control filters. This study demonstrated the relationship between the detecting range and the tag-reader angle and used it to separate valid/invalid boundary points. Adaptive RFID Indoor Positioning Technology for Wheelchair Home Health Care Robot

In this paper, we propose an adaptive radio frequency identification (RFID) indoor positioning system technology for wheelchair home health care robot with wireless communication. The proposed RFID positioning system uses one reader and four tags which is low cost when applying in a large space of the indoor environment. It reduces the measured calculation by using multiple RFID tags instead of multiple RFID readers. While the measured experimental RFID data found with error leading to signal changes in different environmental parameters, we developed the adaptive fuzzy neural network technology to adjust the measurement data. Through the compensation of the measurement error, the actual wheelchair robot location-based application could be performed to overcome the uncertain environmental parameters. The positioning system provides very good accuracy and make home health care wheelchair robot positioning system available for navigation and guidance.

Implement the RFID Position Based System of Automatic Tablets Packaging Machine for Patient Safety

Patient safety has been regarded as the most important quality policy of hospital management. The medicine dispensing definitely plays an influential role in the Joint Commission International Accreditation Standards. The problem we are going to discuss in this paper is that the function of detecting mistakes does not exist in the Automatic Tablets packaging machine (ATPM) in the hospital pharmacy department when the pharmacists implement the replenishment of cassettes. In this situation, there are higher possibilities of placing the wrong cassettes back to the wrong positions, so that the human errors will lead to a crucial impact on total inpatients undoubtedly. Therefore, this study aims to design the RFID (Radio frequency identification) position based system (PBS) for the ATPM with passive high frequency (HF) model. At first, we placed the HF tags on each cassette and installed the HF readers on the cabinets for each position. Then, the system works on the reading loop to verify ID numbers and positions on each cassette. Next, the system would detect whether the orbit opens or not and controls the readers' working power consumption for drug storage temperature. Finally, we use the RFID PBS of the ATPM to achieve the goal of avoiding the medication errors at any time for patient safety.

The Study on Using Passive RFID Tags for Indoor Positioning

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is the technology that put an RFID tag on objects or people, so that they can be identified, tracked, and managed automatically. With its wide application in the automobile assembly industry, warehouse management and the supply chain network, RFID has been recognized as the next promising technology in serving the positioning purpose. Existing positioning technologies such as GPS are not available indoors as the terminal cannot get the signal from satellites. To enhance the availability of the positioning systems for indoors, the development of RFID positioning system for locating objects or people have became a hot topic in recent research. Compared with conventional active and high-cost solutions, this paper studied the feasibility of using passive RFID tags for indoor positioning and object location detection to provide real time information for tracking movement. Results of experiment show that readability of the passive RFID positioning system is satisfactory, and it is a more cost effective solution when compared with other positioning technologies.

Tracking via Square Grid of RFID Reader Positioning and Diffusion Algorithm

The study and analysis of RFID (radio frequency identification) reader positioning is important for RFID large-scale deployment. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate the art of RFID reader positioning in order to develop a highly accurate positioning and tracking system for usage inside a building and also to optimize the tracking performance that can be applied to different active and passive RFID standards. This study involves design of square grid RFID reader network and position calculation using diffusion algorithm. Square grid network presents the solution of placement pattern of RFID readers, hence optimal number of required readers and guaranteed coverage can be achieved. The proposed diffusion algorithm makes use of distance information between the reader and the tag to estimate the RFID tag position. This study has also introduced a probabilistic mathematical model to maintain coverage of the unit square region and to ensure connectivity of the proposed square grid network. The effectiveness of the diffusion algorithm is evaluated in this study and the obtained results show satisfactory performance. The obtained results show that the proposed positioning system can achieve average positioning error below 1 m with different RFID reading ranges and in some cases accuracy improvement of about 65% can be reached than the results obtained by known positioning system. It is also found that the proposed diffusion algorithm together with square grid can bring approximately 50---85% improvement on raw accuracy provided by only square grid method.
