Radio frequency cold plasma ashing of plant material was evaluated for its effectiveness in reducing organic composition and producing a “spodogram” of phytoliths and other inorganic inclusions. This low temperature, dry procedure limits the alteration of the inorganic inclusion in contrast to the high temperature incineration and strong chemical oxidation methods currently in use. The calcareous and siliceous phytoliths uncovered by the cold plasma treatment of both dietary and fibrous plants were examined by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive analysis of X-rays.
