Cooking competence plays a central role in shaping diet patterns and structuring everyday life. Yet, how emerging adults learn cooking competence after leaving the parental home remains insufficiently understood. Existing research has tended to emphasise parental transmission, school-based education and structured intervention, reflecting transfer-based learning assumptions. Following Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines, this review was conducted as a mixed-methods systematic review integrating quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method evidence through a convergent-integrated synthesis to interpret learning across study designs. A total of 35 empirical studies published between 1990 and 2025, and identified across five databases, were included. The aim was to explore what is known about emerging adults' learning of cooking competence. The review was pre-registered in Prospero (CRD42024534477). Across diverse study designs and purposes, three key findings emerge. First, the transition to independent living constitutes a distinct and formative context in which cooking competence is learned, driven by new responsibilities, routines and shifting material conditions. Second, emerging adults appear as agentic and competent learners who experiment and navigate everyday constraints. Third, learning cooking competence is predominantly practice-based and supported by multiple sources of people and tools, including social media, whereas parental instruction, school and interventions play more limited roles than commonly assumed. These findings show that current research underestimates practice-based learning processes during emerging adulthood and overemphasises formal instruction. The review identifies theoretical and methodological challenges in existing literature and highlights the need for research designs attending to everyday practice, contextual conditions, and the lived experience of emerging adults. The synthesis provides conceptual and methodological insight for researchers, policy, and practice by clarifying what is currently known about emerging adults' learning of cooking competence after leaving the parental home.

The gradual recruitment of tortuous medial collagen fibers underlies the nonlinear behavior of arteries within the physiological loading regime, while adventitial collagen fibers are hypothesized to act primarily as a protective element during supraphysiological loading events, such as balloon angioplasty. We examined five human cerebral artery specimens using multiphoton microscopy to image adventitial collagen during progressive supraphysiological uniaxial testing to failure. Fiber angles, tortuosity, and sublayer location were quantified for 3467 fibers across the adventitial thickness. A mixed-effects regression model assessed the effects of strain, tortuosity, sublayer index, and their interactions on circumferential fiber alignment. Higher strain significantly decreased fiber angles (p<0.001), indicating greater alignment, while higher tortuosity reduced alignment (p<0.01) and diminished aligning effects of strain (p<0.001). Sublayer position was also significant (p<0.001), with adventitial fibers closer to the media being more aligned. With increasing stretch, adventitial fibers first lose tortuosity. At higher stretch (λ∗≈1.25±0.09, σ∗≈0.92±0.27MPa), internal elastic lamina (IEL) tearing and adjacent medial fiber rupture occur, followed by circumferential adventitial fiber alignment. However, in this cohort (mean age 73.4±7.9 years), realignment was observed after multiple transverse IEL and medial tears had occurred. These findings provide quantitative, layer- and sublayer-specific evidence of a two-stage adventitial response, highlighting the coupled influence of loading, tortuosity, and wall depth on fiber alignment, and underscoring the need for high-fidelity models that explicitly incorporate layer-specific fiber architecture and failure mechanisms.

Increasing physical activity (PA) is an important recommendation for the management of hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA), under which components of therapeutic exercise can be embedded. However, maintaining PA behaviour (≥ 6-months) following the cessation of structured exercise interventions remains challenging and under-explored. This mixed-methods systematic literature review aimed to identify the barriers to and facilitators of maintaining PA behaviour for those living with hip and/or knee OA. Electronic databases were searched for peer-reviewed studies examining PA behaviour maintenance (defined as at least six-months post-intervention) for those with hip and/or knee OA. Data were extracted, appraised using the Mixed-methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT), and synthesised narratively. Sixteen studies (n = 1,486; 73.7% female) were included: six quantitative, five qualitative and five mixed-methods. The most frequently cited TDF domains were beliefs about capabilities (e.g. confidence reinforced by intervention skills), environmental context and resources (e.g. competing priorities), and memory, attention and decisional processes (e.g. memory recall - forgetting). Quantitative evidence supported these domains highlighting that correlates such as self-efficacy, energy levels, social support and resource availability strongly influenced PA behaviour maintenance. Integrated findings informed the Physical Activity Maintenance for osteoArthritis (PAMA) conceptual map, illustrating the dynamic interactions between individual, social and environmental factors. This review revealed that maintaining PA behaviour is multifactorial and influenced by individual, social and environmental factors. Further research should consider these interactions in the design of future interventions and in healthcare practice to foster and support the maintenance of PA behaviour for those living with hip and knee OA. The increasing use of compostable plastics in organic waste management calls for reliable analytical tools to verify their complete biodegradation and environmental safety. This study builds upon a previous full-scale composting experiment that monitored the disintegration of certified compostable packaging under industrial composting conditions. A dedicated analytical protocol was optimized and validated to extract, identify, and quantify biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) remaining in the compost. The method combines preconcentration by fractionation, deagglomeration in hot water, density separation with CaCl2, mild oxidative digestion with H2O2, and identification by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) microscopy. Fragments larger than 35µm for PBAT and larger than 27µm for PLA and PHBV were detected. In full-scale industrial composting, the protocol revealed near-complete biodegradation of PLA (98.4%) and PBAT (92.6%), whereas PHBV showed partial degradation (49.9%) due to the structural constraints of the coffee capsule format. Residual BMPs were further assessed under controlled soil conditions, where continued mineralization of PBAT and PHBV confirmed their environmental degradability and low persistence. These findings bridge the gap between disintegration and mineralization, providing quantitative evidence of biodegradation from compost to soil and supporting the environmental compatibility of compostable packaging materials.

Psychiatric readmission following inpatient discharge is common and is frequently used as an indicator of continuity and quality of care in mental health services. Although readmission is often interpreted as a marker of clinical relapse, increasing evidence suggests that psychosocial factors may contribute to post-discharge outcomes. However, evidence on these factors remains fragmented across settings, populations, and healthcare systems.This systematic review synthesised quantitative observational evidence on psychosocial factors associated with psychiatric readmission following discharge from acute inpatient mental health care. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and APA PsycINFO was conducted from database inception in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Eligible studies included adult psychiatric inpatients and examined at least one psychosocial factor assessed during admission or prior to discharge in relation to subsequent psychiatric readmission. Due to substantial clinical and methodological heterogeneity, findings were synthesised narratively.Fifteen studies conducted across diverse international healthcare systems were included. The most consistent findings were observed for housing instability, homelessness, and unstable residential context, which were repeatedly associated with psychiatric readmission across population-based, hospital-based, and clinical registry studies. Evidence for socioeconomic disadvantage, employment status, social integration, and social support was more heterogeneous, limited, or dependent on how these constructs were measured and adjusted for.These findings suggest that psychiatric readmission reflects not only clinical trajectories but also broader social vulnerability during the transition from inpatient to community-based care. Integrating systematic assessment of psychosocial circumstances, particularly housing instability and barriers to outpatient follow-up, into discharge planning may be important for improving continuity of care and reducing avoidable psychiatric readmissions.

ABSTRACT This paper addresses the methodological challenges of surveying migrant populations – a hard-to-reach group due to limited sampling frames, small population sizes, and multi-sited data complexities. Using Meta’s platforms, Facebook and Instagram, we explore the potential of social-media-driven survey sampling (SMDS) for reaching migrants. Our contribution is threefold: first, we review strands of social-media-based survey research and situate migrant-focused studies within this literature. Second, drawing on a study of Nigerian expatriates across 11 countries, we offer six key practices for enhancing recruitment: assessing feasibility through reach estimates, establishing credibility via institutional affiliation, customizing advertisements to connect with subgroups, engaging a target-group moderator, maintaining communication and transparency, and assessing and improving representativeness. Third, we draw on both qualitative and quantitative evidence from our study to illustrate how these practices operate. Our findings suggest these practices can improve recruitment success in migrant-focused SMDS studies and offer practical guidance relevant to similar hard-to-reach populations.

The implementation of digital technologies within health services promises increased performance, quality, and efficiency. However, evidence is limited regarding the application and outcomes of digital technologies implemented at the level of health services (meso-level) or health systems (macro-level), rather than those evaluated solely as patient-level clinical interventions (micro-level). We systematically review state-of-the-art digital technologies and their applications in healthcare systems and conduct a framework synthesis to review outcomes related to maturity and implementation. Eleven databases were searched (Embase, HMIC, Medline, PsycInfo, SPP, AgeLine, AMED, CDAS, CINAHL, SCOPUS, WoS) on 4th November 2024 for systematic and non-systematic reviews published within the previous five years that provided an overview of digital technologies applied at a systems/service-level (macro/meso-level) in healthcare or evidence for their outcomes. Studies into individual interventions (micro-level) were excluded. Risk of bias/quality assessment tools used in the reviews were recorded. We review types and applications of technology, then use a framework synthesis methodology to assess outcomes relating to digital transformation awareness/maturity, implementation, UK context, and challenges. Our searches identified 1423 records, with 1011 remaining after deduplication. Of these, 131 were assessed for eligibility, with 28 reviews reporting on 1606 individual studies (with an additional 2437 included in a bibliometric analysis) included in the final analysis. We identified five main groups of technology in healthcare: Integrated Technology/Industry 4.0, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT), and Blockchain. Our framework synthesis revealed recent conceptual recognition of digital transformation, and variability across regions with regards to the sophistication and maturity of uptake of technologies. We report on four reviews which provided quantitative evidence on the impact of digital technologies in health services. Barriers included major concerns related to data privacy and trust, equity, ethics, and implementation logistics. UK frameworks exist for implementation of technologies, but do not focus exclusively on the systems-level. Digital technologies are increasingly integrated into health service delivery, yet the maturity and evaluation of these tools vary across regions. More robust implementation research is needed for advanced systems. Our synthesis provides a framework for healthcare leaders to assess digital readiness and prioritise technologies aligned with service transformation goals. Limitations of evidence include the heterogeneity of technologies, settings, and outcomes across included reviews. The review was not part of a trial and was not registered.

Lymph nodes are essential components of the human immune system, and lymph node lesions present considerable challenges for pathological diagnosis due to their complexity and heterogeneity. Conventional diagnosis mainly relies on histopathological examination of surgical specimens, whereas fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of superficial enlarged lymph nodes is a rapid, minimally invasive, and clinically valuable tool for preliminary etiological identification and targeted treatment planning. This study aimed to summarize the cytomorphological features of FNAC in four major categories of superficial enlarged lymph node lesions (lymph node reactive hyperplasia (LNRH), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), and lymph node metastatic carcinoma (LNMC), evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of FNAC using histopathological results as the gold standard, and provide evidence-based references for clinical preliminary diagnosis and treatment decision-making. We retrospectively analyzed 133 consecutive cases of lymph node FNAC followed by surgical resection and histopathological confirmation at a single center from January 2023 to December 2024. FNAC smears were stained with Liu's solution, histopathological sections with hematoxylin and eosin, and immunohistochemistry was applied for disease-specific marker detection. The overall diagnostic accuracy of FNAC was 89.47%. The sensitivity was highest for LNMC (95.52%, 95% CI: 87.23-98.97%), and the specificity was 100.00% for HL (95% CI: 97.19-100.00%). NHL showed a sensitivity of 80.95% and a positive predictive value of 84.00%, while LNRH had a negative predictive value of 90.91%. Chi-square test revealed significant intergroup differences in cellular atypia, cell distribution patterns, and characteristic cells among the four lesion types (P < 0.001). In conclusion, FNAC is a moderately reliable minimally invasive screening tool for superficial enlarged lymph node lesions. Clarifying its diagnostic efficacy and distinct cytomorphological features provides valuable morphological and quantitative evidence for clinicians to conduct preliminary classification and formulate appropriate treatment strategies.
