Use of telehealth simulation to teach the enhanced primary care RN role through community/public health-focused simulations.

America is facing a primary care provider shortage. Enhanced primary care RNs (EPC-RNs), registered nurses working at the top of their practice scope, can be an important part of community-based primary care provision. Typically, community health nursing education has not included primary care-based clinical experiences, and there is a clinical site shortage. Teaching students about EPC-RN roles can be an important domain of community/public health nursing education. Simulation is a creative pedagogical approach to learning about the EPC-RN role. The purpose of this manuscript is to 1) describe EPC-RN Telehealth Simulation development; and 2) describe student simulation feedback. Nursing faculty and simulation experts designed five simulations for community health students to teach about the EPC-RN role, incorporating recommendations from the Quad Council Coalition of Public Health Nursing Organizations community/public health nursing competencies and the National Competencies for Registered Nurses in Primary Care. Retrospective, descriptive quantitative, and qualitative student feedback data (n=519) was collected through QuestionPro over multiple semesters. Student feedback data demonstrated support of the use of the simulations in community/public health nursing education. The EPC-RN Telehealth Simulations prepared pre-licensure nursing students to practice in community-based primary care settings. Innovative, sustainable experiences such as this can improve community/public health nursing education.

The Global Impact of CEFR in Higher Education: A Case Study in Kazakhstan and Insights from a Pedagogical Experiment

The article explores the transformative impact of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) on global language pedagogy, with a particular focus on its implications for higher education and its application in Kazakhstan. Introduced by the Council of Europe in the early 2000s, the CEFR offers a comprehensive framework for language teaching, learning, and assessment, spanning six competency levels from A1 to C2. Its widespread adoption has reshaped language education policies and practices worldwide, emphasizing communication skills across reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The study investigates the evolution of the CEFR and its integration into higher education systems, examining its influence in countries such as the UK, Germany, France, and Canada. Notably, Kazakhstan has embraced the CEFR as a guiding framework for language instruction, aiming to enhance graduates’ employability in the international job market. Additionally, the article presents findings from a pedagogical experiment conducted at a Kazakhstani university, assessing the effectiveness of CEFR-aligned speaking assessment criteria in improving students’ proficiency. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative student feedback, highlighting the positive impact of aligning teaching strategies with the CEFR. Overall, the research contributes valuable insights into the practical application of the CEFR in Kazakhstani higher education and its broader implications for language instruction worldwide. Making a List: Teaching Prospecting in Sales Courses

The importance of prospecting cannot be overstated in the sales discipline. The authors introduce an exercise that allows students to develop this skill by identifying and developing a detailed prospecting list with data gleaned from real-world contact information. This project can be executed both stand-alone or as an introduction to a larger-scale sales project. Additionally, this project can be delivered beyond the classroom in a workshop-style format to assist student organizations/clubs achieve their goals (e.g., fundraising, corporate outreach). Empirical results are shared, as well as qualitative student feedback, to demonstrate the exercise’s effectiveness for teaching this vital concept.

Using Adult Learning Theory to Explore Student Perceptions of the Flipped Class Method

Flipped classes have been gaining in popularity in recent years, and yet only a handful of marketing education papers have examined flipped class methods. In a time when creative methods for engaging students online and in-person are critical, this study analyzes open-ended, qualitative student comments from a flipped class course to explore the benefits and drawbacks of this method. This paper will also examine the qualitative student feedback through the lens of adult learning theory (ALT) to see the ways in which student comments overlap with best practices in the adult learning field. Three sections of a business communication course were converted into a flipped class, and qualitative responses from 84 students were analyzed. This research will help fill a much-needed gap in the marketing education literature by providing key insights into flipped class approaches while also connecting them with ALTs, which have heretofore remained under-explored in marketing education.

Do Dictation Privileges Add Value to Radiology Electives If Medical Students Have Access to Online Modules?

Rationale and ObjectivesTraditional in-person medical student radiology electives are predominantly observerships. However, during the COVID-19 restrictions, many schools across Canada and the United States moved their radiology electives to an online format with great success. To the best of our knowledge, an evaluation of student experiences at a site where the 2-week on-site elective has both dictation privileges and an online component has not been completed. Materials and MethodsWe analyzed the pre- and post-test data from the online component of a radiology elective, retrieved the total number of dictation reports, and reviewed qualitative student feedback to gauge student engagement and learning. We used a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) to compare the difference between the student scores on pre- and postmodule section quizzes, accounting for individual and section-specific variation in performance. A second GLMM was fit to assess improvement in the cumulative test taken before and after the entire elective. Both models accounted for the potential benefit of dictation. ResultsStudent score improved significantly on the postsection tests (βpost = 15.9% ± 0.86% SE, P < 0.001) and on the final postelective test (βpost = 28.1% ± 1.8% SE, P < 0.001). The effect of total number of dictated studies on final test performance was not significant (βpost = 0.07% ± 0.07% SE, P = 0.317). ConclusionThis retrospective study suggests that resources should be directed to the development of mixed online/in-person electives for ideal student engagement at the senior medical student level. Further work must be completed to understand the potential benefits of, and barriers to, student dictation at the medical student level.

Interdisciplinary Pedagogy through Problem-Based Learning

This case study piloted an interdisciplinary Problem-Based Learning course, utilizing Hung’s (2006) 3C3R model. We explain the course design, curriculum, and implementation. We collected qualitative written questionnaires from students who participated in the course to investigate their learning experiences. As a result, students shed light on lessons they learned throughout the course, which led to the creation of a lessons learned guide for future instructors. This guide encompasses 8 lessons that were gleaned by both qualitative student feedback and instructor reflections from the course. These lessons include allocating in-class time to work on projects, using a modular approach in the course design, presenting students with real-life problems related to the topic of the course, providing in-class case studies for students to get acquainted with examples of previous work, grouping students from diverse academic backgrounds together when possible, utilizing online and librarian resources, surveying the classroom on their comfort with self-directed learning beforehand, and including a self-reflection piece at the end of the course.

Online interactive medical neuroimaging exercise to identify human brain structures

A persisting need remains for developing methods for inspiring and teaching undergraduate medical students to quickly learn to identify the hundreds of human brain structures, tracts and spaces that are clinically relevant (viewed as three-dimensional volumes or two-dimensional neuroimages), and to accomplish this with the option of virtual on-line methods. This notably includes teaching the essentials of recommended diagnostic radiology to allow students to be familiar with patient neuroimages routinely acquired using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). The present article includes a brief example video plus details a clinically oriented interactive neuroimaging exercise for first year medical students (MS1s) in small groups, conducted with instructors either in-person or as an entirely online virtual event. This “find-the-brain-structure” (FBS) event included teaching students to identify brain structures and other regions of interest in the central nervous system (and potentially in head and neck gross anatomy), which are traditionally taught using brain anatomy atlases and anatomical specimens. The interactive, small group exercise can be conducted in person or virtually on-line in as little as 30 min depending on the scope of objectives being covered. The learning exercise involves coordinated interaction between MS1s with one or several non-clinical faculty and may include one or several physicians (clinical faculty and/or qualified residents). It further allows for varying degrees of instructor interaction online and is easy to convey to instructors who do not have expertise in neuroimaging. Anonymous pre-event survey (n = 113, 100% response rate) versus post-event surveys (n = 92, 81% response rate) were attained from a cohort of MS1s in a neurobiology course. Results showed multiple statistically significant group-level shifts in response to several of the questions, showing an increase in MS1 confidence with reading MRI images (12% increase shift in mean, p < 0.001), confidence in their approaching physicians for medical training (9%, p < 0.01), and comfort levels in working online with virtual team-based peers and with team-based faculty (6%, p < 0.05). Qualitative student feedback revealed highly positive comments regarding the experience overall, encouraging this virtual medium as a desirable educational approach.

“Interacting with the material differently”: A mixed methods study exploring nursing student engagement and satisfaction with a flipped classroom approach

Engagement is critical for students to meet learning outcomes, yet modern classrooms face challenges with engagement when using a traditional didactic approach. Alternative options include using a flipped classroom where students review content prior to class, and teachers use in-class activities to increase application, analysis, and synthesis of information. This study aimed to (1) explore for changes in student engagement, and satisfaction, and achievement among students in a flipped classroom learning environment between mid and end of semester; and (2) to further explain quantitative results through qualitative student feedback. A convergent mixed methods design was used to recruit sixty-four nursing students in a Midwest U.S. College of Nursing, who completed a survey at mid and end of semester in the Fall of 2015. Students were also given the opportunity to participate in a focus group (n = 36) after the final survey. Most students were satisfied with the flipped classroom approach including before class materials, knowledge check quizzes using real-time response software, and the group test activity. However, participants were unsatisfied with reflective journal writing and group-based in class learning activities. Qualitative focus group data provided an explanation of quantitative results by identifying aspects of the flipped classroom viewed as helpful or not. Themes included small groups, enthusiastic teacher, repetition and application, doubling up on work, engaging, and dislike for course topic. More research is needed on pedogeological approaches to engage modern students, so they are prepared for nursing practice after graduation. The flipped classroom approach, which leverages multiple learning strategies, may be valuable to engage students and promote application of content.

Substance misuse training in pharmacy education: Results from a pilot study on the integration of an interprofessional experience

BackgroundStudies show that pharmacists are unsure in their ability to screen patients for substance abuse. This study evaluates the efficacy of incorporating interprofessional education (IPE) into a substance misuse training program on pharmacy students’ learning outcomes in providing screening and counseling for substance misuse. MethodsPharmacy students from 2019 to 2020 completed 3 substance misuse training modules. Students from the class of 2020 completed an additional IPE event. Both cohorts completed pre- and post-surveys that evaluated knowledge of content and comfort level with patient screening and counseling regarding substance misuse. Paired student t-tests and difference-in-difference analyses were used to evaluate the impact of the IPE event. FindingsBoth cohorts (n = 127) showed statistically significant improvement in learning outcomes in providing substance misuse screening and counseling. IPE yielded extremely positive feedback from all students, but its addition to the overall training did not improve learning outcomes. This may be attributed to the differences in baseline knowledge of each class cohort. ConclusionSubstance misuse training successfully improved pharmacy student knowledge and comfort level with providing patient screening and counseling services. Though the IPE event did not improve learning outcomes, qualitative student feedback was overwhelmingly positive and supports the continued incorporation of IPE.

Persuasion Invasion: An Educational Game for Teaching Productive Civil Discourse Skills

As civil discourse in America is becoming less substantive and respectful (Doherty et al., 2019), some educators have turned to educational games as a potential solution. However, due to the complexity the civic education space, games tend to focus on conceptual knowledge (e.g., the structure of government) rather than the practical skills students need to become productive and engaged citizens. Here we present Persuasion Invasion, an educational game that uses Value-Adaptive Instruction to help students learn to engage in productive civil discourse. Throughout the game, players learn about the values that underpin our beliefs and barriers to productive discourse (e.g., tribalism). Importantly, players also practice key civil discourse skills like identifying shared values across political lines and engaging in perspective taking. In this paper, we discuss the unique challenges of designing educational games in the civics domain, how we addressed those challenges, and how students responded to our design. Our results suggest that in-game practice was associated with improved learning outcomes on key discourse skill assessments. These results, coupled with qualitative student feedback, support the development of transformative and meaningful games in the civil discourse space.

Adapting an Undergraduate Summer Internship to a Virtual Format: Implementing a Mentored Cancer Research Experience to Meet Rising Demand for Flexible Learning Environments.

To meet the rising demand for flexible learning in data-driven health research, we adapted an in-person undergraduate research program (Quantitative Sciences Undergraduate Research Experience (QSURE)) to an all-virtual framework in summer 2020 and 2021. We used Web-conferencing and remote computing to implement virtual hands-on research training within a comprehensive cancer center. We designed the program to achieve research and career development goals: students completed faculty-mentored quantitative research projects and received education in the responsible conduct of research and practical skills, such as oral and written presentation. We assessed virtual program efficacy using pre- and post-program quantitative and qualitative student feedback. Eighteen students participated (nine each year); they reported high satisfaction with the virtual format. Compared with baseline, students reported improved perceived competence in quantitative skills and research knowledge post-program; these improvements were comparable to the in-person program. Defined benchmarks and consistent communication (with mentors, program directors, other students) were crucial to students' success; however, students noted challenges in building camaraderie online. With adequate resources, Web-based technology can be leveraged as an effective format for hands-on quantitative research training. Our framework can be tailored to an institution's needs, particularly those for which available resources better align with a virtual research program.

A multimodal interprofessional education program including case-based problem solving focused on pain management increases student’s knowledge and interprofessional skills

ABSTRACT Interprofessional education (IPE) activities are recommended to reflect current and future practice. The opioid epidemic is one of the most significant current health challenges; recently declared a United States public health crisis. Thus, an IPE program centered on interprofessional roles in pain management during the opioid crisis was developed at the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Professional students from pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant, and nurse anesthesia programs were included. The program included a lecture about each profession, small group case-based problem-solving sessions (group activity), and a panel discussion led by representative pain management experts from each profession. We conducted a retrospective review of data from 251 professional students attending the IPE program, and assessed students’ knowledge of each profession and their respective roles in pain management. We evaluated interprofessional skills using the Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey and gathered qualitative student feedback. Participants gained knowledge about other professions. Each represented profession had improvements in five constructs related to interprofessional skills. Students found the most value from the group activity, which encouraged interaction among professions. Overall, the program design was effective in enhancing student knowledge and attitudes regarding collaborative interprofessional team skills.

Curricular and Clinical Innovation Engaging Undergraduate Nursing Students to Build a Resilient Primary Care Workforce.

Primary care health settings provide access to services for underserved populations, yet baccalaureate (BSN)-prepared nurses are currently underutilized on the primary care health care team. BSN curricula often focus on acute care settings for clinical experiences, and students may not be aware of the scope and impact the RN has in a primary care setting. This gap in experiences may lead to overlooking primary care employment opportunities. The purpose of this article is to describe the development, implementation, and evaluation of an innovative course that builds the primary care nurse workforce capacity. An undergraduate elective course focusing on primary care didactic and clinical experiences was created. Qualitative student feedback regarding the course was positive, while quantitative data revealed an above-average course outcome rating. An effective intervention to increase workforce capacity in primary care settings is to immerse students in primary care concepts and experiences in a formal, combined didactic and clinical course.

The Need to Personalise Business Ethics Education

Can business ethics textbooks and modules prepare business students to manage ethical challenges if they bypass students’ personal ethics? This paper is an academic reflection by a Higher Education, business ethics tutor in the UK and Ireland. It charts a pedagogic journey of moving away from lecturing based on the contents of the standard, “impersonal”, business ethics textbook, to moving towards facilitating interaction among students about their ethics in all parts of life, and especially “at work” in their part-time employment. The rationale for this pedagogic shift is supported by excerpts from Journal of Business Ethics Education (JBEE) articles and by current, UK, Higher Education (HE), quality frameworks. Qualitative student feedback on their experience of this more personal design of a business ethics module is included. Ten exercise suggestions and resources are offered. Business ethics textbook authors and tutors are recommended to begin their content with exercises in personal ethics.

Visualization Design Sprints for Online and On-Campus Courses.

We present how to integrate Design Sprints and project-based learning into introductory visualization courses. A design sprint is a unique process based on rapid prototyping and user testing to define goals and validate ideas before starting costly development. The well-defined, interactive, and time-constrained design cycle makes design sprints a promising option for teaching project-based and active-learning-centered courses to increase student engagement and hands-on experience. Over the past five years, we have adjusted the design sprint methodology for teaching a range of visualization courses. We present a detailed guide on incorporating design sprints into large undergraduate and small professional development courses in both online and on-campus settings. Design sprint results, including quantitative and qualitative student feedback, show that design sprints engage students and help practice and apply visualization and design skills. We provide design sprint teaching materials, show examples of student-created work, and discuss limitations and lessons learned.

Exploring Tertiary Health Science Student Willingness or Resistance to Cultural Competency and Safety Pedagogy.

There is an increasing body of literature that considers the relevance and experiences of cultural competency and safety training in health professional students. However, less is written about Australian tertiary learners’ experiences of engaging with cultural competency training. The aim of this study is to explore tertiary students’ willingness or resistance to cultural competency and safety pedagogy. Qualitative student feedback to a teaching unit was collected and triangulated with data from focus groups with tutors. Results were thematically analyzed. Willingness and resistance to cultural competency and safety teaching emerged as two key themes. Willingness to engage with the unit was largely due to student interest in the content, teaching environment and relevance of cultural competency to students’ future practice. Resistance was linked to the students feeling personally attacked, or culturally confronted, with tutors noting the topics around sexuality and white privilege being more resisted. Acknowledging reasons for student resistance and developing strategies to reduce resistance can facilitate more student engagement with cultural competency topics, ultimately leading to their future provision of culturally competent healthcare.

The Effectiveness of Active Learning Approaches in a Pain Education Curriculum Within a Physical Therapy Program

Background and Purpose. Pain education within physical therapist educational programs needs to continually evolve to meet current best practice guidelines. This model presentation describes the successful implementation of a pain curriculum using various active learning approaches including VoiceThread assignments in an entry-level physical therapist educational program. Method/Model Description and Evaluation. An 8-week curriculum was developed to assist students in meeting the synthesis and evaluation learning objectives of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) curricular guidelines. Active learning homework assignments allowed students to practice communicating difficult pain principles while receiving constructive feedback. Course outcomes were measured through changes in a modified version of the Pain Attitude and Beliefs Scale (PABS), the Pain Care Confidence Scale (PCCS), qualitative student feedback, and performance on both practical and written examinations. Outcomes. All students passed the practical examination where they successfully demonstrated pain principle communication skills. The students showed less biomedical beliefs in 5 of the 7 PABS biomedical subscale questions and greater biopsychosocial beliefs in 2 of the 7 biopsychosocial subsections (P &lt; .05). Student scores on the PCCS also improved significantly (P &lt; .05) from 5.0 to 8.1 on the combined confidence level for treating patients in pain. Discussion and Conclusion. Implementation of the IASP curriculum within an entry-level physical therapist education program resulting in positive results in student learning and changing beliefs using a combined lecture and active learning approach.

A Strategy for Teaching Health Literacy to Physician Assistant Students.

This brief report presents a model that incorporates an analogous “see-one,” “do-one,” “teach-one” pedagogical strategy and experiential learning for mastery of health literacy principles by first-year Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies students. Students completed a series of health literacy activities including classroom-based lecture (see-one), hands-on application of health literacy activities (do-one), and application and peer-instruction of health literacy best practices with other health science students (teach-one) as part of a two-semester hands-on learning experience. A health literacy knowledge examination, qualitative student feedback, and faculty review of content application were used to assess for effectiveness. Students demonstrated a significant and sustained positive change in knowledge examination scores complemented by positive faculty poster review. Physician Assistant student health literacy knowledge is increased and sustained after application of see-one, do-one, teach-one strategy with students demonstrating health literacy considerations in real-client application during experiential learning. Education programs seeking to meet the call for health professionals prepared to address gaps in health literacy should consider a see-one, do-one, teach-one and experiential learning approach over multiple semesters. Increasing Medical Student Exposure to Pathology by Creating an Integrated Rotation During Surgery Clerkship

Following a nationwide trend, the University of Michigan Medical School has restructured its curriculum to facilitate integration of basic science curricula and early inclusion of clinical experiences, resulting in a truncation of a 19-month didactic-based preclinical curriculum to 13 months. Because preclinical didactic and lab sessions formed the bulk of pathology contact hours, the curriculum overhaul significantly reduced student exposure to pathologists. This reduction in exposure may decrease student understanding of how pathology integrates into the larger picture of healthcare delivery and could also decrease the pipeline of students interested in pursuing pathology as a career choice. To ameliorate these concerns, a mandatory 1-week rotation through the Pathology Department was integrated into the surgery clerkship. This brief report outlines the process of creating a new, unique pathology rotation for surgery clerkship students that includes observation in autopsy and surgical pathology sign-out, small group sessions focused on foundational concepts in microbiology, chemistry, and transfusion medicine, and access to online case-based modules. Available qualitative student feedback indicates that students appreciate how this rotation granted them a “behind the scenes” look at pathology but also noted that the fast pace of clinical sign-out sessions and length of small group sessions were suboptimal for student learning. This feedback and future survey data will serve as a platform on which curricular improvements can be made to enhance the learning environment for both learners and educators.

Drawing in Veterinary Anatomy Education: What Do Students Use It For?

In contrast to medical education, information on the use of arts as a learning approach is scarce in veterinary anatomy. The aim of this prospective, questionnaire-based study was to survey students' use of drawing in various aspects of veterinary anatomy learning (self-study, examinations, preparation for, and reflection on cadaver dissection). The quantitative data showed that first-year students with artistic preferences used drawing significantly more often in most aspects of anatomy learning than students with no such preferences, apart from the reported use of drawing in examinations and for reflection after cadaver dissection. The lack of significant correlations of the reported use of drawing in examinations with any other study variable provided support for the author's observation that student-generated drawings are not as commonly used in examinations as previously. In contrast to the study hypothesis, previous university studies did not correlate significantly with any aspect of the use of drawing in anatomy learning. None of the reported uses of drawing addressed the benefits of drawing in learning the comparative anatomy of animal species, a characteristic distinguishing veterinary anatomy from human anatomy. Qualitative student feedback indicated that encouragement and teacher-produced images would increase the use of drawing as a learning approach even if the implementation of drawing into the curriculum is not feasible. Conclusions from this study were implemented through self-directed learning in anatomy courses that replaced the canceled cadaveric dissections during the COVID-19 outbreak and also through the ongoing drawing workshops to further advance the use of drawing in veterinary anatomy learning.
