Discussion on the species and naming of medical bamboo slips unearthed from Han tomb in Laoguanshan

920 pieces of bamboo slip, including broken bamboo slips, found in Laoguanshan Han tomb, are placed in two locations. In one of the location, 736 pieces, except 20 pieces of " chi jian" , of medical bamboo slips are stored. The Chengdu Municipal Institute of Archaeology and Cultural Relics Protection Center of Jingzhou preliminary sorted out these pieces and tentatively give them the names: Wu se mai zang lun, Bi xi yi lun, Mai si hou, Liu shi bing fang, Bing yuan lun, Zhu bing zheng hou, Jing mai shu, Gui mai shu. Through our comprehensive reading, font comparison, comparison of the contents, and investigation on the texts, it was suggested that the batch of medical slips might be divided into nine kinds of documents, namely, Bi xi zhen fa, Zhen zhi lun, Liu shi bing fang, Zhu bing yi, Zhu bing er, Shi er mai, Bie mai, Ci shu, Ni shun wu se mai zang yan jing shen.

Assessment and retrofitting solutions for an historical wooden pavilion in China

Feiyun Pavilion is located in Shanxi Province, China. It is a classic example of ancient wooden pavilions and one of the primary national cultural assets, which was rebuilt more than 500years ago. During recent years, the structural deterioration and degeneration of Feiyun Pavilion have accelerated due to inefficiencies in maintenance and management. The main structure is apparently off-plumb and in danger of collapse. With special financial required, the state Administration of Cultural Heritage asked the local Cultural Relic Protection Unit to contact historians, researchers, and engineers to restore this particular ancient structure. This paper presents the necessary assessment data, evaluation method, and the preferred solution for retrofitting and strengthening this historical timber building.

Chinese fossil protection law and the illegal export of vertebrate fossils from china

ABSTRACTThe relevant legislation regarding fossil protection in the People's Republic of China is reviewed, with particular emphasis on the aspects of illegal excavation and export of vertebrate fossils contained within the 1982 Cultural Relics Protection Law and in the current legislation as of 2010–2013. Guidelines for how to follow procedures to stay within the law are given for the assistance of international researchers wishing to work on Chinese specimens with a collaborating Chinese institution.

A Novel Modified Algorithm for Local Statistic Enhancement

Image repair using the digital image processing technology has become a new hot point in the cultural relic protection. To study of ancient fresco restoration techniques, A novel algorithm of local statistic enhancement image is proposed in this paper for the reparation of ancient fresco. The modified amplified function and the rubber band conversion algorithm are used as the jugement criterion, and the optimal paremeters are searched by the genetic algorithm (GA). Case Study of Colonial Building Restoration in China: Astor House Hotel Protective Restoration Project

Astor House Hotel is China's earliest foreign-related hotel, a national key historical relic preservation unit, and one of the last remaining examples of colonial architectures in Tianjin. The early architectural form of the old building was a typical representation of Tianjin's British concession, with a high degree of international popularity. The remarkable historical evolution of the hotel over the past 150 years made this restoration project important, and the construction research and design, being extremely complex, aroused the great attention of the government, cultural relic protection agency, academic circle, non-governmental organizations, and the public. Thus, the protective restoration objectives, methods, and processes were of high sensitivity. The restoration design took into comprehensive consideration various factors, focusing on the hotel's historical value and symbolic significance as a typical representation of China's earliest foreign-related hotel and early colonial buildings. Based on multidimensional historical research on the hotel, The design restored the appearance of the hotel's old building to the state of the original period. The restoration project also used proper technology to enhance the security of the old building. The hotel's historical and cultural value and aesthetic significance was enhanced comprehensively through spatial representation, functional improvement, and rational organization of the cultural relic exhibition.

新疆艺术中心两幅珍贵丙烯画——《天山健儿》、《歌舞之乡》的表面已经受到涂料、沥青、粘结剂等污染，本文利用材料学为修复基础知识，依据文物古迹保护准则为保护指导方向，通过红外光谱确定污染物的种类，进一步探讨污染物以及丙烯颜料的化学性质和物理性质，为了能够更好地清洗该宝贵丙烯画表面的污染物提供科学数据和技术支持，使今后丙烯画的加固、修复、馆藏等后续保护工作得到不断完善。 There are two precious propylene-paintings named “The Snow Mountain Athletes” and “The Town of Song and Dance” in the Xinjiang art center, whose surface has been polluted by the coating, the asphalt and the binder. In this paper, using the basic knowledge of material science and the basis of cultural relics protection standards for the protection guidance, the type of pollutants was determined by the infrared spectrum, and the pollutants’ chemical and physical properties of the acrylic paint are further discussed, which will be able to promote better cleaning the pollutants on the surface of the precious propylene-painting and to provide scientific data and technical support for the protection of the propylene-painting. The reinforcement, repair and collection management of the propylene-painting will be improved.

Stability Analysis of Xiping Hotel Iron Sites Based on Expansive Soil and Steep Slope

Xiping iron smelting site is the fourth installment of the national key cultural relics protection units. The protective house is surrounded by water, with its base on expansive soil. With the influence of the slide of dams during the flood season, a lot of cracks occur in the protective house and its surrounding, resulting in severe potential danger to iron smelting site. The effect of expansive soil, steep slope reservoir and rainfall on house deformation is analyzed, qualitative and quantitative analysis on slope stability is conducted, results indicates that the protective house will be damaged under rainstorm or continuous precipitation, basic stability will be lose under natural condition.

A study of Tung-oil–lime putty—A traditional lime based mortar

Tung-oil-lime mortar is a special organic–inorganic binding material invented by the ancient Chinese people. It was widely used in wooden ship and special moisture-proof structures of ancient buildings due to its good sealing and waterproof performances. As a traditional binding material, tung-oil–lime mortar would have a bright applicative prospect in protection of cultural relics. In this paper, the formula, performances and mechanism of tung-oil–lime mortar are discussed. The results show that the mortar prepared by tung-oil with calcium hydroxide has better mechanical properties, water-resistivity and weather resistance than common lime mortar. The effective compositions of tung-oil–lime mortar were carboxylic acid calcium, curing tung-oil and calcium hydroxide. And these good performances of tung-oil–lime mortar come from the compact structure which is established through coordination reaction of Ca2+ from the Ca(OH)2 and the oxidation aggregation reaction of CåC double bonds in unsaturated fatty acid.

A calibration method of lens distortion for line scan cameras

We present a practical method to calibrate the lens distortion in line scan cameras. The distortion correction software based on this method has been designed and implemented in the digital protection of cultural relics. In this paper, a lens distortion model which applies to line scan cameras is derived from the widely used array camera distortion model. Then, a new calibration method which utilizes the imaging characteristic of equidistant collinear feature points is proposed to calibrate the model. Experiment results show the proposed calibration method is stable and effective.

Geological Protection Project of the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang

This paper starting with the analysis of weathering actuality of Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, combined with the result of geological hazard investigation of 3 caverns ( Qianxi temple, HuangPuGong cave and Lu hole ), divides the damage effects of Longmen Grottoes into mechanics effect, chemical effect and biology effect, then analyses the geological condition and the solution to protect caverns, and proposes a geological protection project for this kind of stone cultural relics. So as to this paper can provide reference to the similar stone cultural relics protection works.

On Fire Protection Problems and its Countermeasures about Chinese Ancient Architecture

The most ancient buildings of China are formed by wooden elements, such as columns, beams, so they are prone to fire and are difficult to fire control due to the lack of fire channel. The cause of the fire includes two aspects of human and nature. The basic countermeasures of ancient building fire mainly include display in such aspects as opening fire channels, doing well the construction of fire water sources, the use of advanced fire protection technology, managing the fire of life and maintenance strictly and so on. The Research for the Environment Renewal of Red Buildings in the Marshal Zhang’ Mansion Memorial

The Red Buildings is going to be incorporated into the Marshal Zhang’ Mansion memorial which exhibits as the State-level key cultural relics protection unit. It will be an important component of the whole exhibition. We based the design on the research of design orientation and function conversion. After studied the history of the buildings and analyzed the differences between the old and the new functions, we made a principle of less change. First, we set two different routes for the visitors and the vehicles in the Red Building. And the visitors’ route was connected whit the tour route of Marshal Zhang’ Mansion memorial closely. Second, we set up one tour axis with four landscape nodes and two landscape axes inside the Red Buildings. They will outstanding original condition and show nice scenes of the whole buildings to visitors.

Influence of music performance on Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

Currently, many heritage buildings have been converted into music performance venues. Performing at ultra high sound pressure has induced coupled vibration of building elements which should be of protected, then caused irreversible damage of them after a certain time, such that application requirements and cultural relic protection formed an inevitable contradiction. Research on a case study of Guangzhou's Sun Yat - sen Memorial Hall in China demonstrated that music performance has little impact on the structure safety but a passive influence on some heritage building elements like colored glass and some murals, gave a reference for selection and design of damping measures, and at the same time pointed out that some issues required further study in this area.

Research on Three-Dimensional Digitization Method of General Cliff Petroglyph in Lianyungang City

Three-dimensional laser scanner is adopted to protect and study on Lianyungang City General Cliff petroglyph by institute of key cultural relics protection. Through the high-precision scanning by Surphaser for important locations, including the faces, crops, chessboard, milky way, meridian, society, the Sun and so on, three-dimensional dates of 22 stations were obtained. After splicing these points cloud by Leica Cyclone, AVI video was generated on the basis of development path of camera, and a complete animation video was obtained by video editing software at last. The results show that three-dimensional laser scanner can be used for fast, accurate completion of rock digital and the effect on the conservation and research of cultural relics protection is very favorable.
