Secondary Organic Aerosol from OH-Initiated Oxidation of Mixtures of d-Limonene and β-Myrcene.

The chemical composition and physical properties of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) generated through OH-initiated oxidation of mixtures containing β-myrcene, an acyclic monoterpene, and d-limonene, a cyclic monoterpene, were investigated to assess the extent of the chemical interactions between their oxidation products. The SOA samples were prepared in an environmental smog chamber, and their composition was analyzed offline using ultraperformance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-HRMS). Our results suggested that SOA containing β-myrcene showed a higher proportion of oligomeric compounds with low volatility compared to that of SOA from d-limonene. The formula distribution and signal intensities of the mixed SOA could be accurately predicted by a linear combination of the mass spectra of the SOA from individual precursors. Effects of cross-reactions were observed in the distribution of isomeric oxidation products within the mixed SOA, as made evident by chromatographic analysis. On the whole, β-myrcene and d-limonene appear to undergo oxidation by OH largely independently from each other, with only subtle effects from cross-reactions influencing the yields of specific oxidation products.

Evaporation-Induced Transformations in Volatile Chemical Product-Derived Secondary Organic Aerosols: Browning Effects and Alterations in Oxidative Reactivity.

Volatile chemical products (VCPs) are increasingly recognized as significant sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in urban atmospheres, potentially serving as key precursors for secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. This study investigates the formation and physicochemical transformations of VCP-derived SOA, produced through ozonolysis of VOCs evaporated from a representative room deodorant air freshener, focusing on the effects of aerosol evaporation on its molecular composition, light absorption properties, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Following aerosol evaporation, solutes become concentrated, accelerating reactions within the aerosol matrix that lead to a 42% reduction in peroxide content and noticeable browning of the SOA. This process occurs most effectively at moderate relative humidity (∼40%), reaching a maximum solute concentration before aerosol solidification. Molecular characterization reveals that evaporating VCP-derived SOA produces highly conjugated nitrogen-containing products from interactions between existing or transformed carbonyl compounds and reduced nitrogen species, likely acting as chromophores responsible for the observed brownish coloration. Additionally, the reactivity of VCP-derived SOA was elucidated through heterogeneous oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2), which revealed enhanced photosensitized sulfate production upon drying. Direct measurements of ROS, including singlet oxygen (1O2), superoxide (O2•-), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH), showed higher abundances in dried versus undried SOA samples under light exposure. Our findings underscore that drying significantly alters the physicochemical properties of VCP-derived SOA, impacting their roles in atmospheric chemistry and radiative balance.

Chemical Composition and Optical Properties of Secondary Organic Aerosol from Photooxidation of Volatile Organic Compound Mixtures.

The chemical and optical properties of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) have been widely studied through environmental chamber experiments, and some of the results have been parametrized in atmospheric models to help understand their radiative effects and climate influence. While most chamber studies investigate the aerosol formed from a single volatile organic compound (VOC), the potential interactions between reactive intermediates derived from VOC mixtures are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the SOA formed from pure and mixtures of anthropogenic (phenol and 1-methylnaphthalene) and/or biogenic (longifolene) VOCs using continuous-flow, high-NOx photooxidation chamber experiments to better mimic ambient conditions. SOA optical properties, including single scattering albedo (SSA), mass absorption coefficient (MAC), and refractive index (RI) at 375 nm, and chemical composition, including the formation of oxygenated organic compounds, organic-nitrogen compounds (including organonitrates and nitro-organics), and the molecular structure of the major chromophores, were explored. Additionally, the imaginary refractive index values of SOA in the multi-VOC system were predicted using a linear-combination assumption and compared with the measured values. When two VOCs were oxidized simultaneously, we found evidence for changes in SOA chemical composition compared to SOA formed from single-VOC systems, and this change led to nonlinear effects on SOA optical properties. The nonlinear effects were found to vary between different systems.

Aging effects on residential biomass burning emissions under quasi-real atmospheric conditions

Emissions from biomass burning (BB) vastly contribute to the atmospheric trace gases and particles, which affect air quality and human health. After emission, the chemical evolution changes the mass and composition of organic aerosol (OA) in the diluted and aged plume. In this study, we used a quasi-real atmospheric smog chamber system to conduct aging experiments and investigated the multiphase oxidation of primary organic aerosol (POA) and the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in residential biomass burning plumes. We found that the emissions in the gas and particle phases were interlinked during the plume evolution. During photochemical aging, more oxidized OA was produced, and SOA formation increased by a factor of 2 due to functionalization reactions of gaseous precursors such as furans, phenols, and carbonyls. On the other hand, dark aging resulted in a lower OA mass enhancement by a factor of 1.2, with weaker oxidation from gaseous reactions. Dark aging experiments resulted in the generation of substantial quantities of nitrogen-containing organic compounds in both gas and particulate phases, while photochemical aging led to a notable increase in the concentration of gaseous carboxylic acids. Our observations show that the properties of SOA are influenced by exposure to sunlight radiation and oxidants such as OH or NO3 radicals. These results reflect the aging process of BB plumes in real-world atmospheric conditions and highlight the importance of considering various aging mechanisms.

Combined Smog Chamber/Oxidation Flow Reactor Study on Aging of Secondary Organic Aerosol from Photooxidation of Aromatic Hydrocarbons.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is a significant component of atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and their physicochemical properties can be significantly changed in the aging process. In this study, we used a combination consisting of a smog chamber (SC) and oxidation flow reactor (OFR) to investigate the continuous aging process of gas-phase organic intermediates and SOA formed from the photooxidation of toluene, a typical aromatic hydrocarbon. Our results showed that as the OH exposure increased from 2.6 × 1011 to 6.3 × 1011 molecules cm-3 s (equivalent aging time of 2.01-4.85 days), the SOA mass concentration (2.9 ± 0.05-28.7 ± 0.6 μg cm-3) and corrected SOA yield (0.073-0.26) were significantly enhanced. As the aging process proceeds, organic acids and multiple oxygen-containing oxidation products are continuously produced from the photochemical aging process of gas-phase organic intermediates (mainly semi-volatile and intermediate volatility species, S/IVOCs). The multigeneration oxidation products then partition to the aerosol phase, while functionalization of SOA rather than fragmentation dominated in the photochemical aging process, resulting in much higher SOA yield after aging compared to that in the SC. Our study indicates that SOA yields as a function of OH exposure should be considered in air quality models to improve SOA simulation, and thus accurately assess the impact on SOA properties and regional air quality.

Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation from Volatile Chemical Product Emissions: Model Parameters and Contributions to Anthropogenic Aerosol.

Volatile chemical products (VCP) are an increasingly important source of hydrocarbon and oxygenated volatile organic compound (OVOC) emissions to the atmosphere, and these emissions are likely to play an important role as anthropogenic precursors for secondary organic aerosol (SOA). While the SOA from VCP hydrocarbons is often accounted for in models, the formation, evolution, and properties of SOA from VCP OVOCs remain uncertain. We use environmental chamber data and a kinetic model to develop SOA parameters for 10 OVOCs representing glycols, glycol ethers, esters, oxygenated aromatics, and amines. Model simulations suggest that the SOA mass yields for these OVOCs are of the same magnitude as widely studied SOA precursors (e.g., long-chain alkanes, monoterpenes, and single-ring aromatics), and these yields exhibit a linear correlation with the carbon number of the precursor. When combined with emissions inventories for two megacities in the United States (US) and a US-wide inventory, we find that VCP VOCs react with OH to form 0.8-2.5× as much SOA, by mass, as mobile sources. Hydrocarbons (terpenes, branched and cyclic alkanes) and OVOCs (terpenoids, glycols, glycol ethers) make up 60-75 and 25-40% of the SOA arising from VCP use, respectively. This work contributes to the growing body of knowledge focused on studying VCP VOC contributions to urban air pollution.

Methodological advances to improve repeatability of SOA generation in environmental chambers

Most laboratory atmospheric chamber studies probing the chemical and physical properties of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) perform such experiments with mixing ratios of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) above atmospheric relevance (≳50 ppbv). When performing ozonolysis of biogenic VOCs at mixing ratios of atmospheric relevance (≲10 ppbv), a major hinderance on the repeatability of replicate experiments is due to the limitations of conventional VOC injection techniques. To overcome these limitations, two novel components (stop/flow and split valves) were embedded in a conventional VOC injection setup, thereby permitting the use of higher VOC volumes of injection to attain low VOC mixing ratios, and the delivery of the VOC to the environmental chamber as a short, discrete pulse for subsequent reaction. Implementation of these novel VOC injection components has resulted in improvements in variability between replicate chamber experiments of up to a factor of 7 with respect to particle number, mass, and size distributions at both high and low VOC mixing ratios (50 and 10 ppbv, respectively). These improvements permit extension of quantitative measurements of SOA formation to VOC mixing ratios at or near atmospheric levels, where new particle formation (NPF) and SOA mass loading are typically within experimental variability.

Photoaging of phenolic secondary organic aerosol in the aqueous phase: evolution of chemical and optical properties and effects of oxidants

Abstract. While gas-phase reactions are well established to have significant impacts on the mass concentration, chemical composition, and optical properties of secondary organic aerosol (SOA), the aqueous-phase aging of SOA remains poorly understood. In this study, we performed a series of long-duration photochemical aging experiments to investigate the evolution of the composition and light absorption of the aqueous SOA (aqSOA) from guaiacyl acetone (GA), a semivolatile phenolic carbonyl that is common in biomass burning smoke. The aqSOA was produced from reactions of GA with hydroxyl radical (•OH-aqSOA) or a triplet excited state of organic carbon (3C∗-aqSOA) and was then photoaged in water under conditions that simulate sunlight exposure in northern California for up to 48 h. The effects of increasing aqueous-phase •OH or 3C∗ concentration on the photoaging of the aqSOA were also studied. High-resolution aerosol mass spectrometry (HR-AMS) and UV–Vis spectroscopy were utilized to characterize the composition and the light absorptivity of the aqSOA and to track their changes during aging. Compared to •OH-aqSOA, the 3C∗-aqSOA is produced more rapidly and shows less oxidation, a greater abundance of oligomers, and higher light absorption. Prolonged photoaging promotes fragmentation and the formation of more volatile and less light-absorbing products. More than half of the initial aqSOA mass is lost, and substantial photobleaching occurs after 10.5 h of prolonged aging under simulated sunlight illumination for 3C∗-aqSOA and 48 h for •OH-aqSOA. By performing positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis of the combined HR-AMS and UV–Vis spectral data, we resolved three generations of aqSOA with distinctly different chemical and optical properties. The first-generation aqSOA shows significant oligomer formation and enhanced light absorption at 340–400 nm. The second-generation aqSOA is enriched in functionalized GA species and has the highest mass absorption coefficients in 300–500 nm, while the third-generation aqSOA contains more fragmented products and is the least light absorbing. These results suggest that intermediately aged phenolic aqSOA is more light absorbing than other generations, and that the light absorptivity of phenolic aqSOA results from a competition between brown carbon (BrC) formation and photobleaching, which is dependent on aging time. Although photoaging generally increases the oxidation of aqSOA, a slightly decreased O/C of the •OH-aqSOA is observed after 48 h of prolonged photoaging with additional •OH exposure. This is likely due to greater fragmentation and evaporation of highly oxidized compounds. Increased oxidant concentration accelerates the transformation of aqSOA and promotes the decay of BrC chromophores, leading to faster mass reduction and photobleaching. In addition, compared with •OH, photoaging by 3C∗ produces more low-volatility functionalized products, which counterbalances part of the aqSOA mass loss due to fragmentation and evaporation.

Insect Infestation Increases Viscosity of Biogenic Secondary Organic Aerosol.

Plant stress alters emissions of volatile organic compounds. However, little is known about how this could influence climate-relevant properties of secondary organic aerosol (SOA), particularly from complex mixtures such as real plant emissions. In this study, the chemical composition and viscosity were examined for SOA generated from real healthy and aphid-stressed Canary Island pine (Pinus canariensis) trees, which are commonly used for landscaping in Southern California. Healthy Canary Island pine (HCIP) and stressed Canary Island pine (SCIP) aerosols were generated in a 5 m3 environmental chamber at 35-84% relative humidity and room temperature via OH-initiated oxidation. Viscosities of the collected particles were measured using an offline poke-flow method, after conditioning the particles in a humidified air flow. SCIP particles were consistently more viscous than HCIP particles. The largest differences in particle viscosity were observed in particles conditioned at 50% relative humidity where the viscosity of SCIP particles was an order of magnitude larger than that of HCIP particles. The increased viscosity for the aphid-stressed pine tree SOA was attributed to the increased fraction of sesquiterpenes in the emission profile. The real pine SOA particles, both healthy and aphid-stressed, were more viscous than α-pinene SOA particles, demonstrating the limitation of using a single monoterpene as a model compound to predict the physicochemical properties of real biogenic SOA. However, synthetic mixtures composed of only a few major compounds present in emissions (<10 compounds) can reproduce the viscosities of SOA observed from the more complex real plant emissions.

Water Plays Multifunctional Roles in the Intervening Formation of Secondary Organic Aerosols in Ozonolysis of Limonene: A Valence Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory Study

Although water may affect aqueous aerosol chemistry, how it intervenes in the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) at the molecular level remains elusive. Ozonolysis of limonene is one of the most important sources of indoor SOAs. Here, we report the valence electronic properties of limonene aerosols and SOAs derived from limonene ozonolysis (Lim-SOAs) via aerosol vacuum ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, with a focus on the effects of water on Lim-SOAs. The first vertical ionization energy of limonene aerosols is measured to be 8.79 ± 0.07 eV. While water significantly increases the total photoelectron yield of Lim-SOAs, three photoelectron features attributable to Lim-SOAs each exhibit distinct dependence on the fraction of water in aerosols, implying that different formation pathways and molecular origins are involved in the formation of Lim-SOAs. Combined with density functional theory calculation and mass spectrometry measurements, this study reveals that water, particularly the water dimer, enhances the formation of Lim-SOAs by altering the ozonolysis energetics and pathways by intervening in its Criegee chemistry, acting as both a catalyst and a reactant. The atmospheric implication is discussed.

Non-linear effects of secondary organic aerosol formation and properties in multi-precursor systems

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) contributes significantly to ambient fine particulate matter that affects climate and human health. Monoterpenes represent an important class of biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their oxidation by nitrate radicals poses a substantial source of SOA globally. Here, we investigate the formation and properties of SOA from nitrate radical oxidation of two common monoterpenes, α-pinene and limonene. When two monoterpenes are oxidized simultaneously, we observe a ~50% enhancement in the formation of SOA from α-pinene and a ~20% reduction in limonene SOA formation. The change in SOA yields is accompanied by pronounced changes in aerosol chemical composition and volatility. These non-linear effects are not observed in a sequential oxidation experiment. Our results highlight that unlike currently assumed in atmospheric models, the interaction of products formed from individual VOCs should be accounted for to accurately describe SOA formation and its climate and health impacts.

Ozonolysis of α-Pinene and Δ3-Carene Mixtures: Formation of Dimers with Two Precursors.

The formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) from the structurally similar monoterpenes, α-pinene and Δ3-carene, differs substantially. The aerosol phase is already complex for a single precursor, and when mixtures are oxidized, products, e.g., dimers, may form between different volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This work investigates whether differences in SOA formation and properties from the oxidation of individual monoterpenes persist when a mixture of the monoterpenes is oxidized. Ozonolysis of α-pinene, Δ3-carene, and a 1:1 mixture of them was performed in the Aarhus University Research on Aerosol (AURA) atmospheric simulation chamber. Here, ∼100 ppb of monoterpene was oxidized by 200 ppb O3 under dark conditions at 20 °C. The particle number concentration and particle mass concentration for ozonolysis of α-pinene exceed those from ozonolysis of Δ3-carene alone, while their mixture results in concentrations similar to α-pinene ozonolysis. Detailed offline analysis reveals evidence of VOC-cross-product dimers in SOA from ozonolysis of the monoterpene mixture: a VOC-cross-product dimer likely composed of the monomeric units cis-caric acid and 10-hydroxy-pinonic acid and a VOC-cross-product dimer ester likely from the monomeric units caronaldehyde and terpenylic acid were tentatively identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. To improve the understanding of chemical mechanisms determining SOA, it is relevant to identify VOC-cross-products.

Effects of NO2 and RH on secondary organic aerosol formation and light absorption from OH oxidation of ο-xylene

Ο-xylene is an important aromatic volatile organic compound (VOC) in the atmosphere over urban areas. In this work, the effect of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentration and relative humidity (RH) on the mass concentration of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) formed from ο-xylene OH oxidization was investigated in a photooxidation chamber. The ο-xylene SOA mass concentration increased from 54.2 μg m−3 to 127.2 μg m−3 during dry conditions, but decreased from 177.7 μg m−3 to 146.5 μg m−3 during high RH conditions when the initial NO2 concentration increased form 0 ppbv to about 900 ppbv. An increase in the ratio of [NO3−]/[Org] and a decrease in the oxidation state of carbon (OSC) of SOA suggested that acid-catalyzed heterogeneous reaction was responsible for enhancing SOA formation with increasing NO2 concentrations in dry conditions. In contrast, in humid conditions, the high molecular diffusion capacity of SOA could promote the reactivity of OH towards the interior of SOA, and the enhancement of nitrous acid (HONO) formation under high NO2 conditions could promote the SOA aging processes and be responsible for the decreasing trend of SOA formation with NO2. Light absorption by SOA was also measured, and both NO2 and RH enhanced the mass absorption coefficient (MACλ = 365 nm) value for the optical properties of ο-xylene SOA. The highest MACλ = 365 nm value of ο-xylene SOA was 0.89 m2 g−1, observed during humid conditions with an initial NO2 concentration of 862 ppbv, which was 3.9 times higher than in the experiment conducted in the absence of NO2 under dry conditions. The formation of nitrogen-containing organic compounds (NOCs) and humic-like substances (HULIS) were responsible for the increased MACλ = 365 nm values of ο-xylene derived SOA. This study provides new insight into the effect of NO2 on SOA formation through the change in ο-xylene photooxidation under different RH conditions, and the complex effect of multiple environmental factors on SOA formation was also important and should not be ignored.

Initial pH Governs Secondary Organic Aerosol Phase State and Morphology after Uptake of Isoprene Epoxydiols (IEPOX).

Aerosol acidity increases secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed from the reactive uptake of isoprene-derived epoxydiols (IEPOX) by enhancing condensed-phase reactions within sulfate-containing submicron particles, leading to low-volatility organic products. However, the link between the initial aerosol acidity and the resulting physicochemical properties of IEPOX-derived SOA remains uncertain. Herein, we show distinct differences in the morphology, phase state, and chemical composition of individual organic-inorganic mixed particles after IEPOX uptake to ammonium sulfate particles with different initial atmospherically relevant acidities (pH = 1, 3, and 5). Physicochemical properties were characterized via atomic force microscopy coupled with photothermal infrared spectroscopy (AFM-PTIR) and Raman microspectroscopy. Compared to less acidic particles (pH 3 and 5), reactive uptake of IEPOX to the most acidic particles (pH 1) resulted in 50% more organosulfate formation, clearer phase separation (core-shell), and more irregularly shaped morphologies, suggesting that the organic phase transitioned to semisolid or solid. This study highlights that initial aerosol acidity may govern the subsequent aerosol physicochemical properties, such as viscosity and morphology, following the multiphase chemical reactions of IEPOX. These results can be used in future studies to improve model parameterizations of SOA formation from IEPOX and its properties, toward the goal of bridging predictions and atmospheric observations.

Determination of Volatility Parameters of Secondary Organic Aerosol Components via Thermal Analysis

To date, there are limited data on the thermal properties of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) components. In this study, we employed an experimental method to evaluate the physical properties of some atmospherically relevant compounds. We estimated the thermodynamic properties of SOA components, in particularly some carboxylic acids. The molar heat capacity, melting point and enthalpy, and vaporization enthalpy of the samples were determined via differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, and their vaporization enthalpy (ΔHvap) was estimated using Clausius–Clapeyron and Langmuir equations based on their thermogravimetric profiles. The thermodynamic properties of benzoic acid as a reference compound agree well with the reported values. The obtained specific heat capacities of benzoic acid, phthalic acid, pinic acid, ketopinic acid, cis-pinonic acid, terpenylic acid and diaterpenylic acid acetate (DTAA) are 118.1, 169.4, 189.9, 223.9, 246.1, 223.2, and 524.1 J mol−1 K−1, respectively. The ΔHvap of benzoic acid, phthalic acid, ketopinic acid, DTAA, and 3-methylbutane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid (3-MBTCA) are 93.2 ± 0.4, 131.6, 113.8, and 124.4 kJ mol−1, respectively. The melting and vaporization enthalpies of the SOA components range from 7.3 to 29.7 kJ mol−1.

Optical Properties of Secondary Organic Aerosol Produced by Photooxidation of Naphthalene under NOx Condition.

Secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) affect incoming solar radiation by interacting with light at ultraviolet and visible wavelength ranges. However, the relationship between the chemical composition and optical properties of SOA is still not well understood. In this study, the complex refractive index (RI) of SOA produced from OH oxidation of naphthalene in the presence of nitrogen oxides (NOx) was retrieved online in the wavelength range of 315–650 nm and the bulk chemical composition of the SOA was characterized by an online high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer. In addition, the molecular-level composition of brown carbon chromophores was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a photodiode array detector and a high-resolution mass spectrometer. The real part of the RI of the SOA increases with both the NOx/naphthalene ratio and aging time, likely due to the increased mean polarizability and decreased molecular weight due to fragmentation. Highly absorbing nitroaromatics (e.g., C6H5NO4, C7H7NO4, C7H5NO5, C8H5NO5) produced under higher NOx conditions contribute significantly to the light absorption of the SOA. The imaginary part of the RI linearly increases with the NOx/VOCs ratio due to the formation of nitroaromatic compounds. As a function of aging, the imaginary RI increases with the O/C ratio (slope = 0.024), mainly attributed to the achieved higher NOx/VOCs ratio, which favors the formation of light-absorbing nitroaromatics. The light-absorbing enhancement is not as significant with extensive aging as it is under a lower aging time due to the opening of aromatic rings by reactions.

Secondary organic aerosol formation from camphene oxidation: measurements and modeling

Abstract. While camphene is one of the dominant monoterpenes measured in biogenic and pyrogenic emission samples, oxidation of camphene has not been well-studied in environmental chambers and very little is known about its potential to form secondary organic aerosol (SOA). The lack of chamber-derived SOA data for camphene may lead to significant uncertainties in predictions of SOA from oxidation of monoterpenes using existing parameterizations when camphene is a significant contributor to total monoterpenes. Therefore, to advance the understanding of camphene oxidation and SOA formation and to improve representation of camphene in air quality models, a series of experiments was performed in the University of California Riverside environmental chamber to explore camphene SOA mass yields and properties across a range of chemical conditions at atmospherically relevant OH concentrations. The experimental results were compared with modeling simulations obtained using two chemically detailed box models: Statewide Air Pollution Research Center (SAPRC) and Generator for Explicit Chemistry and Kinetics of Organics in the Atmosphere (GECKO-A). SOA parameterizations were derived from the chamber data using both the two-product and volatility basis set (VBS) approaches. Experiments performed with added nitrogen oxides (NOx) resulted in higher SOA mass yields (up to 64 %) than experiments performed without added NOx (up to 28 %). In addition, camphene SOA mass yields increased with SOA mass (Mo) at lower mass loadings, but a threshold was reached at higher mass loadings in which the SOA mass yields no longer increased with Mo. SAPRC modeling of the chamber studies suggested that the higher SOA mass yields at higher initial NOx levels were primarily due to higher production of peroxy radicals (RO2) and the generation of highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) formed through unimolecular RO2 reactions. SAPRC predicted that in the presence of NOx, camphene RO2 reacts with NO and the resultant RO2 undergoes hydrogen (H)-shift isomerization reactions; as has been documented previously, such reactions rapidly add oxygen and lead to products with very low volatility (i.e., HOMs). The end products formed in the presence of NOx have significantly lower volatilities, and higher O : C ratios, than those formed by initial camphene RO2 reacting with hydroperoxyl radicals (HO2) or other RO2. Further analysis reveals the existence of an extreme NOx regime, wherein the SOA mass yield can be suppressed again due to high NO / HO2 ratios. Moreover, particle densities were found to decrease from 1.47 to 1.30 g cm−3 as [HC]0 / [NOx]0 increased and O : C decreased. The observed differences in SOA mass yields were largely explained by the gas-phase RO2 chemistry and the competition between RO2+ HO2, RO2+ NO, RO2+ RO2, and RO2 autoxidation reactions.

Long-chain alkanes in the atmosphere: A review

As a representative species of intermediate volatile organic compounds (IVOCs), long-chain alkanes are considered to be important precursors of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in the atmosphere. This work reviews the previous studies on long-chain alkanes in the atmosphere: (1) the detection methods and filed observations of long-chain alkanes in both gas and particle phases are summarized briefly; (2) the laboratory studies of long chain alkanes are reviewed, the kinetic data, reaction mechanism, SOA yields, and physicochemical properties of SOA are included in detail; (3) the research progress related to model simulations of long-chain alkanes are also discussed. In addition, based on available research results, several perspective contents are proposed that can be used as a guideline for future research plans.

Secondary organic aerosol formation from monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: insights from laboratory studies.

Monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) are key anthropogenic pollutants and often dominate the volatile organic compound emissions and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation especially in the urban atmosphere. To evaluate the environmental impacts of SOA formed from the oxidation of MAHs (aromatic SOA), it is of great importance to elucidate their chemical composition, formation mechanism, and physicochemical properties under various atmospheric conditions. Here we seek to compile a common framework for the current studies on aromatic SOA formation and summarize the knowledge on what has been primarily learned from laboratory studies. This review begins with a brief summary of MAHs' emission characteristics, followed by an overview of atmospheric degradation mechanisms for MAHs as well as gas- and particle-phase reactions involving aromatic SOA formation. SOA formation processes highlighted in this review are complex and depend highly on environmental conditions, posing a substantial challenge for theoretical description of aromatic SOA formation. Therefore, the following issues are further discussed in detail: the response of gas-phase chemistry and aromatic SOA mass yield as well as composition to NOx levels, particle-phase reactions and molecular characterization of aromatic SOA in the presence of acidic sulfate, and physicochemical processes of SOA formation involving gas- or particle-phase water. Building on this current understanding, available experimental studies on the effects of environmental conditions were explored. A brief description of the atmospheric importance of aromatic SOA including their optical properties and health influences is also presented. Finally, we highlight the current challenges in laboratory studies and outline directions for future aromatic SOA research.
