Using a Logic Model to Focus Health Services on Population Health Goals

Abstract: This article describes an application of program logic models to help regional health authorities focus attention and efforts on health outcome goals in British Columbia. The article emphasizes the value of graphic modeling techniques such as logic models in identifying the presumed contribution to regional health status of health services and other health determinants. It argues that logic models facilitate overall governance of health care services by creating performance-monitoring frameworks for both short-term and long-term outcome objectives.

Tackling evaluation: applying a programme logic model to community rehabilitation for adults with brain injury.

Programme evaluation has become an important component of many rehabilitation initiatives in both institutional and community environments. Of key importance is a need for information on developing an evaluation framework to determine and address programme processes and outcomes. This paper presents a programme logic model used to guide the evaluation of a community rehabilitation programme for adults with brain injury. Programme logic models are visual models that provide a framework to organize and integrate information about programme inputs, processes and outcomes. The model is also used in this programme to incorporate the client-centred values of the programme. It was developed through the consensus of the entire team, and was used to plan implementation and outcome evaluations. A similar programme logic model will be useful to occupational therapists and other health care professionals planning programme evaluations of their services.

Application of Program Logic Model to Agricultural Technology Transfer Programs

Abstract: Program logic models have provided a method of schematically presenting program objectives and the underlying cause-effect relationships between activities and outcomes. This article presents a model that explicitly recognizes the ultimate societal-level benefits, and also accommodates identification of outputs, performance indicators, and targets for all levels of objectives. The model is illustrated with a hypothetical agricultural technology transfer program, and some anecdotal observations are presented from the author's work with public-sector program managers and staff.

A Program Logic Model Approach to Conceptualizing Social Service Programs

Abstract: The issue of accountability in the social work has resulted in the convergence of research and practice principles at program and case-levels of practice. Program logic models have surfaced in social work practice arenas in efforts to develop systematic conceptualizations of program services. However, most program logic models have emphasized program-level, or administrative, utility. More effort is needed to explore the benefits of systematic service conceptualization for front-line practitioners. A program logic model approach to service conceptualization that has case-level utility is presented. A case example is used to demonstrate the application of a program logic model for direct practice.

Program Logic Models: Expanding Their Role and Structure for Program Planning and Evaluation

Abstract: Schematic representations of a program, sometimes referred to as program logic models, have been used for a number of years as a means of clarifying the purposes of the program and casual assumptions on which it is based. This paper discusses some of the benefits of expanding the structure of these logic models by clearly separating implementation and outcome objectives within the objectives hierarchy of the program. Benefits of constructing these logic models for program planning and other purposes are also discussed.
