<p>In response to the actual needs of Indonesian students in learning Chinese,Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Harapan Bersama in Pontianak and the College of Chinese Language and Culture of Jinan University have cooperated to open an efficient teaching model of "listening, speaking + reading and writing", in order to quickly improve students' Chinese use ability in a short period of time. This study intends to compare the efficient model with the traditional Indonesian undergraduate teaching model from the aspects of curriculum setting, teaching content, teaching methods and teaching strategies, so as to better meet the needs of different learners. In terms of curriculum setting, the efficient mode adopts the concept of "small steps and fast walking", and the course type is streamlined into two categories: "listening and speaking" and "reading and writing". In terms of teaching content, the study aims to analyze the differences in the content learned by comparing the number of new words taught in one semester and the difficulty level of the two modes. In terms of teaching methods and strategies, the teaching model of "listening, speaking + reading and writing" proposes teaching strategies including "language 'use' for middle school", 'increasing input' and 'running in small steps'". On the basis of teaching practice, this paper evaluates the practical effect of the effective teaching mode of "listening, speaking + reading and writing" for Indonesian students from the aspects of Chinese proficiency test scores, daily homework and activity performance, and then reflects on and improves the teaching practice.</p>

EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF LINGUISTICALLY INFORMED FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS ON EFL PROFICIENCY AMONG GREEK LEARNERS: A PILOT STUDY ACROSS PRIMARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ESTABLISHMENTS

This pilot study explores the impact of linguistically informed formative assessments on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) proficiency among Greek learners, focusing on primary and secondary education establishments. Leveraging five years of research data collected between 2017 and 2022 from over 360 students across urban and rural regions in Greece, this study examines how integrating linguistic theory into formative assessments can enhance students' morphological and syntactical proficiency. Using a mixed-methods approach, both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered through standardized language proficiency tests, linguistically informed assessments, and semi-structured interviews with students and educators. The findings indicate that students exposed to these linguistically informed assessments demonstrate significant improvements in EFL proficiency, particularly in verb conjugation and sentence structure, with enhanced long-term retention and application in both written and spoken English. These results underscore the potential for linguistically informed formative assessments to be a powerful tool in EFL pedagogy, with implications for curriculum design and instructional practices in Greek educational settings. GROSS ALPHA/BETA ACTIVITY DETERMINATIONIN DRINKING WATER PROFICIENCY TESTS

Water intended for drinking purposes has to be analyzed first for gross alpha/beta activity according to national and international standards and recommendations. According to Albanian legislation, Article 6, the gross alpha/beta radioactivity concentration in water, should be below the level of 0.1 Bq/L and 1 Bq/L respectively for human consumption. Our laboratory participated in an interlaboratory comparison organized by IAEA Terrestrial Environmental Laboratory under suggestion of ALMERA members. Proficiency Test among environmental radioactivity monitoring laboratories for the determination of gross alpha/beta activity concentration in drinking water and contaminated surfaces (2018, 2020). Independent standard methods were used for the reference value determination. Each sample was pretreated on site with nitric acid until reaching a pH level below 2. By creating relatively non-polar surfaces, this procedure avoids a loss of radionuclide fractions due to absorption into the walls of the containers.The Gross alpha/beta activity measurements were done using gas-flow proportional counter (GPC) method. The total dissolved solids should not exceed a surface density of 5 mg/cm2 for gross alpha determination and 10 mg/cm2 for gross beta determination The performance of participating laboratories was evaluated with respect to the reference values using relative deviations. The results presented from our laboratory in both inter comparisons (IAEA-TEL-2018-03) and (IAEA-TEL-2020-03) were all acceptable. The laboratory for the measurement of gross alpha/beta radioactivity and our Institute as a part of Tirana University is in the process of accreditation, so far the participation in the inter comparisons exercise is very important.

Multi-Class Analysis of 57 Drugs Quantitatively in Blood and Qualitatively in Urine by LC-MS/MS to Complement Comprehensive DFC, DUID and Postmortem Testing.

A streamlined LC-MS/MS method utilizing protein precipitation and filtration extraction was developed to consolidate analyses for drug-facilitated crime (DFC), postmortem investigations, and driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) testing. Fifty-seven target drug and metabolite analytes eluted in under 6-minutes and compromised of GHB precursors (1), hallucinogens (3), muscle relaxants (3), anticonvulsants (7), antidepressants (20), antihistamines (5), antipsychotics (11), antihypertensives and alpha-adrenergics (3), analgesics and anesthetics (3), and miscellaneous (1) in blood (quantitatively) and urine (qualitatively). Limits of detection were set to meet the more challenging sensitivity requirements for DFC, and are therefore also suitable for postmortem investigations, and other forensic casework, including DUID. Comprehensive ASB/ANSI validation was performed, and applicability studies examined 72 proficiency test blood and urine samples, along with 9,206 unique blood and urines samples from 5,192 authentic forensic cases that resulted in 11,961 positive analytes in samples. By expanding the analytical reach across multiple drug classes through a unified approach and screening a wider number of drugs, the technique can identify substances that might have previously evaded detection, thereby enhancing laboratory efficiency by minimizing the need for multiple tests. When combined with a recently developed in-house method, this integrated testing strategy meets the testing requirements outlined in ASB/ANSI standards and recommendations for DFC, postmortem, and Tier 1 DUID analyses.

International intercomparison and quality assessment of passive and active 222Rn measuring devices in the Asia-Pacific region

Intercomparison exercise is an integral part of the quality assurance programmes in 222Rn measurements using active and passive devices. Ensuring the accuracy of data generated through measurements necessitates periodic performance checks. To achieve harmonization of methods, quantify biases and errors in measurements, and identify the reasons for discrepancies, there is a pressing need for periodic intercomparison exercises. To address this need of numerous laboratories, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, a calibration facility for 222Rn measuring devices has been established at the Centre for Advanced Research in Environmental Radioactivity (CARER), Mangalore University, India. An international intercomparison exercise for the 222Rn measuring devices was conducted at this facility in the year 2022 with the participation of 10 laboratories from six countries. A total of 354 devices (comprising of both active and passive detectors) were subjected to intercomparison measurements by exposing them to three concentration levels: (5.97 ± 0.29) × 103 Bq m−3, (0.70 ± 0.09) × 103 Bq m−3 and (2.02 ± 0.20) × 103 Bq m−3 in separate experiments and the exposure durations were 7 days, 15 days, and 10 days respectively. The performance of each laboratory was evaluated following the criterion adopted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in its worldwide proficiency test programmes. This exercise brought out the fact that some of the laboratories need to improve their measurement practices to produce reliable data.

Vestibular Function and Postural Control in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Background: Postural control deficits have been documented in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet vestibular system contributions to postural control have not been widely considered. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between functional balance, postural sway, and vestibular function in children with ASD. Methods: Ten children with a confirmed diagnosis of ASD according to DSM-V guidelines along with ten children with no known neurodevelopmental or motor delays participated in the study. Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency and the Paediatric Balance Scale measured functional balance ability, and postural sway was measured using static posturography with modified sensory inputs. Peripheral vestibular function was measured using cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and video head impulse testing. Correlations between measures were performed. Results: When visual cues were removed, children with ASD demonstrated larger path velocities indicative of reduced postural control, and different patterns of postural sway. Functional balance was correlated with path velocities for conditions where sensory information was modified. No differences in peripheral vestibular function were noted between groups, and functional balance was not correlated with vestibular function. Conclusions: Findings suggest that while peripheral vestibular function is similar between groups, postural control differences in children with ASD remain, particularly for conditions where sensory information is modified. Furthermore, demonstrated patterns of postural sway suggest sensory system integration is less developed in children with ASD. These findings highlight the importance of utilising a range of clinical tools to quantify balance ability and consideration of postural control measures to inform intervention.

Harmonisation of the HLA tests for the diagnosis of coeliac disease: experiences from the Czech external proficiency testing program.

Coeliac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder caused by the ingestion of gluten-containing grains. One of the prerequisites for the development of the disease is the presence of specific combinations of HLA alleles at the DQA1 and DQB1 loci. The HLA test is a supportive diagnostic test. In the Czech Republic, approximately 3,500 HLA tests for CD diagnosis are performed annually in almost three dozen laboratories. The HLA Department of the Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion in Prague has been offering the EPT "Detection of HLA Alleles Associated with Diseases" for more than 10years. The results are evaluated in terms of the correct determination of predisposing alleles/allelic groups and clinical interpretation. Every year, we notice some problems with the detection of CD-associated alleles and the interpretation of results. Annual workshops are part of this EPT, and they also include recommendations for the interpretation of results. This interpretation is evolving based on the current knowledge in the field. The current recommendation for interpretation was adopted in 2023, dividing HLA-DQA1/DQB1 genotypes into three categories: 1) detected HLA genotype is associated with predisposition to coeliac disease; 2) coeliac disease could not be excluded based on the detected HLA genotype; 3) coeliac disease could be excluded with high probability based on the detected HLA genotype. The quality of examination is increasing but still needs improvement. Correct results and accurate interpretation can inform clinicians' decisions about the diagnosis of coeliac disease in appropriate patients.

Challenges and improvements in HER2 scoring and histologic evaluation: insights from a national proficiency testing scheme for breast cancer diagnosis in China

BackgroundIn 2022, our team launched the pioneering national proficiency testing (PT) scheme for the pathological diagnosis of breast cancer, rapidly establishing its credibility throughout China. Aiming to continuously monitor and improve the proficiency of Chinese pathologists in breast pathology, the second round of the PT scheme was initiated in 2023, which will expand the number of participating institutions, and will conduct a nationwide investigation into the interpretation of HER2 0, 1+, and 2+/FISH- categories in China.MethodsThe methodology employed in the current round of PT scheme closely mirrors that of the preceding cycle in 2022, which is designed and implemented according to the “Conformity assessment—General requirements for proficiency testing”(GB/T27043—2012/ISO/IEC 17043:2010). More importantly, we utilized a statistics-based method to generate assigned values to enhance their robustness and credibility.ResultsThe final PT results, published on the website of the National Quality Control Center for Cancer (http://117.133.40.88:3927), showed that all participants passed the testing. However, a few institutions demonstrated systemic biases in scoring HER2 0, 1+, and 2+/FISH- with accuracy levels below 59%, considered unsatisfactory. Especially, the concordance rate for HER2 0 cases was only 78.1%, indicating challenges in distinguishing HER2 0 from low HER2 expression. Meanwhile, areas for histologic type and grade interpretation improvement were also noted.ConclusionsOur PT scheme demonstrated high proficiency in diagnosing breast cancer in China. But it also identified systemic biases in scoring HER2 0, 1+, and 2+/FISH- at some institutions. More importantly, our study highlighted challenges in the evaluation at the extreme lower end of the HER2 staining spectrum, a crucial area for further research. Meanwhile, it also revealed the need for improvements in interpreting histologic types and grades. These findings strengthened the importance of robust quality assurance mechanisms, like the nationwide PT scheme conducted in this study, to maintain high diagnostic standards and identify areas requiring further training and enhancement.

Determination of Some Element’s Migrants in Aqueous Simulant from Plastic Food Contact Products by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer

Various chemicals present at different stages in the food supply chain can lead to the leaching of heavy metals. These metals can accumulate in the human body through the consumption of contaminated food. Consequently, it is necessary to validate an analytical technique for the quantification chemical that could contaminate food. This study presents a rapid, straightforward, and efficient analytical method for the direct quantification of some potentially toxic elements in aqueous simulants from plastic food contact products using an inductively coupled mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The method’s validation encompassed the study of the estimated detection limits, practical quantification limits, linearity, accuracy, and measurement uncertainty of aluminium (Al), antimony (Sb), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) under optimized ICP-MS conditions. The estimated detection limits ranged from 7.5 × 10−4 to 0.074 mg/kg, while practical quantification limits spanned from 0.02 to 0.8 mg/kg. The average recoveries ± standard deviations at different spiking levels were varied between 85.7 ± 1.51 and 115.6 ± 0.88% with coefficients of variation between 0.42 and 5.85%. The method trueness was verified by using references materials (test material in aqueous acetic acid) purchased from Food Chemistry Proficiency Testing and Analysis (FAPAS) yielding satisfactory results within acceptable recovery and Z-score values. The method precision, in terms of relative standard deviation (RSD), was being below 4.22%. The method uncertainty expressed as expanded uncertainty of all validated elements was found to be ≤ 21.9%. Validated method was employed to determine specific elements in aqueous simulants of thirty commercial plastic food packaging samples, representing three distinct types of plastic polymers. The results showed that the mean concentrations, in mg/kg, were as follows: 2.04 (Al), 0.02 (As), 0.02 (Cd), 0.02 (Co), 0.06 (Cr), 0.41 (Cu), 1.55 (Fe), 0.09 (Mn), 0.15 (Ni), 0.07 (Pb), 0.05 (Sb), and 0.81 (Zn). Furthermore, 30% of analyzed samples exceeding the maximum permissible limits of Al for plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

235 Diagnostic Qualities of the Short Form of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency for Low Motor Competence

Abstract Purpose The Bruninks Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, 2nd Edition (BOT 2) diagnostic tool with 53 test tasks is used for objective assessment of motor proficiency with regard to the diagnosis of motor deficits in motor control. The normative criteria are initially validated on the US population ages 4 - 21. An adaptation for the European setting exists for German-speaking countries ages 4 - 14. There are short versions of the BOT 2 with self-selected items for screening purposes. The aim of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic quality of a German short version of BOT 2 for low motor competence and for the risk of developmental coordination disorder. Methods The motor competence level in n = 637 Czech children aged 6.0-11.0 years (46.6% girls) was evaluated using Total motor composite and subcategories of fine and gross motor skills: Fine manual control, Manual coordination, Body coordination and Strength and agility. We used the following variables to describe the diagnostic validity: Sensitivity, Specificity, Accuracy, Positive and Negative Predictive Values, the Receiver Operating Characteristic, and the Area Under the Curve. Results The short version of the BOT 2 shows a sensitivity for low motor competence of 77%, specificity of 86% and validity of 83%. For the risk of developmental coordination disorder, sensitivity is 77%, specificity is 94%, and validity is 93%. However, there is a lower positive predictive value of 49%. Conclusions The German short version of BOT 2 is an alternative test to the BOT 2 complete form, which is a suitable diagnostic tool for assessing low motor competence, including the diagnosis of risk for DCD. Overall, the BOT 2 short form provides a lower Total motor composite score than the BOT 2 complete form and places significantly more children in the well-below-average category. Print Rich Classroom: An Exposure to Learn English Language Reading Proficiency

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of print rich classroom on English language reading proficiency of fourth grade. The study utilized a randomized pretest-posttest control group design, drawn from true experimental research methods, was employed. A sample of forty fourth-grade students was randomly selected from a private school in Aroop, Gujranwala. Forty students were chosen and divided into two groups: twenty were randomly assigned to the control group and twenty to the experimental group. The control group was taught using traditional teaching methods, while the experimental group received instruction through a print-rich method. Lesson plans incorporating the print-rich method were specifically designed by the researcher for the experimental group. The control group continued with the traditional teaching method for one month. An English Language Reading Proficiency (ELRP) test was developed by the researcher to assess reading skills. The test's validity was confirmed using quantitative methods and expert opinion. Data were collected from both groups, with pre-tests and post-tests administered. The results showed that students taught using the print-rich method confirmed greater improvement in reading proficiency compared to those taught using traditional methods. The study's review clearly indicated, in light of other researchers' earlier research investigations, that this study is beneficial for English language learners that print rich classroom offers a variety of chances for students to advance their English language reading abilities both within and outside of the classroom.

Impact of Bilingual Education on Students Linguistic Proficiency and Cognitive Development at University Level

This study investigates the impact of bilingual education on university students' linguistic proficiency and cognitive development. The research aims to explore the relationship between bilingual education and students' linguistic abilities while assessing its influence on cognitive functions such as memory, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The research hypothesizes that students enrolled in bilingual education programs were demonstrate higher linguistic proficiency and enhanced cognitive development compared to those in monolingual programs. The population consists of university students enrolled in bilingual education programs across various disciplines, with a sample of 200 students selected through stratified random sampling. The study employs a cross-sectional design, utilizing a quantitative research approach. Data collection is conducted through standardized language proficiency tests and cognitive assessment tools, supplemented by structured questionnaires to gather demographic and educational background information. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression techniques to identify significant relationships and impacts. The findings of this study are expected to contribute valuable insights into the effectiveness of bilingual education at the university level, offering implications for curriculum development and educational policy in multilingual contexts.

MAIN STAGES OF THE LANGUAGE TEST DEVELOPMENT PROCESS AND VALIDATION ANALYSIS METHODS: THE CASE OF GAZI TÖMER

Testing is the most widely used assessment tool in measuring the development process of students' languagecompetence. Therefore, the existence of valid and reliable language tests appropriate to student achievements in education is of great importance. Research on language test development in foreign language teaching in Kazakhstan is insufficient. The aim ofthis study is to practically demonstrate the basic stages of the test development process and how to conduct content validity analysis with the example of the proficiency test of foreign language (Turkish) prepared by Gazi TÖMER. The research method was based on a quantitative research design. The sample of the research for validation was consisted of 7 experts with experience in Gazi TÖMER. For reliability, there were a total of 66 students studying at Abai KazNPU. The first part of the study was examinedfor the content validity of the relevant test. For this purpose, based on the criteria determined by Webb for the evaluation of learning outcomes, the opinions received from field experts were evaluated using the Lawshe technique. The CVR value of the 45-question test was .96, and the CVI was “significant”. The second part of the study was about reliability. For this purpose, the difficulty level of each item was examined based on the data obtained from the pilot application of the test. Data were analyzedusing Excel and SPSS programs. Additionally, the KR-20 value was calculated and found to be .80, and the test was considered reliable. It is believed that the steps and results included in the study will guide the process of creating valid and reliable tests in various fields.

EVALUASI PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA ARAB KELAS 7 DI MARHALAH SALAFIYAH WUSTHO PONDOK PESANTREN ISLAMIC CENTRE BIN BAZ PUTRI YOGYAKARTA

Arabic is a mandatory language that cannot be separated from Islamic boarding schools, which is like two sides of a coin because it is the language of the Islamic religion. It will be easier for students to understand the Qur'an or the books they are studying if they master Arabic. Good learning of Arabic must be accompanied by evaluation so that it is clear what things support and hinder it. Evaluation includes four types of proficiency and skill tests (maharah), namely listening (istima'), speaking (kalam), reading (Qiro'ah), and writing (Kitabah). The research aims to determine the evaluation of Arabic language learning at the Islamic Center Bin Baz Islamic Boarding School (ICBB) Putri Yogyakarta, especially grade 7 Salafiyah Wustho. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach and aims to find out how language is practiced at the Bin Baz Putri Islamic Center Islamic Boarding School. The results of the study showed different levels of proficiency in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), namely Kitabah proficiency, which showed the highest achievement of 90%, Qiro'ah proficiency (85%), Istima' proficiency (85%), and Kalam proficiency (80%).

Intraoperative fluoroscopy skills in distal radius fracture surgery: valid and reliable assessment on a novel immersive virtual reality simulator.

Orthopedic trainees must be able to perform intraoperative fluoroscopy imaging to assess the surgical result after volar locking plate surgeries of distal radius fractures. Guided by Messick's contemporary validity framework, the aim of our study was to gather evidence of validity for a test of proficiency for intraoperative imaging of a distal radius fracture using a novel immersive virtual reality simulator. 11 novices and 9 experienced surgeons employed at orthopedic departments completed 2 individual simulator sessions. At each session the participants performed 3 repetitions of an intraoperative fluoroscopic control of a distal radius fracture, consisting of 5 different fluoroscopic views. Several performance metrics were automatically recorded by the simulator and compared between the 2 groups. Simulator metrics for 3 of the 5 fluoroscopic views could discriminate between novices and experienced surgeons. An estimated composite score based on these 3 views showed good test-retest reliability, ICC = 0.82 (confidence interval 0.65-0.92; P < 0.001). A discriminatory standard was set at a composite score of 6.15 points resulting in 1 false positive (i.e., novice scoring better than the standard), and 1 false negative (i.e., experienced surgeon scoring worse than the standard). This study provided validity evidence from all 5 sources of Messick's contemporary validity framework (content, response process, internal structure, relationship with other variables, and consequences) for a simulation-based test of proficiency in intraoperative fluoroscopic control of a distal radius fracture fixated by a volar locking plate.

Exploring the Grammatical Complexity of International Teaching Assistants: A Comparative Corpus Study

AbstractThe purpose of this study is to analyze the grammatical complexity features of international teaching assistants' (ITAs) mock‐teaching presentations and to compare the distributions of these features to those found in the Oral English Proficiency Test (a local ITA assessment), university classroom teaching, conversation, and academic writing. The data consisted of 186 prospective ITAs' mock‐teaching presentations collected from two ITA training courses at a large U.S. university: one higher‐level course and one lower‐level course. All presentations were transcribed, proofread, and built into a corpus consisting of 247,043 words. Based on the previous corpus studies, a total of 22 grammatical complexity features were selected for the analysis. Overall, the discourse of ITA mock‐teaching involved a substantial number of both the grammatical complexity features commonly found in spoken conversation (e.g., finite adverbial clauses and modals) and those commonly used in academic writing (e.g., noun premodifiers and prepositional phrases). The frequency distributions of the features differed in complex ways between ITA mock‐teaching and the other registers, as well as between the higher‐level and lower‐level ITAs. Pedagogical implications for ITA training and assessment, and future research directions are discussed at the end.

A New Design for Reference Values Assignment in Proficiency Testing for Fat and Crude Protein in Raw Milk for a Limited Number of Participants.

Proficiency testing (PT) allows food laboratories to endorse their competency to provide food safety guarantees to producers and consumers. One of the recommended methods for assigning reference values in PT with a small number of participants consists in considering the results that a laboratory obtains by means of a calibration test based on certified reference material (CRM). The present study delves into the results from eight PT rounds on the determination of fat and crude protein from raw milk, with modifications in the number of samples and the analysis sessions from that required by the ISO 13528:2022. The uncertainty criterion of the assigned value established by the ISO 13528:2022 standard was met by 93% of the participating laboratories, which allowed most participants to be evaluated through z-score. The assigned values were generally compatible with the results obtained by the participants. Thus, it can be concluded that the design for the assignment of the reference value is appropriate for PT with a limited number of participants. It is recommended for future PT to limit the uncertainty of the CRM according to their availability and to update the standard deviation of the proficiency assessment for the Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy method (MIR).

Effectiveness of Mobile Applications in Arabic Language Learning for Elementary School Students

This research explores the role of mobile technology in Arabic language education at the elementary school level. With the increasing use of technology in education, this research highlights how mobile applications can be used as effective learning tools. The purpose of this research is to measure the effectiveness of using mobile applications in Arabic language learning for elementary school students. This research employs a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative data was obtained through Arabic language proficiency tests conducted before and after the use of the application, while qualitative data was collected through interviews with students and teachers to gain in-depth insights into their experiences. The results of the study indicate that the use of the mobile application significantly improved students' Arabic language skills, particularly in the areas of vocabulary, reading, and grammar. In addition, this research also reveals that the majority of students and teachers have a positive perception of the use of mobile applications in learning, although there are challenges such as limited access to technology and the need for adequate technical support and training. The recommendations provided include the enhancement of technological infrastructure, support and technical training, collaboration between application developers and educators, as well as parental involvement. This research provides valuable insights into the potential and challenges of using mobile technology in Arabic language education, as well as laying the groundwork for better development and implementation in the future.
