Participation in the digital transformation of healthcare: a review of qualitative studies.

The purpose of this review is to identify how health professionals perceive participation in implementation of new technology in healthcare organizations. A qualitative systematic review based on the PRISMA diagram, was conducted using qualitative synthesis. NVivo software was used for thematic analysis. The searches were performed in PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus. A total of 15 articles were included in the review, four themes describing how participation of health professionals in digital transformation affects the outcomes were identified, and three themes describing the factors that are necessary to promote participation. The underlying latent theme of an unmet desire to participate in the digital transformation was also identified in the analysis. The digital transformation of healthcare is complex and faces many obstacles if not managed correctly. Professional participation in the implementation seems to be essential for success. Focus on increased resources and planning during early stages, as well as teamwork and ethical reflection is important addressing the challenges that professionals face in digital transformation of healthcare.

Unveiling the Context for Implementing Evidence-Based Practice in Spanish Nursing.

This study explores contextual factors affecting evidence-based practice (EBP) adoption among Spanish nurses, examining their interaction with sociodemographic and practice variables to enhance implementation strategies. A national multicenter study employing a cross-sectional online survey design was conducted with an intentional sample of 934 voluntary Spanish practicing nurses. Participants completed the 12-item Barriers/facilitators dimension of the HS-EBP instrument, along with sociodemographic, training and practice information relevant to EBP implementation. Psychometric networks have been utilised as a novel analytical approach. The HS-EBP scores confirm validity and reliability for assessing EBP barriers and facilitators among Spanish nurses. Primary barriers include inadequate EBP discussion spaces, lack of guidance, resistance to change, patient apathy, time constraints and support gaps. Key facilitators are higher academic qualifications, EBP training, professional development participation, educational institution employment and student supervision. Focus is needed on rural nurses and those with heavy clinical duties, facing major EBP barriers. Spanish nurses encounter organisational barriers to EBP implementation, including insufficient incentives and support. Prioritising hands-on training, professional development in teaching and research and robust programs can enhance nurses' ability to advance EBP implementation. The HS-EBP questionnaire is reliable in measuring organisational and contextual factors affecting EBP implementation. Successful implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) in the Spanish healthcare system depends on developing an appropriate organisational culture and securing support from formal leaders. Additionally, fostering an understanding of the importance of patients and their families among Spanish nurses is crucial for promoting EBP adoption.

Art and design workshops at a residential care facility – social care professionals’ experiences of co-creation and participation in designing the physical environment

BackgroundCo-creation and participation among different user groups have been highlighted as pivotal for improving residential care facilities for older persons. However, more knowledge is needed on methods aiming to overcome challenges in constructing inclusive co-creation and participation processes. In particular, there is a need for knowledge concerning how art and design workshops could contribute to co-creation and participation of social care professionals designing the physical environment in residential care facilities. Therefore, this study aimed to examine how art and design workshops can contribute to co-creation and participation in designing the physical environment with residential care facility professionals.MethodsA qualitative method was used to investigate social care professionals’ experiences. Data were collected through semi-structured group interviews and analysed with inspiration from Corbin and Strauss’s analysis method.ResultsThis study concludes that art and design workshops could serve as deliberating and developing practices. First, the art and design workshop as a deliberating practice involves conditions that create a communication arena and space supporting professionals in sharing experiences and voicing different perspectives. Second, the art and design workshop, as a developing practice, supports shared agency through dialogue focusing on designing the physical environment in residential care facilities, using photographs, materials, and fabrics.ConclusionsThis research contributes to the understanding of the relevance of art and design workshops and co-creation between artists and social care professionals in designing the physical environment in residential care facilities. The study can be valuable in identifying important mechanisms that facilitate co-creation and participation among social care professionals, as well as the development of art and design as a tool for improving environments in residential care facilities. The research focuses on how art and design workshops could influence co-creation and participation through art and design from the perspective of social care professionals.

Pre‐Service Teachers’ Technology Integration in Pronunciation Instruction: Professional Identity and Value Beliefs

ABSTRACTTechnology brings new promises to transform second language teaching and learning. Successful technology integration depends on various factors, such as teachers’ professional identity and value beliefs. While scholars have investigated the influential factors for technology integration in language teaching holistically, studies focusing on specific language skills remain limited. With domain‐specific theories and technology applications, pronunciation instruction merits particular attention. In this study, the authors investigated how pre‐service teachers’ professional identity and value beliefs shaped their intended use of technology for pronunciation instruction. Five hundred ninety‐seven pre‐service English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers from China participated in this study. Structural equation modeling analysis identified educator identity orientation, learner‐centered orientation, didactic‐pedagogical orientation, and utility value beliefs of technology as significant predictors of technology integration for pronunciation instruction. In addition, results showed that utility value beliefs mediated the associations between professional identity and participants’ intended use of technology. These findings highlight the crucial role of professional identity and value beliefs in pre‐service teachers’ intended use of technology for language instruction. Findings suggest that teacher educators and teacher training programs may prepare innovative educators by fostering broad identity constructs and enhancing pre‐service teachers’ utility value beliefs of technology.

Clients and carers: Healthcare professionals’ roles in medical device development processes in SMEs

Purpose of the article With the call for patient-centred healthcare, designers and healthcare professionals collaborate increasingly, as both health and design researchers advocate closer engagement between the two. Yet the existing literature is scarce in describing the actual roles taken up by healthcare professionals in these collaborations. Addressing this gap, this article investigates the participation of healthcare professionals in medical device development in SMEs. Materials and methods The research context is Ankara, Turkey, where most design and development activities in medical sector are geared towards export substitution, undertaken with limited resources. The analysis is based on data gathered through semi-structured interviews with 32 professionals, including design professionals, managers, physiotherapists and engineers involved in the design of around 25 medical devices. Results and conclusion This article identifies four main roles that healthcare professionals take in medical device development: business partners, expert users, mediators, and medical professionals. These roles entail diverse responsibilities with various objects of collaboration with designers, making significant contributions to medical design.

Women in Legal Governance: A Comparative Analysis of Female Participation and Advancement in the Legal Profession in Japan and India

The social advancement of women in the legal field is a critical indicator of societal modernisation. Despite the progress made globally in the pursuit of gender equality, there are still substantial disparities, particularly in Asian countries such as India and Japan. In this article, the participation and advancement of female legal professionals in these two nations are analysed, with a particular emphasis on the persistent gender disparity and the influence of cultural and institutional barriers on their professional development. The study employs a comparative analysis using data from the White Paper on Lawyers published by the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, alongside statistical data from Indian state bar councils. Findings indicate a significant disparity in the level of female counsel participation between Japan and India. The proportion of female lawyers in India was less than 11% of the total legal professionals in 2010, a figure that increased marginally to 15% by 2020. The study reveals that in order to address the gender disparity in the legal profession, it is imperative that both Japan and India take proactive measures. This study contributes to the limited corpus of comparative research on female legal professionals in Asian countries. The study provides a nuanced comprehension of the socio-legal dynamics that influence women’s advancement in the legal profession by contrasting the legal landscapes of Japan and India. It urges a joint endeavour to achieve gender equality, underscoring the importance of data-driven policies in the development of an inclusive legal environment.

Influence of PE Teachers’ Professional Learning Community on Continuing Professional Development

The study determined the predictive influence of PE Teachers’ professional learning community participation (PLC) on their continuing professional development engagement. To measure the PLC participation of the respondents, the researcher used the core features of PLC in China: common vision, read-practice-share learning flow, continuous reflection, supportive and sharing leadership, and peer and organizational support. For the assessment of CPD status, the study used the following sub-variables: keeping one’s self abreast, reflection and feedback, experimentation, collaboration for instruction improvement, and collaboration for school development. The assessments showed that the respondents participated in PLC well. Similarly, there is a high CPD engagement among the respondents. More importantly, the study showed that PLC participation significantly predicts CPD engagement.

Advancing inclusive practices in higher education: possibilities and limitations of a social justice professional development course

ABSTRACT Research on widening the participation of historically underrepresented university students tends to focus on student preparation and the structural adjustments needed to attract and retain them. Few studies have examined how to prepare university staff for the diversity of students that comes with such widening participation programmes. This paper contributes to this gap by discussing the impact that a professional development course on practising inclusion in higher education had on academic and professional staff participants’ understanding of equitable and inclusive practices. Using interview data, we found that participants developed a more nuanced and sensitive practice and greater confidence to act for change as they acquired new skills and knowledge associated with social inclusion practices, reflected on their professional identity changes, and gained critical insights into their roles. These findings support the need for this type of professional development to prepare all higher education staff to genuinely support university students from underrepresented groups. They also highlight the need for these professional development offerings to foster greater reflexivity about taken-for-granted assumptions, a deeper understanding of structural power and inequity in higher education, and higher education staff members’ capacity to enact change within these structures.

The effect of interprofessional education on the surgical team members' self-efficacy perception of interprofessional communication in the healthcare system.

The current study aimed to assess the effect of interprofessional education on participants' self-efficacy perception of interprofessional communication at different levels of a healthcare system (relationships in the interpersonal, interprofessional, and administration levels). This is a sequential explanatory mixed-method study. Learners include surgical residents, surgical technology nurses, and anesthesia nurses (n = 130) who participated in the intervention and control groups. The quasi-experimental study was conducted in the first step. The educational strategy was interprofessional education and the main teaching method was case-based learning. The self-efficacy perception of the participants was assessed by a 26-item questionnaire before and 1 month after the intervention. The descriptive tests (mean, SD, percentage), student t-tests, and ANOVA were analyzed. The participants' experiences were explored through semi-structured interviews. Qualitative content was analyzed by Lundman and Graneheim's approach. The results showed that the scores of the learners in the intervention group (4.05 ± 0.31) improved significantly compared to the control group (3.35 ± 0.37) (p = 0.0001). In the present study, the experiences of the participants were categorized into a theme "explicit and implicit confrontations with perceived distrust in the system" which includes two categories "failure to internalize professionalism among team members" and "dominance of a paternalistic culture within the health care system". The results showed the positive impact of interprofessional education interventions on participants' self-efficacy perception of interprofessional communication. The results showed that interprofessional education, with the participation of different professionals and managers at different levels of a healthcare system, improved the participants' perception of self-efficacy regarding interprofessional communication. The results showed the improvement in the participants' communication with team members and managers required to solve the perceived explicit and implicit confrontations in the surgical departments. The implementation of an interprofessional education strategy focused on interprofessional professionalism and collaboration principles in clinical activities, formal and informal education in the surgical department is recommended.

Factors That Influence Access to Medical Assistance in Dying Services: An Integrative Review.

In nearly all jurisdictions where it is permitted, Medical Assistance in Dying is situated in a healthcare system. Currently, limited evidence demonstrates how supply and demand factors influence access to Medical Assistance in Dying. The aim of this study is to synthesise empirical research from jurisdictions where Medical Assistance in Dying is legal to identify how supply and demand factors influence access for eligible adults. An integrative review was conducted. CINAHL Complete, PubMed, ProQuest, PsycINFO and Embase databases were systematically searched for studies published between January 1998 and January 2024. Records were independently assessed against inclusion and exclusion criteria. Additional studies were identified by forward and backward citation searching. All studies were assessed for quality. Findings were analysed deductively using an established conceptual framework, and a secondary narrative synthesis was undertaken. Fifty-eight studies met the inclusion criteria. Most studies (n = 32) reported results related to the supply side, 16 reported on the demand side and 10 reported on both supply and demand dimensions of access. Studies about supply showed that health service policies may obstruct access to Medical Assistance in Dying. For healthcare professionals, the practice entails an additional workload and can create tensions with colleagues. Studies of the demand for Medical Assistance in Dying focused on supporting time-critical decisions, adequate planning and caregiver support. Access to Medical Assistance in Dying requires the participation of health services and healthcare professionals but is hindered by policies that obstruct access and direct financial and indirect emotional labour costs. Innovative and inclusive models to promote high-quality, compassionate care at the end of life and access to Medical Assistance in Dying should be considered. Patients, caregivers and service users were involved in many of the studies included in this review, and their experiences and perspectives contributed to the analysis and synthesis in this review.

Linking New Ways of Working to Employee Performance in Emerging Countries: The Interplay of Technostress, and Meaningful Work

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly reshaped the landscape of work, prompting an urgent inquiry into the new ways of working among scholars and industry practitioners. Amidst this global transformation, Vietnam stands out as a developing nation embracing remote and hybrid working models, yet there is a notable gap in empirical research. This study aims to provide valuable insights into the intricate interplay between new ways of working (NWOW), meaningful work (MW), technostress (TNS), and perceived job performance (JP) in the context of an emerging economy. The study adopted a cross-sectional quantitative approach, utilizing a questionnaire administered through online platforms to a diverse group of professional participants in Vietnam. Convenience sampling was used to gather data. Upon completion of data collection, a total of 309 valid observations were obtained, ensuring an extensive representation of the research phenomenon within its distinct sociocultural context. The analysis was conducted using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), a method well-suited for robust testing of hypotheses. This study shows a positive correlation between NWOW and both TNS and JP. However, the negative relationship between TNS and JP was not statistically supported. On the other hand, the study confirmed a strong positive relationship between NWOW and perceived MW, which also significantly impacted JP. The study provides actionable insights for organizations planning to implement or enhance NWOW, stressing the importance of understanding its complex impacts on MW and TNS. This study significantly contributes to the literature by exploring the intricate relationships among NWOW, TNS, MW, and JP in an emerging economic context, providing a nuanced understanding of these dynamics.

Interprofessional Collaboration and Patient/Family Engagement on Rounds in a Comprehensive Stroke Center: A Mixed-Methods Study

Background and Objectives: Daily rounds provide an opportunity for interprofessional collaboration and patient/family engagement, which are critical to stroke care. As part of a quality improvement program, we conducted a baseline assessment to examine interprofessional collaboration and patient/family engagement during the current rounding process in a 12-bed comprehensive stroke center. Findings from the baseline assessment will be used to inform the development, implementation, and evaluation of a new rounding model. Methods: The baseline assessment used a mixed-methods approach with a convergent parallel design. Although observations of the current rounding process were conducted to quantitatively assess interprofessional collaboration and patient/family engagement on rounds, qualitative interviews were conducted with different stakeholders to identify strengths and weaknesses of the current rounding process, as well as suggestions for facilitating interprofessional collaboration and patient/family engagement. Results: We observed 103 table rounds and 99 bedside rounds and conducted 30 interviews with patients, families, and clinicians. Although the current process was perceived to facilitate interprofessional collaboration, the participation of nurses and other health care professionals on rounds was inconsistent due to competing clinical duties. Good practices for engaging patients and families during bedside rounds were also performed inconsistently. Conclusions: These findings lead to recommendations for revising the rounding process with poststroke patients, utilizing a more interprofessional collaborative approach with focus on patient/family engagement.

Analysis of the Effectiveness of Professional Development Programs, School Committee Participation, and Government Support on Teacher Performance in East Java

This study examines the influence of government support, professional development programs, and school committee participation on teacher performance in East Java, Indonesia. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 230 teachers and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The results reveal that government support has the strongest positive effect on teacher performance, followed by professional development programs and school committee participation. Together, these factors explain 57.7% of the variance in teacher performance. The findings highlight the importance of comprehensive strategies to improve teacher performance, emphasizing the need for strong government policies, continuous professional development, and active community involvement. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers and educational leaders seeking to enhance the quality of education through improved teacher performance.

Registrars as institutions for ensuring the development of the real sector of macroeconomics

Subject. This article discusses the importance of diversified institutions of the financial system, linking the functionalities of the financial and real sectors of macroeconomics. Objectives. The article aims to substantiate the need for such institutions to recognize professional participants of the securities market engaged in maintaining registers of securities holders (registrars), and formulate proposals that contribute to the qualitative disclosure of the potential of registrars in this capacity. Methods. For the study, we used the methods of systems and logical analyses, and the tabulation procedure. Results. The article presents the author-developed proposals aimed at the implementation and development of the potential of registrars as diversified institutions of the financial system, capable of ensuring the development of equity investment as a factor of qualitative and quantitative growth of the real sector of the macro-economy. Conclusions and Relevance. The arguments set forth in the article regarding the need to create an institution of insurance for direct investments of citizens in the creation of new and the development of existing joint-stock companies, the need to provide individuals with the right to register on the websites of investment platforms as persons attracting investments, and other formulated proposals will form the basis for creating norms that contribute to the development of the functionality of registrars, including registrars that are operators of investment platforms, and the realization of their potential as an effective diversified institution of the financial market. The presented proposals may be in demand in the future work of the Bank of Russia, as well as in the work of all interested specialists and scientists aimed at improving the efficiency of the financial sector.

Complex case of multiple sclerosis with multiple demyelinating locations

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder with an unpredictable progression that affects the central nervous system and has significant emotional, social, and professional implications. The therapeutic approach is multifactorial and requires complex management coordinated by a specialized, multidisciplinary team over the long term. Current non-pharmacological treatment strategies under study, which may improve the course of the disease, focus on the gut microbiome and include the administration of probiotics and fecal transplantation. This study presents a case of secondary progressive multiple sclerosis in a young patient, with rapidly progressive evolution despite ongoing background therapy. The study analyzed literature data regarding both medical rehabilitation programs used in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis and other therapeutic strategies that can improve the quality of life. Medical rehabilitation has no proven impact on disease progression but can enhance the quality of life for patients with multiple sclerosis through spasticity management, improved mental health, increased mobility, and muscle strength. These therapeutic strategies can improve involvement in professional activities and participation in social and family life for patients with multiple sclerosis.

When and how patients' self-claims are challenged in psychotherapy

Abstract The article describes the practices through which patients’ self-presentations are challenged in psychotherapy. Based on the analysis of thirty-eight instances from psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, analyzed with methods of conversation analysis, narrative analysis, and coding, this article reports on how therapists challenge patients’ self-conceptualizations in response to patients’ self-presentations. Challenges mostly follow patients’ descriptive, narrative, or evaluative accounts that include a strong claim about their self. Challenges to the self pertain to core issues of the therapeutic projects. They are mostly built in ways that show its sensitivity to probable rejection by the patient. Overwhelmingly, the challenge is accounted for by reference to shared knowledge built in the participants’ shared interactional history. Arguably, psychotherapy is a particular setting where the organization of face-work is modified, as occasional challenging of the co-interactant's self-presentation is part of the institutional task of the professional participant. TEACHERS' ATTITUDES & BARRIERS TO IMPLEMENTING CLIMATE CHANGE EDUCATION IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

This study aimed to investigate the teachers’ attitudes toward incorporating climate change education in secondary schools. It was a descriptive study with quantitative research design. Two hundred secondary school teachers were selected through a stratified sampling technique. For data collection, a five-point self-developed Likert scale was used. Data was analyzed over SPSS 20. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used. It was found that most of the participants agreed about the importance of climate change in education, but they face barriers to implementation. The main challenges found were insufficient resources, training, and a crowded curriculum. The professional development participation particularly anticipated positive attitudes towards the climate change education. There was no significant difference in attitude towards the climate change based upon gender. A significant association was found between the subject taught and attitude towards climate change education. Findings highlight the need for targeted support, including improved resources, training, and curriculum integration, to enhance teachers' capacity and confidence in delivering climate change education.

The natural law and positivist approaches to legal understanding in the context of revealing the category of legal personality of professional participants in capital markets

This article aims to analyze the main philosophical concepts used in understanding the legal category of legal personality and to conduct a descriptive study of the concepts related to this category that prevail in domestic science. The author of the article substantiates the position that the approaches to the theoretical and legal developments of the category of universal legal personality of legal entities should be based on the natural law type of legal understanding. At the same time, the article analyzes domestic authors’ approaches to understanding the legal category of legal personality and compares these approaches with those prevailing in Western countries. Furthermore, the author attempts to justify the expediency of distinguishing exclusive legal personality, given the positivist approach that underlies the construction of the model of the exclusive type of legal personality of professional participants in capital markets. In our opinion, establishing the exclusive legal personality of legal entities is a state-imposed limitation on their universal legal capacity, such as the ability to participate in certain civil-law relations, considering the social importance of the type of activity carried out by these entities. After all, the proper functioning of capital markets is crucial to the financial stability of the country. Capital markets, along with commodity markets, directly influence the formation of exchange rates by attracting foreign investment into the country’s economy. They can also act as a catalyst for economic growth by accumulating financial resources from the population to create capital-intensive productions with high value-added end products. However, achieving such results depends on the balanced state policy in the field of regulating the activities of professional participants in capital markets. To limit the speculative nature of such entities and ensure sustainable economic development, the scope of their legal capacity is narrowed by directly specifying in the law the types of activities they are permitted to engage in.

Evaluation of Microbiota Awareness Among the Healthcare Professionals in Kars Harakani State Hospital

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate microbiota awareness among the healthcare professionals in Kars Harakani State Hospital by their gender, educational status, marital status, and occupational groups. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted between 1-31 December 2023 with the participation of the healthcare professionals (n=329) working at Kars Harakani State Hospital. In the study, a questionnaire form inquiring about sociodemographic characteristics and Microbiota Awareness Scale (MAS) were used. MAS consists of the subfactors of “general information”, “product information”, “chronic disease”, and “probiotic and prebiotic”. Results: Product information, chronic disease, and probiotic and prebiotic subscale scores and MAS total scale scores of females were found to be higher than males. The general information mean score of those with graduate education levels was higher than those with associate degree levels. The product information score of the married participants was determined to be higher than the single participants. The general information mean score of physicians was higher compared to the mean scores of nurses and technicians, while the product information mean score of technicians was lower than the mean scores of physicians, nurses, and midwives. The chronic disease mean score of nurses was higher than that of physicians, and their probiotic and prebiotic mean score and MAS total scale mean score were higher compared to the mean scores of technicians. Conclusion: Microbiota awareness levels among healthcare professionals vary according to their occupational groups.

The influence of socioeconomic status on individual attitudes and experience with clinical trials

BackgroundCharacterizing perceptions of clinical trials among the socioeconomically disadvantaged is necessary for understanding how social determinants of health such as socioeconomic disparities in education and income can affect people’s awareness of and exposure to clinical trialsMethodsA survey was distributed in spring 2023 among a survey taking sample stratified by demographic variables to reflect the U.S. population. The survey assessed the socioeconomic status of the respondent and related covariates, as well as outcome measures including interest in joining a clinical trial, concerns relating to participation, and whether the respondent had previously been asked to participate. Multiple and logistic regression were used to assess the relationship between predictor and outcome variablesResultsHere we show the results of outcome measures regressed on main predictors related to socioeconomic status and related demographic predictors. Education, employment status, insurance coverage, and English proficiency were significant predictors of interest in clinical trial participation. Education and the presence of a healthcare professional or former clinical trial participant in the respondent’s personal network were significant predictors of whether the respondent had previously been asked to participate in a clinical trialConclusionsThe results of the analysis reveal how socioeconomically vulnerable groups, including those from low income and low education groups, are being excluded in clinical research. Analyses also uncovered the impact of clinical trial social influence—the presence of having a family or friend in one’s social network who participated in a clinical trial—on willingness to participate and exposure to clinical trials.
