Quantum state-to-state nonadiabatic dynamics of the charge transfer reaction H+ + NO(X2Π) → H + NO+(X1Σ+): Influence of ro-vibrational excitation of NO

Quantum state-to-state nonadiabatic dynamics of the charge transfer reaction H+ + NO(X2Π, vi = 1, 3, ji = 0, 1) → H + NO+(X1Σ+) has been studied based on the recently constructed diabatic potential energy matrix. It was found that the vibrational excitation of reactant NO inhibits the reactivity, while the rotational excitation of reactant NO has little effect on the reaction probability. These attributes were also observed in the semi-classical trajectory calculations employed in the adiabatic representation. Such an inhibitory effect of the vibrational excitation of reactant NO was owing to lower accessibility of the conical intersection and avoided crossing regions, which are located in the wells with respect to the Π diabat, as evidenced by the analysis of the population of the time-independent wave functions. Calculated vibrational state distributions of the product show that the decrease of the reaction mainly leads to the less formation of low vibrational states (vf < 6), and the product vibrational state distributions are more evenly populated for vi = 1 and 3, suggesting a non-statistical behavior. However, the overall shapes of the product rotational distributions remain unchanged, indicating that the redistribution of energy into the rotation of product NO is sufficient in the charge transfer process between H+ and NO. While the reaction is dominated by the forward and backward scattering in differential cross sections (DCSs), consistent with the complex-forming mechanism, a clear forward bias in the DCSs appears, indicating that the occurrence of the reaction is not sufficiently long to undergo the whole phase space of the interaction configurations.

Isotope Effect and Heavy-Light-Heavy Reactivity Oscillation in the Cl + CHD3/CHT3 Reaction.

Previous experiments and theories have shown the existence of heavy-light-heavy (HLH) reactivity oscillation in the Cl + CH4 reaction and anticipated that similar oscillations should exist in many HLH reactions involving polyatomic reagents. However, the total reaction probabilities for the Cl + CHD3 → HCl + CD3 reaction exhibit only a step-like feature, and the total reaction probabilities for Cl + CHT3 → HCl + CT3 do not show any structure at all. Here, we report seven-dimensional state-to-state quantum dynamics studies for this reaction on the FI-NN PES, and we demonstrate that HLH reactivity oscillations also exist in these two reactions, manifesting as peaks in the reaction probabilities for low product rotational states. These oscillations, however, are obscured in the total reaction probability because of the higher excitation of j ≥ 2 product rotational states. Furthermore, the isotope replacement of nonreactive hydrogen with deuterium and tritium significantly enhances reactivity at collision energies above 0.112 eV, indicating an inverse secondary isotope effect on the probabilities, which is proved to be also caused by HLH mass combination. We also demonstrate that the highly rotational excitation of CHD3 substantially enhances reactivity and the HLH oscillations, similar to HLH triatomic reactions. These observations are completely different from those in the H + CHD3 reaction, which is also a late-barrier reaction. Therefore, the HLH mass combination is very important, which affects not only the reactivity oscillation but also the amplitude and product rotational state distribution and makes the initial rotation excitation play a pivotal role in the reaction.

Detailed quasiclassical dynamics of the F- + SiH3Cl multi-channel reaction.

We report a detailed quasiclassical trajectory study on the F- + SiH3Cl multi-channel reaction using a full-dimensional ab initio analytical potential energy surface. Reaction probabilities, cross sections, initial attack and scattering angle distributions as well as product relative translational, internal, vibrational, and rotational energy distributions are obtained in the collision energy range of 1-40 kcal mol-1 for the following channels: SiH3F + Cl-, SiH2Cl- + HF, SiH2F- + HCl, SiH2FCl + H-, SiH2 + FHCl-, and SiHFCl- + H2. All the channels are translationally cold indicating indirect mechanisms, except proton transfer (SiH2Cl- + HF), which shows mixed direct-indirect character. The angular distributions vary depending on collision energy and inversion/retention for SiH3F + Cl-. In the case of SiH2Cl- + HF front-side/back-side attack backward-forward/forward scattering preference is found at low/high collision energy. SiH2F- + HCl is formed with isotropic scattering and the preferred angle of attack is similar to the SiH3F + Cl- channel. SiH2FCl + H-/SiH2 + FHCl- favors back-side attack and isotropic/backward scattering, whereas SiHFCl- + H2 does not show significant angular preference.

Six-dimensional quantum dynamics of an Eley-Rideal reaction between gaseous and adsorbed hydrogen atoms on Cu(111).

In the form of direct abstraction of a surface adsorbate by a gaseous projectile, the Eley-Rideal (ER) reaction at the gas-surface interface manifests interesting dynamics. Unfortunately, high-dimensional quantum dynamical (QD) studies for ER reactions remain very challenging, which demands a large configuration space and the coordinate transformation of wavefunctions. Here, we report the first six-dimensional (6D) fully coupled quantum scattering method for studying the ER reaction between gas phase H(D) atoms and adsorbed D(H) atoms on a rigid Cu(111) surface. Reaction probabilities and product rovibrational state distributions obtained by this 6D model are found to be quite different from those obtained by reduced-dimensional QD models, demonstrating the high-dimensional nature of the ER reaction. Using two distinct potential energy surfaces (PESs), we further discuss the influence of the PES on the calculated product vibrational and rotational state distributions, in comparison with experimental results. The lateral corrugation and the exothermicity of the PES are found to play a critical role in controlling the energy disposal in the ER reaction.

Photodissociation dynamics of H2S+ near 325 nm

We study the photodissociation dynamics of the hydrogen sulfide cations (H2S+) using the time-sliced velocity map ion imaging (VMI) technique and high-accuracy calculations. High-resolution ion images of the S+(4S) products were measured at four photolysis wavelengths of 325.158, 325.200, 325.243, 325.307 nm, which correspond to the excitation to the A2A1(0,13,0) K=1 state of H2S+. Rotational state-resolved total kinetic energy releases and angular distributions have been derived as a function of the photolysis wavelengths. Notably, photolysis wavelength dependent product rotational state and anisotropy parameter distributions have been clearly observed. Full-dimensional potential energy surface characterization suggests that nonadiabatic coupling between A2A1 and B2B2 states at C2v configurations, as well as relaxation of the symmetry to Cs in the conical intersection region between the two states, plays a key role in the photodissociation process.

Nonadiabatic quantum dynamics of the charge transfer reaction H+ + NO(X2Π) → H + NO+(X1Σ+).

Nonadiabatic quantum dynamics of the charge transfer (CT) reaction H+ + NO(X2Π) → H + NO+(X1Σ+) is investigated on a new diabatic potential energy matrix (PEM) including the 12A' and 22A' states of HNO+/HON+ at the multireference configuration interaction level with Davidson correction using a large basis set. The diabatization of the two coupled states was achieved by the adiabatic-to-diabatic transformation with a mixing angle and the final diabatic PEM was obtained by fitting each matrix element separately using a three-dimensional cubic spline interpolation including more than 22 000 ab initio points. The reaction was found to be dominated by the resonances supported by the double well associated with HNO+ and HON+ species, manifested by the oscillatory structures in the reaction probabilities and product rotational distributions. The product vibrational states were highly excited due to the large exothermicity of the reaction. Consistent with the complex-forming mechanism, the differential cross sections (DCSs) were found to be dominated by the forward and backward scatterings. A clear forward bias in the vibrational state resolved DCSs suggests that the non-statistical behavior of the reaction mainly comes from the low vibrational states of the product. In addition, the rate constants of the reaction in the temperature range from 50 to 500 K were computed for the first time and found to be in fairly good agreement with the available experimental results at 300 K. In particular, compared to other reactions involving neutral species in this system including N, O, and H atoms, such a CT reaction was found to be much more reactive, which has rate constants more than thirty times larger.

Combining Machine Learning and Spectroscopy to Model Reactive Atom + Diatom Collisions.

The prediction of product translational, vibrational, and rotational energy distributions for arbitrary initial conditions for reactive atom + diatom collisions is of considerable practical interest in atmospheric re-entry. Because of the large number of accessible states, determination of the necessary information from explicit (quasi-classical or quantum) dynamics studies is impractical. Here, a machine-learned (ML) model based on translational energy and product vibrational states assigned from a spectroscopic, ro-vibrational coupled energy expression based on the Dunham expansion is developed and tested quantitatively. All models considered in this work reproduce final state distributions determined from quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) simulations with R2 ∼ 0.98. As a further validation, thermal rates determined from the machine-learned models agree with those from explicit QCT simulations and demonstrate that the atomistic details are retained by the machine learning which makes them suitable for applications in more coarse-grained simulations. More generally, it is found that ML is suitable for designing robust and accurate models from mixed computational/experimental data which may also be of interest in other areas of the physical sciences.

Quantum resonances and roaming dynamics in formaldehyde photodissociation.

The unimolecular dissociation of formaldehyde is studied via excitation to the à band at several excitation energies from just below the ground state radical dissociation threshold to 5000 cm-1 above it. CO product rotational distributions, photofragment excitation spectroscopy and state-correlated slice imaging results are combined with quasi-classical trajectory calculations to reveal manifestations of quantum effects in this complex dissociation process involving interactions among radical, molecular, and roaming pathways. Evidence of nodal structure at the tight transition state to molecular products is investigated and correlations between the CO rotational and H2 vibrational distributions are used to suggest the transition state modes that are responsible. A large modulation of the roaming yield previously identified and associated with roaming resonances at the onset of the H + HCO(v1,v2,v3 = 0,0,0) product channel suggests a similar origin for enhanced roaming and a roaming yield that is strongly dependent on parent rotation on the 2641 band just 15 cm-1 above the H + HCO(0,2,1) threshold. Similar resonances are predicted on other bands that share near coincident energies with HCO product vibrational thresholds.

Mode-specific vibrational predissociation dynamics of (HCl)2 via the free and bound HCl stretch overtones.

Velocity-map ion imaging has been used to study the vibrational predissociation dynamics of the HCl dimer following infrared (IR) excitation in the HCl stretch overtone region near 1.77 Å. HCl monomer predissociation products were detected state-selectively using 2 + 1 resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy. The IR action spectrum shows the free HCl stretch (2ν1), the bound HCl stretch (2ν2), and a combination band involving the intermolecular van der Waals stretching mode (2ν2 + ν4). Fragment speed distributions extracted from ion images obtained for a range of HCl(v = 0, 1; J) levels following vibrational excitation on the 2ν1 and 2ν2 bands yield the correlated product pair distributions. All product pairs comprise HCl(v = 1) + HCl(v = 0) and show a strong propensity to minimize the recoil kinetic energy. Highly non-statistical and mode-dependent HCl product rotational distributions are observed, in contrast to that observed following stretch fundamental excitation. Predissociation lifetimes are also mode-dependent: excitation of the free HCl leads to τVP = 13 ± 1 ns, while the bound stretch has a shorter lifetime τVP ≤ 6 ns. The dimer dissociation energy determined from energy conservation (D0 = 397 ± 7 cm-1) is slightly smaller than the previously reported values. The results are discussed in the context of previous observations for (HF)2 and (HCl)2 after excitation of HX stretch fundamentals and models for vibrational predissociation.

Theoretical study of the O(3P) + C2H6 reaction based on a new ab initio-based global potential energy surface.

A new analytical potential energy surface was developed for the first time for the nine-body O(3P) + C2H6 hydrogen abstraction reaction, named PES-2020, which was fitted to explicitly-correlated high-level electronic structure calculations. This surface simulates the topography of the reactive system, from reactants to products, OH(v,j) + C2H5. The adiabatic energy of reaction, ΔHr(0 K) = -2.33 kcal mol-1, reproduces the experimental evidence, and the barrier height, 10.70 kcal mol-1, agrees with the ab initio calculations used as input. In addition, an intermediate complex in the exit channel is observed, which is stabilized with respect to the products of the reaction. Based on PES-2020 a dynamics study was carried out, where quasi-classical trajectory calculations were performed for collision energies in the range of 7.0-60.0 kcal mol-1, which covers high collision energy regions. The reaction cross section increases with collision energy; the largest fraction of available energy is deposited as translational energy (44-66%), and the scattering distribution evolves from backward to forward with collision energy. These findings reproduce previous theoretical calculations using electronic structure calculations of lower levels. However, where these previous studies failed, viz. in rotational and vibrational OH(v,j) distributions, PES-2020 reproduces practically quantitatively the experimental evidence, i.e., cold vibration and rotation, the rotational distribution peaking at j = 1-3 depending on the collision energy. In sum, this behaviour is typical of gas-phase hydrogen abstraction reactions with direct mechanism and high reaction barrier.

Up to a Sign. The Insidious Effects of Energetically Inaccessible Conical Intersections on Unimolecular Reactions.

It is now well established that conical intersections play an essential role in nonadiabatic radiationless decay where their double-cone topography causes them to act as efficient funnels channeling wave packets from the upper to the lower adiabatic state. Until recently, little attention was paid to the effect of conical intersections on dynamics on the lower state, particularly when the total energy involved is significantly below that of the conical intersection seam. This energetic deficiency is routinely used as a sufficient condition to exclude consideration of excited states in ground state dynamics. In this account, we show that, this energy criterion notwithstanding, energy inaccessible conical intersections can and do exert significant influence on lower state dynamics. The origin of this influence is the geometric phase, a signature property of conical intersections, which is the fact that the real-valued electronic wave function changes sign when transported along a loop containing a conical intersection, making the wave function double-valued. This geometric phase is permitted by an often neglected property of the real-valued adiabatic electronic wave function; namely, it is determined only up to an overall sign. Noting that in order to change sign a normalized, continuous function must go through zero, for loops of ever decreasing radii, demonstrating the need for an electronic degeneracy (intersection) to accompany the geometric phase. Since the total wave function must be single-valued a compensating geometry dependent phase needs to be included in the total electronic-nuclear wave function. This Account focuses on how this consequence of the geometric phase can modify nuclear dynamics energetically restricted to the lower state, including tunneling dynamics, in directly measurable ways, including significantly altering tunneling lifetimes, thus confounding the relation between measured lifetimes and barrier heights and widths, and/or completely changing product rotational distributions. Some progress has been made in understanding the origin of this effect. It has emerged that for a system where the lower adiabatic potential energy surface exhibits a topography comprised of two saddle points separated by a high energy conical intersection, the effect of the geometric phase can be quite significant. In this case topologically distinct paths through the two adiabatic saddle points may lead to interference. This was pointed out by Mead and Truhlar almost 50 years ago and denoted the Molecular Aharonov-Bohm effect. Still, the difficulty in anticipating a significant geometric phase effect in tunneling dynamics due to energetically inaccessible conical intersections leads to the attribute insidious that appears in the title of this Account. Since any theory is only as relevant as the prevalence of the systems it describes, we include in this Account examples of real systems where these effects can be observed. The accuracy of the reviewed calculations is high since we use fully quantum mechanical dynamics and construct the geometric phase using an accurate diabatic state fit of high quality ab initio data, energies, energy gradients, and interstate couplings. It remains for future work to establish the prevalence of this phenomenon and its deleterious effects on the conventional wisdom discussed in this work.

A theoretical study on the C + OH reaction dynamics and product energy disposal with vibrationally excited reagent

State-to-state dynamics of the C(3 P) + OH(X2 Π , v = 0– 2, j = 0) → CO (a3 Π ) + H (2 S), reaction on the first (12 A″ ) and second (14 A″ ) excited states is studied by the real wave packet method of Gray and Balint-Kurti [S.K. Gray et al., J. Chem. Phys. 108 , 950 (1998)]. Product state-resolved (both vibrational and rotational) and total reaction probabilities are calculated for the total angular momentum, J = 0. Product vibrational and rotational distributions are also examined at five different collision energies to elucidate the reaction mechanism. Reagent vibrational excitation is found to decrease the reactivity on the 12 A″ state and enhance the same on the 14 A″ state. While the excess reagent vibrational energy releases mainly as product translation on the 12 A″ state, the same releases as product vibration and rotation on the 14 A″ state. The product rotational distribution is relatively cold on the 14 A″ state. Despite same mass combination and same exoergicity, the drastic differences of the dynamics of the reaction on the two excited states are related to the microscopic topology of the underlying reaction path. The late barrier present on the 14 A″ state plays crucial role on the reaction dynamics at the state-to-state level. The results of the present study are compared with the available literature data.

Zero-point energy conservation in classical trajectory simulations: Application to H2CO.

A new approach for preventing zero-point energy (ZPE) violation in quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) simulations is presented and applied to H2CO "roaming" reactions. Zero-point energy may be problematic in roaming reactions because they occur at or near bond dissociation thresholds and these channels may be incorrectly open or closed depending on if, or how, ZPE has been treated. Here we run QCT simulations on a "ZPE-corrected" potential energy surface defined as the sum of the molecular potential energy surface (PES) and the global harmonic ZPE surface. Five different harmonic ZPE estimates are examined with four, on average, giving values within 4 kJ/mol-chemical accuracy-for H2CO. The local harmonic ZPE, at arbitrary molecular configurations, is subsequently defined in terms of "projected" Cartesian coordinates and a global ZPE "surface" is constructed using Shepard interpolation. This, combined with a second-order modified Shepard interpolated PES, V, allows us to construct a proof-of-concept ZPE-corrected PES for H2CO, V eff, at no additional computational cost to the PES itself. Both V and V eff are used to model product state distributions from the H + HCO → H2 + CO abstraction reaction, which are shown to reproduce the literature roaming product state distributions. Our ZPE-corrected PES allows all trajectories to be analysed, whereas, in previous simulations, a significant proportion was discarded because of ZPE violation. We find ZPE has little effect on product rotational distributions, validating previous QCT simulations. Running trajectories on V, however, shifts the product kinetic energy release to higher energy than on V eff and classical simulations of kinetic energy release should therefore be viewed with caution.

Nuclear spin/parity dependent spectroscopy and predissociation dynamics in vOH = 2 ← 0 overtone excited Ne-H2O clusters: Theory and experiment.

Vibrationally state selective overtone spectroscopy and state- and nuclear spin-dependent predissociation dynamics of weakly bound ortho- and para-Ne-H2O complexes (D0(ortho) = 34.66 cm-1 and D0(para) = 31.67 cm-1) are reported, based on near-infrared excitation of van der Waals cluster bands correlating with vOH = 2 ← 0 overtone transitions (|02-〉 and |02+〉) out of the ortho (101) and para (000) internal rotor states of the H2O moiety. Quantum theoretical calculations for nuclear motion on a high level potential energy surface [CCSD(T)/VnZf12 (n = 3, 4)], corrected for basis set superposition error and extrapolated to the complete basis set (CBS) limit, are employed to successfully predict and assign Π-Σ, Σ-Σ, and Σ-Π infrared bands in the spectra, where Σ or Π represent approximate projections of the body-fixed H2O angular momentum along the Ne-H2O internuclear axis. IR-UV pump-probe experimental capabilities permit real-time measurements of the vibrational predissociation dynamics, which indicate facile intramolecular vibrational energy transfer from the H2O vOH = 2 overtone vibrations into the VdWs (van der Waals) dissociation coordinate on the τprediss = 15-25 ns time scale. Whereas all predicted strong transitions in the ortho-Ne-H2O complexes are readily detected and assigned, vibrationally mediated photolysis spectra for the corresponding para-Ne-H2O bands are surprisingly absent despite ab initio predictions of Q-branch intensities with S/N > 20-40. Such behavior signals the presence of highly selective nuclear spin ortho-para predissociation dynamics in the upper state, for which we offer a simple mechanism based on Ne-atom mediated intramolecular vibrational relaxation in the H2O subunit (i.e., |02±〉 → {|01±〉; v2 = 2}), which is confirmed by the ab initio energy level predictions and the nascent OH rotational (N), spin orbit (Π1/2,3/2), and lambda doublet product distributions.

State-resolved dynamics study of the H + HS reaction on the 3A' and 3A″ states with time-dependent quantum wave packet method.

The quantum dynamics calculations of the H + HS (v = 0, j = 0) reaction on the 3A' and 3A″ potential energy surfaces (PESs) are performed using the reactant coordinate based time-dependent wave packet method. State-averaged and state-resolved results for both channels of the title reaction are presented in the 0.02-1.0 eV collision energy range and compared with those carried out with quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) method. Total integral cross sections (ICSs) for both channels are in excellent agreement with previous quantum mechanical (QM)-Coriolis coupling results while poorly agree with the QCT ICSs of the exchange channel, particularly near the threshold energy region. The product rotational distributions show that for the abstraction channel, the agreement between our QM and the QCT results improves with increasing collision energy. For the exchange channel, our calculations predict colder rotational distributions as compared to those obtained by QCT calculations. Although the QM total differential cross sections (DCSs) are in qualitatively good agreement with the QCT results, the two sets of the state-to-state DCSs with several peaks exhibit great divergences. The origin of the divergences are traced by analyzing the QM DCS for the H + HS (v = 0, j = 0) → H2 (v' = 0, j' = 0) + S reaction on the 3A″ PES at Ec = 1.0 eV. It is discovered that several groups of J partial waves are involved in the reaction and the shape of the DCS is greatly altered by quantum interferences between them.

Classical dynamics of H2O vibrational self-relaxation.

The vibrational self-relaxation rate constants of the (001), (100), (020), and (010) states of H2O from 295 to 2500 K are calculated, using ∼1.6 × 10(6) classical trajectories with Gaussian binning for determining product vibrational quantum numbers. The calculations use a new H2O-H2O potential surface obtained by fitting 1.25 × 10(5) ab initio geometry points at the CCSD(T)//cc-pvtz level of theory. The resulting vibrational self-relaxation rate constants are generally within a factor of 2 of the measured data, which are large in magnitude and tend to increase with decreasing temperature. At lower temperatures, the calculations show long-lived (20 ps and longer) H2O-H2O collision complexes which accompany vibrational relaxation. Product rotational and translational energy distributions are investigated, and joint vibrational state and molecule-specific relaxation rate constants are presented.

Accurate state-to-state quantum wave packet calculations of integral cross sections for the title reaction are presented. Calculations are carried out on the best available ground 12A' global adiabatic potential energy surface of Deskevich et. al.[1]. Converged state-to-state wave packet reaction cross sections with the DCl (v=0, j=0-1; v=1, j=0) reagent have been calculated for the collision energy range from threshold up to 0.5 eV. Accurate product vibrational and rotational distributions of cross sections have been calculated at selected collision energies. State-to-state and total initial-state resolved rate constants of the title reaction have been calculated in a temperature range of 100-300 K. The present accurate calculations at v=0, j=0, J=0 show noticeable differences with previous calculations for the F+HCl reaction. Assuming the reaction coordinate in the F-Cl distance and to estimate the zero point energy in the orthogonal coordinate we have calculated the bound states along the reaction path for frozen F-Cl distance to interpret the results.

An accurate potential energy surface for the F + H2 → HF + H reaction by the coupled-cluster method.

A three dimensional potential energy surface for the F + H2 → HF + H reaction has been computed by the spin unrestricted coupled cluster method with singles, doubles, triples, and perturbative quadruples [UCCSDT(2)Q] using the augmented correlation-consistent polarised valence quadruple zeta basis set for the fluorine atom and the correlation-consistent polarised valence quadruple zeta basis set for the hydrogen atom. All the calculations are based on the restricted open-shell Hartree-Fock orbitals, together with the frozen core approximations, and the UCCSD(T)/complete basis set (CBS) correction term was included. The global potential energy surface was calculated by fitting the sampled ab initio points without any scaling factor for the correlation energy part using a neutral network function method. Extensive dynamics calculations have been carried out on the potential energy surface. The reaction rate constants, integral cross sections, product rotational states distribution, and forward and backward scattering as a function of collision energy of the F + HD → HF + D, F + HD → DF + H, and F + H2 reaction, were calculated by the time-independent quantum dynamics scattering theory using the new surface. The satisfactory agreement with the reported experimental observations previously demonstrates the accuracy of the new potential energy surface.

A detailed reactive cross section study of X + Li2 → Li + LiX, with X = H, D, T, and Mu.

In this work we apply quasiclassical trajectory theory to the X + Li2 → Li + LiX reactions, with X standing for H, D, T, and Mu, in order to determine dynamical properties such as state-to-state reactive cross-section, rotational, vibrational, and translational product distributions. By using the literature benchmark potential energy surface, we were able to predict the aforementioned dynamical property in remarkable qualitative agreement with data in the literature for the H + Li2 → Li + LiH channel. Particularly, our results points toward the well known cross section independence with ro-vibrational excitations for high excitation regimes. Since the methodology is known to be well suited for the other species, as we considered the same PES, our results are expected to be similarly accurate for D, T, and Mu. The present work consists on a significant progress in this area of research, since previous theoretical calculations-based on known potential energy surface-deviated from the experimental results.

The D(+) + H2 reaction: differential and integral cross sections at low energy and rate constants at low temperature.

The D(+) + H2 reaction is investigated by means of a time independent quantum mechanical (TIQM) and statistical quantum mechanical (SQM) methods. Differential cross sections and product rotational distributions obtained with these two theoretical approaches for collision energies between 1 meV and 0.1 eV are compared to analyze the dynamics of the process. The agreement observed between the TIQM differential cross sections and the SQM predictions as the energy increases revealed the role played by the complex-forming mechanism. The importance of a good description of the asymptotic regions is also investigated by calculating rate constants for the title reaction at low temperature.
