Benefits and Limitations of Lean Tools in the Building Design Process: A Functional and Comparative Analysis

The design phase is critical in construction projects, as it directly impacts cost, quality, and execution efficiency. However, it suffers from structural deficiencies in communication, coordination, and early problem detection, leading to delays, cost overruns, and inefficiencies. While Lean Construction has been widely applied in execution phases, its adoption in design remains fragmented, lacking a clear framework for identifying and evaluating Lean tools in this context. This study aims to identify, classify, and evaluate Lean tools applicable to the building design phase, emphasizing their functionalities, benefits, and limitations. A systematic literature review and expert validation process led to the identification of 16 Lean tools and 26 design-related functionalities. Among these tools, Building Information Modeling (BIM), Last Planner System (LPS), and Agile Design Management (ADM) were identified as the most impactful, collectively addressing 88% of design functionalities. Expert insights revealed that ADM improves task control and decision-making clarity, LPS reduces uncertainty and enhances workflow reliability, and BIM strengthens coordination and early conflict detection. This study provides a structured perspective on Lean tool integration during design, highlighting their benefits and limitations and offering guidance for their implementation. The findings contribute to improving design efficiency, minimizing waste, and fostering collaboration in construction projects.

Early Motor Repertoire and Developmental Functioning at Later Age of Children Who Were Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Pilot Study

Aims Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may exhibit early motor delay, and long-term motor impairments in addition to social and communicative problems. This pilot study aimed to describe (i) the early motor repertoire using General Movements Assessment (GMA) of infants later diagnosed with ASD, (ii) the developmental outcomes in these children between 24- and 42-months, and (iii) the relationship between GMA and developmental outcomes. Methods Ten children diagnosed with ASD were included. All infants were assessed using Motor Optimality Score for 3- to 5-month-old Infants–Revised score sheet for GMA, and the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (Bayley-III) for developmental functioning aged between 24- and 42-months. Results The median Motor Optimality Score-Revised (MOS-R) was 10 (range: 6–28), considered reduced optimal, and 80% of children had less than optimal MOS-R. 60% of the children had aberrant fidgety movements and abnormal postural patterns, and 80% had abnormal but not cramped-synchronized movement character. The mean composite scores of all subdomains in Bayley-III were below 69 (extremely low) in all children. Conclusions This study highlighted the importance of early motor repertoire and longitudinal developmental assessments in children with ASD. Further research is needed to explore the potential of this assessment as a screening tool.

Artificial Intelligence Enabled Climate Change Communication: The Role of ClimateGPT

Climate change is one of the most important environmental problems humanity faces. To combat climate change, it is necessary first to understand the concept of climate change correctly and to know its negative effects and solution methods. Unfortunately, there is a problem in climate change communication between scientists and the public. Artificial intelligence (AI) can overcome this problem. The use of artificial intelligence in climate-related communication contributes to the increase in the effectiveness of communication. This study aims to explain the basic concepts of climate change to the public and students with the help of AI. For this purpose, ClimateGPT, an AI tool developed by Erasmus AI company, was used. ClimateGPT answered a series of questions about climate change, greenhouse effect and greenhouse gases, climate change effects, mitigation and adaptation measures, and finally climate communication. An expert cross-checked all answers. As a result of the study, ClimateGPT has been shown to produce mostly accurate and clear answers that everyone can understand. The AI-generated information can be used to educate the public about climate change. Therefore, this study contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal number 13: Climate Action.

Understanding Problems in Communication and Cognition Experienced by Uninsured Individuals Following Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries.

Uninsured individuals who experience brain injury and spinal cord injury (SCI) may not have access to health care services following their injury. We describe the demographic characteristics and reported problems in communication and cognition of individuals attending the Georgia Rehabilitation Services Volunteer Partnership (RSVP) Clinic, a free clinic that provides rehabilitative care to uninsured and underinsured individuals who experience these injuries. Descriptive statistics examined at admission include injury type, age, race/ethnicity, highest level of education completed, employment status, and insurance type. Clinic participants are asked if they experience problems with having a conversation, reading, writing/typing, remembering things, paying attention, making decisions/solving problems, and the importance of addressing these areas in clinic. Of the 63 participants, 49% had an acquired brain injury (ABI) and 56% had an SCI. Individuals served in our clinic have a mean age of 38 years old, are primarily male (68%), are Black or African American (75%), and were unemployed at the time of admission (98%). Fifty-seven individuals (ABI = 29, SCI = 30, dual ABI and SCI = 2) responded to questions about difficulties in communication and cognition at clinic intake of which 40 of those individuals identified one or more challenges in these areas. Writing/typing was the most prevalent communication complaint, whereas remembering was the most frequently reported cognitive challenge. One participant completed these questions at clinic discharge, demonstrating improvement in communication and cognition. The Georgia RSVP Clinic provides opportunity to understand uninsured adults who experience a brain injury or SCI. Clinic data provide insight on important patient experiences related to problems with communication and cognition. The clinic offers a unique opportunity to observe the "invisible" population of individuals who experience brain injury and SCI who do not have access to resources in Georgia.

Characteristics, Challenges and Countermeasures of Strengthening International Communication Capacity Building in the New Media Era

In the new media era, international communication presents the characteristics of diversified communication subjects, fragmented communication content, and interactive communication forms. China has problems in international communication, such as a single communication subject, insufficient communication channels, and lack of innovation in communication forms and content. Based on the many characteristics of new media, China should break the traditional thinking, expand the communication subjects, combine “speaking by oneself” with “speaking by others”, and pay attention to the influence of grassroots communication subjects. It is necessary to broaden the communication channels and build an all-media communication pattern that combines central-level media with social media and short video media. In terms of communication forms, AI, VR and other technologies should be used to enable communication effects, and in terms of communication content, Marxism, the “soul” and the excellent traditional Chinese culture, the “roots”, should not be abandoned. Only in this way can we tell the Chinese story well and show a charming image of China.

Nowadays, Internet of Things (IoT) technology has compressed various aspects of day-by-day life, but it has a profound effect on the healthcare sector. Because the IoT role can play a significant part in the aids of IoT-based healthcare applications. Here, many healthcare data packets communicate through the IoT devices such as actuators, sensors, transceivers, etc. Here, vulnerabilities, attacks, and threats overflow for data on the IoT. Hence, addressing IoT-linked security and communication problems needs a robust communication solution. Therefore, this paper aims to develop a novel communication protocol named Whale-based Low-Power and Lossy Network Routing Protocol (RPL) routing protocol. Here, the RPL routing protocol enables IoT network communication with a suitable objective function. The proposed optimization fitness function initially selects the cluster head and chooses the communication path with the help of the RPL routing protocol. Moreover, the developed routing protocol is executed in the MATLAB platform, and simulation results are validated with conventional models. From the comparison, the proposed framework has attained a higher security range and packet delivery ratio.

In Nigeria, intercultural dialogue is inevitable for peaceful co-existence and mutual relationships among the citizens. The reason is that intercultural dialogue involves interaction between people from different cultural backgrounds and ethnic nationalities. To achieve constructive intercultural dialogue, it requires a sense of intercultural competence. Therefore, this study examined the role of intercultural competence in promoting intercultural dialogue, focusing on Nigeria's cultural diversity. The study explored the descriptive research method and drew data from the review of previous studies, while the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) was adopted as the theoretical framework for the study. The rationale behind the choice of this theory is rooted in the fact that intercultural dialogue requires intercultural competence and sensitivity. Through the theoretical framework, the study investigated different stages during intercultural dialogue and Engagement, challenges associated with intercultural dialogue, and the imperative of intercultural competence for intercultural dialogue. Acquiring intercultural competence will enable individuals to overcome some of the challenges associated with intercultural competence. The study discovers that intercultural competence is imperative for preventing communication problems, misunderstanding and conflict, fostering trust, collaboration, inclusion and social harmony, and professional relationships across cultural divides when people engage in intercultural dialogue.

Machine Learning Based on Antennas Modeling for 5G and 6G Communication Systems: A Systematic Review

ABSTRACTArtificial intelligence (AI)‐aided communications have gained significant traction in recent years due to the widespread application of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) machines with algorithms to solve math problems in wireless communications. This study offers an overview of the use of ML models in antenna design and optimization. This incorporates DL on ML frameworks, categories, and structure to get practical and broad insights using ML techniques for high throughput, quick data analysis, and prediction. This article also comprehensively reviews recent research papers on antenna design via ML. This includes an analysis of several ML algorithms that have been applied to produce antenna parameters such as the reflection coefficient (S‐parameters), efficiency and gain values, and radiation patterns of the antennas. However, the current antenna design's structure, variables, and external factors remain complex. In addition, the expense of time and processing resources is inescapable and unacceptable to most designers. ML‐based antennas have been created to increase antenna modeling efficiency and accuracy to solve these challenges. Techniques for modeling data may be used to predict the performance of an antenna for a certain set of antenna factors of design. As a result, this study highlights the most sophisticated applied ML techniques that have been presented to increase antenna modeling efficiency and accuracy. The results demonstrate that AI, ML, and DL may minimize simulation needs, predict antenna behavior, and reduce time with high accuracy.

Shifts of intercultural communicative competence experienced by international students

Intercultural communication is a vital component of modern education, necessitating efforts to enhance students’ Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC). Achieving this requires intentional strategies, such as exposing students to international learning environments. Immersing students in international learning environments—such as through international programs or short-term overseas courses—can foster ICC development. Consequently, identifying shifts in ICC and effective strategies for its development is essential. This study was aimed at exploring the shift in ICC as experienced by international students as well as the intercultural communication problems encountered. This mixed method research was of explanatory-exploratory design with the respondents of Indonesian students taking a course in Singapore and foreign students pursuing a study in Indonesia. Data collection instruments used were questionnaires, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews. Findings of the study reveal that students taking courses in other countries improved their ICC in all four categories in terms of knowledge, attitude, skills, and awareness. Problems encountered included linguistic, social, and cultural problems.

Digital Literacy Education: The Role of Language in Resolving Communication Conflicts on Social Media

This study aims to investigate digital literacy education, which enhances users' technical skills and fosters ethical and effective communication competencies. This study emphasizes the use of language as a mechanism for resolving communication problems on social media. This research employs a qualitative methodology. This study aims to analyze public perceptions of political dynamics, polarization, and voter engagement, as well as the influence of social media on the dissemination of information and opinions concerning the election. Data is gathered via interviews and focus group sessions. We employed a descriptive qualitative data analysis methodology. The study's results suggest that the ramifications for digital literacy education are substantial in the context of the election. Education that fosters a critical comprehension of language in social media, the capacity to identify biased or misleading material, and the proficiency in ethical and effective communication can mitigate communication disputes and enhance the quality of political discourse. Another conclusion indicates that language significantly influences the quality of communication on social media, subsequently impacting the democratic process and voter engagement in elections. Moreover, social media can serve as a crucial medium to enhance voter engagement, provided that the language employed stimulates public interest and comprehension of the electoral process. This paper integrates the methodologies of the philosophy of language and digital communication studies, contributing to the discourse on fostering peaceful interactions in cyberspace and offering good implications for digital literacy education.

Vocabulary and oral expression: Linguistic barriers in young learners in EFL context

Word-for-word the advanced English Language learners' vocabulary skills present a profound hurdle towards self-articulation, socially, academically, or otherwise, and with fluency. These gaps in vocabulary severely cripple effective communication simultaneously resulting in a paradoxical understanding of communication. This study, therefore, seeks to establish the extent to which lack of vocabulary skills affects oral skills and find the factors that constitute the gaps in communicative abilities. This study purposively collected quantitative data from 5th graders in Santa Ana Private Educational Unit and employed semi-structured interviews to collect qualitative data from teachers. Teachers gave some responses that enabled them to understand the communication problems that existed in the classroom. The study aimed to understand how vocabulary problems are proportioned to students not being able to express themselves articulately in desired discussions. Looking from both sides helps in understanding the situation in total. This helped understand the extent to which oral articulation and expression were inhibited due to great gaps in vocabulary.

Family resilience in patients with gynecological malignant tumors after radical hysterectomy: based on the Walsh family resilience framework.

Explore and analyze the family resilience of patients with gynecological malignancies after radical hysterectomy, providing a theoretical basis for the formulation of future intervention measures. Using a phenomenological descriptive qualitative research method, 17 patients who underwent radical surgery for gynecological malignancies were selected for semi-structured interviews. Data analysis and theme extraction were conducted using Colaizzi data analysis method and NVivo V.12. Three themes and eight sub-themes were extracted: family belief system (confront surgical challenges head-on, attribute positive significance to adversity, stay positive), family organization model (timely adjustment of family roles, family cohesion, get support and help from others), and family communication and problem solving skills (communicate to eliminate negative emotions, collaborative problem solving). This study indicates that the family belief system is the solid foundation of family resilience, the family organizational pattern serves as a buffer when the family faces adversity, and positive communication and collaborative problem solving create a positive feedback loop that enhances family resilience. Future interventions could enhance patients' family resilience from the perspective of family strengths.

Evaluating the Effects of Political Polarization on Family Ties in Punjab

The present research attempts to evaluate the effects of political polarization on family ties in Punjab. This study examines how political polarization affects family relationships in Punjab, Pakistan. Intense disagreements about ideology and partisanship are features of electoral polarization, which has serious negative effects on society, including damaged family ties. Using an analytical structure based on intergroup conflict theory, this research investigates how ideological differences affect intergenerational family relationships. The study collects primary information from 400 people who took part in three regions of Punjab—Attock, Sheikhupura, and Multan—using a questionnaire. According to the study, political polarization and weaker family ties are positively correlated, with disputes and strained interactions usually resulting from disputes over politics. Important findings show that political opinions vary significantly between and within generations, which causes communication problems and quiet arguments as coping strategies in families. The study concludes that political polarization is becoming a bigger problem in Punjab and that it hurts family relationships and unity. To reduce conflict and improve family relationships, it is advised that families foster common ideals and reasoned political discourse. This study advances the sociological knowledge of how family dynamics are affected by political polarization in a politically complicated and culturally diverse area.
