Identification of Harbin Ecological Function Degradation Areas Based on Ecological Importance Assessment and Ecological Sensitivity

This study is based on the National Spatial Ecological Protection and Restoration Plan, using logical ecological evaluation indicators to determine the extent of ecological function degradation areas in Harbin City. In the Heilongjiang Province, Harbin faces severe ecological environment degradation, characterized by reduced area, deteriorated water quality, loss of biodiversity, and water resource competition. Identifying degraded ecological regions can effectively address these environmental issues. A multi-level indicator system was constructed to evaluate and identify ecological important and sensitive areas across the city, followed by integrating these results to delineate various levels and types of ecological protection and restoration zones in Harbin. Results indicate that these zones include ecological priority protection areas such as marshes surrounding the Harbin section of the Songhua River, southern aquatic wetlands, and scattered forest conservation areas. Key ecological restoration areas are found in the eastern urban core of Harbin, as well as in Bayan County, Bin County’s northern region, Wuchang City’s northwest region, and Yilan County. General ecological restoration areas are primarily distributed in Songbei District, Shuangcheng District, Mulan County, southeastern Bin County, Shangzhi City, southeastern Wuchang City, and some surrounding counties along the Songhua River. Priority ecological protection areas consist mainly of unused land, cultivated land, and forests, while key and general ecological restoration areas are predominantly composed of cultivated land and forests respectively.

Geographical pattern of the deviation between taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity and its implications for the conservation of Chinese orchids

Orchidaceae stands as one of the “flagship” groups in global biodiversity conservation, attracting significant attention from researchers in China. Previous studies have focused on taxonomic diversity, neglecting the integration of phylogeny and functional aspects. Here, we have leveraged a large dataset of distributions, evolutionary relationships, and functional traits of orchids in China to analyze geographic patterns of species richness (SR), weighted endemism (WE), phylogenetic diversity (PD), phylogenetic endemism (PE), functional diversity (FD), and functional endemism (FE). Furthermore, we analyzed the deviations between PD (or FD) and SR (PDdev, and FDdev), as well as between PE (or FE) and WE (PEdev, and FEdev), taking into account climatic and environmental variables. We also delineated the priority protection and survey areas of orchid plants in China. Our results revealed that the geographic patterns of SR, WE, PD, PE, FD, and FE for orchids generally exhibited similar trends. However, there were notable inconsistencies in the geographical patterns of PDdev, FDdev, PEdev, and FEdev, which might be related to the different environmental responses of these four diversity deviation metrics. We have pinpointed six priority conservation areas for orchids in China, i.e., southeasterrn Xizang, western Yunnan, central Yunan, the Karst area at the border of Guizhou and Guangxi, the border of Guangdong and Guangxi, and Taiwan Island. In addition, we have also identified certain priority survey areas for orchids, encompassing southeastern Xizang and other crucial locales. These findings will guide future conservation and research efforts aimed at safeguarding the rich biodiversity of orchids in China.

Integrating “quality-risk-demand” framework and circuit theory to identify spatial range and priority area of ecological security pattern in a rapidly urbanizing landscape

Regional ecological security pattern (ESP) can provide the basis for regional territorial spatial planning and urban ecological protection. Taking the Wuhan metropolitan area as the study area, a binary logistic regression model was used to quantify the evolutionary driving forces and transformation risk of ecological land. An identification framework of ecological source based on “quality-risk-demand” was constructed to identify ecological source by calculating the ecological land comprehensive value from three aspects of ecological land quality, degradation risk, and human demand. The ecological resistance surface was calculated according to land-use type and nighttime light data, further using circuit theory to identify the spatial range and its key areas of ecological corridors, and to identify the specific spatial range of ESP and their priority area. The results showed ecological sources were 382.4 km2, accounting for 17.3% of the metropolitan area. The area of ecological corridors in the terrestrial ecosystem (TEC) was 14.38 km2, with an average width of 77.8 m, including 4.99 km2 of pinch points and 3.71 km2 of barriers, indicating poor actual connectivity of the TEC. Ecological corridors in the aquatic ecosystem (AEC) were 107.67 km long, including 57.86 km of pinch points and 14.24 km of barriers, indicating poor substitutability of the AEC. Overall, the ESP of “three horizontals, three verticals, and four clusters” were identified, where sources, pinch points and barriers were the priority areas for protection and restoration in constructing it. Existing protection spaces were within the ecological source range, and the identification results of the ecological corridor were highly consistent with the actual situation, verifying the ecological significance of the identification framework. This study focuses on the needs of urban residents, combining the intrinsic quality and extrinsic risks of urban ecological land, proposes an integrated framework for identifying urban ecological sources, identifies the spatial range of ecological corridors and their key areas based on circuit theory, and attempts to provide a quantitative framework and case reference for ESP construction in other urban areas.

Integrating ecosystem service supply–demand and ecological risk assessment for urban planning: A case study in Beijing, China

The balance between ecosystem service supply–demand and landscape ecological risk are two crucial aspects influencing the sustainable development of regional ecosystems. Current evaluations ignore these aspects and lead to partial landscape planning in urban areas. As a result, a framework was built for regional planning in urban areas based on multidimensional evaluations of ecosystems for high-efficiency land use planning. First, to determine the ecosystem service balance in regional scale, the supply and demand of five ecosystem services were quantified—biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration, water conservation, food production, and landscape recreation. Second, landscape ecological risks were identified using the “natural–social–landscape” research framework combined with spatial principal component analysis. Third, spatial clustering analysis of ecosystem service supply–demand ratios and landscape ecological risks was then performed through spatial autocorrelation, which aimed to identify areas for protection and restoration priority. Finally, GeoDetector was used to determine the main factors influencing ecosystem service balance and landscape ecological risks and develop targeted planning measures. The results revealed an imbalance in total ecosystem service supply–demand in Beijing's plain area, coupled with a high level of landscape ecological risk. The combined ecosystem service supply–demand ratios exhibited a significant negative correlation and aggregation with landscape ecological risk, and the significant area accounted for approximately 31.9% of the total area. Priority areas for protection and restoration accounted for 10.39% and 19.94%, respectively, of the total regional area. Land use, distance to settlements, and vegetation cover were the primary environmental variables influencing the distributions of the combined ecosystem service supply–demand ratios and landscape ecological risk. So, this study emphasizes the need to strengthen intensive land use and prevent the uncontrolled expansion of urban land and settlements. It is crucial to enhance urban green infrastructure construction, promote the development of biodiversity-friendly agriculture, and implement measures such as afforestation restoration to increase regional vegetation cover. Overall, by integrating a framework of ecosystem services and landscape ecological risk, a comprehensive scientific reference can be provided for the efficient land use and sustainable development planning in urban areas.

Assessing fish–fishery dynamics from a spatially explicit metapopulation perspective reveals winners and losers in fisheries management

Abstract Sustainable management of living resources must reconcile biodiversity conservation and socioeconomic viability of human activities. In the case of fisheries, sustainable management design is made challenging by the complex spatiotemporal interactions between fish and fisheries. We develop a comprehensive metapopulation framework integrating data on species life‐history traits, connectivity and habitat distribution to identify priority areas for fishing regulation and assess how management impacts are spatially distributed. We trial this approach on European hake fisheries in the north‐western Mediterranean, where we assess area‐based management scenarios in terms of stock status and fishery productivity to prioritize areas for protection. Model simulations show that local fishery closures have the potential to enhance both spawning stock biomass and landings on a regional scale compared to a status quo scenario, but that improving protection is easier than increasing productivity. Moreover, the interaction between metapopulation dynamics and the redistribution of fishing effort following local closures implies that benefits and drawbacks are heterogeneously distributed in space, the former being concentrated in the proximity of the protected site. A network analysis shows that priority areas for protection are those with the highest connectivity (as expressed by network metrics) if the objective is to improve the spawning stock, while no significant relationship emerges between connectivity and potential for increased landings. Synthesis and applications. Our framework provides a tool for (1) assessing area‐based management measures aimed at improving fisheries outcomes in terms of both conservation and socioeconomic viability and (2) describing the spatial distribution of costs and benefits, which can help guide effective management and gain stakeholder support. Adult dispersal remains the main source of uncertainty that needs to be investigated to effectively apply our model to fisheries regulation.

Identification of ecological improvement zones in different ecological functional zones in northwest Hubei, China

In order to protect natural ecosystems, areas that can provide higher ecosystem services are usually designated as ecological priority protection areas. However, some areas with good natural and socio-cultural conditions (called ecological improvement zones in this study, EIZs) that do not provide the highest ecosystem services are often ignored. Therefore, this study attempts to use ecological functional zones as the research unit. And delineating the EIZs by combining multiple critical impact thresholds of ecosystem health (EH) change. Northwestern Hubei Province (NWHB), an important ecological function area in China, was selected as the study area. The results show that (1) the landscape of cultivated land tends to be fragmented, due to being occupied by a large amount of rural–urban land; (2) from 2000 to 2020, the EH in NWHB gradually improved; (3) spatially, the western region of NWHB is dominated by multiple ESs synergetic zone, while the eastern region is a food provision zone; and (4) except for GDP and population density, which are monotonically negatively correlated with EH, all other natural and anthropogenic factors have critical impact thresholds. The critical impact thresholds vary significantly among different ecological functional zones in different periods (e.g., In biodiversity - carbon storage synergetic zone, the threshold of DEM of around less than 1150 m in 2000 decreased to 480 m in 2005 with a clear trend of EH improvement). Meanwhile, from 2000 to 2020, EIZs are mainly distributed in key synergistic bundles in different periods. This study aims to provide services for the planning and management of ecological functional zones.

Unveiling recharge sources and dominant processes for alluvial aquifers using hydrochemical and isotopic techniques

The study deals with the hydrochemistry (EC, DO, pH, HCO3–, SO2-4, Cl−, Ca2+, Mg+, Na+, and K+) and isotopic studies (18O, 2H, and 3H) of the groundwater of the Thal Doab, between River Indus and Jhelum, to delineate the sources of recharge and quality of groundwater. The groundwater based on isotopic data is recharged by two sources: the Indus River and rainfall shown by the depleted and enriched isotopic concentrations. The tritium concentrations revealed the short residence time of shallow groundwater as compared to the deeper groundwater. Furthermore, a deep groundwater upwelling zone has also been identified. Furthermore, it was found that the groundwater evolved in response to rock–water interaction, evaporation, precipitation, land use changes, and other anthropogenic activities. The groundwater system in the Chashma area is relatively safe for consumption. Future planning for the groundwater recharge zones should be the priority areas for protection, by the government water management and public health departments.

Conservation planning for the endemic and endangered medicinal plants under the climate change and human disturbance: a case study of Gentiana manshurica in China.

Human activities and climate change have significantly impacted the quantity and sustainable utilization of medicinal plants. Gentiana manshurica Kitagawa, a high-quality original species of Gentianae Radix et Rhizoma, has significant medicinal value. However, wild resources have experienced a sharp decline due to human excavation, habitat destruction, and other factors. Consequently, it has been classified as an Endangered (EN) species on the IUCN Red List and is considered a third-level national key-protected medicinal material in China. The effects of climate change on G. manshurica are not yet known in the context of the severe negative impacts of climate change on most species. In this study, an optimized MaxEnt model was used to predict the current and future potential distribution of G. manshurica. In addition, land use data in 1980, 2000, and 2020 were used to calculate habitat quality by InVEST model and landscape fragmentation by the Fragstats model. Finally, using the above-calculated results, the priority protection areas and wild tending areas of G. manshurica were planned in ZONATION software. The results show that the suitable area is mainly distributed in the central part of the Songnen Plain. Bio15, bio03, bio01, and clay content are the environmental variables affecting the distribution. In general, the future potential distribution is expected to show an increasing trend. However, the species is expected to become threatened as carbon emission scenarios and years increase gradually. At worst, the high suitability area is expected to disappear completely under SSP585-2090s. Combined with the t-test, this could be due to pressure from bio01. The migration trends of climate niche centroid are inconsistent and do not all move to higher latitudes under different carbon emission scenarios. Over the past 40 years, habitat quality in the current potential distribution has declined yearly, and natural habitat has gradually fragmented. Existing reserves protect only 9.52% of G. manshurica's priority conservation area. To avoid extinction risk and increase the practicality of the results, we clarified the hotspot counties of priority protection area gaps and wild tending areas. These results can provide an essential reference and decision basis for effectively protecting G. manshurica under climate change.

How to Optimize High-Value GEP Areas to Identify Key Areas for Protection and Restoration: The Integration of Ecology and Complex Networks

Identifying and protecting key sites of ecological assets and improving spatial connectivity and accessibility are important measures taken to protect ecological diversity. This study takes Guangxi as the research area. Based on the gross ecosystem product (GEP), the ecological source is identified, and the initial ecological network (EN) is constructed by identifying the ecological corridor with the minimum cumulative resistance model. The internal defects of the initial ecological network are extracted using the circuit theory, the priority areas for restoration and protection with clear spatial positions are determined according to the complex network analysis, and the network’s performance before and after optimization is comprehensively evaluated. The results show that 456 initial ecological sources and 1219 ecological corridors have been identified, forming the initial ecological network of Guangxi. Based on the circuit theory, 168 ecological barriers, 83 ecological pinch points, and 71 ecological stepping stones were extracted for network optimization. After optimizing the ecological network, there are 778 ecological sources with a total area of 73,950.56 km2 and 2078 ecological corridors with a total length of 23,922.07 km. The GEP of the optimized structure is 13.33% higher than that of the non-optimized structure. The priority areas for protection are distributed in a large area, and the attached GEP reaches USD 118 billion, accounting for 72% of the total GEP attached to the optimized ecological source area. The priority areas for restoration are scattered in small patches, with a GEP of USD 19.27 billion. The robustness and connectivity of the optimized ecological network have been improved obviously. This study attempts to identify key sites of ecological assets and the priority regions for restoration and conservation using genuine geographical location and reference materials for regional ecological network optimization and implementation.

Determination Conservation Priority Areas and Taxa in Terms of Birds: The Case of Aksaray

Growing environmental challenges worldwide and the lack of resources to tackle them require conservationists to set priorities for action. As known; protected areas will be needed as species change their distribution over time due to global climate change, drought, and complete habitat destruction. Although; conservation targets have been met for most species, some conservation features remain unprotected, especially for threatened bird species. There are certain habitat types in Aksaray province where target species belonging to different bird groups are concentrated. Herein; we identify these priority areas for conservation for the current and future estimated distributions of bird species. For this purpose; field studies have been carried out for two years (2015-2017) to represent different habitat types besides bird species detected within the borders of the province. According to our findings; three different habitats (wetland, swamp, and steppe) rich in target species were determined as priority areas for protection. In addition, five different bird species (Vanellus vanellus, Limosa limosa, Numenius arquata, Circus macrourus, Streptopelia turtur) observed in these habitats are in the Vu (Vulnerable) and NT (Near Threatened) categories according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. As a result;both the protection and monitoring of the identified habitats and taxa that directly reflect the health of the habitat will facilitate the ustainability of priority areas in future. This study could be a resource for future regulation of conservation strategies

Optimized Plant Diversity and Carbon Storage for Priority Protection Areas in China

Biodiversity and carbon storage are two key ecosystem functions that are crucial to protect and maintain ecosystem balance. However, there is often little overlap between hotspots for these two different conservation purposes. Additionally, it is not well understood how these different spatial metrics affect these functions in protected ecosystems in China. Here, we explored the relationships between plant diversity metrics and carbon storage by using a large vascular plant distribution dataset, as well as soil fragile organic carbon and biomass carbon datasets in specific spatial areas across China. We also defined priority protection areas (PPAs) using a conservation prioritization method, where 30% of the study areas displayed the highest combined conservation value in carbon storage and plant species richness (SR), phylogenetic diversity (PD), phylogenetic endemism (PE) and evolutionary distinctness (ED). Our results indicated that the correlations between biodiversity metrics and carbon storage were very weak in spatial relationship. However, by including both of these functions in conservation targets, the PPAs could account for more than 95% of the species and evolutionary diversity (PD, ED), and stored large amounts of carbon. Additionally, we broadly divided the PPAs into win–win, high plant diversity, and high carbon areas based on the overlap of biodiversity and carbon storage hotspots. Altogether, our results highlight the importance of understanding and optimizing conservation efforts for different ecosystem functions in different PPAs. Ultimately, this work establishes an urgent need to expand protection in these areas to support mutual biodiversity and carbon storage beneficial solutions.

Spatial coupling mechanism of biocultural diversity: case of Beichuan-River-Source National Nature Reserve, Qinghai, China

ABSTRACT Biocultural diversity is an important result and outstanding representation of human-land relationship. This study established a novel framework for evaluating the coupling mechanism of biocultural diversity beyond the nature-culture dualism. Taking the Beichuan-River-Source National Nature Reserve (BRSNNR) as an example, combined with regional characteristics, Coupling Coordination Degree Model (CCDM) and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) were used to explore the correlation mechanism between natural systems and cultural systems in protected areas. The research results indicated that BRSNNR had five types of landscape character areas with outstanding natural and cultural characteristics; the spatial distribution of biodiversity and cultural diversity was highly overlapping, forming a ‘high-medium-low’ three-level biocultural diversity area. Analysis demonstrated that positive or negative feedback patterns between natural and cultural systems contributed to the formation of representations of biocultural diversity. Altitude, animals, and traffic conditions are important drivers for the biological and cultural diversity in protected areas. At the same time, residents’ emotions and behaviors have a direct impact on the formation of biocultural diversity. The research suggests that the priority protection areas and functional divisions of protected areas should be delineated according to the evaluation results of biocultural diversity, and thresholds should be calculated and set for the constraints. This method is conducive to the improvement of the system’s ability to deal with risks and the formation of the action mechanism of ‘factor interaction-system interaction-biocultural diversity representation’ in protected areas.

Identifying priority protection areas of key food resources of the giant panda.

Animals that live in seasonal environments adjust their reproduction cycle to optimize seasonal forage quality. Giant pandas ( Ailuropoda melanoleuca) are seasonal altitudinal migrants that feed on bamboo shoots and leaves with different nutritional quality. However, the importance of bamboo shoots to giant pandas, especially small and isolated populations, is not fully appreciated. Here, we explored whether mating time of giant pandas is shaped by bamboo shoot phenology. We also assessed the intensity of ongoing bamboo shoot harvesting by local communities in 42 giant panda reserves based on questionnaire surveys. Varying intensity and protection levels of bamboo shoot harvesting were found. From these data, we developed a priority ranking scheme of protection areas for this key food resource. Our study showed that pandas time their mating behavior to coincide with bamboo shoot phenology due to the high nutritional demands associated with mating and pregnancy. We also found that bamboo shoots were not well protected in many places. Liangshan, Daxiangling, and Xiaoxiangling, containing the most isolated panda populations, were identified as the areas with the most urgent need of protection. Furthermore, equal attention should be paid to the QiongL-B population, as this region holds considerable potential to serve as a corridor between the Minshan and Qionglai populations. To address the challenges posed by bamboo shoot harvesting, we recommend establishing more practical bamboo shoot management policies, increasing public awareness of bamboo shoot protection, and providing alternative sources of income for local communities.

Integrating larval connectivity into the marine conservation decision-making process across spatial scales.

Larval dispersal connectivity is typically integrated into spatial conservation decisions at regional or national scales, but implementing agencies struggle with translating these methods to local scales. We used larval dispersal connectivity at regional (hundreds of kilometers) and local (tens of kilometers) scales to aid in design of networks of no-take reserves in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. We used Marxan with Connectivity informed by biophysical larval dispersal models and remotely sensed coral reef habitat data to design marine reserve networks for 4 commercially important reef species across the region. We complemented regional spatial prioritization with decision trees that combined network-based connectivity metrics and habitat quality to design reserve boundaries locally. Decision trees were used in consensus-based workshops with stakeholders to qualitatively assess site desirability, and Marxan was used to identify areas for subsequent network expansion. Priority areas for protection and expected benefits differed among species, with little overlap in reserve network solutions. Because reef quality varied considerably across reefs, we suggest reef degradation must inform the interpretation of larval dispersal patterns and the conservation benefits achievable from protecting reefs. Our methods can be readily applied by conservation practitioners, in this region and elsewhere, to integrate connectivity data across multiple spatial scales.

Localized recharge processes in the NE Mekong Delta and implications for groundwater quality

Understanding recharge in the Mekong Delta is critical for the delta's groundwater resources, and requires the investigation of recharge processes at the local scale. In this study of the north eastern area of the Mekong Delta, time-series of environmental tracer data (δ18O, δ2H, major ions and 3H) and markers of rural pollution (NH4 and NO3) were used to highlight localized recharge and impacts on groundwater quality. Results highlighted new hydrological insights into recharge processes, including that the Pleistocene aquifer receives recent recharge (< 60 years), predominantly during high rainfall months (> 100 mm/month). However, due to shallow clay layers there are significant spatial variations in these recharge processes, which were observed in the seasonal fluctuation of groundwater δ18O values in groundwater. Wet season δ18O changes ranged from below analytical uncertainty (≤ 0.10 ‰) to up to 0.56 ‰, and the calculated fraction of rainfall contribution to the aquifer is ≤5 % to 16 %. Rainfall recharge via the acrisol soils results in low groundwater EC (20–55 μS/cm), acidic groundwater (pH 3.6–5.6), and may also have resulted in the low groundwater NO3 concentrations (≤ 5.3 mg NO3/L) at many sites due to adsorption, therefore delaying not reducing NO3 contamination. Site specific variations in nitrogen processes includes increased NO3 (to 29.7 mg/L) from fertiliser transfers or nitrification, and increased NH4 (to 1.4 mg/L) likely due to the recharge of irrigation waters. Unlike other recharge areas across the northern Mekong Delta, this north-eastern region provides a groundwater resource unaffected by arsenic contamination. Therefore, these results should inform on priority areas for protection from further contamination by rural anthropogenic activities.

An integrated approach to constructing ecological security patterns and identifying ecological restoration and protection areas: A case study of Jingmen, China

ContextAs urbanization continues, ecosystem stability faces serious challenges. Ecological security patterns have become a main tool with which the contradictions between economic development and ecological security can be alleviated and even solved. ObjectiveIn this study, ecological patches were identified based on ecosystem services, and ecological corridors were derived using a minimum cumulative resistance model. We analyzed the importance and connectivity of ecological corridors using a gravity model and the probability of connectivity index and identified key restoration and protection areas. ResultsThe results show that (1) 72 ecological patches were identified in Jingmen, and important patches were distributed in the western mountainous areas of Jingmen. (2) The corridor connectivity in Jingmen needs to be improved. The 71 ecological corridors with the lowest cumulative resistance were identified; these corridors were mainly concentrated in mountainous areas, forest parks, and wetland parks. ConclusionWe suggested 100–200 m as the ecological corridor width in Jingmen, as this width could balance the economic development, ecological conservation, and food security priorities. We identified 15 priority protection areas and 11 priority restoration areas that urgently require reasonable ecological restoration in Jingmen. This construction of an ecological security pattern in Jingmen provides a scientific reference for urban ecological planning and urban spatial layout planning and achieves a win–win situation in which both smart urban growth and ecological protection can be realized.

Linking MSPA and Circuit Theory to Identify the Spatial Range of Ecological Networks and Its Priority Areas for Conservation and Restoration in Urban Agglomeration

Rapid urbanization has led to the continuous degradation of natural ecological space within large urban agglomerations, triggering landscape fragmentation and habitat loss, which poses a great threat to regional ecological sustainability. Ecological networks (ENs) are a comprehensive control scheme to protect regional ecological sustainability. However, in the current research about ENs, most studies can only determine the orientation of ecological corridors but not their specific spatial range. This leads to the fact that ENs can only be abstract concepts composed of points and lines, and cannot be implemented into concrete spatial planning. In this study, taking the Shandong Peninsula urban agglomeration as an example, ecological sources were identified by morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA) and habitat quality assessment, ecological resistance surfaces were constructed based on habitat risk assessment (HRA). And circuit theory was used to simulate the ecosystem processes in heterogeneous landscapes via by calculating the cumulative current value and cumulative current recovery value, to identify the spatial range and key areas of ecological corridors. The results showed that the ENs includes 6,263.73 km2 of ecological sources, 12,136.61 km2 of ecological corridors, 283.61 km2 of pinch points and 347.51 km2 of barriers. Specifically, ecological sources were distributed in a spatial pattern of five groups, and ecological corridors were short and dense within groups, long in distance and narrow in width between groups. The pinch points and barriers mainly exist in the ecological corridors connecting the inner and outer parts of the central city and in the inter-group corridors. In order to ensure the connectivity and effectiveness of ENs, it is necessary to focus on the pinch points and barriers and include them in the priority areas for protection and restoration. Based on MSPA and circuit theory, this study provides a new method for determining the spatial range of ENs and the specific locations of priority areas, and provides a feasible solution for the concrete implementation of ENs to achieve effective ecological protection and restoration.

Effects of Poplar Ecological Retreat on Habitat Suitability for Migratory Birds in China’s Dongting Lake Wetland

The Poplar Ecological Retreat (PER) project in Dongting Lake wetland is an important measure in response to China’s ecological civilization construction policy, it aims to remove eastern cottonwoods (Populus deltoides) that artificial large-scale planted in this area and restore the natural state of the wetland, and has got a lot of attention by society and scholars. However, as one of the most important wintering place for migratory birds in the world, the impact of PER on migratory bird habitats in Dongting Lake wetland has not been evaluated. In this paper, we used the habitat suitability index model based on remote sensing to explore the impact of PER on the four mainly migratory bird guilds (Anatidae, Charadriidae, Ardeidae and Laridae) in Dongting Lake wetland. The suitability included four grades: poorly (0–25), generally (25–50), moderately (50–75), and highly (75–100). The results showed that the area of poplars in Dongting Lake wetland decreased significantly after PER was implemented. There was a negative correlation between poplar area and moderate grade habitat area of Anatidae and Ardeidae, and a positive correlation between poplar area and general grade habitat area. However, there was no significant change in different grades of habitat area of Charadriidae and Laridae after PER. Thus, PER improved the habitat suitability of Anatidae and Ardeidae, but had no significant effect on the suitability of habitat for Charadriidae and Laridae. These conclusions could provide reference for understanding the living conditions of Dongting Lake wetland waterbirds, determining the priority protection areas and maintaining wetland biodiversity.

The pairwise interaction of environmental factors for ecosystem services relationships in karst ecological priority protection and key restoration areas

Understanding the relationships among ecosystem services (ESs) and exploring their driving factors is required for the efficient eco-environment management of karst regions. This is especially so for ES hotspot/coldspot areas that would deserve priority protection/key governance. In this study, four ESs—soil conservation (SC), water yield (WY), net primary productivity (NPP), and habitat quality (HQ)—were quantified across the Wujiang Basin, a typical karst basin in China. Hotspots and coldspots of each ES were first identified through which ecological priority protection areas (EPPA) and ecological key restoration areas (EKRA) were then recognized. The objective of this study was to quantitatively identify the trade-offs and synergies and their driving factors among the karst ESs in the EPPA and EKRA. The results show that from 2000 to 2018, the distribution of ESs exhibited pronounced spatial heterogeneity in the Wujiang Basin. The EPPA were widespread in the northeast and southwest of the basin, accounting for 12.17% of its area, while the EKRA were mostly concentrated in the northwest of the basin, corresponding to 12.71% of the basin’s area. In the EKRA, evidence for a trade-off relationship was found between WY and NPP, and WY and HQ, whereas all other ES pairs had synergistic relationships in both the EPPA and EKRA. NDVI was the dominant factor explaining the spatial distribution of synergy between SC and NPP in both the EPPA and EKRA. Land use differs significantly from other factors and plays a decisive role in influencing the trade-offs and synergies of other ES pairs in the EPPA and EKRA, and it also figures prominently in the interaction with other factors. Our study provides a more mechanistically understanding of trade-offs and synergies in the EPPA and EKRA for ensuring the effective protection and management of karst ecosystem.

Establishment of an indicator system for comprehensive assessment on terrestrial biodiversity in China

The comprehensive evaluation of terrestrial biodiversity is a key basic work for biodiversity protection. Clarifying the status, trend, and driving factors of biodiversity is premise and necessary for formulating policies and measures of biodiversity protection. At present, there is no unified indicator system for the comprehensive assessment of terrestrial biodiversity in China. We constructed a comprehensive assessment indicator system of terrestrial biodiversity in China, by combining the Aichi biodiversity targets of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the sustainable development goals of the United Nations, learning from the development trend of biodiversity assessment in the world, and following the Pressure-State-Response framework. A total of 22 indicators were obtained, including eight status indicators, seven pressure indicators, and seven response indicators. The correlation and accessibility of the indicators were analyzed. These indicators could be applied to not only an independent assessment for biodiversity status, threatened and protection effectiveness, but also for the comprehensive assessment of terrestrial biodiversity to optimize and adjust priority protection areas and protection measures. Our results would provide a technical support for calculating green GDP and formulating regional ecological compensation policies.
