Prevalence and risk factors of burnout among employees at COVID-19 vaccination centers: A cross-sectional study.

Health care workers working in Covid-19 vacciantion centers due to their exponential demand experience burnout and stress. Burnout, a psychological syndrome is characterized by emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and reduced personal accomplishment (PA). It can adversely affect professional and personal well being of an individual. Aim of this study was to check prevalence of burnout among health care workers, to identify personal and work-related factors, and to compare the risk factors associated with the different dimensions of burnout (EE, DP, and PA). This cross-sectional study was carried out among 180 employees of various COVID-19 vaccination centers. Three dimensions of burnout (EE, DP, and PA) were evaluated usinge Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), and association between burnout and other factors were assessed using logistic regression analysis with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Prevalence rate of burnout among health care workers was 73.3%. Emotional exhaustion being the highest dimension (38.4%) followed by Depersonalization (30.8%) and personal accomplishment (33.1%). Young employees (<30 years) had significantly higher prevalence of burnout compared to old employees (82.4% vs. 52.4%, p = 0.033). Additionally, employees working more than 8 hours/day (OR = 9.98, p = 0.032) and employess with less than 6 hours of sleep/night (OR = 0.39, p = 0.042) had more likely to experience burnout. There was an increase prevalence rate of burnout observedamong employees at COVID-19 vaccination centers. There was a significant association between personal and work-related factors such as age, working hours, and sleep patterns. Addressing these factors, particularly by promoting better work-life balance and mental health support, is essential to mitigate burnout and improve employee well-being.

Prevalence of Digital Burnout among Medical Science Students of a Private College, Saudi Arabia

Background: University students are more likely to experience digital burnout as they utilize and are exposed to digital gadgets regularly in both academic and personal contexts. Purpose: To assess the prevalence of digital burnout among medical science students and correlate the digital burnout levels with various demographic variables. Methods: Through convenient sampling, a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 students (86.3%, males 13.7 %) from all programs and levels. The tools used to collect data were Tool 1 – Demographic Data and Tool 2 – Digital Burnout Scale (DBS). Results: The results showed that 75% of the students reported moderate to slight burnout. Overall, and across all subcategories, mean scores indicate moderate degrees of burnout. A significant difference in digital burnout was observed across age groups (F=4.62, p=0.011), with individuals aged 24 and older reporting the highest levels of burnout compared to their younger counterparts. A statistically significant difference was found in the digital burnout scores among groups based on time spent online, i.e., more than 6 hours (F=4.52, p=0.007). Overall, the study indicates that the students experience moderate burnout, which is related to age and time spent on the devices. Conclusion: Targeted approaches are required to address digital burnout, especially in seniors and those who spend an immense amount of time online. Institutions should study in deep implementing interventions to promote healthier digital habits and provide resources to support students’ well-being in increasingly digital academic environments.

Burnout and social support among social workers in the gerontological field in Spain

ABSTRACT This study explores burnout prevalence and its associated factors among social workers in Spain’s gerontological field using a quantitative approach, that includes the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-HSS), the Oslo Social Support Scale (OSSS-3), and the Attitudes Towards Lying to People with Dementia (ALPD) questionnaire. A sample of 253 social workers revealed 62.5% report low emotional exhaustion, 73.9% low depersonalization, and 49.5% high personal accomplishment. Hierarchical regression analysis shows a negative link between social support and burnout, greater emotional exhaustion in women, and lower depersonalization with increasing age. Practical implications for workplace support and other strategies are discussed.

Physician burnout in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: prevalence and associated factors among resident doctors and consultants in Delta State, Nigeria

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by long-standing, poorly managed workplace stress. Resident doctors (RDs) and consultants provide specialized medical care, and the strain of their job predisposes them to the three domains of burnout: Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (DP), and diminished Personal Accomplishment (PA). Globally, this public health crisis worsened with the overwhelming effect of COVID-19 on health systems. This study assessed the prevalence and associated factors of burnout among RDs and Consultants in tertiary hospitals in Delta State, Nigeria, during the pandemic. A cross-sectional design was employed. Previously validated instruments (the Maslach Burnout Toolkit, and the Pandemic Experience and Perception Survey) were used to collect data via an online survey. The questionnaire was sent to physicians selected by a multistage sampling. The proportion of participants with a high grade in each of the domains of burnout was obtained. Stepwise analyses from bivariate to multivariate were done to obtain adjusted odds ratios. The prevalence of high-grade burnout in EE, DP, and PA was 35.1%, 13.2%, and 33.3% respectively. Relative to those ≤ 30 years, the age group 41 – 50 years had less likelihood of high EE (AOR 0.050; 95% CI 0.004 – 0.651). Other independent predictors of EE were manageable workload (AOR 0.094; 95% CI 0.027 – 0.328), reward for work (AOR 0.427; 95% CI 0.205 – 0.892), and good leadership (AOR 0.525; 95% CI 0.113 – 0.929). This study suggests that the determinants of burnout among RDs and consultants are mainly contextual factors in the work setting. Future interventions to control physician burnout in Nigerian healthcare systems should be geared towards promoting an institutional culture of leadership, manageable workloads, and appropriate rewards for good performance.

Administrative Time Availability in Health-System Clinical Pharmacist Workflows: A Nationwide Survey and Descriptive Report.

Background: Health-system clinical pharmacists are responsible for a wide range of tasks throughout the workday. Recent literature highlights the prevalence of burnout among pharmacists and the challenges they face in finding adequate time to complete non-patient care responsibilities. Objective: The objective of this study was to describe the administrative time practices of health-system clinical pharmacists around the United States. Methods: This study involved a survey distributed via e-mail to members of the American College of Clinical Pharmacists Practice Research Networks and American Society for Health-Systems Pharmacists online forums in March 2023. The survey contained 18 items aimed at describing pharmacist administrative time practices. The primary endpoint was the number of pharmacists reporting dedicated, protected administrative time availability. Results: A total of 303 pharmacists responded to the survey. Most were clinical specialists (n = 163, 53.8%) who had been practicing for more than 10years (n = 132, 43.6%) in an academic medical center (n = 138, 45.5%). In regards to the primary endpoint, the majority (n = 198, 65.3%) responded that they are not provided dedicated, protected administrative time. When residency program directors (RPDs) (n = 57) were asked if they were specifically allotted administrative time, a majority of RPDs (n = 32, 56%) responded no. Conclusion: The majority of responding health-system clinical pharmacists are not provided with protected administrative time to complete non-patient care related tasks. Administrative time is one modifiable factor from the institutional perspective that can help to mitigate pharmacist burnout.

Exploring burnout in medical education: a mixed-method study among university of Ibadan medical students

BackgroundBurnout is a pervasive issue among medical students, with implications for their mental health, academic performance, and future careers in healthcare. Medical students face unique stressors, including heavy academic workload, emotional demands and insufficient support, which may contribute to burnout. In Nigeria, where medical students also grapple with socioeconomic challenges, the prevalence and causes of burnout remain underexplored. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of burnout, its contributing factors, and the role of support systems among medical students at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.MethodA mixed-methods approach was employed, combining both quantitative and qualitative data. The study involved 355 medical students from the University of Ibadan, spanning second to sixth years, who completed a self-administered online survey. The quantitative component assessed burnout using the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory for Students (OLBI-S) and social support using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). The qualitative component consisted of a focus group discussion (FGD) with 11 participants, exploring their perceptions of burnout, coping mechanisms, institutional support and factors contributing to burnout. Data from both components were triangulated for comprehensive analysis.ResultsThe survey found that 81.1% of participants were classified as experiencing burnout, with high academic workload and lack of breaks as the primary contributing factors. Female students (91.7%, p < 0.001) and those in advanced years (600 level, p = 0.004) reported significantly higher levels of burnout. While 59.2% of students reported strong social support, particularly from family, only 3.9% had ever utilised the College’s counselling services, highlighting a gap in institutional support. The FGD revealed that students rely heavily on peer support, family, social events and religious gatherings to cope with burnout. However, dissatisfaction with the College’s counselling services was prevalent, as they were seen as ineffective and underutilised.ConclusionThe high prevalence of burnout among medical students at the University of Ibadan underscores the need for systemic reforms in medical education. Key recommendations include more frequent academic breaks, improved infrastructure and enhanced institutional support services. Efforts to address burnout should focus on fostering a more supportive academic environment. These findings are crucial for developing interventions aimed at improving the mental health and well-being of medical students in Nigeria and similar contexts.

Exploring empathy's role as a buffer against physician burnout: a narrative review

ABSTRACT Background High prevalence of burnout among physicians, along with its widely acknowledged detrimental effects on the doctor-patient relationship and the quality of care delivered, underscores a critical concern. Empathy is frequently linked to burnout, yet a consensus regarding the interplay between these concepts remains elusive. This narrative review aims to synthesize and interpret existing research on the relationship between empathy and burnout in physicians, with a particular focus on evaluating whether empathy serves as a protective factor against burnout. Methods This narrative review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive search was performed across three databases: PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science, using the keywords ‘empathy’ AND ‘burnout’ AND ‘doctors’ OR ‘physicians.’ Studies were included if they assessed the correlation between burnout and empathy in specialist or resident physicians, specifically using the Jefferson Scale of Empathy to measure empathy. Results The review included 14 studies. Of these, 12 studies identified a negative correlation between empathy and burnout. Notably, 9 of these studies demonstrated that higher levels of empathy were associated with reduced levels of burnout. Conversely, 3 studies found that increased burnout levels were linked to a decrease in empathy. Conclusions The literature indicates a negative correlation between empathy and burnout, with the majority of the included studies suggesting that empathy serves as a protective factor against burnout. This relationship highlights the potential value of empathy-enhancing interventions as a strategy to mitigate burnout among physicians.

Assessing work-related musculoskeletal disorders and psychosocial risks in bus drivers: insights from a municipal company case study in Portugal

IntroductionThe public transport sector plays a crucial role in society, offering essential services and providing employment to a significant number of drivers. Despite the importance of this sector, it is essential to recognize that drivers are exposed to various occupational risks inherent to their daily work, which can have serious implications for their health. This study aims to characterize and analyse Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSD) and psychosocial risks in a public transport company.MethodsIn the initial phase of the study, a questionnaire was administered to assess musculoskeletal symptoms and psychosocial risks. In the second phase, an inertial motion capture system was used to evaluate the risk of developing WMSD.ResultsThe results revealed a significant and concerning prevalence of burnout, with over 60% of workers reporting high or severe levels across all dimensions (i.e., personal, work-related, and client-related burnout). Depression, anxiety, and stress were within typical ranges, though a relevant percentage of participants exhibited severe and extremely severe levels of depression (7.2%), anxiety (12.2%), and stress (8%). Musculoskeletal discomfort was highly prevalent, particularly in the lower back (68.3%) and neck regions (57.2%), regarding pain over the last 12 months. Additionally, the risk of developing WMSDs was high across the various microtasks, which were analyzed across different bus lines and routes, with Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) scores ranging from 4 (Medium Risk) to 7 (Very High Risk).DiscussionBased on the results, varying bus types and routes is recommended. Programs should enhance wellbeing, and studies should assess interventions on health, stress, and occupational risks focused on enhancing worker wellbeing should be implemented, and future studies should assess the impact of interventions targeting health, stress, and occupational risks.

Prevalence, risk and protective factors of burnout among Korean hospitalists.

Burnout among healthcare professionals is a critical factor which affects patient safety, treatment outcomes, and the quality of care. This is especially important for hospitalists who manage inpatient care, yet no studies have been conducted on this issue in Korea. This study aimed to investigate burnout and psychiatric symptoms among hospitalists in Korea, as well as to identify the risk and protective factors associated with these issues. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted targeting all hospitalists in Korea (n=303), and 24.1% (n=79) completed the survey. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey was used to measure burnout; the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales was used to assess psychiatric symptoms; and the Insomnia Severity Index was used to evaluate sleep disturbances. Risk and protective factors against burnout were assessed using a 5-point Likert scale. More than half of the respondents reported high graded burnout for two domains: depersonalization (50.6%) and reduced personal accomplishment (57%). Conflicts with caregivers, excessive workload, and long working hours were common risk factors for both burnout domains. The satisfaction with nonclinical work was identified as protective factor in depersonalization, and the availability of a research mentor and cap on daily inpatient load per hospitalist were protective factors in reduced personal accomplishment. In the correlation analysis, the maximum number of inpatients and hospitalists per hospital was a significant factor in reducing burnout. This study revealed a high graded burnout rate of more than 50% in depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishments domain among Korean hospitalists, and found the risk and protective factors against burnout. The development of targeted interventions to mitigate burnout based on this study could enhance the mental well-being of healthcare professionals and improve the overall quality of medical care.

Burnout Among Physicians Treating Patients with Multiple Sclerosis in the United States: A Podcast.

Physician burnout, a growing crisis in the healthcare system of the United States of America (USA), is characterized by long-term job-related stress that manifests as energy depletion, feelings of increased mental distance from or cynicism toward one's job, and reduced professional efficacy. Notably, neurologists rank among those with the highest rates of burnout and the lowest levels of satisfaction with work-life balance. However, data on burnout among physicians treating patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) remain limited. In this podcast, we discuss the findings of a USA-based quantitative survey involving 136 physicians who treat patients with MS (defined as having prescribed ≥ 3 MS disease-modifying therapies over a 12-month period). The survey investigated the prevalence of burnout within this population and its associated risk factors. It included 20 questions, including the Mini Z inventory v3.0, demographic data, professional information, and details about work environment and job support. The results revealed a significant prevalence (approximately 50%) of burnout and job-related stress. Key contributors to job stress included the burden of maintaining electronic medical records and long working hours. Despite high levels of work satisfaction reported by participants, it is concerning that nearly 50% of these physicians had considered switching their field due to burnout or related issues. We also explore the impact of burnout on patient care and management, offering recommendations to address these challenges.

BackgroundThe scope of practice for physiotherapists encompasses a range of specialized areas, including orthopedics, neurology, pediatrics, general practice, and public health.ObjectiveThis study aims to elucidate the influence of occupational preferences among physiotherapists in diverse practice fields on the prevalence of professional satisfaction, burnout, and musculoskeletal pain.MethodsThe study was designed as an observational study conducted between September 2023 and January 2024. A total of 255 physiotherapists were included and divided into five groups based on their primary areas of practice: general, neurology, orthopedics, pediatrics, and public health. All participants were evaluated with the Expanded Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), the Pain Coping Inventory (PCI), the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), and the Job Satisfaction Scale (JSS).ResultsPhysiotherapists in general and orthopedics had a higher prevalence of low back pain than those in pediatrics and public health. General, neurology, and pediatrics physiotherapists experience a higher prevalence of burnout than those in public health and orthopedics. Neurology and pediatrics physiotherapists have higher emotional exhaustion prevalence than public health physiotherapists, while neurology physiotherapists demonstrate higher depersonalization prevalence than pediatrics and public health physiotherapists. Orthopedics physiotherapists exhibit higher personal achievement prevalence than other physiotherapists. Orthopedic physiotherapists have a higher JSS prevalence compared to other specialties. In PCI, the majority of them utilize active strategies and distancing compared to pediatric physiotherapists.ConclusionsPrevalence of job satisfaction, burnout risk, musculoskeletal pain, and coping strategies differ in physiotherapists in diverse fields of practice.

Burnout and well-being among higher education teachers: Influencing factors of burnout

Teacher burnout is a barrier to improving the quality of the educational system, and research focusing on this issue is still required. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of burnout among higher education teachers in Thailand. The association between burnout and well-being was determined. The affecting factors of each burnout dimension were also clarified. There were 410 participants across all regions in Thailand who participated in this cross-sectional study. The scores from the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life were reported. Musculoskeletal symptoms were also observed to affirm burnout. A high prevalence of burnout among the teachers was observed, which was also associated with their well-being. Age and workload were found to affect emotional exhaustion. Higher working hours as well as work experience also affected the depersonalization domain. Reduced personal accomplishment was dependent on salary. The present study supported the idea that monitoring burnout and risks at both personal and organizational levels may promote precise self-care and welfare for preventing and relieving burnout holistically.

Occupational burnout among healthcare workers in Central Asia during the COVID-19 pandemic

Occupational burnout (OB) among healthcare workers (HCWs) has significant implications for workforce sustainability and patient care. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated existing stressors, highlighting the urgent need to investigate burnout prevalence and associated factors among HCWs in Central Asia (CA). This study aimed to assess burnout levels, explore contributing factors, and evaluate the impact of job satisfaction and pandemic-related stressors. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted between July and November 2022 among physicians and nurses in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. The survey included the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI), a validated job satisfaction scale, and a measure assessing the impact of COVID-19 on work and personal life. Burnout prevalence and associated factors were analyzed using regression modeling and mediation analysis. Among 2685 HCWs (Kazakhstan: 67.7%, Kyrgyzstan: 19.9%, Uzbekistan: 12.4%), the overall prevalence of OB was 28.3%. Physicians had higher burnout levels than nurses, with job satisfaction playing a mediating role in this disparity in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. A poor work environment and high job demands were strongly linked to OB (p < 0.001). HCWs with severe COVID-19 histories experienced significantly greater burnout (OR 1.346–2.270, p < 0.05). Pandemic-related stressors, including social stigma, excessive workload, and lack of appreciation, were significant predictors of burnout. OB remains a critical issue among HCWs in CA, with job satisfaction, workplace conditions, and pandemic-related stressors playing key roles. Targeted interventions, such as workload optimization, institutional support, and mental health resources, are essential to mitigate OB and improve HCW well-being.

Examining the link between intensive care unit nurses’ burnout and perceived quality of life: a multicenter cross-sectional study

BackgroundIntensive care unit (ICU) nurses are pivotal in ensuring high-quality care to patients with life-threatening conditions in the healthcare sector. These nurses operate in high-pressure environments that demand constant vigilance, technical proficiency, and emotional resilience. The challenging nature of their work can predispose them to burnout, a syndrome marked by emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and a low sense of personal accomplishment. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between burnout and perceived quality of life (QoL) among ICU nurses.MethodsA cross-sectional design was employed, with 265 ICU nurses in the Hail Region, Saudi Arabia, participating in this study. Two self-report scales (23-item Burnout Assessment Tool and 15-item Quality of Life Scale) were used to collect data from March to June 2024. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficients to explore the relationship between burnout levels and QoL dimensions.ResultsThe findings indicated a high prevalence of burnout, with 73.2% of nurses reporting high to very high levels of burnout. The overall QoL score was moderate, averaging 64.46 out of 105. Significant negative correlations were observed between burnout and all measured dimensions of QoL (p = 0.01). These dimensions include material and physical well-being (-0.303, p = 0.01), relationships with other people (-0.337, p = 0.01), and personal development (-0.381, p = 0.01).ConclusionThe study underscores a significant inverse relationship between burnout and QoL among ICU nurses. The data highlight the urgent need for targeted interventions to reduce burnout and improve the personal well-being of nurses. This will not only enhance the quality of patient care but also ensure the sustainability of the healthcare system.Clinical trial numberNot applicable.
