Health Professionals' knowledge and practice on basic life support and its predicting factors in Ethiopia: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Basic Life Support (BLS) is a sequence of care provided to patients who are experiencing respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, or airway obstruction. Its main purpose is to maintain the airway, breathing, and circulation through CPR. This review aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of Health Professionals' knowledge and practice on basic life support in Ethiopia. Eligible primary studies were accessed from international database (PubMed, Google Scholar, Hinari databases) and grey literatures found in online repositories. The required data were extracted from those studies and exported to Stata 17 for analysis. A weighted inverse-variance random-effects model and Der Simonian-Laird estimation method were used to compute the overall pooled prevalence of Health Professional's knowledge, practice of basic life support and its predictors. Variations across the included studies were checked using forest plot, funnel plot, I2 statistics, and Egger's test. A total of 5,258 Health Professionals were included from 11 studies. The pooled prevalence of knowledge and practice outcomes on basic life support in Ethiopia were 47.6 (95% CI: 29.899, 65.300, I2: 99.21%) and 44.42 (95% CI: 16.42, 72.41, I2: 99.69) respectively. Educational status of the Professional's was significantly associated with knowledge outcome. Those who had degree and above were 1.9 times (AOR: 1.90 (1.24, 2.56)) more likely knowledgeable on basic life support than under degree. The overall pooled estimates of Health Professionals knowledge and practice on basic life support was considerably low. The educational status of the Health Professionals was significantly associated with knowledge outcome. The Health Professionals and responsible stakeholders should focus on the basic life support at Health Institutions. The professionals should advance their knowledge and skill on basic life support for the patients.

A Comparative Study of Doctors and Nurses Regarding the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Basic Life Support in Tertiary Care Hospitals of Peshawar

Background: Basic Life Support (BLS) is a critical skill set for healthcare providers, enabling them to offer immediate assistance in cardiac emergencies. In Peshawar, Pakistan, the knowledge, attitude, and practice of BLS among doctors and nurses in tertiary care hospitals have not been extensively studied, despite the region's significant healthcare demands. Understanding these aspects can inform targeted improvements in BLS training and preparedness. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding BLS among doctors and nurses working in tertiary care hospitals in Peshawar, identifying gaps and areas for enhancement. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted from July to October 2023. The sample comprised 249 healthcare professionals (102 doctors and 147 nurses) selected through convenience sampling. Participants were assessed using a validated questionnaire adapted from previous research, covering demographics, knowledge, attitude, and practice related to BLS. Data analysis utilized SPSS version 27, with descriptive statistics summarizing demographics, and inferential statistics (independent samples T-test) examining associations between knowledge levels and demographic variables. Results: The majority of participants were aged 26 to 30 years (47.4%), with nurses representing 59% of the sample. Knowledge assessment showed that 86.3% correctly identified the BLS abbreviation, but only 10.8% knew the correct first response for an unresponsive individual on the road. About 33.3% of participants displayed poor knowledge, with 49.0% demonstrating average knowledge. In practice scenarios, 56.2% exhibited poor practice. No significant differences were found in knowledge and practice based on gender or experience. Conclusion: The study highlights significant gaps in BLS knowledge and practice among healthcare providers in Peshawar's tertiary care hospitals, despite generally positive attitudes towards BLS. The findings underscore the need for enhanced BLS training programs, emphasizing practical skills and regular updates to guidelines. Addressing these educational gaps is crucial for improving patient outcomes in cardiac emergencies.

Nurses’ Experience of Self-Management Support for Hospitalised Cardiac Patients: A Descriptive Qualitative Study

Aim: This study explores nurses' experiences supporting hospitalized cardiac patients' self-management practices and associated factors that enhance the implemention of these practices. Background: There has been less effort given toward activating the role of self-management in the early stages of hospitalized patients’ post-cardiac events. Knowing that nurses’ experience of supporting self-management practice and the factors that empower the application of self-management practice in hospitalized patients’ post-cardiac events are not well defined, exploring nurses’ experiences in the application of a self-management approach for cardiac patients and the relevant factors will identify areas for potential improvement in supporting self-management practice as part of nursing care. Methods: A qualitative research design was adopted using in-depth interviews with eight registered nurses in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia who worked with hospitalized post-cardiac events were conducted. Registered nurses’ participation in this study was voluntary and approached through obtaining their contact information from the nursing offices in the selected hospitals. Results: The defined themes in this study were directed by the concepts of Orem’s Theory, and four major sub-themes emerged from this study: initiation of self-management practices, self-management system, components of self-management for cardiac patients, and nursing practice issues. Conclusion: Initiating self-management practices at early stages for hospitalized cardiac patients’ post-cardiac events ensured achieving better control and sustained practice. Before establishing any plan, certain factors need to be considered, including patient-related factors, healthcare system, and nursing-related factors. Self-management practice for cardiac patients requires the support of multi-disciplinary teams and a well-integrated system. Nursing roles need to be defined and empowered in the healthcare system to be able to support self-management practices for hospitalized cardiac patients.

Knowledge and Practice of Basic Life Support among Health Workers in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of Ghana

Background: The medical procedure known as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can save a person's life after a heart attack. Additionally, it is done to manually preserve full brain function while additional measures are taken to recover spontaneous breathing and normal unprompted blood circulation in cardiac arrest.
 Methods: The study's goal was to assess the knowledge and practice of basic life support among health workers in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality, Central Region of Ghana. The study used cross-sectional design. The study respondents were chosen using a simple random sampling method which included 322 nurses, doctors, physician assistants and midwives working in the Municipality. Data were collected using a standardized questionnaire. Data were analysed with SPSS version 25 and summarized using frequencies and percentages. Pearson's chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression were used to examine associations at a 5% significance level. Results: The study found that while all health care workers had heard about BLS, they only had an average of 68.9 percent understanding of basic life support and just 16.5 percent had practiced CPR before. Also, there was significant association between sociodemographic characteristics (sex, grade, educational level, department and work experience) of the health workers and the practice of basic life support (p-value=<0.001).
 Conclusion: The study concludes that if health workers are given more training and support, the knowledge and practice of basic life support would be increased in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality.

Mixed Reality versus Mass or Self-directed Training for Adolescents’ Basic Life Support Instruction: A Prospective, Randomized Pilot Study

Background: There is limited information about adolescents' Basic-Life-Support (BLS) training. Objectives: In this study, adolescents' BLS training proficiency and knowledge retention of the Mixed Reality (MR), Mass-Training (MT), and Self-Directed Learning (SDL) methods were prospectively compared, following the training-outcomes levels-model classification. Methods: First-year secondary-school students were randomized into the MR, MT, and SDL groups, and after baseline evaluation, at T0, they received congruent BLS theoretical and Cardiopulmonary-Resuscitation (CPR) training. Knowledge, skills retention, and trainees' training-activity self-evaluation were evaluated utilizing ten (knowledge) and five-items (self-evaluation) questionnaires, a BLS-sequence checklist, and chest compressions recording mannequin one and three months after T0. We used the Kruskal-Wallis test for median comparison. Results: At all times, the MR group knowledge answers' median (≥6/10) was significantly higher (p<0.05) than groups MT and SDL (≤6/10), with no significant differences between the latter. The MR CPR skills and BLS checklist acquisition and retention were significantly superior (p<0.05) to the other groups; the SDL group showed limited results. Hands position and chest recoil showed excellent outcomes in all groups and at all times. At all times, trainees positively evaluated the BLS-training importance. Pre-training low self-confidence in BLS practice improved over time, yet not significantly, in group MT. The trainees' majority (62%) preferred the MR method. Conclusion: In an adolescent cohort, MR methods' BLS/CPR knowledge and skills acquisition and retention were comparable, if not better, than the MT method and superior to the SDL one. Future multicenter randomized and controlled studies with larger sample sizes and more limited instructor-to-participant ratios are warranted to generalize findings.

First Aid Training on Near Drowning and Emergency System Activation to Employees of Hotel Quest San Denpasar

It is possible to use the global decline in the Covid-19 epidemic as a trigger for the revival of Bali's tourism sector. Bali tourism includes a significant portion of water sports like surfing, diving, rafting, and swimming on beaches, lakes, and rivers. Swimming pools and other activities are available at amusement parks. One of the most common events in water tourism is almost drowning. There were 9 fatalities and 300 drowning instances in the Kuta beach area alone, according to the 2018 data. Because it is essential for tourist actors, especially those associated with water leisure, to acquire Basic Life Support (BLS) training, especially in saving drowning victims, the success of the rescue of drowning victims greatly depends on the speed and precision of administering BLS. The administration of the Quest San Denpasar Hotel, where Partners work, wishes to offer first aid training for accidents, particularly for drowning victims, as none of the hotel staff have ever had first aid training. Ten hotel staff members attended the training on October 29, 2022, at the Quest San Denpasar Hotel. The training provided is in the form of theory and practice of identifying drowning victims, activating the emergency system, evacuating victims from the waters to land, providing BLS, and sending victims to the nearest health facility. Before the training, a pre-test was carried out and afterward, a post-test was carried out, from the results of these tests it could be concluded that there was an increase in the participants' knowledge of 32%, and from BLS practice all participants were able to assist properly.

Basic life support knowledge among healthcare providers in Afghanistan: a cross-sectional study of current competencies and areas for improvement.

Basic life support (BLS) is a type of emergency care provided by healthcare workers and public safety professionals to individuals experiencing cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. Despite having a high burden of cardiovascular disease and trauma from conflict in Afghanistan, little is known about the level of BLS knowledge Afghani healthcare workers have. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Kabul, Afghanistan, to assess healthcare workers' training and knowledge of BLS. The study, which took place from March to June 2022 across multiple public and private hospitals, was approved by the institutional ethics committee of Ariana Medical Complex. The sample size was calculated using a nonprobability convenience sampling method, and the study population consisted of healthcare workers actively working in a health center who were willing to complete a questionnaire. The results of the study showed that most participants (71.3%) were in the 21-30-year-old age range, and a third (32.3%) were doctors. 95.3% of participants had poor knowledge of BLS, with a mean score of 4.47±1.58 out of 13. Additionally, it was evident from questionnaire responses that providers are not adequately performing BLS. These findings suggest that further work, including regular BLS courses, is necessary to improve the knowledge and practice of BLS by healthcare workers in Afghanistan.

Cost-effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation practice device for maintaining chest compression quality: a semi-randomized controlled clinical trial

Objective Continued chest compression after the completion of a basic life support (BLS) course is effective for maintaining the skills acquired during the course. Using low-cost tennis balls for BLS practice, we examined the effects on the long-term continued quality of chest compression. Methods This semi-randomized controlled clinical trial included 153 participants who completed BLS courses from August 2018 to December 2019 and were randomly divided into 5 groups: ball with rhythm (n=33), ball without rhythm (n=32), manikin (Little Anne) with rhythm (n=16), manikin without rhythm (n=23), and no-practice (n=49). Immediately after training and at 3, 6, and 12 months following training, chest compression quality (rate, depth, recoil, and pressure point) was measured, and intergroup comparisons were statistically analyzed. Results The no-practice group demonstrated a decline in chest compression quality at 3 months after BLS course completion. However, no participant in the ball with rhythm group demonstrated a decline in quality on any evaluated items even at 12 months. The tennis ball group (n=65) and the manikin group (n=39) did not demonstrate any significant differences in chest compression quality. Conclusion Weekly BLS practice with low-cost tennis balls can maintain the quality of chest compression for 12 months. Tennis balls are spherical, give only on perpendicular downward compression, and roll away on removing hands, which facilitates the acquisition of proper chest compression posture. Knowledge, Attitude and Practice Regarding Basic Life Support in Postgraduate Medical Students in Atertiary Care Medical Institute of Western Maharashtra

AbstractBackground: An adequate knowledge and practice of providing Basic Life Support (BLS) and a positive attitudetowards initiating the procedure is very necessary among postgraduate medical students. The objective of thisstudy was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice regarding BLS among the medical postgraduate studentsin a tertiary care medical institute.Methods: In the present cross-sectional study, 160 postgraduate students were assessed using a predefinedquestionnaire based on American Heart Association’s BLS guidelines. Students who gave consent to participatewere included and those who filled the questionnaire incomplete were excluded from the study. Data analysis wasdone by calculating the mean of the scores and converting that into percentages using Microsoft Excel. Odds ratiowas calculated to compare the scores of clinical and non-clinical postgraduate students.Conclusion: Participants trained recently had better scores than those trained many years ago. All participantsshowed positive attitude towards BLS. Clinical postgraduate students are 16.2 times more likely to have an averageknowledge of BLS (OR: 16.2) and are 4.84 times better at practice of BLS (OR: 4.84) than non-clinical postgraduatestudents concluding that repeated training of all postgraduate medical students especially those working in nonclinicaldepartments is very important.

An Intervention Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Hands-on Practice of Basic Life Support (BLS) Training on Knowledge, Attitude and Practices (KAP) among Teachers in Selected High Schools of Patna, Bihar

Introduction: Basic Life Support (BLS) has recently received special attention because the majority of cardiac arrests occur outside of the hospital, The advancement of technology with medical research contributes to evidence-based care for critically ill patients. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Basic Life Support (BLS) on knowledge, attitude, and practice among high school teachers. Materials and Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted among school teachers. A total of 112 participants were selected using a non-probability purposive sampling technique to evaluate the effectiveness of Basic Life Support (BLS) in terms of knowledge, attitude, and practice. A pre-test was conducted before the intervention and apost-test assessment was done at the end of the 5th day. Result: On the assessment of demographic variables, the majority of participants were found to be male (86, 76.8%), aged between 20 and 30 years (54, 40.2%), and postgraduate (87, 77.7%). The pre and post-test mean, SD, mean difference, standard error, and paired test were employed. On assessing the knowledge of school teachers, the mean difference between pre and post-test was found to be 1.82, standard error was 0.03, and paired t-test value was 50.1. Similarly, in attitude, the mean difference between pre and post-test was 1.92 and paired t-test value was 1.43. Analysis of practice skills showed that the mean difference between pre and post-test was 2.00, standard error was 0.00, and paired t-test value was 0.00. Conclusion: Basic Life Support (BLS) is a highly effective intervention for school teachers. Most of the school teachers improved their knowledge, attitude and practice after the intervention.

KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE OF BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) AMONG REGISTERED NURSE AT A PRIVATE HOSPITAL IN SEREMBAN

Introduction: BLS is a mechanism that maintains or restores life by creating and sustaining airway, ventilation and circulation without the need for adjunctive equipment and successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation will increase the chance of survival. Objective: to determine the registered nurse knowledge and practice of Basic Life Support (BLS) in one of private hospital in Seremban. Methods: A quantitative cross sectional study regarding knowledge and practice of BLS among staff nurses was done. Questionnaires distributed to 170 respondents in one of the private hospitals in Seremban. Questionnaire were divided in four part;Part A demographic data, Part B regarding knowledge on BLS, Part C practice on BLS. Results: Data analysis showed that respondents have good knowledge with 143(84.1%); respondent show an average level of practices with 92(54.1%). There was an association between level knowledge and practice with p = 0.0319. Conclusion: There was good knowledge and an average practice towards BLS among nurses in one of private Hospital in Seremban. This show that the educational program can be enhanced to sustain the theoretical and practical while performing the BLS in nursing expertise. Therefore future research is suggested to further investigate BLS issue as this skill is important for the nurses in order to provide better prognosis during emergency in patient care.

Awareness, attitude, and practice about basic life support among dental students

Introduction: A medical emergency can be described as a sudden onset of serious illness or injury requiring immediate medical attention otherwise it can put a patient's health in serious jeopardy, often referred to as a situation risking “life or limb.” It is thus imperative that dental students are competent enough to administer basic life support (BLS) to manage emergencies which can occur anywhere and anytime. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude, and perception among dental students of Manav Rachna Dental College, Faridabad, about BLS. A total of 177 students participated in the study. The respondents were provided with a prevalidated, self-administered questionnaire which comprised 23 closed-ended questions about knowledge, three questions about attitude, and five questions about practice of BLS. The questionnaire was administered in an online mode using Google Forms. Results: The results showed that majority of students lacked adequate knowledge about BLS protocol. The average score of 177 respondents was 7.8/23 points which is significantly low. Discussion: Life-threatening medical emergencies can occur at any time. There have been reports of Cardiopulmonary Arrest (CPA) and deaths in dental clinics. Therefore, it is crucial for dental practitioners to have adequate knowledge about BLS or CAB consisting of (C) circulation, (B) breathing, and (A) airway opening. Conclusion: The dental students lack adequate knowledge to perform BLS procedures with ease and confidence. However, they had a positive attitude toward it.

 Objective: The purpose of the study was to examine the effectiveness of basic life support training on knowledge and practices among nursing students.
 Methods: A non-randomized quasi-experimental design (one group pre-test-post-test) was used in this study. The study was conducted in the laboratory of an undergraduate nursing school. The sample consisted of a convenience sample of 1st-year stu- dents enrolled in the undergraduate nursing class. The study sample consisted of 65 nursing students. Basic life support training included both theoretical and practical components. The students’ knowledge and practices were assessed before basic life sup- port training. Data were collected using the knowledge assessment questionnaire. The practical skills for basic life support were observed and assessed using a checklist. The pre- and post-assessment practice scores were compared.
 Results: After basic life support training, level of knowledge and practical skill scores were higher compared to pre-training scores (t= -12.442, p=0.000; t= -22.899, p=0.000). There was a significant and moderate association between the adult basic life support knowledge form scores and the adult basic life support practice assessment form scores obtained after the training (r = 0.39, p<0.01).
 Conclusion: The study showed that basic life support training improved knowledge and skills related to basic life support practices in nursing students. Periodic basic life support training is very important for competency in this area among nursing students.

Assessment of knowledge, attitude and practice of basic life support among physical therapy practitioners in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

To assess the level of knowledge, attitude and practice of basic life support among physical therapy practitioners. The descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at Riphah International University, Islamabad, Pakistan, from February to July 2018, and comprised data collected from physical therapy practitioners working at four public-sector hospitals in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. A 30-item structured questionnaire adapted from the American Heart Association was used. Data was analysed using SPSS 21. Of the 100 subjects, 65(65%) were females and 35(35%) were males. The overall mean age was 25.54±3.76 years. The mean score of BLS knowledge and practice was 7.27±1.79 and 3.77±1.65 respectively. of the total, 61(61%) had received prior basic life support training, and the difference in knowledge and practice scores between trained and untrained professionals was significant (p<0.05). Gender-based difference was significant (p=0.02). All (100%) participants showed positive attitude towards basic life support training. Physical therapy practitioners possessed average basic life support knowledge, but practising skills were lacking.

Knowledge and Attitude Towards Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Among Doctors of a Tertiary Care Hospital in Karachi.

ObjectiveCardiac arrest is an emergency, which can be managed effectively by sound knowledge and practice of basic life support (BLS) skills. However, it has been globally reported that the knowledge of doctors regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and BLS is sub-standard. We conducted this study with the aim to assess the knowledge and attitude of doctors toward CPR in Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital, one of the largest tertiary care hospitals, in Pakistan.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study, in Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital located in Karachi, Pakistan, using cluster sampling. A total of 285 doctors were interviewed.ResultsA majority of the doctors were unaware of the revised rate and depth of chest compressions (65.6% and 75.8% respectively). While many know the abbreviations of BLS and CPR (96.55% and 95.4%, respectively), 56.5% did not know what automated external defibrillator (AED) stood for. CPR was preferred over chest compression-only resuscitation (CCR) by 91.6% of the doctors. Half of the participants rated their knowledge as average. Most stated that they will not be reluctant to perform CPR in an emergency situation. The majority also agreed that BLS training should be an integral part of the medical curriculum.ConclusionThere is an evident lack of knowledge of CPR among healthcare professionals, particularly regarding the updates made in the 2015 American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines. However, an overall positive attitude was observed.

Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Programme on Knowledge and Practice of Basic Life Support among Nursing Students

A study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge and practice of Basic Life Support was conducted among nursing students in a selected college at Coimbatore. The design used was Pre experimental one group pre test-post test. 47 samples were selected using convenient sampling technique. Knowledge and practice were assessed using structured questionnaire & practice check list respectively. The data obtained were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study concluded that the structured teaching programme was effective in enhancing the knowledge and practice of students.

Basic Life Support Knowledge Among a Nonmedical Population in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: Cross-Sectional Study.

BackgroundProviding basic life support (BLS) at the site of an accident is crucial to increase the survival rates of the injured people. It is especially relevant when health care is far away.ObjectiveThe aim of our study is to assess the BLS knowledge level of the Saudi Arabian population and identify influencing factors associated with level of knowledge about BLS.MethodsOur study is a cross-sectional descriptive study, which was conducted using a self-administered online questionnaire derived from the BLS practice test. The Saudi population was the target population. The questionnaire was divided into two parts: one contained demographic data and the second part contained questions to test the population’s perception about how to perform BLS techniques properly. The data were collected between July and August 2017. Statistically significant differences were defined as those with a P value <.05, and a score of five or more was considered a passing score on the second part. We used SPSS version 21 for data analysis.ResultsOur study included 301 participants. Our participants’ BLS online exam scores ranged from 0 to 10, with a mean of 4.1 (SD 1.7). Only 39.2% (118/301) of the participants passed the test. The percentage of bachelor’s degree or higher holders constituted 60.1% (181/301) of the study population. In addition, higher income was significantly associated with higher scores on the test (P=.04).ConclusionsThis study demonstrated that the theoretical knowledge level of BLS among the general population in Jeddah was below average. There is a critical need to increase the public’s exposure to BLS education through raising awareness campaigns and government-funded training programs that aim to curb the incidence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest mortalities in the Saudi community.

Effective Planned Teaching Programme on Knowledge &amp; Practice of Basic Life Support among Students in Mangalore

The author presents an overview of basic life support for pediatric and adult victims of prehospital cardiac arrest. Current guidelines regarding the practice of basic life support are included, with emphasis on controversial or unresolved aspects of basic life support and lay rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This article concludes with a list of recommended questions for research activities.
