The Use of PowerPoint Presentation in Mathematics Education: A Comparative Study of Endowed and Less Endowed Schools in Ghana

This study investigated the effect of PowerPoint (PPT) instruction on achievement in two categories of SHSs in Ghana; less endowed and endowed schools, using a pre-test post-test quasi-experimental design. The sample consisted of 80 randomly selected students from two purposively selected government-assisted SHSs. The instruments used for data collection were two similar adopted Pre- and Post-Geometry Achievement Tests (GAT). During treatment, PPT presentations were used to teach both groups, some selected topics in geometry. Analysis of pre-GAT scores of both groups revealed that the participants in the endowed group significantly outperformed their counterparts in the less endowed group by a mean difference of 9.20. The results from the independent samples t-test conducted also showed that the endowed group significantly outperformed the less endowed group in the post-GAT. However, the results showed that the mean difference recorded between the two groups in the pre-GAT was significantly reduced to 6.58 in the post-GAT. Finally, the findings revealed no influence of gender in the achievement of both groups when PPT presentation was used in the instructional delivery. In conclusion, the use of PPT presentations in mathematics was found to increase SHS students’ achievement in mathematics and also found to be a good instructional approach that can be employed to narrow the gap in achievement levels between endowed and less endowed SHSs. The implications for practice and research are discussed.

An observational cross-sectional study to evaluate the preference and perspectives of undergraduate MBBS students’ regarding audiovisual aids – Chalk and board versus PowerPoint presentation

Background: Medical education is an extensively evolving field. Not only the medical curriculum keeps changing with time, so does the requirements for the students and teachers. Chalk and board is traditionally the most commonly used method of teaching whereas PowerPoint (PPT) presentation is the new generation most commonly used method. Aim and Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the preference and perspectives of the undergraduate MBBS students’ pertaining to the two most commonly used audiovisual teaching aids namely chalk and board verses PPT presentation. Materials and Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted involving two batches of MBBS undergraduate students. Results: A total of 144 students participated in the study. Eighty-four students were from 2nd year and 60 students from final year MBBS. In our study, we got favorable responses (Likert scale 4 and 5) for chalk and board method in 84 (58%) and for PPT presentation in 60 (41.9%) of students. One hundred and nineteen (82.6%) students preferred class notes over handouts. Most of the parameters were comparable among the two methods except the statements of lecture being interesting, interactive, better problem-solving, and emphasis on important points being in favor of chalk and board; and those of clarity, better diagrams ad flowcharts, covering more topics, and clinical case demonstration were in favor of PPT. Conclusion: No single aid is perfect in all aspects. Hence, a suitable aid should be chosen depending on the topic, clinical scenario, level of complexity of topics, and understanding that is required.

How Is Meaning Constructed Multimodally?—A Case Study of PowerPoint Presentations in an MA Thesis Defense

Taking the theory of multimodal analysis as the theoretical basis and 7 ppts in an MA thesis defense as the research data, this paper uses a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the distribution and realizations of types and modalities of PPTs in this MA thesis defense. The results show that the analyzing type accounts for the highest proportion to make sure the PPT defense presentation is academic and serious. The use of connecting, persuading, and prompting types has a strong personal tendency, varying from person to person. The visualizing type takes up the lowest proportion among them, indicating that pictures are the last modality that demonstrators tend to use. The paper further explores how meanings of MA thesis defense are constructed multimodally, and investigates the characteristics of PPT as a thesis defense genre, aiming to give some suggestions and instruction on ppt presentation for thesis defenses.

Preface

It is our pleasure to introduce the proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Big Data Mining and Information Processing (BDMIP) in Xiamen, July 23-25, 2021.As is well known, new technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence have been applied to many fields of scientific research and have substantially improved our life quality. Also, extensive scholars are actively engaged in relevant research and practical exploration, striving to achieve more academic findings and novel solutions in their research fields. However, some thorny problems also emerged in this process. In this context, it would be interesting to establish an open and accessible platform for scholarly communication to facilitate the sharing of research results and academic exchange in big data technology and information processing. Hence, the BDMIP2021 conference was convoked in Xiamen, China.Due to the suddenly emerged confirmation cases of COVID-19 and the epidemic prevention and control orders, we had to hold the second BDMIP2021 conference by online virtual mode. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. To ensure the participants' health and block the spread of the epidemic, we believe it was wise to adopt an online conference rather than a physical conference considering all the participants' common interests. With the help of the developed information technology and network sharing platform (Google Drive), we believe that online mode can also get satisfactory achievements. The BDMIP conference is co-sponsored by Tan Kah Kee College, Xiamen University and EDTIS, aiming to build a platform to promote the integration of new technologies and discoveries in the field of big data mining and information processing, and realize ideological exchange and technology sharing among researchers, policymakers and industry practitioners.BDMIP2021 included three parts: keynote speech (30 minutes), oral presentation (15 minutes) and PPT presentation, with a 5-minute Q & A session after every report. Meanwhile, Dr. Hasliza A Rahim delivered a keynote speech entitled “WEARABLE ANTENNA FOR 5G AND BEYOND”; Dr. Al Shawabkeh Mahmoud made the other keynote speech entitled “BIG DATA CURRENT ISSUES AND RESEARCH”, where the latest findings of their research in information technology and big data were presented. BDMIP received a total of 45 submissions, and after peer review, 22 articles were accepted. The authors with accepted papers were asked to record a 15 minutes video to present their studies. The videos and TTP were uploaded to web servers (Google Drive and Bilibili), so that other attendees can log in remotely, watch the video, and communicate with the presenter. The videos will be available for a long time and can be accessed at any time, which is neither limited by time and region but can effectively block the spread of COVID-19. More importantly, the aim and objective of the conference were well achieved, with an intense academic atmosphere and fruitful outputs.We sincerely thank every member of the committees for their selfless help in the conference organization and articles collection; we thank all the reviewers for their efforts in controlling the quality of submissions. Last but not least, we expect that the outputs of the conference could inspire and help scholars in big data technology and information processing. The Use of Camtasia Video, Youtube, and WhatsApp in Online Teaching During Pandemic Situation

The aims of this article is to discuss about the implementation of Camtasia and YouTube in Teaching Writing for English Department Students. The problem of the writer in teaching writing for first semester of English Department students in this pandemic situation is online learning media. Not only learning media, but also for the students who lives in rural area are faced the difficulties to get the internet connection easily if the online learning done through Google meet or Zoom. In order to solve that problem, the writer proposes Camtasia, YouTube, and also WhatsApp to deliver the learning material. Camtasia, YouTube, and WhatsApp is an application that can be used as a learning media. Camtasia itself is used to record the material in the form of video or PPT presentation. After finish recording the material, the Camtasia Video can be shared to the students through YouTube Channel. Then the last step is shared the link through WhatsApp group and continued with discussion session. The Subject of this research is first semester students of English Department Program. The research is done start from August to December 2020. This research is qualitative research. The data for this research are taken form the observation and also interview. The results of this research are: After the implementation of Camtasia, you tube link, and also create the discussion on WA group, more than 95% students are able to write with correct punctuation and use capital letter in their sentences, especially in the beginning of their sentence. Moreover, the students are also able to make a sentences with good arrangement by choosing effective words and appropriate order. Only 3 students who still difficult to develop their idea on writing in a good organization, grammatical order, and content.

The Effect of PowerPoint Instruction on High School Students’ Achievement and Motivation to Learn Geometry

This study explored the effect of PowerPoint integration on students’ motivation and achievement in less endowed Senior High Schools (SHSs). The study employed the embedded mixed method approach involving quasi-experimental design in which 80 students were randomly selected from two government-assisted Senior High Schools and assigned to control and experimental groups. Teacher-made Pre- and Post-Geometry Achievement Tests (GAT) and semi-structured interviews were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data respectively. During treatment, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) was integrated using PowerPoint presentation to teach the experimental group while the control group was taught by conventional instruction approach. Both pre-GAT and post-GAT were administered to participants and their responds were scored to obtain quantitative data. Descriptive statistics and independent samples t-test were used to analyze the GAT scores while the qualitative data were thematically analyzed. The results showed that participants in both groups had improved in their post-GAT compared to their pre-GAT. However, it was revealed that study participants in the experimental group achieved better in the post-GAT than those in the control group. It was also revealed that there was no influence of gender in the achievement of the group taught by PPT presentation. Finally, the findings revealed that ICT integration promotes students’ motivation. In conclusion, ICT integration approach to teaching and learning mathematics concepts was found to promote students’ motivation and increased achievement in mathematics than the conventional instruction. The implications for practice and research are discussed.

1st MBBS professional student’s perception on teaching & learning methods of anatomy, before and at the time of COVID-19 pandemic

Objectives: COVID-19 pandemic has brought challenges to learn the anatomy subject for the students. Perception & online opinion has been taken from the students of SVS medical college, Mahbubnagar, on teaching and learning methods of anatomy, before and at the time of covid-19 pandemic Materials and Methods: students feedback has been collected through google forms - online survey opinion & Inputs were collected from the 113 MBBS students of the academic year 2019-2020, who had just completed their first year syllabus in both offline and online teaching methods, before lockdown and after lockdown (September-2019 to December-2020). Present study was done by using specially designed questionnaire comprising of points relating to the present curriculum in anatomy & teaching methodology at SVS Medical College, Mahbubnagar. Results: Students point of view, online teaching like streaming (ZOOM MEETING, GOTO MEETING & CISCO WEBEX) was not that much effective. Majority of the students opted for the best method for online teaching was recorded video or voice over PPT’S are the best option than the online streaming classes. Finally the students have opted for Traditional teaching like chalk & talk fallowed by PPT Presentation. Gross anatomy was mainly learned by the dissections involved by the students and faculty side by side. Histology was mainly learned by spending the more time on the microscope & involved in small group teaching. Embryology was mainly understood by small group teaching with the help of 3D models. Conclusion: The study concluded that the chalk and talk teaching fallowed by PPT’S, dissection by the students along with the faculty and spending more time on the microscope with small group teaching were the best methods to approach the anatomy subject. Konsep Perkuliahan Daring Google Classroom dalam Meningkatkan Interaksi Akademik Di Tengah Pandemi Korona

GOOGLE CLASSROOM ONLINE EDUCATION CONCEPT IN INCREASING ACADEMIC INTERACTION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PANDEMI OF CORONA. The outbreak of the co-19 pandemic requires lecturers and students to carry out online learning as opportunities and challenges, including through Google classroom. This research is a qualitative research to describe the concept of online lectures through Google classroom in improving academic interaction in the middle of a corona pandemic. The concept of this lecture is a design that shows strategic steps to improve academic interaction between lecturers and students. The subjects of this study were 100 students of STAI Ar-Rosyid. Data collection techniques through documentation (odd semester course schedules, class lists, student attendance online attendance, syllabus and RPS, student learning outcomes) were analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods. In the concept of online lectures, lecturers must prepare a planned design in the form of a Google classroom learning implementation mechanism. The researcher determines two tasks namely the task of making PPT presentation videos and summarizing the results of the discussion. The task of the lecturer is not only to monitor lectures when learning lasts until the end, but there must be an evaluation and review for improvement in the next meeting. This is a form of academic interaction between lecturers and students.

Relative effect of animated and non-animated powerpoint presentations on physics students’ achievement

This paper determined the relative effect of animated and non-animated powerpoint (PPT) presentations on students’ achievement in physics. A non-equivalent group quasi-experimental research design was adopted for the study, using a sample of 88 senior secondary two students drawn from secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State. A 30-item multiple-choice Physics Achievement Test (PAT) was used for data collection. The instrument was both face and content validate. The internal consistency reliability of the items of the PAT was established to be 0.76 using Kuder– Richardson formula 20, while the estimated temporal stability was obtained to be 0.88 using Pearson’s product-moment correlation. The mean was used to answer the research questions while t-test of independent samples was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that animated PPT significantly enhanced the achievement of students in physics than the non-animated PPT presentation. A Fundamentals of Financial Accounting Course Multimedia Teaching System based on Dokeos and BigBlueButton

multi-media technology plays a critical role in modern remote education development, which can make abstract and complicated teaching content more concrete and fully mobilize students’ activity, enrich the teaching resources of remote education, break through the space-time limitation of traditional education, and meanwhile strengthen the interaction of remote education. Currently ordinary remote teaching system based on Dekeos and Bigbluebutton without self-detection function requires for professional personnel’s regular examination and maintenance. It takes long time and large workload, brings inconvenience for schools and teachers in remote education. Meanwhile, it also has the problem of disjoint between teaching and practice. This paper has designed a multimedia teaching system based on Dokeos and BigBlueButton to apply to“Fundamentals of Financial Accounting” course including abundant remote education functions such as recording and replaying, desk sharing, video session, PPT presentation. Student condition online inspection device of remote education based on decision-making tree has solved the problem existing in current remote teaching system that it cannot automatically inspect device, thus to further optimize the process of remote education.

Study on the Relationship between College English Multimodal Teaching and Autonomic Learning

University English multi-modal teaching model is an important trend in college English teaching reform. With the development of multimedia technology, multi-modal teaching PPT presentation can give students a variety of modes of cognitive stimulation in the classroom. By teaching examples experimental classes and control classes, study the relationship between college English multi-modal teaching and student learning performance between. Experimental results show that multi-modal teaching model conforms to the development trend of college English teaching, to maintain students' interest in learning English, improve their English proficiency and efficiency of memory are related. Teachers should utilize multi-modal teaching methods to inspire students to a variety of modes of interaction, multi-modal students reading ability. Multi-modal teaching model has changed the traditional classroom teaching English writing mainly to textbooks as the main teaching content teaching. Writing in College English teaching, teachers take full advantage of modern media, with pictures, video and other modes of physical activity, the rational organization of teaching content and students are encouraged to write in after-school training and self-learning multi-modal under. Practice has proved that this teaching model to enhance the college English classroom teaching also has a strong practical significance.

Group-activity- and New-lesson-based Student Questioning in College Chinese Teaching

Guided by the relevant classroom questioning theories, the author has practiced group-activity- and new-lesson-based student questioning-answering and self-answering model (GANL-SQuASA) in College Chinese teaching for five terms in Tianjin College, University of Science and Technology Beijing. The group activity is focused on the tough points specified in the Teaching Objectives of each lesson to be taught following the students’ PPT presentation, after which the usual student questioning and answering happens, but the questioning student has to offer answer to his/her own question and just this last stroke has brought students’ potentials into full play and added classroom attraction. At the completion of the course in each term, students found that their critical reading, appreciating, thinking and expressing abilities have obviously improved and they have developed into a habit of researching and a certain degree of academic consciousness which is relatively weak among Chinese undergraduates. The results of the questionnaire also verify that the model is a good try in College Chinese teaching, while the smooth application to other two courses, Introduction to Mao Zedong Thought and Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics and Traditional Chinese Culture proves that the model deserves spreading to the teaching of similar courses.

Looking Forward: Corporate Governance of the Successful 21st Century Company (Presentation Slides)

This is a PPT presentation that discusses what is coming next on corporate governance (CG) and in which ways the successful business of the 21st century will differ from its successful 20th century counterpart. The presentation is divided into five key messages: 1) This is a moment of lower trust in big business around the world due to successive financial crises, CG misconducts, and politically-related corruption scandals; 2) There is an increasingly criticism on the standard narrative for CG based on shareholder value maximization; 3) One of the few consensuses in this changing world is that stakeholders have increasingly higher expectations about the role of companies in society; 4) There is a new approach for CG and the successful business of the 21st century based on: ethical culture & intrinsic values, stakeholder orientation, and conscious capitalism; and,5) There is growing evidence that adopting this new approach to CG pays off.

PECHA KUCHA : A WAY TO DEVELOP PRESENTATION SKILL

This study is aimed at applying the adaptive Pecha Kucha technique to find out its effectiveness on students’ explaining skill, one of the skills that should be mastered among ELT Department students. This study uses a Quasi-experimental with Randomized Control Group Pretest-Posttest. The two groups (experimental and control group) selected will be ob- served in which the experimental group is going to be taught how to use adaptive Pecha Kucha, while the control group will be asked to explore the traditional model of PPT presentation. The data are gained through ob- servation, questionnaire, and comprehension test. The results show that the adaptive Pecha Kucha technique can develop students’ explaining skill, performance and comprehension. With a good preparation and clear per- formance rule, the technique shows to be more effective than the com- mon Power Point presentation. The data analysis of students comprehen- sion shows that the t-statistics was 6.44, while the value of t-table with the significance level of 5% and the Df (Degree of Freedom) 18 was 1. 734. It could be said that the t-statistics is higher than t-table. It also proved that the hypothesis which say there is significant different of exploring adaptive Pecha Kucha technique than students’ Power Point presentation is accepted. It showed that adaptive Pecha Kucha is really effective to do the presentation. Though, the students need more time and preparation, this technique is badly employed due to its effectiveness and to support the pre-service teachers’ development.

Comparative study of chalkboard teaching over PowerPoint teaching as a teaching tool in undergraduate medical teaching

Background: Teaching aids like chalkboard, PowerPoint (PPT), etc. have been used in undergraduate medical teaching but the superiority of these aids over one another has not been proven. Objectives: The present study was conducted to evaluate the impact of the chalkboard and PPT based lectures in undergraduate medical teaching on medical students. Material and methods: This study was conducted in Department of Physiology, Index Medical College Hospital & research centre, Indore, India. Hundred medical students were randomly divided into two groups and two lectures were delivered on two different topics. For one topic, for one group lecture was delivered using chalkboard, for second group, same topic was delivered using PPT presentation. And for second topic, for first group lecture was delivered using PPT and for second group using chalkboard. Single-best Multiple Choice Questions [MCQs] paper was used for assessing the knowledge gained on the next day. One direct question to note student preferences for these aids was included. The differences in the marks obtained in the two groups were analyzed by independent student’s “t”-test. Results: Students who attended the class using chalkboard obtained significantly higher score in MCQ test compared to those who attended the same content based lecture using PowerPoint (p < 0.05). The chalkboard lectures were preferred by 87% of the students. Conclusion: The results of the present study suggest that chalkboard teaching has the advantage of a better recall besides being the most preferred aid among first year medical students.

Learning style preference for basic medical science: A key to instructional design

Background and Aim: Students have specific learning style preference, and it is important for designing classroom instruction to make a better learning environment. There are mainly four sensory modalities for learning (V = visual, A = aural, R = read/write, and K = kinesthetic) and these can be assessed. Methods: A cross-sectional study of the 1 st -year medical students ( n = 146) was carried out. VARK ® questionnaire version 7.8, a set of 16 multiple-choice questions with a pretested additional questionnaire, was used to assess the preferred learning mode. Results: Kinesthetic mode is most preferred (total score = 1146), followed by aural (total score = 808), visual (total score = 624), and read/write (total score = 584). Mean value: V = 4.27 ± 2.87, A = 5.53 ± 2.95, R = 4 ± 2.21, K = 7.85 ± 2.72. Preference for practical class is 52%, discussion with teacher is 39%, 1-h lecture is 5%, and tutorial is least preferred (4%). For lecture, chalk and talk gets 76% preference with the second choice as PowerPoint™ (PPT) presentation (13%). For PPT slides, “salient points and diagram” in the slide are most preferred (58%), followed by “diagram only” in the slide (30%). Animated image or video is preferred by majority (52%) of students. Moreover, learners enjoy a class with some breaks and humor (48%) while 31% like interaction with teachers. During lecture, 82% students like to take notes whereas 18% do not like to take notes. Conclusion: This study has revealed that most students learn best by kinesthetic method and practical classes. Still, students prefer blackboard/whiteboard teaching with some humor. For PPT presentation, they prefer salient points and diagram with a preference of animation or video. Majority take notes from class. These findings would help a teacher to design their instructional material for effective teaching.

A Behavioral Ethics Approach to Corporate Governance

This is a PPT presentation connecting the emerging field of behavioral ethics to corporate governance in a concise and practical way. Key takeaways are that: 1. We tend to overestimate our ethical behavior; 2. Most of the wrong things are done by good people due to contextual pressures and temporal dynamics; 3. Involvement of software in teaching is not only providing a better support, more clear and visual operation of complex circuits and waveforms of the faculty of power electronics in classroom teaching as well as to the student to understand a better concept. The software packages available for simulation of power electronic circuits are MATLAB, PSPICE and PSIM and many more. In this paper author takes an example of an AC voltage controller to explain the software based teaching approach. Author used two software based simulation tool to explain the AC Voltage Controller and compare the software based approach with the blackboard &amp;amp; PPT Presentation based technique. This paper is helpful for the faculty of electrical engineering to find the applications of MATLAB/SIMULINK and PSIM in teaching.
