Analysing opinion voices in Portuguese newspapers: Who fights for feminists versus who is afraid of feminists?
  • Jun 17, 2025
  • European Journal of Communication
  • Carla Cerqueira

The paper discusses who are the voices in the opinion pieces on #MeToo in the Portuguese mainstream press. It starts from the idea that opinion spaces are fundamental for conveying different points of view in society and for strengthening democratisation and gender justice. It reflects on existing hierarchies and calls for the importance of a ‘place of speech’ that can bring the voices of women and feminists to the centre of the discussion about harassment and sexual violence. This analysis helps to refocus attention on the sphere of media production.

Transições e resistências de género no espaço de opinião: temáticas e perceções de mulheres colunistas dos jornais Expresso e Público
  • Jun 15, 2025
  • ex aequo - Revista da Associação Portuguesa de Estudos sobre as Mulheres
  • Bárbara Carvalho + 1 more

The aim of this article is to understand gender transitions and resistances in the opinion section of the Portuguese newspapers Expresso and Pblico. It was specifically designed to understand the thematic differences in articles by male and female columnists, and the perceptions of female columnists about editorial decisions.A mixed method was used, with content analysis of published articles and semi-structured interviews with women columnists. It was found that this space is still predominantly male, that feminist and gender equality issues are invisible, and that, although transitions towards the inclusion of women columnists are recognized, they continue to perceive gender resistance.

Ambiguidades de escopo com <i>muitas vezes</i> e adjuntos frequentativos afins
  • May 27, 2025
  • Domínios de Lingu@gem
  • Telmo Móia

This paper discusses the interaction between vague frequency adjuncts like muitas vezes ‘often’ and sentential and non-sentential temporal location adjuncts like quando o Pedro está em Paris ‘when Peter is in Paris’ or aos domingos ‘on Sundays’, in constructions like quando está em Paris, o Pedro vai muitas vezes ao Louvre ‘when he is in Paris, Pedro {often goes to the Louvre / goes to the Louvre many times} or aos domingos, o Pedro vai muitas vezes à missa ‘on Sundays, Peter {often goes to mass / goes to mass many times}. The first sentence, whose French counterpart (with souvent) is discussed in the literature, is ambiguous between a wide scope reading of the frequency adjunct over the temporal locating adjunct (‘often, when he is in Paris, Peter goes to the Louvre’) and a narrow scope reading (‘whenever he is in Paris, Peter goes to the Louvre many times’). The same happens, mutatis mutandis, with the second sentence. The interactions between the two types of adjuncts, and whether or not scope ambiguities between them arise, depend on various grammatical factors, which will be discussed in some detail. These include both semantic-pragmatic restrictions, involving the connected propositions and/or the mentioned time intervals, and syntactic restrictions, essentially involving the post-verbal or pre-verbal position of the frequency adjunct. It is also pointed out that the specific subtype of the frequency adjunct, on the one hand, and the specific subtype of the locating adjunct, on the other hand, are key fators to take into account. Thus, for example, frequency adjuncts like muitas vezes ‘often’ or por vezes ‘sometimes’ are often associated with scope ambiguities, whereas adjuncts like poucas vezes ‘seldom’ or adverbial muito ‘a lot’ (as in o Pedro vai muito ao Louvre ‘Pedro goes to the Louvre a lot’) are not; temporal locating adjuncts like quando ‘when’ X, depois dos ‘after the’ N¢ or aos ‘on’ N¢ are often associated with scope ambiguities, whereas adjuncts like depois de todos os ‘after every’ N¢ or todos os ‘every’ N¢ are not. Data from corpora of Portuguese newspaper texts, namely cetempúblico, is provided throughout the paper, for illustration. European Portuguese is the language variety that is centrally considered.

Sexual Harassment in Academia: Analysis of Opinion Articles in the Portuguese Press
  • Apr 22, 2025
  • Journalism and Media
  • Maria João Faustino + 4 more

#MeToo furthered the debates about sexual harassment in academia in different contexts and locations. In Portugal, two moments drove the media debates around sexual harassment in higher education. Specifically, the allegations that emerged at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon (FDUL) in 2022, and the case related to the Centre for Social Studies (CES) of the University of Coimbra in 2023. This study aimed to investigate the media coverage of these cases and their respective contributions to the national debate on sexual harassment in academia. We analysed the opinion articles published online between April 2022 and June 2023 in five Portuguese newspapers, Diário de Notícias, Jornal de Notícias, Público, Expresso, Observador, and Correio da Manhã, conducting a comparative analysis of the two cases. Sexual harassment was broadly discussed as an endemic reality, exacerbated by the precariousness and gendered hierarchical structures of academia. At the same time, there was a tendency to personalize the debate, by focusing on Boaventura Sousa Santos, CES’s emeritus director. This served as a basis for the instrumentalization of sexual violence as a form of political attack against the left, thus weakening the potential of the debates about sexual and moral harassment in academia.

Climate Denialism on Social Media: Qualitative Analysis of Comments on Portuguese Newspaper Facebook Pages
  • Jan 21, 2025
  • Psychology International
  • Ricardo Ramos + 2 more

Climate denialism represents a significant challenge to public awareness and the implementation of effective environmental policies. In Portugal, as in other countries, social networks have been the place where denialist ideas are disseminated, influencing the public perception of the climate crisis. This research aims to understand how denialist discourse manifests and spreads on digital platforms. The research question of this work is: how does climate denialist discourse manifest itself on social media in Portugal? This work has two objectives: (1) to analyze the arguments and discursive strategies used by climate deniers in comments on Facebook, specifically on the pages of the three largest Portuguese newspapers, and (2) to understand the social and discursive dynamics that underpin their beliefs. This work adopted a qualitative methodology that involved manual data collection during the month of September 2024. Posts about climate that were informative were selected. The comments were examined manually and categorized by type of discourse. This approach enabled capturing specific nuances and contexts of denial discourses, providing a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. The study concluded that (I) comments that use fallacies or rhetoric that deny the climate crisis tended to receive more “likes” and approval from users; (II) fallacies that do not offer scientific evidence to refute the existence of climate change were identified in all these comments.

Climate emergency in the Portuguese Parliament and in the media: a discursive approach
  • Dec 26, 2024
  • Revista Galega de Filoloxía
  • Rui Ramos

The environment is ubiquitous in discourses of the public sphere in modern societies. Public discussions on this issue take place in parliaments, in scientific and activist forums, etc., and among policy-makers, but the media recontextualise the political discourse and try to influence political decisions. This paper focuses on environmental discourse, analysing the media treatment of the declaration of a climate emergency requested by some political parties in the Portuguese Parliament, in three Portuguese newspapers between 9 and 18 May 2019. It then compares this media treatment of the issue with a recent newspaper opinion article. The study adopts a discursive approach, aiming to identify the lexical transfer between the specialized discourse and the discourse of dissemination to the lay people, the modalisation operated by the journalist/mediator, the selection of the voices evoked, the articles’ didacticity and some of the rhetorical strategies adopted to persuade the reader.

Slippery discourses of intertwined crises
  • Nov 15, 2024
  • MedieKultur: Journal of media and communication research
  • Ester Minga

The outbreak of a pandemic inevitably links with migration as containment measures usually involve the closure of borders. In the Portuguese context, mediated discourses of these intertwined crises were varied and multifaceted, reflecting the country’s postcolonial peculiarity as both a provider of emigrants and host country to distinct fluxes of migrants. Through a qualitative analysis of selected items published in Portuguese newspapers Expresso, Diário de Notícias, and Correio da Manhã, I will show how similar issues involving Portuguese emigrants and distinct groups of migrants have been differently framed in news items related to the Covid-19 pandemic. The aim is to discuss how this unstable coverage speaks to, and collides with, the deep social imaginary of Portuguese emigration and the widespread idea of a Lusophone space characterized by the harmonious conviviality of different people. I argue that the fragmented frames represent a symptom of crisis themselves, revealing unsettled discourses and alternating anxieties.

Argument Coreference Between Content Verbs and Predicative Nouns in Brazilian Portuguese
  • Nov 5, 2024
  • Revista de Estudos da Linguagem
  • Ryan Marçal Saldanha Magaña Martinez

The literature on complement clauses and support/light verb constructions provides most of the available information on coreference between arguments of matrix and subordinate syntactic predicates. However, this phenomenon is largely unexplored when it comes to verb phrases consisting of a content verb and a predicative noun in object position, such as declarar paixão (“declare passion”), cumprir a promessa (“fulfill the promise”), responder perguntas (“answer questions”), or resistir à tentação (“resist temptation”). The notions of obligatory and non-obligatory coreference do not fully explain this phenomenon, since non-coreferential usage of these phrases leads to different types of coercion, which are relevant properties to classify these phrases. This paper proposes a pilot study of verb phrases of this kind, extracting them from a Brazilian Portuguese newspaper corpus aiming at their syntactic-semantic classification. This procedure revealed a total of 75 such verb phrases. Based on semantic coercion and distributional properties, four major classes divided into seven subclasses are proposed to cover two-thirds of the data. There is also a fifth class with 17 items in which coreference appears to be a contextual property, i.e., unrelated to lexical semantics, and eight hapax legomena. The results provide a new perspective on this understudied topic, identifying also irregular aspects deserving further studies

Anticipatory approach to war and agenda building: a content analysis study of Portuguese press coverage of the Ukraine war (2014–2023)
  • Sep 20, 2024
  • Frontiers in Political Science
  • Paula Espírito Santo

This study, grounded in an anticipatory approach and viewed from an agenda-building perspective, explores the role of the press as a key player, especially in the context of the Russia–Ukraine war. The central research question is: how can communication and the press play a role during war to break a reactive response cycle? The anticipatory approach has proven highly valuable in many fields, especially when addressing the urgency of several policy domains that require greater evidence and research. Communication, particularly the role of the press during a war, can be seen as the final layer perceived directly by the population. The agenda-building approach has been key in understanding news-making processes. From an anticipatory perspective, analyzing media coverage allows for the examination of the inter-influence between policymakers, decision-making outcomes, and various social and media agents. Methodologically, this study applies the content-analysis technique to a selection of Portuguese newspapers (daily and weekly) covering the period from 2014 to 2023. The criteria for selecting news articles included those providing political and strategic information regarding the Ukraine war, with references to international organizations, European Union actors, and Russian and Ukrainian actors. The expected results aim to provide empirical evidence of the relationship between different regimes and how policymakers and political processes are dynamically positioned for future actions, considering the role of the press.

The representation of Muslim women in the Portuguese press: From the perspective of Islamic feminist movements
  • Jul 25, 2024
  • Dígitos
  • Inês Rua

Feminist movements assume a social, cultural, and political position, characterized by their heterogeneity, representing the diversity present in humanity. Within this plurality, Islamic feminisms are movements that aim to find in the Muslim community a space that can be shared between men and women in an ideal of equality, both in the public and private spheres. On the other hand, within the concerns of feminisms, the media took on one of the central issues. At the confluence between feminisms and the representation of women in the media, this study aimed to investigate the representation of Muslim women in the Portuguese press. To this end, informative pieces were collected from the Portuguese newspapers Observador and Público, methodologically using Critical Thematic Analysis, as stated by Brandi Lawless and Yea-Wen Chen (2019). The results showed that five critical themes stood out in the analysis: clothing, sport, fashion, migration, and gender issues. The critical theme that stood out most from the data analyzed was that relating to Muslim clothing, with this issue still being seen in the Western world as a form of oppression of women. Finally, it should be noted thatnews content focused mainly on the international context, meaning the media continues to perpetuate ignorance regarding the reality of Muslim women residing in Portugal.

Online newspaper subscriptions: using machine learning to reduce and understand customer churn
  • Apr 22, 2024
  • Journal of Media Business Studies
  • Lúcia Madeira Belchior + 2 more

ABSTRACT Modelling customer loyalty has been a central issue in customer relationship management, particularly in digital subscription business models. To guarantee news media sustainability, publishers implemented subscription models that need to define successful retention strategies. Thus, churn management has become pivotal in the media subscription business. The present study aims to understand what drives subscribers to churn by performing a Machine Learning approach to model the propensity to churn of online subscribers of a Portuguese newspaper. Two models were developed, tested, and evaluated in two timeframes. The first one considered all Business to Consumer (B2C) subscriptions, and the second only the B2C non-recurring subscriptions. The experimental results revealed important patterns of churners, which allowed the marketing and editorial teams to implement churn prevention and retention measures.

The Renewable Energy Transition and “the People” – Exploring the Intersections of Right-wing Populism and the Renewable Energy Transition in Portuguese Media Discourses
  • Mar 16, 2024
  • Environmental Communication
  • Andreia Valquaresma + 4 more

ABSTRACT Local contestation to the deployment of large-scale renewable energy infrastructures has been increasing. Right-wing populism has also been on the rise across the world. This article aims to explore the potential relations between these two socio-political issues, by analyzing Portuguese media discourses on the renewable energy transition and if and how those expose associations with right-wing populist rhetoric. 465 articles published by Portuguese newspapers were analyzed through Thematic Analysis, which revealed three main themes: Portugal at the forefront of the green transition; the dark side of the transition; and, less pervasively, energy justice as crucial for a green transition. These themes and how they are discursively organized resonate with far-right wing populist rhetoric, such as nationalist, anti-elitist and anti-establishment views. This might find echo in rural communities affected by the green energy transition feelings of marginalization. Key policy highlights Portuguese media communication on the green transition and its injustices, uses similar devices and tropes to right-wing populist rhetoric, which might incentivize support to right-wing populist parties; The media have a key role in communicating about the green energy transition and related justice issues in a politicized and multivocal way; Policy-makers need to promote a more just transition and contest the commodification of renewable energy and the discourse of renewable energy infrastructures as inherently sustainable.

The Images of Climate Change over the Last 20 Years: What Has Changed in the Portuguese Press?
  • Jun 29, 2023
  • Journalism and Media
  • Leonardo Soares Lopes + 1 more

Over the past three decades, there has been a significant increase in political and media attention towards climate change. The media has been instrumental in shaping, reproducing, and influencing the political and cultural comprehension of this phenomenon. While previous research has concentrated primarily on the textual content of news articles, this study focuses on the use of images in climate communication. It is based on the belief that images can combine facts and emotions, engaging audiences and adding narrative complexity to verbal claims. With focus on climate imagery, a content analysis was conducted on 1010 images used by a Portuguese newspaper (Público) between January 2000 and May 2022 to visually cover climate change. The purpose of the analysis was to identify the visual frames used by the newspaper to frame the issue. The primary findings indicate that 35.5% of the images analyzed employ a frame that dramatizes the effects of climate change, evoking anxiety and vulnerability. However, there is evidence of a growing body of scientific literature that challenges and refutes the sensationalist and demoralizing narrative, resulting in the development of novel methods of communicating the phenomenon. Compared to the preceding period (2000–2005), the proportion of visual frames depicting potential solutions and adaptation strategies has increased substantially over the past three years (2020–2022) by 16.3%.

«A daring feat»: pioneering women directors of the Portuguese press in the United States - historical and socio-symbolic aspects
  • May 31, 2023
  • Communication & Society
  • Alberto Pena-Rodríguez + 1 more

The main objective of this study is to give greater visibility to the female immigrant journalists who pioneered Portuguese newspapers within the United States. It also contributes to the restoration of their collective memories, lending special attention to some socially significant moments of symbolic value, so as to understand their remarkable roles within the Portuguese-American press. Their stories reveal the efforts of these women who strove to make a career in the world of journalism, and their determination and dignity, despite their socio-cultural origins from immigrant communities with rural roots, mostly in the Azores Islands. The male-dominated society of both the Portuguese diaspora and the USA meant that the inherent discrimination of cultural and social stereotyping relegated female roles to positions of inferiority and submission. Expected to forego higher education, they were often pushed into low-skilled jobs, even while caring for children and working as housewives. Through a qualitative methodology, based on the scarce few available archival resources, the lives of women who worked as editors of the Portuguese press in the United States are set in an historical perspective. Finally, the most representative aspects are presented of two of the most singular and paradigmatic pioneers of Portuguese journalism in the United States, Laurinda C. Andrade and Mary Nunes Silveira, respectively, the editors of A Tribuna Portuguesa (New Jersey) and the Jornal Português (California), through a discussion of their biographies and their professional careers.

JOURNALISTIC NARRATIVES ABOUT THE “DAY OF FIRE”
  • Apr 29, 2023
  • Brazilian journalism research
  • Thaís Luciana Correa Braga + 1 more

ABSTRACT – The “day of fire” in the Amazon refers to forest fires allegedly caused by farmers in the state of Pará, Brazil, in 2019. This article aims to identify and understand the strategies for constructing journalistic narratives about this event. Folha de S.Paulo (Brazil) and Público (Portugal) were the newspapers selected for the observation and analysis of the case. As data collection techniques/tools, an analysis grid was used (direct observation), and semi-structured interviews with journalists involved in the case coverage (indirect observation). The pragmatic analysis of the journalistic narrative was applied to the discoursive analysis. The results show that, in the Brazilian newspaper, the conflict was structured with a beginning, middle, and end, and produced the sense that environmental crimes in the Amazon remain unpunished. In the Portuguese newspaper, the conflict ended in anticlimax and created the feeling that it was necessary to save the Amazon for the next generations. Relativized temporal phrases: Language variation and change in contemporary Portuguese
  • Mar 15, 2023
  • Journal of Portuguese Linguistics
  • Telmo Moia

This paper discusses the use of relativized temporal phrases as a domain of particularly intense variation and change in contemporary Portuguese. Various phenomena indicative of competition among linguistic forms (with a special focus on the standard variety of European Portuguese, as documented in newspaper texts) are highlighted and examined. Two main sets of constructions take centre stage in the paper. In one, the much-discussed tendency to omit the preposition em (‘in’) in relativized constituents expressing simple temporal location is assessed, using large corpora. In the other, the relativization of duration phrases (or comparable locating phrases, containing predicates of amounts of time) is scrutinized. These latter structures – very poorly studied in the literature – reveal intriguing restrictions, and associate with various types of anomalies, viz., non-standard suppression, addition or change of prepositions. Furthermore, one remarkable innovation is documented in Portuguese newspaper texts: the relativization of time-anchored duration adjuncts with the (preposition-like) connective há (a verb form equivalent to ‘there is’, currently undergoing a grammaticalization process, and shifting into a preposition) – 31: são os anos há que não ganhamos uma medalha (‘31: this is the number of years {we haven’t won a medal/since we last won a medal}’).

Disaster Journalism in Print Media: Analysis of the Top 10 Hydrogeomorphological Disaster Events in Portugal, 1865–2015
  • Aug 1, 2022
  • International Journal of Disaster Risk Science
  • Michele Nacif Antunes + 3 more

Disaster communication guidelines emphasize that journalists should be aware of past major disasters and draw lessons from the coverage of those events. The press is an important source for the evolution of historical disaster and risk research paradigms over time. This study explored the top 10 damaging hydrogeomorphological events in Portugal selected from the disaster database, which includes events that caused human damages (fatalities, injured, missing, evacuated, and displaced) reported over a period of 151 years (1865–2015) by the Portuguese newspaper Diário de Notícias (DN). News analysis was guided by the news protocol. The analysis of the news published in DN enabled us to identify textual marks that present interconnections in the journalistic coverage and produce discursive standards for these disasters. The textual marks were associated with the hazard and risk paradigms. The discursive standards of DN did not clearly reflect the ruptures in the hazard paradigms. As a rule, the journalistic reports contributed to the naturalization of disasters and the gap in public understanding of risks, by presenting an approach focused on relief actions—ignoring social issues, vulnerability, and population resilience—reducing the discourse of preparedness for future disasters.

Public relations and dissent: Anti-racism digital advocacy Portuguese case study
  • Apr 1, 2022
  • Communication & Society
  • Naíde Müller

Social media platforms are being used to shift the balance of power, functioning as tools of resistance for activist publics on social justice issues. This article uses a postmodern approach to public relations with the purpose of clarifying the role of dissensus in social media contexts, connecting it to the principles of the ethics of care that promote dialogue but not necessarily with the aim of achieving consensus. Scholars and practitioners can claim a broader role for public relations in society by considering and analyzing conflicting perspectives in digital communication as a way to engage with activist struggles in social justice and human rights causes. By applying critical discourse analysis (CDA) to a case study that articulates interdisciplinary concepts, this research analyzes the first national weekly Portuguese newspaper Expresso support for the anti-racist cause through its promotion of a manifesto and a Facebook post against racist intimidation. In a contemporary society characterized by fragmentation, taking a public stance on important social and political issues, as in the case analyzed, demands moving beyond consensus-driven communication. The data confirm that social media platforms are not necessarily dialogic spaces and that conflicting communicative perspectives may be a useful way to analyze social change in public relations theory and practice. By taking a public stand against racist intimidation, assuming the possible alienation of specific publics –and “Facebook bullying”– this private newspaper also demonstrated the practical application of the assumptions of the ethics of care.
