Exposure of polychlorinated biphenyls via indoor dust particles and their health risks in Dhaka City, Bangladesh

This study is a pioneer evaluation of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) within the indoor environment of the megacity Dhaka, Bangladesh. It assessed the occurrence, distribution and associated human health risks of selected 6 PCB congeners in four types of buildings (commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential). Dust samples were collected from the air conditioner filters and subsequently analyzed by Gas Chromatography- Electron Capture Detector (GC-ECD). ∑6 PCB concentrations in commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential buildings ranged from 168 ± 59.42 to 3419 ± 1307, 590 ± 217 to 4669 ± 1731, 244 ± 89.08 to 2538 ± 779, and 161 ± 60.54 to 5413 ± 2136 ng/g, respectively. Considering the total PCB loads from each building type, the industrial category revealed the maximum concentration (19176 ± 1141 ng/g), followed by commercial, residential, and institutional, meaning industrial buildings are more susceptible to PCBs exposure. The heavy PCBs (hexa- and hepta-CBs) were dominant over the light PCBs (di-, tri-, and tetra-CBs). All hazard index (HI) values, except PCB-180, were below 1, suggesting a lower risk of non-carcinogenic effect. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (CR) values were below 10−03, indicating no high carcinogenic risk of the human population from PCB-contaminated dust through the exposure routes.

Seasonal trends of PCBs in air over Washington DC reveal localized urban sources and the influence of Anacostia River

Semi-volatile organic compounds like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) undergo diffusive exchange flux between a water body and the overlying air. The magnitude of this exchange can be a substantial component of the overall pollutant mass balance and needs to be determined accurately to identify major pollutant sources to the water body and to plan appropriate remedies. For the PCB-impacted Anacostia River in Washington DC (USA), quantification of air-water exchange has been a major data gap. In the present study, polyethylene passive samplers were used to measure PCB concentrations in air phase at six locations in DC over a period of one year to capture spatial and seasonal variations. Concurrent water phase PCB measurements were used to quantify the direction and magnitude of air-water exchange in the Anacostia River. Two locations had nearly an order of magnitude higher air phase PCB concentrations that could be related to localized sources. Remaining four locations provided similar air phase PCB concentrations that averaged from 270 ± 44 pg/m3 (summer) to 32 ± 4.3 pg/m3 (winter). ∑PCB water-air exchange fluxes were positive across all seasons, with net PCB volatilization of 180 ± 19 g/year from the surface water. Volatilization rate was an order of magnitude lower than previously estimated from a fate and transport model. PCB load from atmospheric deposition based on previous studies in this watershed was an order of magnitude lower than the volatilization rate. Results refuted a long-standing understanding of the air phase serving as a source of PCBs to the river as per the currently approved Total Maximum Daily Load assessment. The study demonstrates the utility of passive air phase measurements in delineating local terrestrial sources of pollution as well as providing estimates for air-water exchange to complete a robust mass balance for semi-volatile pollutants in an urban river.

Occurrence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the sea anemone Bunodosoma zamponii, sediments and seawater from the southwestern Atlantic.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent and bioaccumulable organic compounds. The occurrence of PCBs was assessed in two populations of the intertidal sea anemone Bunodosoma zamponii living under different anthropogenic strains. One location was in vicinity to a wastewater plant (Las Delicias, LD), and the other was a preserved location chosen as a reference site (Punta Cantera, PC). Anemone populations were sampled 4 times (spring, summer, autumn and winter) throughout a year, in addition to seawater and sediment from those areas. PCB loadings ranged from 2.89 to 79.41 ng L-1 in seawatersamples and from 0.07 to 6.61 ng g-1 dry weight in sedimentsamples. Total PCB levels ranged from 0.22 to 14.94 and 2.79 to 24.69 ng g-1 wet weight in anemonesfrom PC and LD, respectively. PCBs concentrations in anemonesfrom LD were significantly greater than PC during spring, summer and winter. The congeners 18 and 44 prevailed in seawatersamples, 44 and 52 in sedimentand 18 and 132+153 in anemones. Redundancy analysis integrated PCB levels from all matrixes and bolstered contrast between sampling sites. Seasonality was also a relevant factor since during winter PCB loading was greater in sedimentand anemone samples, coincident with the rainiest season. Disparity between sites could be due to LD's proximity to the wastewater plant, effect of littoral drift direction and/or asymmetries in anemonesphysiological condition.

Effect of membrane filtration on the fate of polychlorinated biphenyls in wastewater treatment

The Spokane River is impacted by levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that have triggered fish consumption advisories and exceed water quality standards. Select wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) on the river have been upgraded from secondary (biological) treatment to tertiary treatment in the form of membrane filtration to address phosphorus contamination. Because membrane filtration is effective at removing particles, it is likely to reduce PCB concentrations in the effluent as well. In this work, PCBs measured in the influents and effluent of several WWTPs discharging to the river were examined. Implementation of membrane filtration reduced PCB concentrations in the effluent (and therefore PCB loads to the river) by 33% at a facility that produces recycled and virgin paper and by ∼55% at municipal WWTPs, compared to secondary (activated sludge) treatment. Largest reductions in concentrations in effluent and loads were achieved for higher molecular weight (MW) PCB congeners (i.e. those with six or more chlorines), homologs, and formulations. The more modest reductions in effluent concentrations achieved at the paper WWTP may be due to the mix of PCBs in the wastewater there: it contained primarily the low MW Aroclor 1242 (presumably from carbonless copy paper) and PCB 11 (3,3′-dichlorobiphenyl) possibly from pigments. PCBs that appear to be associated with silicone products such as caulk, tubing, and o-rings are relatively more abundant in the effluent of some plants compared to the influent, suggesting that these congeners arise from contamination during sampling or from within the plant itself. At some WWTPs, this contamination accounts for nearly a third of PCBs measured in the effluent.

Assessment of persistent organochlorine compounds contamination on the Lake Victoria water and sediments: a case study in Tanzania

The current study was conducted to establish the levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), its degradation products, and indicatory polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in water and sediments from Lake Victoria in Tanzania. Seven indicator PCBs were identified in sediments, and five were identified in water. The PCBs loading ranged from lower than the limit of detection (LOD) to 10.28 µg kg−1 DW and 0.95 to 2.24 µg l−1 in sediments and water, respectively. PCBs, CB 138 and CB 153 dominated the load, because of their chemical stability and high degree of chlorination. In addition, ten OCPs were identified in sediments, and seven OCPs were identified in water. The levels of organochlorine compounds in sediments were higher than in water samples, implying that sediments may serve as a sink for these compounds. The presence of these compounds is probably as a result of either historical use, long-range environmental transport or environmental persistence. The levels of organochlorine compounds in the lake water and sediments are below the maximum residue limit set by EU and FAO, except for aldrin and dieldrin. Based on the Threshold Effect Concentration (TEC) for freshwater ecosystems, aldrin and dieldrin are the only OCPs that seem to be a threat to the lake environment.

Organic and chemical amendments positively modulate the bacterial proliferation for effective rhizoremediation of PCBs-contaminated soil

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are xenobiotic chlorinated aromatic compounds with high toxicity to both fauna and flora. PCBs can enter the environment through close interactions of multiple environmental matrices such as sediments, soils, water and food web. Biogeochemical cycle of PCBs can transport them far from their initial source of production. The present study aims to investigate the effects of organic and chemical amendments during rhizoremediation of PCBs in aged contaminated soil. Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) was grown in PCB-contaminated soil, whereas different combinations of two biochar (i.e., beech woodchip and green garden waste) and a surfactant (i.e., sodium dodecyl sulfate) were applied to assess the removal efficiency. The overall system’s performance was evaluated based on plant growth, PCBs degradation, and proliferation of PCBs degrading bacteria after 5-months of sowing of ryegrass. We found that PCBs removal was significantly high in the vegetated soils as compared to the un-vegetated soils. Maximum removal (85% of total PCBs load) was observed in the presence of green garden waste biochar whereas less removal was observed with the surfactant application. The observations on PCBs degrading bacteria and plant growth parameters were consistent with the degradation scheme, which suggest the potential role of bacteria in the overall degradation process. We conclude that appropriate combinations of vegetation, soil amendments, and PCB degrading bacteria can help to improve the degradation of PCBs impacted soils.

Polychlorinated biphenyls in stormwater sediments: Relationships with land use and particle characteristics

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are classified as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Concentrations of 209 PCB congeners as well as profiles of the ten homologues were determined in stormwater sediments collected from various (primarily roadway) sites with different land use. The total PCB concentrations ranged from 8.3 to 57.4 ng/g dry weight (dw), with a mean value of 29.2 ng/g dw. PCB concentrations varied with nearby land use. Higher stormwater sediment PCB concentrations were found in dense urban areas (average: 39.8 ± 10.5 ng/g) and residential areas (average: 35.3 ± 6.2 ng/g) compared to highways passing through greenspace (average: 18.0 ± 0.4 ng/g). The number of chlorines per biphenyl ranged from 3.63 to 5.39 and the toxic equivalency (TEQs) of the PCBs were between 1.5 and 18.0 pg/g at all sites. A non-Aroclor congener, PCB 11, was detected in all samples and was dominant at two sites. PCBs were sorbed to smaller stormwater particulate matter (≤75 μm) at higher concentrations compared to larger particles (>75 μm). PCB sorption tended to increase with the total organic carbon (TOC) of the particulate matter in the sediment samples. However, greater PCB mass (almost 80%) was present in the larger particles. Information on sediment PCB concentrations from different land uses, along with stormwater particulate matter data can allow the estimation of PCB loads and load reductions using stormwater control measures.

A population-based simultaneous fugacity model design for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) transport in an aquatic system

A population-based bioaccumulation fugacity model is designed to simulate the continuous and dynamic transport of polychlorinated bisphenols (PCBs) in an aquatic environment. The extended model is developed based on a previous fugacity model by Campfens and Mackay. The new model identifies each biotic species as a populated compartment and constructs all the exchange routes between organisms and the environment based on known biological processes. The population-based design could assist to uncover the impacts of organism activities on PCB fate and transport in the ecosystem. The new model utilizes the PCB loading as inputs and calculates the PCB distribution in each biotic and environmental compartment simultaneously.

PAH, PCB, TPH and mercury in surface sediments of the Delaware River Estuary and Delmarva Peninsula, USA

Surface sediment concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and mercury, were compared from two areas with contrasting land use history, the industrial Delaware Estuary and the rural Delmarva Peninsula (USA). TPH in the Delaware (38–616mg/kg) and saturate/aromatic fractions suggested petroleum/industrial sources compared to biogenic sources in the Delmarva coastal control (<34–159mg/kg). Within the Delaware the ∑PAH18 ranged from 3749 to 22,324μg/kg with isomeric ratios indicative of petroleum combustion source/s, conversely, those in the Delmarva (5–2139μg/kg) also yielded relatively higher perylene that were consistent with natural background levels derived from vegetation/coal combustion source/s. ∑PCB(tri-hepta) concentrations in the Delmarva (0.6–6.5μg/kg) were less than the threshold effect concentration (TEC), whereas the Delaware had received much higher PCB loading (18.1–136.8μg/kg) as evidenced by a significantly higher amounts in some samples (>TEC).

Occurrence, distribution, and dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls and health risk assessment in Selangor River basin.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were monitored in surface water collected in the Selangor River basin, Malaysia, to identify the occurrence, distribution, and dechlorination process as well as to assess the potential adverse effects to the Malaysian population. Ten PCB homologs (i.e., mono-CBs to deca-CBs) were quantitated by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The total concentration of PCBs in the 10 sampling sites ranged from limit of detection to 7.67ngL-1. The higher chlorinated biphenyls (tetra-CBs to deca-CBs) were almost not detected in most of the sampling sites, whereas lower chlorinated biphenyls (mono-CBs, di-CBs, and tri-CBs) dominated more than 90% of the 10 homologs in all the sampling sites. Therefore, the PCB load was estimated to be negligible during the sampling period because PCBs have an extremely long half-life. The PCBs, particularly higher chlorinated biphenyls, could be thoroughly dechlorinated to mono-CBs to tri-CBs by microbial decomposition in sediment or could still be accumulated in the sediment. The lower chlorinated biphenyls, however, could be resuspended or desorbed from the sediment because they have faster desorption rates and higher solubility, compared to the higher chlorinated biphenyls. The health risk for the Malaysia population by PCB intake that was estimated from the local fish consumption (7.2ngkg-1 bwday-1) and tap water consumption (1.5×10-3-3.1×10-3ngkg-1 bwday-1) based on the detected PCB levels in the surface water was considered to be minimal. The hazard quotient based on the tolerable daily intake (20ngkg-1 bwday-1) was estimated at 0.36.

An in-situ assessment of low-density polyethylene and silicone rubber passive samplers using methods with and without performance reference compounds in the context of investigation of polychlorinated biphenyl sources in rivers

This study firstly aims to assess the field performances of low density polyethylene (LDPE) and silicone rubber (SR) samplers for the monitoring of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in water regarding the uptake, the sampling rate (RS) estimated by using performance reference compounds (PRCs) and the time-weighted average (TWA) concentrations. The second aim is to evaluate the efficiency of these samplers to investigate PCB sources (localization and imputation steps) using methods with and without PRCs to correct for the impact of water velocity on the uptake. Samplers spiked with PRCs were deployed in the outfalls of two PCB sources and at 8 river sites situated upstream and downstream of the outfalls. After 6weeks, the uptake of PCBs in the linear phase was equivalent in LDPE and SR but 5 times lower in LDPE for PCBs approaching equilibrium. PRC-based RS and water velocity (0.08 to 1.21ms−1) were well correlated in river (LDPE: R2=0.91, SR: R2=0.96) but not in outfalls (higher turbulences and potential release of PRCs to air). TWA concentrations obtained with SR were slightly higher than those obtained with LDPE (factor 1.4 to 2.6 in river) likely because of uncertainty in sampler-water partition coefficient values. Concentrations obtained through filtration and extraction of water samples (203L) were 1.6 and 5.1 times higher than TWA concentrations obtained with SR and LDPE samplers, respectively. PCB sources could efficiently be localized when PRCs were used (increases of PCB loads in river) but the impact of high differences of water velocity was overcorrected (leading sometimes to false positives and negatives). Increases of PCB loads in the river could not be entirely imputed to the investigated sources (underestimation of PCBs contributing to the load increases). A method without PRCs (relationship between uptake and water velocity) appeared to be a good complementary method for LDPE.

Unraveling the estrogen receptor (er) genes in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) reveals expression differences between the two adult life stages but little impact from polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) load

Estrogen receptors (ers) not only are activated by hormones but also interact with many human-derived environmental contaminants. Here, we present evidence for four expressed er genes in Atlantic salmon cDNA – two more ers (erα2 and erβ2) than previously published. To determine if er gene expression differs between two adult life-stages we sampled 20 adult salmon from the feeding phase in the Baltic Sea and during migration in the River Mörrum, Sweden. Results show that all four er genes are present in the investigated tissues, except for erα2 not appearing in the spleen. Overall, a profile analysis reveals the erα1 gene to be the most highly expressed er gene in both female and male Baltic Sea salmon tissues, and also in female River Mörrum salmon. In contrast, this gene has the lowest gene expression level of the four er genes in male salmon from the River Mörrum. The erα2 gene is expressed at the lowest levels in both female/male Baltic Sea salmon and in female River Mörrum salmon. Statistical analyses indicate a significant and complex interaction where both sex and adult life stage can impact er gene expression. Regression analyses did not demonstrate any significant relationship between polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) body burden and er gene expression level, suggesting that accumulated pollutants from the Baltic Sea may be deactivated inside the salmon's lipid tissues and have limited impact on er activity. This study is the first comprehensive analysis of four er gene expression levels in two wild salmon populations from two different adult life stages where information about PCB load is also available.

Thermal desorption of PCBs from contaminated soil using nano zerovalent iron

In this study, thermal desorption was combined with the addition of nano zerovalent iron (nZVI) to remediate polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-contaminated soil collected from a storage point for PCB-contaminated capacitors and transformers. The thermal desorption test conditions were varied from 300 to 600 °C, both with blank soil and with 100 mg of nZVI added. Next, the effect of the amount of nZVI added (0, 20, 40, 100, 200 mg) was investigated by thermal treatment at 400 °C. The test results show that thermal desorption eliminates most of the PCB load and that the presence of nZVI clearly enhances thermal desorption. After thermal treatment at 400 °C, a removal efficiency of 94.2 % was reached, with the use of 200 mg of nZVI. At 600 °C, the PCB removal efficiency after 1 h attained 98.35 % with 100 mg of nZVI and 97.40 % without nZVI. The presence of nZVI effectively decreased both the sum and the WHO-TEQ value of the 12 dl-PCBs.

From the City to the Lake: Loadings of PCBs, PBDEs, PAHs and PCMs from Toronto to Lake Ontario

Loadings from Toronto, Canada to Lake Ontario were quantified and major sources and pathways were identified, with the goal of informing opportunities for loading reductions. The contaminants were polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polycyclic musks (PCMs). Loadings were calculated from measured concentrations for three major pathways: atmospheric processes, tributary runoff, and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents. Although atmospheric deposition to the Great Lakes has received the greatest attention, this was the dominant loading pathway for PCBs only (17 ± 5.3 kg/y or 66% of total loadings). PCB loadings reflected elevated urban PCB air concentrations due to, predominantly, primary emissions. These loadings contribute to consumption advisories for nearshore fish. PBDE loadings to the lake, again from mainly primary emissions, were 48% (9.1 ± 1.3 kg/y) and 42% (8.0 ± 5.7 kg/y) via tributaries and WWTPs, respectively, consistent with emissions deposited and subsequently washed-off of urban surfaces and emissions to the sewage system. PAHs loadings of 1600 ± 280 kg/y (71%) from tributaries were strongly associated with vehicle transportation and impervious surfaces. PCM loadings were 83% (±140 kg/y) from WWTP final effluent, reflecting their use in personal care products. Opportunities for source reduction lie in reducing the current inventories of in-use PCBs and PBDE-containing products, reducing vehicle emissions of PAHs and use of PAHs in the transportation network (e.g., pavement sealants), and improving wastewater treatment technology.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in industrial and municipal effluents: Concentrations, congener profiles, and partitioning onto particulates and organic carbon

Wastewater effluent samples were collected in the summer of 2009 from 16 different locations which included municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants and petrochemical industrial outfalls in the Houston area. The effluent samples were analyzed for all 209 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) congeners using high resolution gas chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS) using the USEPA method 1668A. The total PCBs (∑209) concentration in the dissolved medium ranged from 1.01 to 8.12ng/L and ranged from 2.03 to 31.2ng/L in the suspended medium. Lighter PCB congeners exhibited highest concentrations in the dissolved phase whereas, in the suspended phase, heavier PCBs exhibited the highest concentrations. The PCB homolog concentrations were dominated by monochlorobiphenyls through hexachlorobiphenyls, with dichlorobiphenyls exhibiting the highest concentration amongst them at most of the effluent outfalls, in the suspended phase. Both total suspended solids (TSS) and various organic carbon fractions played an important role in the distribution of the suspended fractions of PCBs in the effluents. The log Koc values determined in the effluents suggest that effluent PCB loads might have more risk and impact than what standard partitioning models predict.

Modeling the emission sources for polychlorinated biphenyls in India: implications for human health risk assessment

In addition to the electronic waste generated in India, toxic wastes containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are dumped in India for recycling purpose. In addition tropical climate facilitates the rapid entry of PCBs to the atmosphere from the contaminated surfaces. Therefore it is important to identify the pathway for atmospheric PCB loading so as to regulate the ongoing release of PCBs. Hence active and passive air sampling of PCBs were conducted along the urban and suburban transects of seven major Indian cities and from the hotspots and rural/background locations in India during 2006-2012. A sinusoidal model could very well describe the diurnal pattern observed in New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai, which suggests that concentrations in air are influenced by temperature-dependent air-soil surface exchange processes.

The Effect of Polychlorinated Biphenyls on the Song of Two Passerine Species

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are synthetic chemical pollutants with demonstrated detrimental toxic and developmental effects on humans and wildlife. Laboratory studies suggest that PCBs influence behavior due to their effects on endocrine and neurological systems, yet little is known about the behavioral consequences of sublethal PCB exposure in the field. Additionally, specific PCB congener data (in contrast to total PCB load) is necessary to understand the possible effects of PCBs in living organisms since number and position of chlorine substitution in a PCB molecule dictates the toxicity and chemical fate of individual PCB congeners. We non-lethally investigated total PCB loads, congener specific PCB profiles, and songs of black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) and song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) along a historical PCB gradient at the Hudson River in New York State. Our results indicate that black-capped chickadees and song sparrows have higher total blood PCBs in regions with higher historic PCB contamination. The two bird species varied substantially in their congener-specific PCB profiles; within sites, song sparrows showed a significantly higher proportion of lower chlorinated PCBs, while black-capped chickadees had higher proportions of highly chlorinated PCBs. In areas of PCB pollution, the species-specific identity signal in black-capped chickadee song varied significantly, while variation in song sparrow trill performance was best predicted by the mono-ortho PCB load. Thus, PCBs may affect song production, an important component of communication in birds. In conclusion, we suggest that the ramifications of changes in song quality for bird populations may extend the toxic effects of environmental PCB pollution.

Determination of indicator polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by gas chromatography–electron capture detector

An effective method for determination of indicator polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been validated using gas chromatography (GC) equipped with electron capture detector (ECD). The GC–ECD method was validated by determining the linear range (working range) for determination of the compounds, minimum detectable quantities (MDQ), the precision and accuracy of the method for the analysis of the compounds. MDQ obtained for the compounds ranges from 0.0005 to 0.002ng. Indeed the method was found to be more sensitive as the number of chlorine atoms attached to the biphenyl increases. The precision and accuracy of the GC method validated ranges from 2.4% to 14.5% and −7.0% to 14.6% respectively. Coefficient of variation associated with the repeatability of the retention times and corresponding peak areas was found to be 0.0001–0.0007 for the retention times and 0.0014–0.059 for the peak areas. Percentage recoveries for the compounds were in the range of 95.7–101.0%. The validated method was then applied to determine levels of indicator PCBs in sediments sampled from eleven sampling points along the Lake Bosuntwi in Ghana and the highest PCB load of 19.17ngg−1 was recorded at Pipie No. 2. PCB 52 and PCB 101 were found to be the most ubiquitous indicator PCBs in the study area, both with 90.91% occurrence.

Determinants of polychlorinated biphenyls in dust from homes in California, USA.

Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) production ceased in the U.S. over 30 years ago, but these persistent chemicals remain ubiquitous contaminants. Here, we evaluate potential determinants of PCB levels in dust from California homes including characteristics of the residence as well as the residents' habits and occupations. Dust was collected from 415 households as part of a large case-control study (the Northern California Childhood Leukaemia Study), using a high-volume small surface sampler. Dust concentrations of 6 PCBs (PCB-105, PCB-118, PCB-138, PCB-153, PCB-170, and PCB-180) were measured using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Individual PCB detection rates ranged from 9% to 54% with PCB concentrations ranging from below detection (1 or 2 ng g (-1)) to 270 ng g(-1) and PCB loadings ranging from below detection to 960 ng m (-2). Multivariable linear and logistic regression models were used to identify potential determinants of residential PCB contamination based on in-home interviews and residential geographic locations. We observed that residences built prior to 1980 had higher odds of PCB detection and higher PCB loadings than more recently constructed homes. Households where residents typically did not remove their shoes had higher PCB dust loadings than households where residents did. PCBs were less likely to be detected in carpet dust from households that had frequently vacuumed or replaced carpets compared to other households. Since we used a cross-sectional dust sampling protocol and report significant, but modest, effects of these determinants on levels of PCBs in residential dust, our results should be interpreted with caution. Longitudinal studies to determine optimal strategies for reducing PCBs in homes are warranted.

Biodegradation performance of anaerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactor for oil with polychlorinated biphenyls

Aims: The biodegradability of oil containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from electrical transformer by the anaerobic sequencing biofilm batch reactor (ASBBR) with was assessed.Materials and Methods: Two anaerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactor (ASBBR) containing polyurethane foam cubes as inert support was used. The reactors were operated for 310 days at 35 ± 2°C. The reactors with a total volume of 7 L, 5 L effective volume and 3.5 L for gas production, were operated in a cycle per day. The effect of operational parameters including organic loading rate, PCBs loading rate, co-substrate type, initial PCBs and COD concentration was evaluated.Results: The results point to admirable reactors stability and over 95% efficiency in PCBs removal, with effluent PCBs concentration of lower than 10 mg/L. However, degradation rates increased as the initial concentration of PCBs as increased. The average of COD removal efficiency by two ASBBR reactors was more than 92% that corresponding to > 9 μg/L of effluent COD. In over all operation, average of biogas production in R1 was 5.7 ± 2.2 L/d and maximum produced biogas was 8.02 L/d at 310 day. The kinetic studies revealed that second - order kinetic model described the COD removal by ASBBR reactors from synthetic wastewater better than two other kinetic model.Conclusion: Therefore, this investigation demonstrated that the ASBBR have good potential for biodegradation of oil containing PCBs, despite variation of influent PCBs and organic loading rate (OLR).
