Abstract We seem to be experiencing a spate of school killings. Until recently, the Post Office was the venue for such senseless killings. A printing plant in Louisville, Kentucky experienced this phenomenon a few years ago. The scenario is: the disgruntled student or employee comes into the school or work place and suddenly starts shooting. The usual outcome is that the perpetrator kills himself or asks to be killed when caught. To this point, the perpetrators have all been male. Such murders/massacres leave a lot of victims in their wakes, some dead and many grieving or suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder. As intervenes, we must often deal with the question, “Why?” We would like to give simple answers, but they will usually be wrong. The problems underlying such alienation are quite complex and none of the commentators, politicians, or armchair theorists has any idea why.
