Plume moths in the protected areas of KwaZulu Natal province, Republic of South Africa

The article gives 70 Pterophoridae species of nature reserves and national parks of KwaZulu Natal province, Republic of South Africa. New taxonomic combinations are revealed, new data on the distribution of Plume moths in the Republic of South Africa are indicated. New generic combinations were established for two species of Marasmarcha ammonias (Meyrick, 1909) and Sphenarches erythrodactylus (Fletcher, 1911). 7 species are recorded for the first time for the province of KwaZulu Natal.

Plume Moths of Family Pterophoridae (Microlepidoptera) from Shiwaliks of North-West India

Survey tours were undertaken for the collection of Pterophorid moths from various localities falling in the jurisdiction of North-Western Shiwaliks. In all, 26 species belonged to 18 genera of the family Pterophoridae(25 species of subfamily Pterophorinae and 01 Deuterocopinae) were examined and identified. The keys to subfamilies, synonymy, distribution and remarks for all the species are also provided in detail.

This paper presents information on the type specimens of four Microlepidoptera species described by S.N. Alpheraky: Leioptilus minutus Alpheraky, 1876, Aciptilia taganrogensis Alpheraky, 1876 (Pterophoridae), Alucita synnephodactyla Alpheraky, 1876, and Alucita grammodactyla Z. var. poecilodactyla Alpheraky, 1876 (Alucitidae). The following new synonymy is established: Tabulaephorus marptys (Christoph, 1872) = Aciptilia taganrogensis Alpheraky, 1876, syn. n.

New data on plume moths (Lepidoptera: Pterophoridae) of Oman

This article provides a list of Pterophoridae of the Oman fauna. Three more species are added to the previously known 14. For Agdistis omani Arenberger, 2008, described on the basis of a female, we give a description of the male genitalia and an image of the male. For Cosmoclostis lanceata (Arenberger, 1985) we establish the junior synonym: Cosmoclostis gorbunovi Ustjuzhanin & Kovtunovich, 2011 syn. n.

An unexpected visitor

Inside each long and narrow flower spur of the round-leaved orchid (Platanthera orbiculata), a little bit of sweet nectar lures insects. On July 9 at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire, a geranium plume moth (Amblyptilia pica) was seen visiting a P orbiculata. The slender moth was first found embedded in the floral orifice. The moth then flew to a nearby flower and latched onto its dorsal sepal and column with spurred legs. The plume moth could have been pollinating the flower or merely stealing nectar, since several flowers showed signs of already being pollinated, such as swollen ovaries and missing pollinia (when a pollinator uses its long proboscis to extract a flower's nectar, pollen sticks to its eyes to ensure dispersal). Although there is no empirical evidence, it has been speculated that some noctuid moths are the pollinators of P orbiculata based on the size of their mouthparts. While plume moth species have been recorded as likely pollinators for a closely related orchid (Platanthera sparsiflora) that bears similar flowers, to date there has been no evidence to suggest that they could be pollinators for P orbiculata. Geranium plume moths are also known as flower and seed feeders of several horticultural plants. However, it is uncertain whether P orbiculata could be a larval host because the photographed moth appears to be male. So, is A pica a newfound pollinator, a nectar thief, or a seed predator of P orbiculata?

The Pterophoridae of Bhutan (Lepidoptera), with the description of a new species

Approximately 100 specimens, representing 27 species of Pterophoridae (Plume Moths), were collected from the fauna of Bhutan. The taxonomic status of the species, observed and collected material, and host plants are listed, and a distribution map of each species is presented. The following species are recorded for the first time from Bhutan: Platyptilia farfarellus Zeller, 1867; Platyptilia sedata Meyrick, 1932; Stenoptilia zophodactylus (Duponchel, 1840); Lantanophaga pusillidactylus (Walker, 1864); Xyroptila oenophanes Meyrick, 1908; Sphenarches anisodactylus (Walker, 1864), S. zanclistes (Meyrick, 1905); Oxyptilus causodes Meyrick, 1905; Adaina microdactyla (Hübner, [1813]); and Cosmoclostis pesseuta Meyrick, 1906. One species is described as new: Pterophorus karmawangdii Gielis spec. nov.

New data on the Pterophoridae fauna of Liberia (Lepidoptera: Pterophoridae).

There have been no special studies on plume moths of Liberia until recently. In the World Catalogue of Insects (Gielis 2003) only two species are reported from Liberia: Agdistis tamaricis (Zeller, 1847) and Megalorhipida leucodactyla (Fabricius, 1794) despite its well-known richness for other Lepidoptera groups (Fox et al. 1965, Larsen 2005) and its biogeographic position in the centre of the Upper Guinean biodiversity hotspot (Myers et al. 2000).

Gillmeria vesta Ustjuzhanin is discovered in Khabarovskii Krai for the first time.

Five new species of the genus Singularia Arenberger, 1988 (Lepidoptera, Pterophoridae)

Expeditions of Ron Brechlin, Viktor Synjaev, Mildred Márquez, Juan Machado, Oleg Romanov and other colleagues over the last five years in Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia have resulted in significant collections of Pterophoridae Zeller, 1841. The article describes five new species: Singularia brechlini Kovtunovich & Ustjuzhanin sp. nov., Singularia sinjaevi Kovtunovich & Ustjuzhanin sp. nov., Singularia guajiro Kovtunovich & Ustjuzhanin sp. nov., Singularia tolima Kovtunovich & Ustjuzhanin sp. nov. and Singularia lesya Kovtunovich & Ustjuzhanin sp. nov.

SPECIES LIST OF PLUME MOTHS (LEPIDOPTERA, PTEROPHORIDAE) OF PARAGUAY WITH NEW RECORDS

<p>We give new data on Pterophoridae species from Paraguay and provide a checklist of them, including 36 species of 13 genera. Six species of plume moths are recorded for the fauna of Paraguay for the first time. The study was based on the essential literature on Pterophoridae of Paraguay.<em></em></p>

Additions to the fauna of plume moths (Lepidoptera, Pterophoridae) of Uganda.

An overview of 20 Pterophoridae species from Uganda is given. Three of them are described as new to science: Crassuncus agassizi Ustjuzhanin & Kovtunovich sp. nov., Hellinsia anikini Ustjuzhanin & Kovtunovich sp. nov. and Hellinsia nawrothi Ustjuzhanin & Kovtunovich sp. nov. Twelve species are recorded as new to the fauna of Uganda.
