Changes in Physicochemical Properties of Coal and Their Mechanism Due to Supercritical CO2–H2O Treatment

The dissolution of supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO2) in water forms a ScCO2–H2O system, which exerts a transformative influence on the physicochemical characteristics of coal and significantly impacts the CO2-driven enhanced coalbed methane (CO2-ECBM) recovery process. Herein, the effect of ScCO2–H2O treatment on the physicochemical properties of coal was simulated in a high-pressure reactor. The migration of major elements, change in the pore structure, and change in the CH4 adsorption capacity of coal after the ScCO2–H2O treatment were detected using plasma emission spectroscopy, the low-temperature liquid nitrogen adsorption method, and the CH4 adsorption method, respectively. The results show that (1) the ScCO2–H2O treatment led to mineral reactions causing a significant migration of constant elements in the coal. The migration of Ca ions was the most significant, with an increase in their concentration in treated water from 0 to 16–970 mg·L−1, followed by Na, Mg, and K. Al migrated the least, from 0 to 0.004–2.555 mg·L−1. (2) The ScCO2–H2O treatment increased the pore volume and pore-specific surface area (SSA) of the coal via the dissolution and precipitation of minerals in the coal pores. The total pore volume increased from 0.000795–0.011543 to 0.001274–0.014644 cm3·g−1, and the total pore SSA increased from 0.084–3.332 to 0.400–6.061 m2·g−1. (3) Changes in the CH4 adsorption capacity were affected by the combined effects of a mineral reaction and pore structure change. The dissolved precipitates of the minerals in the coal pores after the ScCO2–H2O treatment caused elemental migration, which not only decreased the mineral content in the coal pores but also increased the total pore volume and total pore SSA, thus improving the CH4 adsorption capacity of the coal. This study provides theoretical support for CO2 sequestration and ECBM recovery.

Quantitative characterization of water transport and wetting patterns in coal using LF-NMR and FTIR techniques

Water injection in coal seams is an effective technique for preventing and controlling dust disasters in coal mines. However, there is a lack of quantitative evaluation of water transport in coal and its wetting effect. In this paper, the wetting experiments of coal samples with different coal rank and particle size at a given water volume were characterized using low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) tests. Additionally, the physicochemical properties of coal were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and low temperature N2 adsorption (LTNA) experiments, establishing quantitative relationships between these properties and contact angle, T2-weighted average value (T2g), and peak area of adsorbed water (ATotal). The relationships reveal the dynamic transport process of water in coal samples and its wettability law. The results show that the relaxation time of free state water in porous media decreases with stronger wetting of coal samples, resulting in a faster relaxation rate of free state water and a leftward shift of corresponding peaks. In the range of coal particle sizes from 0.18 to 2 mm (10–80 mesh), the wettability of coal deteriorates with the increasing degree of deterioration of coal samples, with larger particles of lower rank coal samples exhibiting better wettability. The better the wettability of the coal, the shorter the relaxation time of the corresponding peaks, the larger the total area of the adsorption peaks, and the smaller the T2g,24h values. The FTIR structural parameters of hydroxyl (–OH) and carboxyl (–COOH) groups have the greatest influence on the hydrophilicity of the coal. Correlations of factors affecting the wettability of the coal body were analyzed, and three equations for quantitative characterization of the wettability of the coal body were constructed. Overall, the low-field NMR method presented in this paper provides an efficient means of quantitatively characterizing coal wettability and revealing the macro and microscopic mechanisms underlying the interaction between coal and water, as well as the associated wettability patterns.

Experimental Study on the Properties of Gas Diffusion in Various Rank Coals under Positive Pressure.

A kind of closed mining and nonventilation working face is proposed, which provides a possibility for eliminating coal mine accidents and extracting high-purity gas. During mining, a confined space above normal pressure is formed in the face. Geological conditions cause significant differences in the physicochemical properties of coal and affect the occurrence and migration of gas in coal seams. The pore structures of five coal samples were obtained by mercury injection and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption. The self-made positive pressure desorption experimental device was used to conduct isothermal desorption experiments under different environmental pressures. An extended Langmuir model was proposed to carry out regression analysis on the curve of positive pressure desorption with time. The effect of coal pore structure on gas diffusion properties was discussed. The results indicate that the development degree of micropores in coal determines the amount of gas adsorption. With the increase of coal rank, both the ultimate desorption quantity and desorption rate first decrease and then increase. The positive pressure enhances the concentration of methane outside the coal and inhibits methane diffusion. With an increase of positive pressure, the desorption capacity of the high-rank ZG was significantly inhibited, and the desorption limit and initial desorption rate decreased by 15.80-44.54 and 16.92-47.93%, respectively. The diffusion coefficient of the middle-rank XS has the greatest decrease rate of 1.56-18.05%. The pore structure of coal is the essential reason that affects methane diffusion.

Synergistic Mechanism of Ultrasonic-Chemical Effects on the CH4 Adsorption-Desorption and Physicochemical Properties of Jincheng Anthracite.

Ultrasonic is a new method to enhance coalbed methane recovery. A deeper comprehension of the synergistic mechanisms of combined ultrasonic-chemical modification on the CH4 adsorption-desorption capability and physicochemical properties of coal is necessary for potential field implementation, as the modification of coal reservoirs frequently necessitates the addition of chemical reagents. This paper evaluated the CH4 adsorption-desorption properties of anthracite modified by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution, ultrasonic modification, and combined ultrasonic-SDS modification. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, and micro-CT were applied to elucidate the synergistic mechanism of the combined modification. The research results show that the SDS solution reduces the saturated adsorption capacity of anthracite and increases its final desorption rate by dissolving clay minerals and the physical adsorption masking effect of SDS micelles on the coal surface. Some surface groups with low bond energy are broken or evaporated under mechanical vibration and thermal effects generated by ultrasonic. The original fractures are expanded and connected, which changes the adsorption-desorption properties of anthracite. The synergistic effect of the combined modification of ultrasonic-SDS can promote the penetration range and chemical reaction efficiency of the SDS solution, which expands the effective range of ultrasonic. After combined modification, the amount of aromatics, oxygen-containing functional groups, and aliphatic hydrocarbons on the surface of coal is reduced. The connected porosity of coal samples accounts for 91.5% of the total porosity. As a result, the saturated adsorption capacity of anthracite reduces by 26.7%, and the final desorption rate increases by 28.0%. The effect of the combined ultrasonic-chemical modification is better than that of a single modification.

Experimental simulations of methane-oriented underground coal gasification using hydrogen - The effect of coal rank and gasification pressure on the hydrogasification process

This paper presents a series of surface experimental simulations of methane-oriented underground coal gasification using hydrogen as gasification medium. The main aim of the experiments conducted was to evaluate the feasibility of methane-rich gas production through the in situ coal hydrogasification process. Two multi-day trials were carried out using large scale gasification facilities designed for ex situ experimental simulations of the underground coal gasification (UCG) process. Two different coals were investigated: the “Six Feet” semi-anthracite (Wales) and the “Wesoła" hard coal (Poland). The coal samples were extracted directly from the respective coal seams in the form of large blocks. The gasification tests were conducted in the artificial coal seams (0.41 × 0.41 × 3.05 m) under two distinct pressure regimes - 20 and 40 bar. The series of experiments conducted demonstrated that the physicochemical properties of coal (coal rank) considerably affect the hydrogasification process. For both gasification pressures applied, gas from “Six Feet” semi-anthracite was characterized by a higher content of methane. The average CH4 concentration for “Six Feet” experiment during the H2 stage was 24.12% at 20 bar and 27.03% at 40 bar. During the hydrogasification of “Wesoła" coal, CH4 concentration was 19.28% and 21.71% at 20 and 40 bar, respectively. The process was characterized by high stability and reproducibility of conditions favorable for methane formation in the whole sequence of gasification cycles. Although the feasibility of methane-rich gas production by underground hydrogasification was initially demonstrated, further techno-economic studies are necessary to assess the economic feasibility of methane production using this process.

Interactions of dynamic supercritical CO2 fluid with different rank moisture-equilibrated coals: Implications for CO2 sequestration in coal seams

The interactions between CO2 and coals during CO2-ECBM (CO2 sequestration in deep coal seams with enhanced coal-bed methane recovery) could change pore morphology and chemistry property of coals, thereby affecting adsorption, diffusion and flow capability of CO2 and CH4 within coal reservoirs. To simulate CO2-ECBM process more practically, the dynamic interactions of supercritical CO2 (scCO2) and moisture-equilibrated coals were performed at temperature of 318.15 K, pressure of 12.00 MPa, and duration of 12.00 h. The impacts of the interactions on physicochemical properties of coals were investigated. Results indicate that scCO2/H2O exposure shows minor effect on micropores of coals. However, the exposure significantly decreases the mesopore surface area of bituminous coals, while increases that of anthracites. The mesopore volume and the average mesopore diameter of all the coals after scCO2/H2O exposure decrease. The multi-fractal analysis verifies that the scCO2 exposure can enhance the pore connectivity of various rank coals. Apart from the pore morphology, the exposure of scCO2/H2O also affects the oxygenic functional groups on coal surface. Particularly, the exposure of scCO2/H2O reduces the content of CO and CO of coals. The content of COOH of low rank coals including Hehua-M2# coal, Zhongqiang-4# coal, Buliangou-9# coal and Tashan-5# coal decreases, while the high rank Laochang-11# coal and Kaiyuan-9# coal witness a growth in COOH. The content of total oxygenic functional groups of all coals after interaction with scCO2/H2O decreases; on the contrary, that of CC/CH of all coals after scCO2/H2O exposure increases. In summary, the interaction with scCO2/H2O significantly changes the pore system and oxygenic functional groups of various rank coals, which needs further attention regarding CO2-ECBM.

Microbial communities from the Huaibei Coalfield alter the physicochemical properties of coal in methanogenic bioconversion

The relationships among the production of methane, the physicochemical properties of coal, and the composition of microbial communities are poorly understood in methanogenic bioconversion. In this study, we investigated the changes in microbial communities during the methanogenic process of coal based on culture-dependent methods as well as the physicochemical properties of the coal samples. The process of methane production could be clearly divided into four phases (lag, log, peak, and stationary phases). The initial bacterial communities in the cultivation were predominantly Bacteroidales, Actionmycetales, and Bacillales; the archaeal community was present at values below the detection limit. However, distinct changes in bacterial communities were noted at the log phase of methane production. Bacteroides species accounted for >80% of the total bacterial community, and acetotrophic Methanosarcina was the only archaeal community. Interestingly, Clostridiales increased considerably during the first 2 weeks, but decreased thereafter, indicating that Clostridiales may play a unique role during the initial stage of methanogenic coal bioconversion. Furthermore, the final coal sample showed decreased C and O contents and increased N and H contents. Volatile and ash contents as well as microporosity were also higher than those in the initial state. These results suggested that methanogenic coal bioconversion was a complex biochemical process and that the physicochemical properties of coal were altered in methanogenic bioconversion. Moreover, these findings may facilitate the development of strategies to improve the production of biomethane utilizing coal.

Electrical Resistivity of Coal and Oil Shales

The physicochemical properties of coal and oil shales are compared: specifically, the ash content, moisture content, porosity, and yield of volatiles. The electrical resistivity of the oil shales, lignite, and coal is compared, as a function of the temperature. On account of their large content of volatiles, lignite and oil shales are characterized by similar electrical resistivity.

For the thorough research on coal metamorphism impact on gas adsorption capacity, this paper collected and summarized parameters of experimental adsorption isotherms, coal maceral, proximate analysis and ultimate analysis obtained from National Engineering Research Center of Coal Gas Control and related literatures at home and abroad, systematically discussed the coal rank effect on its physicochemical properties and methane adsorption capacity, in which the coal rank was shown in Vitrinite reflectance, furthermore, obtained the Semi-quantitative relationship between physicochemical properties of coal and methane adsorption capacity.

Effect of magma intrusion on the occurrence of coal gas in the Wolonghu coalfield

Chemical analysis, methane isothermal adsorption studies, and mercury porosimetry were performed on ten samples taken from the magma intrusion boundary in the Wolonghu coalfield. The physico-chemical properties of coals from the magma intrusion region are compared to those from the normal regions. The results show that the volatile content ( V ad), the limiting adsorption constant ( a), and the initial methane diffusion rate of samples from the magma intrusion region are generally smaller than those values from samples from the normal region. The number three coal sample from the magma intrusion region has a large vitrinite reflectance, well developed macropores, a small surface area, and weak methane adsorption capacity. The number ten coal sample from the normal region has a small vitrinite reflectance, well developed micropores, a large surface area, and a strong methane adsorption capacity. The maceral of the coal samples from the magma intrusion region and the normal region are similar. The coal in the area near the magma intrusion boundary is rich in methane and is an area where coal and gas outbursts often occur.

Mechanical Properties of Reconstituted Australian Black Coal

Coal is usually highly heterogeneous. Great variation in properties can exist among samples obtained even at close proximity within the same seam or within the same core sample. This makes it difficult to establish a correlation between uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and point load index for coal. To overcome this problem, a method for making reconstituted samples for laboratory tests was developed. Samples were made by compacting particles of crushed coal mixed with cement and water. These samples were allowed to cure for four days. UCS and point load tests were performed to measure the geomechanical properties of the reconstituted coal. After four days curing, the average UCS was found to be approximately 4MPa. This technical note outlines some experimental results and correlations that were developed to predict the mechanical properties of the reconstituted black coal samples. By reconstituting the samples from crushed coal, it is hoped that the samples will retain the important mechanical and physicochemical properties of coal, including the swelling, fluid transport, and gas sorption properties of coal. The aim is to be able to produce samples that are homogeneous with properties that are highly reproducible, and the reconstituted coal samples can be used for a number of research areas related to coal, including the long-term safe storage of CO2 in coal seams.

Petrographic and physicochemical properties of coal in seam 510 in the northern and central parts of the Upper Silesion Coal Basin

Using density-gradient centrifugation, within-sample heterogeneity in C/N, δ13C, and δ15N was determined for a sample of the Blue Gem coal bed (Middle Pennsylvanian, Duckmantian (Westphalian B), Breathitt Formation) and related to maceral (petrographically identifiable organic component) composition. Relatively pure macerals were separated by density, with purities up to 99% in the case of vitrinite in fractions around 1.3 g/mL. Lower density fractions (∼ 1.2 g/mL) contain predominantly liptinite (∼ 75%) but also significant amounts of vitrinite (∼ 20%). Denser fractions contain increasing amounts of inertinite, with several fractions between 1.37 and 1.44 g/mL containing > 98% total inertinite. Within these denser fractions, semifusinite concentrated at lower densities than did fusinite. The separation of macerals by density allowed a more detailed evaluation of the isotopic composition of relatively pure macerals within a single coal. δ13C becomes increasingly heavy across the density gradient, with δ13C values being lightest in the liptinites, followed by vitrinite, and then semifusinite and fusinite; by contrast, δ15N becomes lighter across the same density range. C/H increases with density, reflecting a general decrease in aliphatic components and increase in aromatic components. C/N follows a similar pattern, ranging from < 40 to over 100, increasing significantly at densities > 1.32, the point at which inertinite macerals begin to predominate over vitrinite.The isotopic composition of macerals reflects chemical composition, which in turn reflects: 1) the original composition of plant tissues from which the macerals originated; 2) early diagenetic changes; and 3) changes during coalification. Macerals derived from lipid-rich precursor materials (liptinites) have more depleted δ13C values (∼ 2‰) relative to those derived from woody tissues (vitrinite). Fusinized material, derived from fossil charcoal, has δ13C values enriched by ∼ 0.5‰ compared with the vitrinite, consistent with the results from combustion experiments using modern plant tissues. Vitrinite fractions have enriched δ15N values relative to inertinite fractions, which may reflect early diagenetic changes in woody tissues involving preferential loss of 14N, possibly due to bacterial activity during the peat-forming stage. Due to the within-sample variability in carbon isotopic composition reported here, it is suggested that chemostratigraphic studies based on Type III kerogen (including both dispersed organic matter and coals) carefully consider the associated effects of variability in maceral composition.

Effect of cleavage of ether linkages on physicochemical properties of coals

Coals of different rank were treated with naphthalene anion in tetrahydrofuran. It was found that, as in the case of coal of 87.8% C (daf), large amounts of unreactive oxygen bonds, possibly of the ether type, were cleaved. Cleavage of these ether linkages led to a lowering of the melting point and, in some types of coals, to a large increase in dilatation and a substantial increase in Gieseler fluidity.

Preliminary degassing of burst-prone coal seams by means of large-diameter boreholes

Calculation of preliminary degassing systems of unrelieved burst-prone coal seams by rational equations enables us to solve such problems by studying the strength and physicochemical properties of coal and sometimes permits use of available data on the strength characteristics, gas permeability, sorption characteristics, and porosity of burst-prone coals.
