Study of the dynamics of photoprocesses in organic compounds and development of new active media and dye lasers

This is a review of the work done in the spectroscopy and photonics of polyatomic molecules at the Siberian Physicotechnical Institute during the year 1991. The methodology for theoretical prognostication of spectral luminescent and formation properties of organic compound molecules is discussed. The possibility of using quantum chemistry methods to investigate ultrafast photophysical and photochemical processes in polyatomic molecules is considered. Results obtained in creating new active media for dye lasers with long work life are presented, and the technical specifications of the powerful narrow band “MJL-03” dye laser are given.

Letters from Kapitza to his mother, 1921-27

Peter Kapitza (1894—1984) came to England as a member of a Soviet mission sent to renew scientific relations with the West after the upheavals of World War I, the Revolution and the Civil War. He had recently suffered the tragic loss of his wife, their two young children and his father in the epidemics that raged in the Soviet Union at that time. It was partly to distract him from his grief that he was invited to join the mission, and A. F. Joffé, who had been his chief at the Physico-Technical Institute in Petrograd, thought it would be a good thing for him to get some first-hand experience of the latest research techniques by spending the winter in a leading physics laboratory in the West. Eventually, Rutherford agreed to have him in the Cavendish and Kapitza made such an impression by his originality and experimental skill that he was encouraged to extend his stay.

The cyclotron of the A. F. loffe Physico-Technical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (on the fortieth anniversary of its startup)

The article describes the planning and construction of the Physico-Technical Institute cyclotron, the fortieth anniversary of the startup of which was observed in 1986. A review of the principal results of the work of the cyclotron laboratory is given: the production of microquantities of plutonium, the measurement of neutron cross sections, and the results of systematic investigations of the Coulomb excitation of nuclear levels by means of ions accelerated in the cyclotron (from He to Ar) and investigations of highly excited and high-spin states of nuclei with A < 100. Special attention is given to applied studies carried out using the cyclotron—the production of semiconductor devices by means of implantation and the development of new methods of study of the composition of surface layers of solids.

A technique of measuring the angular intensity distributions of the radiation of relativistic electrons scattered in single crystals

An experimental system for measuring the angular distribution of x radiation intensity from relativistic electrons scattered in single crystals and for identifying the emission mechanisms was built and installed on the linear 40 MeV electron LU-40 accelerator of the Kharkov Physicotechnical Institute. The system consists of a remote-control goniometer, equipment for developing and monitoring the electron beam parameters on the crystal targets, radiation extraction channels, and a set for recording the images of the radiation pattern on a base of coordinate-sensitive detectors. The operation of the system is described along with the image processing and display method and hardware. An image-difference technique was used to record angular distributions of the emission intensity. The technique was tested with a radiation flux generated by 24 MeV electrons interacting with 70-micrometer thick silicon crystals.

Growth and properties of shaped crystals

The paper summarizes the results of some shaped crystal growth research being carried out at the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in Leningrad and at some other institutions in the USSR, which were presented at the Stepanov Conference in Leningrad in 1985. The properties of shaped crystals and new versions of the Stepanov method are discussed.

Tokamak experiments at the A.F. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute

The paper presents a brief survey of experiments on high-frequency plasma heating in the FT-1 and FT-2 tokamaks and of experiments in tokamaks with plasma compression: Tuman-2, Tuman-2A and Tuman-3.
