Providing access to historical SEC filings: Comparing Mergent Archives and physical microfiche collections

Company filings are essential for business research. While current filings are readily accessible, historical filings pose a challenge. Traditionally, researchers used physical archives, but digital collections are becoming available. We evaluated coverage and readability of the Security Exchange Commission (SEC) Historical Filings collection in Mergent Archives by comparing it to a large academic library microfiche collection. The digital Mergent Archives collection had high coverage for Annual Financial Reports, but we found gaps in certain years and filing types that could impede business researchers. Our findings provide insight into alternatives to physical SEC filing collections and a framework for comparing microfiche and digital collections.

Designing an Chatbot with NLP Technology in a Website-Based New Student Admission Information System

In the fast pace of digitalization, student admission information system websites face the challenge of providing responsive and quality services to applicants. One emerging solution is the use of chatbots, which enable automated interaction with customers. Technology continues to transform over time. At SMK Insan Teknologi (InTek), the service process is still manual, such as physical archives for student registration, incomplete information, and the absence of an official website. To improve administration and data access, a web-based information system is offered. While the Chatbot helps in interactive services and time efficiency to answer registrants' questions, NLP is used to make the conversation in the chat more natural and easy to understand by registrants. The results of testing the system show that the system functions properly in responding to messages sent through the chatbot on the website both from the message text according to the intent, as well as abstract text and not according to the pattern with an accuracy rate of 87,5%. It is hoped that this research can improve the quality of service and administrative efficiency at SMK Insan Teknologi and can be applied in other educational institutions.

DAMPAK PENERAPAN DIGITALISASI ARSIP DI DESA CIBOGO KEC.CIBOGO, KAB.SUBANG TERHADAP KEGIATAN PELAYANAN MASYARAKAT

The ever-increasing development of digitalization has made village governments begin to apply it in the process of providing services to the community and in the process helps facilitate the work carried out by employees, thereby making the service process fast and easy. Digital archives are used to simplify the process of searching for archives that have been created and reduce physical archives that require space for storage. By using observation and interview research methods as well as system development methods using waterfall, the results obtained from this research are that the digital archive system can run well and can be used by users. If a digital archive system is compared with conventional archives, the result is that digital archives can improve service quality, making it easier for employees to manage archives. Digital archives can reduce paper use by 50 percent, thereby reducing environmental impacts caused by paper use, such as cutting down trees and pollution from the use of chemicals

Perancangan Manajemen Proyek Sistem Informasi Pengarsipan Surat Berbasis Website di Desa Katapang

As the volume of data generated by various entities continues to grow, the challenges in managing and searching for data become increasingly complex, including in document and letter management within organizations. Desa Katapang, located in Katapang District, Bandung Regency, faces challenges in managing administrative letters and documents manually, which increases the risk of data loss and inaccuracies. To address this issue, a web-based letter archiving information system was developed to enhance efficiency, productivity, and document management security. This system enables digital storage, reducing the dependency on physical archives, and allows for fast and accurate document retrieval. In developing this system, the waterfall methodology was employed, covering stages such as needs analysis, system design, implementation, and testing. Additionally, project management was applied through the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Critical Path Method (CPM), and Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) approaches to ensure the project is completed on time and within budget. The results of the study show that this project is feasible to implement, with an ROI (Return on Investment) of 1.4 and an IRR (Internal Rate of Return) of 41%. With this system, Desa Katapang can improve services to the community, optimize document management processes, and reduce the risks associated with manual archiving.

The Influence of Archives Management on the Quality of Elementary School Services in Entikong Village

This research is motivated by the increasingly advanced technological era where there is more and more use of technology in terms of archiving, this has an impact on the lack of use of physical archives, based on this the researcher aims to describe the influence of archives management on service quality at elementary school especially on entikong village. This research uses a quantitative approach with the type of research used in this research is causal associative research. The sampling technique is a saturated sample, namely a sample size of 30 respondents. Data collection techniques use questionnaires and test the validity of the data using validity tests and reliability tests. The analysis prerequisite tests use the normality test, multicollinearity test and heteroscedasticity test. Hypothesis testing uses a simple regression test, namely the t test and multiple linear regression testing using the F test. The results of this research show that there is a significant influence between archiving administration on service quality with tcount>ttable with a determinant coefficient of 0.374. So it can be concluded that archives administration has a 37.4% influence on service quality, so overall it can be concluded that archives management has a significant influence on service quality at elementary school. With this research, it is hoped that all levels of teacher personnel and school principals can implement better archiving management in order to improve service quality.

Fanbinding, Preservation, and Local Archives: Un-Digitizing Trends and Media Ownership in Fandom Information Practices

Fanbinding, or the practice of printing fanworks into books, creates a physical format of primarily digital content. My previous research found that a common motivation for fanbinders to participate in this craft was preservation of their personal access to beloved fanworks, which echoes broader trends of controlling media through local physical archives. This implies an understanding of the ephemeral nature of digital content and a subsequent fear of losing access to their favorite content without their intervention. Fanbinding creates a physical copy of a fanwork that cannot disappear due to platform/author takedowns or server failures, thereby establishing the fanbinders’ ownership of that story. This article discusses the results of a short survey circulated to fanbinders on the topics of preservation and media ownership in relation to fanbinding practices to establish links between fandom practices and broader trends in media ownership and physical media collection-building.

Visiting Contested Terrain: Archiving, Auditing, and Reforming Commemorative Place Names on US Marine Corps Bases

In recent years, commemorative naming has been discussed and called into question in the U.S. military, and with the establishment of the Confederate Naming Commission by Congress in 2021, representatives for branches of the US military and Department of Defense were tasked with evaluating commemorative practices associated with valorizing Confederate history. In this paper, we focus specifically on place naming patterns on US Marine Corps bases through an engagement with military archives. These archives are part of a hegemonic control of memory that sits uncomfortably at the intersection of the racialized history of the Armed Forces and its growing reliance on a multi-cultural America. We argue and find early evidence that the archives constitute contested terrain and the commemorative audits conducted by military institutions are a potentially fraught practice given possible self-interest and potential lack of a critical perspective on the past and place. We encountered many of the difficulties that complicate name reform and the commemorative audits, such as negotiated access to the physical archives and data, inconsistent practices and documentation which contributed to an incomplete audit, and conflicts with institutional interest. Even with the Confederate Naming Commission’s recent reports and recommendations for renaming some military bases and structures, there remains a demand for greater attention to the audits of commemorative place names utilized to make such recommendations. This demand necessitates a recognition that the legacy of racism and racial violence goes far beyond the years of the Confederacy, particularly regarding the landscapes of the United States military.

Redefining Archival Reference: Relationship-based Reference

ABSTRACT This article argues that archival access systems require a new archival ecosystem (physical infrastructure, access tools, e.g., catalogs, findings aids, indexes, rules policies procedures, and institutional supports) and a broader conceptual framing. Based on the findings from sixteen interviews with archivists, this article proposes a multifaceted, relationship-based access framework. The framework focuses on supporting users studying difficult histories or members of oppressed communities in a physical archives but also highlights elements that all users might appreciate.

Grassroots Archives

Abstract In recent years, coalitions of activists, artists, scholars, and community members have created archives composed of material related to social movements past and present with increasing frequency. These grassroots archives raise questions about the potential role of archives as generative spaces for democratizing history. This article explores this potential and the attendant challenges through a case study on an effort to preserve the memory of activism in São Paulo’s urban peripheries during Brazil’s civil-military dictatorship (1964–85)—an effort in which the author took part amid the rise of the far-right president and former dictatorship supporter Jair Bolsonaro. The postdictatorship culture of censorship and an ever-changing city relentlessly militated against the permanence of memory, not least through the destruction of physical archives and reference points in the urban landscape. The effort to organize and digitize precarious materials unfolded amid a larger campaign by activists to create an archive as part of a new university in the periphery. In this article, the author reflects on his experience working with communities through grassroots archiving to preserve at-risk historical sources, enhance local capacity, and broaden the practice of history beyond the academy.

Archival Research in Sport Management: A Review for Research Methods Courses

The present study aimed to explain archival research and demonstrate its relevance as a distinct research method to include in sport management research methods course instruction. The current essay implicitly shows how archival research can complement other research methods and possibly improve upon their limitations. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that training in archival research can offer skills to students who might pursue employment in the sport industry. The review outlines what archival research is. Next, the various limitations and considerations to aid course instructors and subsequently researcher or practitioner comprehension are provided. Finally, the paper offers a guide for approaching physical archives and outlines expectations for archival research. Techniques necessary for analyzing information gleaned from archival research are presented and explained along with sample course assignments that are available to not only research methods classes but also potentially other coursework.

Re-animating the archive: encountering and transforming historical materials with digital design tools

Once documents exist outside physical archives in high-resolution digital forms, researcher-artists may interact with them in previously impossible or forbidden ways – spinning them around in three dimensions, zooming in to their tiniest details, or tearing them apart. Commonly used by visual and spatial designers, digital 3D modeling, animation, and image-editing tools make possible affective and intimate encounters with historical documents. Through these encounters, researcher-artists may uncover insights about the events, environments, and ways of understanding the built and natural worlds that those documents represent.

Electronic Archive as a Means of Quick Access to Management Information

The purpose of the article is to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the document flow of the city council and to develop models that will highlight the internal processes of electronic document flow after its implementation in the institution. The research methodology consists of the study of scientific works that highlight the methods of electronic archives and the storage of electronic documents in them, the analysis of the state of the city council in the implementation of information technologies in the work process of the institution and the selection of the necessary software, studying the economic possibilities of the institution and the prospects of using their electronic products in the field of document management. The scientific novelty consists in expanding the understanding of the need to modernize the document flow in state institutions of Ukraine, in particular in the city council, by analyzing the prospects of such innovations, detailing the internal processes of the electronic archive, and choosing a technological solution to the set goals. Conclusions. The transfer of state institutions to electronic archives will make it possible to speed up the processes of document circulation and save on the provision of physical archives. The implementation of online solutions for document management is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon because Ukraine is digitizing at a rapid pace, but problematic sectors remain, such as institutions in small towns and villages. The process of implementing electronic archives based on professional systems costs a lot of money, however, if the community does not have the necessary funds, it can be implemented completely free of charge with the help of Google Sheets. The system of electronic archives will allow institutions to work not only more efficiently, but also more safely because in times of war, there are always risks for employees, so if necessary, access to the system will be from any place where there is access to the Internet. Penerapan Sistem Manajemen Rekam Web pada DPMPTSP Kota Samarinda dengan Menggunakan Framework Laravel

The management of physical archives into digital formats is a crucial aspect in enhancing the operational efficiency of government agencies, particularly the DPMPTSP of Samarinda City. This research proposes and implements a web-based record management system using the Laravel framework to facilitate this process. The primary focus is to simplify employees' tasks in transforming and managing archives digitally, reducing dependence on physical archiving that often consumes time and resources. Laravel framework is chosen for its reliability in web development and ease of integration with other technologies.The implementation of this system not only transforms how employees store archives but also streamlines the file borrowing process. The system allows employees to easily search for and borrow archives electronically, overcoming traditional barriers in information retrieval. The implementation results show a significant improvement in archive management efficiency, creating an innovative and relevant solution to administrative challenges in government agencies. The success of this implementation creates opportunities to further modernize public administration processes, making technology utilization a key factor in improving productivity and service quality. Thus, this research makes a positive contribution to the transformation of public administration through technology implementation, paving the way for more effective and integrated archive management.

Power in University Archives: Imperialism and Disparities in Nigeria and the United States

This article examines the structural disparities between the archives at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) and Michigan State University (MSU). While Nigerian archivists work to preserve their institutions’ local content, they must contend with cultural and infrastructural constraints foreign to their American counterparts. To elucidate these differences, this analysis builds upon Stoler’s ‘archival turn’ framework which shifts the gaze on archives to consider them as subjects of inquiry rather than mere sources of data. Reflecting on my own experience working with physical archives at UNN and MSU, along with digital artifacts from these institutions’ websites, I analyze the contents and accessibility of hardcopy and digital collections at both universities. In conclusion, I argue that the ongoing and uneven footprint of imperialism, both socio-cultural and infrastructural, results in an unequal distribution of Trouillot's ‘archival power’ amongst global institutions like UNN and MSU. Additionally, I highlight means by which some Nigerian scholars have contested imperialism to reclaim ownership over their own archival contents and narratives.

Pelatihan Digitalisasi Sistem Informasi Manajemen Pelayanan Geraja Di Wilayah GMIT Klasis Kota Kupang Timur

Management information systems in church services are also a necessity. One of the organizations that need information technology to support ministry is the church, in this case the churches that are in the GMIT Kalasis service area, East Kupang City. Each of the churches that are in the service of the Klass terrorist in East Kupang City has various information such as church profiles, assembly and congregation data, worship schedules, church financial information, articles and other information. Service information at the church is still not optimal because it is only limited to news from church pulpits and social media. The church service management information system which is still manual, namely by using Microsoft Office and the number of documents stored in the form of physical archives or printed documents such as church member registration documents, mourning, baptism, and marriage still uses data collection forms. System like this is less effective because it can make it difficult for church staff in archiving or searching data and is less efficient because it requires quite large operational costs in each year's service budget. Through this activity the results achieved were providing education so that the church could utilize a website-based management information system that can be installed on Android for the church to have as an effective means of information to support church services to congregations and design a management information system needed by the church in support of church ministry.

‘715 haven street: art looks back’: the archival question of art resistance for abolitionist futures in a pacified present

ABSTRACT In this article, I bring together the archive of institutional activism of Niara Sudarkasa in the U.S. and the posthumous impact of activist and public administrator Marielle Franco. The 1970s historical sources show Sudarkasa’s institutional solidarity with students and faculty in the creation of one of the first Africana Studies departments in the U.S. Reading them, I articulate an ethos for the curation ‘715 Haven Street: Art Looks Back,’ a public digital art gallery comprised of art and history found in the DAAS Papers (Department of Afroamerican and African Studies) housed in the Bentley Library’s digital and physical archives. The analysis of the primary sources is guided by an engagement with the ‘Marielle Effect,’ generating a historical parameter for Abolitionist solidarity between American, Brazilian, Latin American, African American, Diasporic, and ally scholarly communities. The discussion of these parameters is embedded in my discussion of the concept of pacification, a phenomenon of colonial and post-colonial policing that survives through the perpetuation of an extra-judicial policing impetus articulated along race, identity, legality, and sexual legitimacy of subjects.

Moreover, building a solid team with subject knowledge is also a strategy that future university archives need to introduce in terms of innovation.

Smart Archive Management: Application of IoT, BD and GIS to Infrastructure ArchivesManagement

In the management of infrastructure archives, there are three problems that need to be solved: the lack of smart infrastructure archives management paradigm with systematic and standardization, the fact that 2-dimensional paper-based infrastructure archives cannot accurately describe three-dimensional infrastructure archive information, and the problem of "information gap" caused by the lack of integration of infrastructure spatial information and archives. This paper proposed a new paradigm of smart infrastructure archive management. The Smart Infrastructure Archive Management Paradigm takes realizes the perception of infrastructure archive resources by combining the Internet of things technology, cloud computing and big data technology, as well as geographic information system. This paper proposes the Physical Archives Management Platform, the Archives Smart Repository Management Platform, the Infrastructure Archives Visual Management Platform. The research outputs have been applied to the Archives Management of Zhengzhou University and achieved good feedback.

Creating and Engaging a Sexuality and Gender Digital Collection

As a queer early career librarian, coming into the digital collections space at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) and not being able to see a very important part of myself reflected within the digital collection spurred me to think about ways in which I could make people like me more visible within it. Thus, for one of my early projects as the new Digital Scholarship Librarian at GVSU, I digitized the event archives from the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies department, the Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center, and the Gayle R. Davis Center for Women and Gender Equity. With this material I planned to create a sexuality and gender digital collection, with multiple objectives: to include a queer perspective within the digital collections, to raise awareness of what these physical places offer students within the digital space, and to allow easier access to the archives with the hopes of attracting people who may not have been looking specifically at what physical archives have to offer. I want the digital to break through to the physical and encourage people to go to the events and classes offered by the centers and the department. I also want to encourage students as well as people outside of academia to develop an interest working with archives in different ways. There is a need for more varied voices within the library profession as a whole, and increasing access to archival material can create interest for more LGBTQ+ people to professionally work in libraries. This project is one way I hope to spark interest in future librarians and archivists. The poster will outline the overall process this project took, and highlight the challenges and the lessons learned. Attendees will walk away with tools to start their own conversations and create digital collections alongside different departments, learn the benefits and drawbacks of working with different departments in an archival project which makes underrepresented communities more visible, and take a closer look at how a digital collection is made at Grand Valley State University.

Legal protection on women as the victim of sexual violence is provided to look after the victim in which her human right was being violated, so that she could be treated with justice according to human right law. This study aisns to a nalyze legal protection effort on woman as the victim of sexual violence eithin polda metrojaya a uthority. This study uses empirical approach. It is a research method which uses empirical facts directly taken from human conducts. It can be taken verbally by interview, direct observation, as well as physical archives. This study found that the efforts given by polda metrojaya towards the victim is only limited to legal protection. The victim does not receive material or on material compensation. As polda metrojaya only has the authority to process and to follow-up report filed by the victim. During investigation, the victim experienced physical and psychological disorder, hence the inability to gave informations and details regarding the sexual violence report. Victim was also unable to recognize the perpetrator as it happened in a secluded and dark place. These conditions caused some obstacles for investigators to further process the report. As there was no other witness than the victim herself, therefore the head of female and children assistance unit (Kanit PPA) worked alongside DP3AP2KB Jakarta and UPTD PPA Polda Metro Jaya to assist and support the victim during the investigation process.
