Nanocrystallized copper phosphate endowed with photothermal conversion and photoacoustic imaging capabilities

Copper-based nanomaterials have garnered significant attention for their potential applications in photothermal (PT) conversion and photoacoustic (PA) imaging due to their unique optical properties. However, current strategies often involve complex synthesis processes and the incorporation of additional materials, which limit their practical applicability. Here, we employed a straightforward nanocrystallization method to synthesize copper phosphate nanoparticles (Cu3(PO4)2 NPs), converting free copper ions into solid-phase nano-sized particles. This approach not only simplifies the synthesis process but also enhances the optical and thermal properties of the resulting Cu3(PO4)2 NPs. The Cu3(PO4)2 NPs achieved a temperature increase of over 20∘C and a PT conversion efficiency of 10.5% under 808 nm laser irradiation. Furthermore, Cu3(PO4)2 NPs exhibited strong, concentration-dependent PA signals, which enabled effective deep tissue imaging in vivo. The enhanced properties of Cu3(PO4)2 NPs can be attributed to the nanocrystallization of the particles, which alters the local environment of copper ions and enhances d−d transitions through specific ligand field effects. These effects increase light absorption, particularly in the NIR region, by facilitating better overlap of electronic states and enabling more efficient non-radiative relaxation processes. This highlights the significance of nano-structuring in developing advanced nanomaterials with tailored functionalities for biomedical applications.

Fluid-Dynamics-Rectified Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) Preparing Graphene-Skinned Glass Fiber Fabric and Its Application in Natural Energy Harvest.

Graphene chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth directly on target using substrates presents a significant route toward graphene applications. However, the substrates are usually catalytic-inert and special-shaped; thus, large-scale, high-uniformity, and high-quality graphene growth is challenging. Herein, graphene-skinned glass fiber fabric (GGFF) was developed through graphene CVD growth on glass fiber fabric, a Widely used engineering material. A fluid dynamics rectification strategy was first proposed to synergistically regulate the distribution of carbon species in 3D space and their collisions with hierarchical-structured substrates, through which highly uniform deposition of high-quality graphene on fibers in large-scale 3D-woven fabric was realized. This strategy is universal and applicable to CVD systems using various carbon precursors. GGFF exhibits high electrical conductivity and photothermal conversion capability, based on which a natural energy harvester was first developed. It can harvest both solar and raindrop energy through solar heating and droplet-based electricity generating, presenting promising potentials to alleviate energy burdens.

Combined Chemo- and Photothermal Therapies of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Using Polydopamine/Au Hollow Nanospheres Loaded with Doxorubicin.

The chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX) is limited by its cardiotoxicity, posing challenges in its application for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study aims to explore the efficacy of polydopamine/Au nanoparticles loaded with DOX for chemotherapy and photothermal therapy in NSCLC to achieve enhanced efficacy and reduced toxicity. Hollow polydopamine (HPDA)/Au@DOX was synthesized via polydopamine chemical binding sacrificial template method. Morphology was characterized using transmission electron microscopy, particle size and potential were determined using dynamic light scattering, and photothermal conversion efficiency was assessed using near-infrared (NIR) thermal imaging. Drug loading rate and in vitro drug release were investigated. In vitro, anti-tumor experiments were conducted using CCK-8 assay, flow cytometry, and live/dead cell staining to evaluate the cytotoxicity of HPDA/Au@DOX on A549 cells. Uptake of HPDA/Au@DOX by A549 cells was detected using the intrinsic fluorescence of DOX. The in vivo anti-metastasis and anti-tumor effects of HPDA/Au@DOX were explored in mouse lung metastasis and subcutaneous tumor models, respectively. HPDA/Au@DOX with a particle size of (164.26±3.25) nm, a drug loading rate of 36.31%, and an encapsulation efficiency of 90.78% was successfully prepared. Under 808 nm laser irradiation, HPDA/Au@DOX accelerated DOX release and enhanced uptake by A549 cells. In vitro photothermal performance assessment showed excellent photothermal conversion capability and stability of HPDA/Au@DOX under NIR laser irradiation. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that the photothermal-chemotherapy combination group (HPDA/Au@DOX+NIR) exhibited stronger anti-metastatic and anti-tumor activities compared to the monotherapy group (DOX). HPDA/Au@DOX nanosystem demonstrated excellent photothermal effect, inhibiting the growth and metastasis of A549 cells. This nanosystem achieves the combined effect of chemotherapy and photothermal, making it promising for NSCLC treatment.

Construction of CXCR4 Receptor-Targeted CuFeSe2 Nano Theranostic Platform and Its Application in MR/CT Dual Model Imaging and Photothermal Therapy.

Targeting, imaging, and treating tumors represent major clinical challenges. Developing effective theranostic agents to address these issues is an urgent need. We introduce an "all-in-one" tumor-targeted theranostic platform using CuFeSe2-based composite nanoparticles (CuFeSe2@PA) for magnetic resonance (MR) and computed tomography (CT) dual model imaging-guided hyperthermia tumor ablation. Plerixafor (AMD3100) is bonded to the surface of CuFeSe2 as a targeting unit. Due to the robust interaction between AMD3100 and the overexpressed Chemokine CXC type receptor 4 (CXCR4) on the membrane of 4T1 cancer cells, CuFeSe2@PA specifically recognizes 4T1 cancer cells, enriching the tumor region. CuFeSe2@PA serves as a contrast agent for T2-weighted MR imaging (relaxivity value of 1.61 mM-1 s-1) and CT imaging. Moreover, it effectively suppresses tumor growth through photothermal therapy (PTT) owing to its high photothermal conversion capability and stability, with minimized side effects demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. CuFeSe2@PA nanoparticles show potential as dual-mode imaging contrast agents for MR and CT and provide an effective means of tumor treatment through photothermal therapy. The surface modification with Plerixafor enhances the targeting ability of the nanoparticles, performing more significant efficacy and biocompatibility in the 4T1 cancer cell model. The study demonstrates that CuFeSe2@PA is a promising multifunctional theranostic platform with clinical application potential.

Synergistic Antibacterial Effects of Selenium-Doped Gold Nanosheets with Notable Near Infrared-II Photothermal Conversion Against Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria

Non-metallic nanoparticles are increasingly acknowledged for their broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, which often face limitations due to structural instability and potential biotoxicity. To address these challenges, integrating non-metallic nanoparticles with plasmonic metal nanostructures offers a promising solution. This fusion not only enhances structural stability but also reduces the required dosage. The synergistic coupling of the inherent antibacterial properties of non-metallic nanoparticles with the plasmonic absorption and photothermal conversion capabilities of metal nanostructures significantly amplifies antibacterial efficacy. In this study, we validate this concept by presenting the successful synthesis of selenium-doped gold nanosheets (AuSe NSs) that demonstrate robust absorption in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window and exhibit efficient photothermal conversion, followed by testing their antibacterial activity. Notably, Au NSs were synthesized with high shape purity, followed by the introduction of SeO2 and ascorbic acid to facilitate Se doping. The resulting products displayed a uniform distribution of both Au and Se elements, while maintaining the NIR-II absorbance characteristic of Au nanosheets unaffected by the Se doping as evidenced by both experimental and FDTD simulation results. Subsequent assessments of the AuSe NSs demonstrated their potent synergistic antibacterial effects against multidrug-resistant bacteria at minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs), which suggests that lower dosages can be employed and benefit minimizing potential side effects and optimizing treatment efficiency. Our findings indicate a synergistic boost between the photothermal attributes originating from Au's NIR absorption and Se's inherent antibacterial properties—an aspect minimally explored in prior research and offering a novel solution to tackling antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains.

Development of biomass aerogels with aligned channels: For continuous treatment of oily wastewater and solar-powered oil evaporation

A biomass CS/CNTs@MTMS (MCCS) aerogel with both aligned channel network, superhydrophobicity, and photothermal conversion ability was prepared by a green and facile strategy of directed freeze-drying and chemical vapor deposition using chitosan (CS), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) as the building materials. Capacity to adsorb a large variety of oils and organic solvents, with an adsorption capacity of up to 34–83 g/g. After 10 cycles, the adsorption capacity of MCCS remained at 94 % of the initial capacity, providing excellent reusability. In addition, due to its unique network of aligned channels, the MCCS can continuously separate oil and water, making it a sustainable oil–water separator. More interestingly, the MCCS aerogel has excellent photothermal conversion capabilities, and it was utilized to evaporate oil collected during the oil–water separation process using solar energy. This work provides an opportunity to design novel self-cleaning photothermally driven oil–water separation biomass materials with superhydrophobicity-strong lipophilicity.

Macroscopic preparation of polylactic acid/graphene composite fiber film with efficient antibacterial and thermal properties

AbstractPhotothermal antibacterial composite membranes have a broad range of clinical applications such as wound dressing, drug delivery, and physiotherapy. However, existing photothermal antimicrobial films have limitations related to biosafety, stability, and degradability. Herein, we develop an environmentally‐friendly composite membrane with antibacterial properties, photothermal conversion capability, and facile processing. The composite membrane film is comprised of polylactic acid (PLA) with graphene (G) and is synthesized via melt co‐blending and hot pressing. We verify that graphene is uniformly dispersed in the PLA phase, and an antibacterial rate of 99.7% can be achieved by a PLA/G composite membrane with only 3.0 wt.% graphene added. Moreover, the obtained films exhibit efficient photothermal conversion, reaching thermal treatment temperatures (40–60°C) within 10 s and maintaining temperature stability for extended periods. Additionally, the composite fiber film exhibited a tensile strength of 3.5 cN/dtex and good hydrophobicity (>90° contact angle). The combination of antibacterial properties, efficient photothermal conversion, noninfiltration, high strength, hydrophobicity, and mechanical stability, along with the inherent degradability of PLA and the scalability of the synthesis process for mass production, offer broad application prospects for PLA‐based composite materials.

Ti3C2Tx@PLGA/Icaritin microspheres-modified PLGA/β-TCP scaffolds modulate Icaritin release to enhance bone regeneration through near-infrared response

Porous poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid)/β-tricalcium phosphate/Icaritin (PLGA/β-TCP/ICT, PTI) scaffold is a tissue engineering scaffold based on PLGA/β-TCP (PT) containing Icaritin, the main active ingredient of the Chinese medicine Epimedium. Due to its excellent mechanical properties and osteogenic effect, PTI scaffold has the potential to promote bone defect repair. However, the release of ICT from the scaffolds is difficult to control. In this study, we constructed Ti3C2Tx@PLGA/ICT microspheres (TIM) and evaluated their characterization as well as ICT release under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. We utilized TIM to modify the PT scaffold and performed biological experiments. First, we cultured rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells on the scaffold to assess biocompatibility and osteogenic potential under on-demand NIR irradiation. Subsequently, to evaluate the osteogenic properties of TIM-modified scaffoldin vivo, the scaffold was implanted into a femoral condyle defect model. TIM have excellent drug-loading capacity and encapsulation efficiency for ICT, and the incorporation of Ti3C2Txendows TIM with photothermal conversion capability. Under 0.90 W cm-2NIR irradiation, the temperature of TIM maintained at 42.0 ± 0.5 °C and the release of ICT was accelerated. Furthermore, while retaining its original properties, the TIM-modified scaffold was biocompatible and could promote cell proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, and biomineralizationin vitro, as well as the osteogenesis and osseointegrationin vivo, and its effect was further enhanced through the modulation of ICT release under NIR irradiation. In summary, TIM-modified scaffold has the potential to be applied in bone defects repairing.

Near-Infrared Responsive Biomimetic Titanate/TiO2-X Heterostructure: A Therapeutic Strategy for Combating Implant-Associated Infection and Enhancing Osseointegration.

Implant-associated infections and delayed osseointegration are major challenges for the clinical success of titanium implants. To enhance antibacterial effects and promote early osseointegration, we developed a synergistic photothermal (PTT)/photodynamic (PDT) therapy strategy based on near-infrared (NIR) responsive biomimetic micro/nano titanate/TiO2-X heterostructure coatings (KMNW and NaMNS) in situ constructed on the surface of titanium implants. Specifically, KMNW and NaMNS significantly enhanced photothermal conversion capabilities, achieving localized high temperatures of 48-51 °C and promoting substantial amounts of reactive oxygen species production under 808 nm irradiation. In vitro antibacterial experiments demonstrated that KMNW achieved the highest antibacterial rates against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, at 98.78 and 98.33% respectively. Moreover, by mimicking the three-dimensional fibrous network of the extracellular matrix during bone healing, both KMNW and NaMNS markedly promoted the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of osteoblasts. In vivo implantation studies further confirmed these findings, with KMNW and NaMNS exhibiting superior antibacterial performance under NIR irradiation─94.45% for KMNW and 92.66% for NaMNS. Moreover, KMNW and NaMNS also significantly promoted new bone formation and improved osseointegration in vivo. This study presents a promising PTT/PDT therapeutic strategy for dentistry and orthopedics by employing NIR-responsive biomimetic coatings to combat implant-associated infection and accelerate osseointegration.

Multifunctional hydrogel sensor with Tough, self-healing capabilities and highly sensitive for motion monitoring and wound healing

Flexible epidermal sensors based on conductive hydrogels hold great potential for wearable devices and personal medical monitoring. Integrating real-time monitoring of injury and motion activities can essentially enhance treatment outcomes by providing detailed data to guide clinical practice. However, the application of conductive hydrogel epidermal sensors in diverse remains challenging. In this study, a multifunctional PVA/AM/AAPBA/Graphene Oxide (referred to as MHPBA-GO hydrogel) was designed as an epidermal sensor for combined functions of accelerating wound healing and motion sensing. This sensor possesses excellent biocompatibility and multifunctional therapeutic properties, including flexibility, self-healing features, and tunable photothermal conversion capability. It can sensitively monitor human motion and small electrophysiological signals to diagnose related activities and diseases. The corresponding gauge factor (GF) values under 0–200% strain are 1.8 (0–90%), 2.1 (90–160%), and 8.5 (160–200%), respectively. Furthermore, using a diabetic rat mode demonstrated that the composite hydrogel sensor can be used as an efficient wound dressing to promote wound healing. This study provides a valuable reference and guidance for the development of flexible epidermal sensors with multifunctionality for personal health monitoring.

Photo-Fenton-Active MIL-88A/CNT-Based PVA Hydrogel for Solar-Driven Water Evaporation and Simultaneous Volatile Organic Compound Removal.

Solar-driven interfacial water evaporation (SIWE) has emerged as a promising avenue for cost-effective freshwater production from seawater or wastewater. However, the simultaneous evaporation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) presents a limitation for the widespread implementation of this technique. Thus, developing dual-functional evaporators capable of both desalining seawater and degrading VOCs is challenging. Herein, we fabricated an iron-based metal-organic framework MIL-88A/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel (MCH) evaporator via the conventional freezing method for solar-driven seawater desalination and simultaneous photo-Fenton VOC degradation. Because of the superior photothermal conversion capability of CNTs, reduced thermal conductivity and water evaporation enthalpy within the hydrogel, and the photo-Fenton activity of rod-shaped MIL-88A, the MCH evaporator exhibits a higher evaporation rate of 2.26 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun illumination with simultaneous VOC degradation. The higher hydrophilicity and vertical channels in the MCH evaporator enable its self-salt cleaning ability, facilitating consistent seawater desalination, even in high salt concentrations up to 10 wt %. The synergistic effects of localized heating from CNTs and hydrogen peroxide activation through reactive sites of MIL-88A allow the MCH evaporator to degrade more than 93% of the added phenol during evaporation. This work presents a sustainable and efficient approach for solar-driven seawater desalination, offering simultaneous VOC degradation.

Cellulose-reinforced foam-based phase change composites for multi-source driven energy storage and EMI shielding

To address the increasingly serious environmental pollution and energy crisis, there is an urgent need to develop multi-source-driven energy storage materials, the field of new energy sources, such as solar thermal power generation, but electromagnetic pollution has become a primary problem that needs urgent resolution. Therefore, the development of multifunctional phase change composites (CPCMs) with multi-source drive capabilities and excellent electromagnetic shielding integration is crucial. In this study, polypyrrole (PPy)-coated conductive fibers were crosslinked with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to form a three-dimensional network, which was then combined with metal foam to prepare Ni–F/PPy@CNF-PVA (PCN) dual-network carriers with high electrical conductivity by vacuum-assisted adsorption and freeze-drying methods. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was subsequently encapsulated via vacuum impregnation to get the shape-stable PEG/Ni–F/PPy@CNF-PVA (PPCN) phase change composites. The PPCN exhibited good stability and high energy storage density (melt enthalpy up to 126.18 J/g, relative enthalpy efficiency over 99 %). Benefiting from its outstanding electrical conductivity (186680 S/m for PPCN-3), light-absorbing properties, and magnetism, the PPCN also exhibits highly efficient photothermal, electrothermal, and magnetothermal conversion capabilities. The electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency reaches up to 110.37 dB within the X-band frequency range (8.2–12.4 GHz). In conclusion, PPCNs are significant for multi-source-driven energy storage and electromagnetic shielding.

Hydrogel-based 3D evaporator with cross-linked fixation by carbon dots for ultra-high and stable solar steam generation

Solar-driven water steam generation had been recognized as a promising strategy to address water scarcity in an environmentally friendly and cost-effective manner, and the development of an evaporator capable of efficient evaporation and stable long-term operation remains a huge challenge in the field. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) hydrogel-based evaporator consisting of sodium alginate (SA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and carbon dots (CDs) integrated into a melamine sponge (MS) structure was constructed, in which the CDs were firmly bonded to the SA/PVA double crosslinked network through hydrogen bonding, which improved the mechanical properties and load-bearing capacity of the evaporator. Crucially, as highly efficient light-absorbing carbon-based materials, the CDs were homogeneously dispersed in the hydrogel, significantly enhancing the photothermal conversion capability of the evaporator. The test results indicated that the evaporation rate of the 3D-CDs/SA/PVA-MS evaporator reached up to ultra-high solar steam generation rate of 4.79 kg m-2h−1 in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at 1 sun irradiation, and exhibited the relatively excellent evaporation rate (4.13 kg m-2h−1) in high saline seawater (25 wt%). This study aimed to provide a simple and reliable modification method to enhance the evaporation performance and improve the hydrogel network of SA/PVA-based hydrogel evaporator and demonstrate their potential applications in seawater desalination and purification.

Study on CaO-based materials derived from steel slag for solar-driven thermochemical energy storage

The calcium looping (CaL) technique, renowned for its exceptional ability to withstand high temperatures and remarkable heat storage capacity, perfectly complements 3rd generation concentrated solar power (CSP) plants. However, the poor cycling stability and low spectrum absorption rate of CaO obstruct system efficiency. In order to tackle these problems, we impregnated steel slag with acetic acid and doped Mn to create a novel CaO-based energy storage material. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and fixed-bed cycling of the material revealed that the material has outstanding cyclic heat storage properties. Compared to CaO, the material has an 85 % higher initial adsorption rate, 73 % higher 30-cycle energy storage density, and 9.5 times higher average light absorption. Spherical pellets were prepared for industrial applications through the extrusion-spheronization method. The energy storage density for 30 cycles was reduced by 10.26 % for the pellets compared to the powder material, but the average light absorption rate was improved. The compressive strength of the composite pellets was 8.4 times higher than the dolomite pellets. It was found that the light absorption capacity of the material increased with the number of cycles, which was attributed to the migration of Mn and Mg from the interior to the surface. Finally, the excellent photothermal conversion capability of the new composite material was verified by the photothermal conversion test. Therefore, Mn-doped CaO-based composite material derived from steel slag is promising for application in the next-generation CaL-CSP system.

Synergistic Photothermal Tumor Immunotherapy by 1-MT Based on Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 with pH-High Sensitivity.

A successful immune response against tumors depends on various cellular processes. Hence, there is an urgent need to construct a proficient nanoplatform for immunotherapy that can concurrently regulate the activities of various cells participating in the immune process. We have developed zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) formula, with good pH sensitivity, which is conducive to the release of drugs in the tumor site (acidic environment) and significantly improves immunotherapy. This is achieved through the coordinated action of different therapeutic agents, such as the photothermal agent polydopamine (PDA), the chemodrug camptothecin (CPT), and the immunomodulator 1-methyl-D-tryptophan (1-MT). In this study, we evaluated the antitumor effect of PDA/(CPT + 1-MT) @ZIF-8 (PCMZ) nanoparticles (NPs) in vitro and in vivo and investigated the molecular mechanism of PCMZ NPs in tumor suppression via photothermal-chemo-immunotherapy. MTT and Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining apoptosis test showed that PCMZ NPs could induce apoptosis of 4T1 cell, and PCMZ NPs could cause 4T1 cell necrosis under 808 nm laser irradiation. The objective is to establish a unilateral breast cancer model in mice and investigate the effect of PCMZ NPs on tumor growth and tumor suppression in tumor bearing mice. The results showed that PCMZ NPs showed good heating effect in vivo and effectively inhibited tumor growth under 808 nm laser irradiation. In addition, PCMZ NPs could induce the immunogenic death of tumor cells, promote the maturation of DCs, inhibit IDO pathway, and finally differentiate T cells into cytotoxic T cells and helper T cells, so as to effectively activate the anti-tumor immune response. The PCMZ NPs, possessing good photothermal conversion capabilities due to join of PDA, effectively overcome two main challenges in immunotherapy: insufficient stimulation of the immune response and evasion of the immune system. This provides a robust platform against invasive cancer and recurrent tumors.

Strengthening the π-conjugation of lignin by constructing its ordered supramolecular structure

The π-conjugation system of lignin makes it one kind of multifunctional biopolymer with many remarkable features such as ultraviolet-shielding properties, photothermal conversion capability, and fluorescence performance. The quest for effective strategies to strengthen the π-conjugation of lignin is significantly important to the design and production of outstanding lignin-based materials. In this work, we strengthen the π-conjugation of lignin by transforming lignin raw materials from disordered aggregates into ordered lignin colloidal spheres (LCSs) through supramolecular self-assembly. Moreover, we explore the relationship between the conjugation of lignin and its supramolecular structure by comparing the LCSs with different sizes, functional group arrangements, and compactness. Results demonstrate that the conjugation is stronger in the LCSs that have more hydrophobic groups inside and higher density. The primary strengthening mechanism of lignin conjugation is that the ordered and compact supramolecular structure results in a shorter average distance between benzene rings and stronger π-π interaction compared with that of disordered and loose supramolecular structure. We further demonstrate the great ultraviolet-shielding property and photothermal conversion capability of LCSs in polymer films, in which LCSs exhibit improved application performances than that of lignin raw materials due to their strengthened conjugation.

MXene@polydopamine/oxidized sodium alginate modified collagen composite aerogel as sustainable bio-adsorbent for heavy metal ion adsorption and solar driven water evaporation

The design of an environmentally friendly bio-adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous media is a sustainable strategy to ensure water safety. Herein, a three-dimensional macroscopic aerogel with photothermal conversion and heavy metal wastewater treatment capability was designed using leather collagen, MXene@polydopamine and oxidized sodium alginate as raw materials, named as MPAC composite aerogel. The applicability of the developed MPAC composite aerogel in water evaporation and heavy metal wastewater treatment was studied. MPAC composite aerogel had good Cr(VI) adsorption capacity. This article focused on the study of adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics. The adsorption equilibrium time of MPAC composite aerogel was 60 min, and the equilibrium adsorption capacity of MPAC composite aerogel for Cr(VI) reached 80.73, 100.80 and 112.86 mg/g when the initial Cr(VI) concentration was 30, 70 and 100 mg/L, respectively. The adsorption process of Cr(VI) by MPAC composite aerogel conformed to the two-level dynamics model and the Freundlich adsorption isotherm model, and was a spontaneous endothermic reaction. Additionally, the composite aerogel had good solar-driven water evaporation ability and could enhance the water evaporation rate of Cr(VI) solution. Furthermore, the MPAC composite aerogel had high adsorption performance for Cr(VI) under solar illumination conditions. This new aerogel has the advantages of low cost, environmental friendliness, strong adsorption capacity and photothermal conversion performance and is a promising heavy metal ion adsorbent.

Construction and photothermal properties of Ag–Pt nanoparticles modified hierarchical porous carbon film with ultra-wide infrared spectrum absorption

The rapid development and popularization of infrared detectors have expressed higher and urgent requirements for the light harvesting and photothermal conversion capability of infrared sensitive films. Herein, a hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) derived from polymer carbonization was employed as the porous framework, and then was modified with Pt and Ag particles to construct an efficient photothermal conversion film with ultra-wide infrared spectrum absorption. The light-trapping effect of special porous microstructure, introduction of enormous defects, and intrinsic strong absorption of carbon materials enables the HPC film to holds an absorbance of 72.74 % over the range of 2–20 μm, which could be further improved by about 1.3 times to 94.75 % after Pt and Ag particles (AgPt@HPC) were introduced onto the framework because of the additional plasmon effect and the establishment of complex electric field coupling mechanisms. Moreover, photothermal conversion efficiency of AgPt@HPC film also witnesses a great improvement by about 1.8 times compared with HPC film, and the boosted charge transfer between Ag, Pt and C was confirmed to provides a significant contribution to photothermal conversion. The proposed ultra-wide infrared sensitive film is not only designed for infrared detectors, but also has the potential to provide reference for the development of functionalized photothermal nanomaterials.

Solar evaporation of liquid marbles with Fe3O4/CNT hybrid nanostructures

HypothesisThrough the rational design of nanomaterial composites, broadband light harvesting and good thermal insulation can be achieved simultaneously to improve the efficiency of water evaporation. ExperimentSolar evaporation experiments were carried out on liquid marbles (LMs) coated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and hybrid nanomaterials (Fe3O4/CNTs) with different mass ratios of 2:1, 1:1 and 1:2. FindingThe results showed that the mixture of Fe3O4/CNTs enhances the light harvesting ability and solar interfacial evaporation performance. Fe3O4/CNT-LM at the mass ratio of 2:1 case provides the highest evaporation rate of 11.03 μg/s, which is about 1.22 and 1.34 times higher than that of Fe3O4 and CNT, respectively. This high performance is mainly due to the synergistic effect between Fe3O4 nanoparticles and CNTs, as the hybrid nanostructure significantly improves the both photothermal conversion and heat localization capability. Numerical simulation further supports that the composite can concentrate the electromagnetic field and heat at the phase-change interface. This leads to a rapid evaporation of the boundary region. This study provides a novel approach to a three-dimensional interface by assembling nanomaterials on the drop surface to enhance evaporation, which may have far-reaching implications for seawater desalination.

Phase change composite based on lignin carbon aerogel/nickel foam dual-network for multisource energy harvesting and superb EMI shielding

With the increasingly rapid pace of updates and iterations in electronic devices, electronic equipment/systems are becoming progressively intricate, aiming to achieve swift responsiveness through higher packaging density, which leads to electromagnetic interference and brings along with it heat accumulation, the creation of new composite phase change materials with efficient thermal management capabilities integrated with excellent electromagnetic interference shielding capabilities is imminent. In this study, nickel foam/lignin/rGO dual network scaffolds (LGN) with high electrical conductivity were prepared by vacuum-assisted adsorption, freeze-drying, and thermal annealing, and then PEG was encapsulated in LGN by vacuum impregnation to obtain shape-stabilized PEG/NiF/LN-rGO (PLGN) composite phase change material. The results demonstrate that the prepared PLGNs exhibit robust stability, exceptional thermal management capabilities, and commendable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE). Among these composites, PLGN-3 stands out with a notably high energy storage density, featuring a melting enthalpy of 140.95 J/g and a relative enthalpy efficiency of 98.72%. Benefiting from its outstanding electrical conductivity (1597.5 S/cm for PLGN-3) and superior light absorption, the PLGN composite phase change material also demonstrates highly effective photothermal and electrothermal conversion capabilities. In addition, the EMI shielding effectiveness reaches up to 69.9 dB at 8.2–12.4 GHz. In conclusion, the synthesized PLGN composite phase change material demonstrates considerable promise for mitigating electromagnetic interference and facilitating thermal energy management in electronic devices.
