Theoretical status of photon physics

Current topics of photon-induced reactions are discussed, summarizing the results of Photon '99. Special emphasis is put on the determination of the non-perturbative properties of the long-distance photon component and the studies of the perturbative-QCD dynamics in short-range interactions. Signals at HERA and LEP for BFKL dynamics and a partonic structure of virtual photons are critically examined.

Photon physics at ultrarelativistic-energy heavy-ion collisions

Photons are discussed as potential probes of the dynamics of nucleus-nucleus reactions at ultrarelativistic energies. The signals conveyed by photons produced in the early partonic phase of the collision are explored. The discussion is illustrated by presently existing calculations which include photon production during the entire duration of the collision.

Questions in two photon physics at LEP2; including data-Monte Carlo comparison

A partisan review of some of the most important channels accessible at LEP2, with special stress on the measurement of the photon structure function and on associated problems with Monte Carlo modelling.

Wave equations are proposed for the photon which take the feasibility of a photon rest mass into account. It is shown that massless photons are asymmetrical in spin; massive photons which have “mirror” symmetry and exhibit the speed of light in a vacuum can be localized in either region. The solution is presented for the problem of the behavior of photons in a central field and the energy of coupled states is found.

The physics of photons

The intensity of the electromagnetic field is treated using the photon wave function in the usual probabilistic sense, as governed by Maxwell's equations. The dynamic characteristics and symmetry properties are determined. The uncertainty relations are found, from which the degree of localization follows for single particle states.

Calibration of an electromagnetic calorimeter for direct photon physics

A large lead-liquid scintillator electromagnetic calorimeter has been built for a “direct photon” experiment at CERN. Gain equalisation and monitoring of the calorimeter were achieved by two complementary computer-controlled calibration systems, a laser system connected by optical fibres and a system of moveable radioactive sources. Final corrections to the equalisation were made using the physics data recorded during the experiment.

The Physics of Photons and Neutrons with Applications of Deuterium Labeling Methods to Polymers

Over the past decade small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), has found numerous applications in the fields of biology, polymer science, physical chemistry, materials science, metallurgy, colloids., and solid state physics. A number of excellent references are available [1–4] which contain basic neutron scattering theory though these text books reflect the origins of the technique and the examples are largely drawn from physics e.g., single crystals, simple liquids, monatomic gases, liquid metals, magnetic materials, etc. In view of the large numbers of nonspecialists who are increasingly using neutron scattering, the need has become apparent for presentations which can provide rapid access to the method without unnecessary detail and mathematical rigor. In the field of polymer science several reviews have been written to meet this need [5–8] including a recent comprehensive survey of neutron scattering studies of polymers [9] to Which reference will be made for detailed derivations of the expressions used below. This article, along with others in this volume, is meant to serve as a general introduction to the symposium “Scattering Deformation and Fracture in Polymers,” and is intended to aid potential users who have a general scientific background, but no specialist knowledge of scattering, to apply the technique to provide new information in areas of their own particular interests. In view of space limitations, the general theory will be given in the case for neutron scattering and analogies and differences with photon scattering (x-rays) will be pointed out at the appropriate point.

Milonni reconsiders our recent work based on a singlet spin-\textonehalf{} system in terms of polarization correlations. His conclusions are in agreement with ours and provide a simple example showing why nonlocal hidden-variable theories are unappealing. We extend his arguments in order to emphasize that spin-\textonehalf{} physics is in some ways closer to classical intuition than that based on few photon physics.

Seven Topics in Perturbative QCD

The following topics of perturbative QCD are discussed: (1) Deep inelastic scattering; (2) Higher order corrections to e+e- annihilation, to photon structure functions and to quarkonia decays; (3) Higher order corrections to fragmentation functions and to various semi-inclusive processes; (4) Higher twist contributions; (5) Exclusive processes; (6) p⊥ effects; (7) Jet and photon physics.

Some methods for using experimental data to estimate functions

This paper serves three purposes 1) A general method is given by which one may correct for a bias that results when the maximum-likelihood method is used with a sample of finite size. The application to the problem of unfolding an unknown function from experimental data is discussed. 2) A method is given by which one may determine if the data require the existence of structure in an unknown function. This technique unfolds a function from data without parametrizing;i.e. without assuming that the function is a known function with unknown parameters. If, on the other hand, one is able to reliably parametrize an unknown function, but does not know the functional form of the background to the measurement, a method is supplied for making the foreground-background separation without parametrizing the background. 3) A method is given for improving the effective resolution of experimental measurements. This method is a generalization of «bremsstrahlung end-point subtraction», a common technique in high-energy photon physics.
