How Did We Develop a Photographic Guide of Biodiverse Food Plants to Support Food Consumption Studies?
  • Feb 27, 2022
  • Field Methods
  • Ially D O Ribeiro + 3 more

This short take explains how we developed a photographic guide for assessing biodiversity in food consumption studies with taxonomy accuracy. To build the guide, we followed the “Guidelines on Assessing Biodiverse Foods in Dietary Intake Surveys” of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. As far as we know, this is the first tool developed in Brazil to support dietary surveys that consider food biodiversity. As researchers, this guide may help us make local biodiverse food more visible in food studies, improving our capacity to evaluate their contribution to nutritional and cultural outcomes.

Dry Season Composition and Abundance of the Anopheles, Culex and Aedes Genera in Makrudi Benue State
  • Mar 17, 2019
  • International Journal of Pathogen Research
  • Ameh Godwill Omale + 2 more

Mosquitoes are very important vectors of malaria, yellow fever, dengue and other diseases. Their unmitigated availability is key to the spread of parasites spread by their bites. This research was designed to find out the abundance of mosquitoes of the Anopheles, Culex and Aedes Genera in Makurdi Local Government of Benue state. Larva was collected from different water bodies in three (3) different locations that cover Makurdi representatively with the aid of a scoop spoon. Collected larva was stored in transparent plastic plates and transported to the insectarium, filtered into cleaner water by decantation, fed with baker’s yeast and grown into adult Mosquitoes in premade 16x16x16 inches cages. Adults were fed with sugar solution in cotton balls. Dead mosquitoes were stored in vials containing 70% ethanol. Using the Photographic Guide to common mosquitoes of Florida, Mosquitoes were identified by microscopy. 537 Mosquitoes were identified of different Genera. Aedesgenera recorded the highest abundance of 34.64%, while Anophelesgenera has the least abundance with 31.10%. Culexgenera recorded an abundance of 34.26% in makurdi. NorthBank with 40.78%, recorded the highest number of mosquitoes of the three Genera under consideration. Logo II/Kanshio follows with 32.22% and Karmen, 27.00%, showed the least abundance. Based on this research, Mosquitoes showed relatively high abundance in Makurdi in the dry and windy harmattan season. This could be one reason malaria persists even in the dry seasons in makurdi.

Clinical assessment of the severity of chronic hand eczema: Correlations between 6 assessment methods
  • Jul 4, 2015
  • The European Research Journal
  • Nilay Duman + 1 more

Objective. The severity of hand eczema (HE) can be assessed via numerous methods, however, a standard method remains lacking. Furthermore, correlations between the various methods are not known. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the correlations between six different methods used for assessing the severity of chronic HE. Method. The study included 100 patients with chronic HE. The severity of HE was assessed using the Hand Eczema Severity Index (HECSI), Physician Global Assessment (PGA), Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), Photographic Guide (PG), Osnabrueck Hand Eczema Severity Index (OHSI), and Investigators’ Global Assessment (IGA). Furthermore, correlations between the 6 methods were determined. Results. There was a strong correlation between HECSI, and OHSI, mTLSS, PG, and IGA, and between IGA, and PG and OHSI (P < 0.001). There was a moderate correlation between DLQI and PGA (P < 0.001), whereas correlations between DLQI and the other scales were weak. The females had lower quality of life, although gender was not associated with disease severity according to the other scales. Conclusion. Overall, the six methods used for assessing the severity of HE were significantly positively correlated. Females had lower quality of life, but the severity of HE assessed via the other five scales did not vary according to gender. The weakest correlation was between DLQI and all other scales.
