Gold Nanoparticles for Photothermal and Photodynamic Therapy.

Cancer cells exposed to 13 nm gold nanoparticles and irradiated with cw laser light at 532 nm are shown to undergo cell death via two competing causes. When cells contain relatively high quantities of gold nanoparticles and/or receive a high dose of light, photothermal effects dominate, which are independent of the cellular location of the gold nanoparticles and affect all cells in the irradiated area due to the rapid diffusion of heat. In contrast, at lower doses of nanoparticles and light, the photogeneration of singlet oxygen triggers cell death only in cells that contain a sufficient number of nanoparticles. The parallel occurrence of both effects will need to be considered carefully when designing practical therapy applications. In particular, the photodynamic effect should allow for a cell-type-specific treatment modality that can distinguish between cancer and normal cells using suitable targeting ligands on the nanoparticle surface, providing a highly selective route for cancer therapy.

The (un)known issue with using rose bengal as a standard of singlet oxygen photoproduction.

Rose bengal (RB) is a widely used photosensitizer for determining quantum yields of singlet oxygen generation. While it is known to aggregate in polar environments at concentrations above 2 μM, the relationship between RB concentration and singlet oxygen photogeneration remains unclear. This study investigates the shift from monomeric to dimeric RB with increasing concentration and its impact on singlet oxygen generation in D2O-based solutions and DMPC liposomes. Absorbance maxima for RB were observed at 514 nm (dimer) and 549 nm (monomer), with ionic environments influencing aggregation rates. Singlet oxygen phosphorescence showed non-linear dependency above 2 μM, indicating the effects of aggregation. Results suggest that RB concentrations should be kept at 1 μM or lower in photochemical studies to avoid aggregation-related discrepancies in singlet oxygen yield determination. These findings highlight the importance of considering RB aggregation in photochemical research and medical applications.

Redox-mediated dsDNA-dye photooxidase mimic enable catalytic oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine by dissolved O2 at neutral pH for improved biosensing

Catalytic oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB, an excellent chromogenic substrate) at neutral pH is critically important for amplified bioanalysis. Although some nanozymes exhibited the peroxidase activity at neutral pH, it is difficult to modulate their activity for homogeneous detection of biomolecules. In this work, we developed a redox-mediated dsDNA-dye photooxidase mimic that enables catalytic oxidation of TMB by dissolved O2 at neutral pH for improved biosensing. During illumination, the double-stranded DNA-SYBR Green I (dsDNA-SG) photogenerated singlet oxygen (1O2) can oxidized Mn2+ to Mn3+ that can efficiently oxidize TMB to produce a distinct blue within 4 min under neutral conditions. The catalytic oxidation of TMB can be readily modulated by the formation or dissociation of dsDNA during the sensing. After investigating a series of redox mediators, we found that only the Mn3+/Mn2+ redox mediator can lead to the oxidation of TMB at neutral pH. The maximum reaction rate of Mn2+-mediated dsDNA-SG photooxidase mimic under neutral conditions (pH 7.0) was 1.7×10-4 mM/s, even higher than that of horseradish peroxidase (HRP, 8.0×10-5 mM/s). The redox-mediated dsDNA-SG photooxidase mimic was used for detection of APE1 at pH 7.0 with over 130-fold higher sensitivity than that at 4.0, owing to the high enzymatic activity of APE1 at neutral pH. Meanwhile, we further extended this photooxidase mimic for the sensitive detection of DNA (LOD, 8 pM) and heavy metal ions at neutral pH. The redox-mediated dsDNA-dye photooxidase mimic with the ease of modulating its enzymatic activity and working at neutral pH is quite appealing for biosensing.

Phototransformation of tetrabromobisphenol A bis (allyl ether) in an aqueous solution: Role of environmentally persistent free radicals

Tetrabromobisphenol A bis (allyl ether) (TBBPA-BAE) represents an extensively used brominated flame retardant (BFRs) in the production of many fields and their phototransformation in natural water is still unclear. The environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) with preserved activities could exist in the environment for a long time and involve in the phototransformation of many organic pollutants. Here, the photodegradation of TBBPA-BAE with the degradation rate constant (k = 0.060 h−1) under simulate sunlight and the promoting effect of EPFRs on TBBPA-BAE photodegradation (k = 0.135 h−1) were investigated. According to the detected photogenerated electrons (e−) and singlet oxygen (1O2) rather than hydroxyl radicals (•OH) by the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), the effect mechanism may not be related to the typical •OH induced by EPFRs. The possible transformation pathways of the ether cleavage, hydrolysis and hydroxylation of propenyl bond and the debromination were proposed by the primary byproducts identified by UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS. EPFRs caused a further debromination and ether cleavage and probably be due to EPFRs directly providing electrons to TBBPA-BAE which promoted the photodegradation of TBBPA-BAE, and their reaction mechanism needed further attention. Overall, this study provided useful information to understand the role of EPFRs on phototransformation of TBBPA-BAE in water.

Effective Photogeneration of Singlet Oxygen and High Photocatalytic and Antibacterial Activities of Porous Mn-Doped ZnO-ZrO<sub>2</sub> Nanocomposites

Disperse porous Mn-doped ZnO-ZrO<sub>2</sub> nanocomposites were prepared using the facile polymer-salt method. The effect of Mn content on the crystal structure, composite morphologies, their ability to photogenate the singlet oxygen, luminescence properties, and bactericidal activities were studied. The crystal structure and morphology of these materials were investigated using XRD and SEM analysis. It was found that obtained nanocomposites consist of small (~9 nm) hexagonal ZnO and fine ZrO<sub>2</sub> crystals and the embedding of Mn ions expands the crystal cells of ZnO crystals. Photoluminescence spectra indicate the presence of different structural defects (interstitial Zn ions and oxygen vacancies in ZnO and oxygen vacancies in ZrO<sub>2</sub> crystals). Mn-doped ZnO-ZrO<sub>2</sub> nanocomposites can photogenerate singlet oxygen under visible (λ = 405 nm) irradiation. The increased power density of the exciting blue (λ = 405 nm) light significantly enhances the singlet oxygen photogeneration by prepared composites. The dependence of the intensity of singlet oxygen photogeneration by composites on the power density of exciting radiation (at its variation in the range 0.8 ÷ 1.6 W/cm<sup>2</sup>) is close to linear. Mn-doped ZnO-ZrO<sub>2</sub> composites demonstrate superior antibacterial activity against the gram-positive bacteria <em>Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 209P</em>. It was found that highly dispersed porous Mn-doped ZnO-ZrO<sub>2</sub> nanocomposites are promising for practical environmental and medical applications.

Photocytoxicity in vitro studies of ruthenium (II) complexes inducing cell death through targeting DNA

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been proven to be an important and effective therapy method with good spatial and temporal accuracy in clinical cancer treatment. Among many PDT candidates, Ru(II)-based compounds have received more attention due to their excellent photochemical and photophysical properties, high singlet oxygen (1O2) photogeneration, and DNA affinities. In this study, three ruthenium(II) complexes (RC1, RC2, RC3) have been designed by varying the aromatic plane area of the main ligand to adjust their 1O2 photogeneration, DNA affinities, DNA photodamage, and photocytoxicity. All complexes display no cytotoxicity in the dark against Hela, A549, HepG2, and BEL-7402 cells. RC1 displays no photocytotoxicity against all tumor cells. RC2 and RC3 showed high photocytotoxicity against BEL-7402 cells. The cellular uptake, cell migration, colonies assay, apoptosis analysis, and cell cycle analysis of RC2 and RC3 confirmed that the ruthenium(II) complexes might effectively enter the cancer cells, and lead to BEL-7402 cells apoptosis through DNA damage pathway. DNA photocleavage, DNA binding, and 1O2 measurement experiments demonstrated the DNA damage caused by RC2 and RC3 under light, compared to RC1, might be due to their high DNA affinities, large 1O2 quantum yields, and large lipophilicity by varying the aromatic plane area of the main ligand. Time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculated results further show that two complexes exhibit the photocytotoxicity possibly via type II photoreaction mechanism because of the larger ΔS-T than O2 and strong SOC between Sn and Tm. Hence, rational design of ruthenium(II) complexes by increasing DNA affinities, 1O2 quantum yields and lipophilicity can be regarded as an effective approach for enhanced photodynamic therapy (PDT).

Process Intensification of the Continuous Synthesis of Bio-Derived Monomers for Sustainable Coatings Using a Taylor Vortex Flow Reactor.

We describe the optimization and scale-up of two consecutive reaction steps in the synthesis of bio-derived alkoxybutenolide monomers that have been reported as potential replacements for acrylate-based coatings (Sci. Adv.2020, 6, eabe0026). These monomers are synthesized by (i) oxidation of furfural with photogenerated singlet oxygen followed by (ii) thermal condensation of the desired 5-hydroxyfuranone intermediate product with an alcohol, a step which until now has involved a lengthy batch reaction. The two steps have been successfully telescoped into a single kilogram-scale process without any need to isolate the 5-hydroxyfuranone between the steps. Our process development involved FTIR reaction monitoring, FTIR data analysis via 2D visualization, and two different photoreactors: (i) a semicontinuous photoreactor based on a modified rotary evaporator, where FTIR and 2D correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) revealed the loss of the methyl formate coproduct, and (ii) our fully continuous Taylor Vortex photoreactor, which enhanced the mass transfer and permitted the use of near-stoichiometric equivalents of O2. The use of in-line FTIR monitoring and modeling greatly accelerated process optimization in the Vortex reactor. This led to scale-up of the photo-oxidation in 85% yield with a projected productivity of 1.3 kg day-1 and a space-time yield of 0.06 mol day-1 mL-1. Higher productivities could be achieved while sacrificing yield (e.g., 4 kg day-1 at 40% yield). The use of superheated methanol at 200 °C in a pressurized thermal flow reactor accelerated the second step, the thermal condensation of 5-hydroxyfuranone, from a 20 h batch reflux reaction (0.5 L, 85 g) to a space time of <1 min in a reactor only 3 mL in volume operating with projected productivities of >700 g day-1. Proof of concept for telescoping the two steps was established with an overall two-step yield of 67%, producing a process with a projected productivity of 1.1 kg day-1 for the methoxybutenolide monomer without any purification of the 5-hydroxyfuranone intermediate.

Synergistic photogeneration of nitric oxide and singlet oxygen by nanofiber membranes via blue and/or red-light irradiation: Strong antibacterial action

New functionalities were added to biocompatible polycaprolactone nanofiber materials through the co-encapsulation of chlorin e6 trimethyl ester (Ce6) photogenerating singlet oxygen and absorbing light both in the blue and red regions, and using 4-(N-(aminopropyl)-3-(trifluoromethyl)-4-nitrobenzenamine)-7-nitrobenzofurazan, NO-photodonor (NOP), absorbing light in the blue region of visible light. Time-resolved and steady-state luminescence, as well as absorption spectroscopy, were used to monitor both photoactive compounds. The nanofiber material exhibited photogeneration of antibacterial species, specifically nitric oxide and singlet oxygen, upon visible light excitation. This process resulted in the efficient photodynamic inactivation of E. coli not only close to nanofiber material surfaces due to short-lived singlet oxygen, but even at longer distances due to diffusion of longer-lived nitric oxide. Interestingly, nitric oxide was also formed by processes involving photosensitization of Ce6 during irradiation by red light. This is promising for numerous applications, especially in the biomedical field, where strictly local photogeneration of NO and its therapeutic benefits can be applied using excitation in the “human body phototherapeutic window” (600–850 nm). Generally, due to the high permeability of red light, the photogeneration of NO can be achieved in any aqueous environment where direct excitation of NOP to its absorbance in the blue region is limited.

Photoreactivity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their mechanisms of phototoxicity against human immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT)

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous organic compounds in the environment. They are produced by many anthropogenic sources of different origins and are known for their toxicity, carcinogenicity, and mutagenicity. Sixteen PAHs have been identified as Priority Pollutants by the US EPA, which are often associated with particulate matter, facilitating their dispersion through air and water. When human skin is exposed to PAHs, it might occur simultaneously with solar radiation, potentially leading to phototoxic effects. Phototoxic mechanisms involve the generation of singlet oxygen and reactive oxygen species, DNA damage under specific light wavelengths, and the formation of charge transfer complexes. Despite predictions of phototoxic properties for some PAHs, there remains a paucity of experimental data. This study examined the photoreactive and phototoxic properties of the 16 PAHs enlisted in the Priority Pollutants list. Examined PAHs efficiently photogenerated singlet oxygen and superoxide anion in simple solutions. Furthermore, singlet oxygen phosphorescence was detected in PAH-loaded HaCaT cells. Phototoxicity against human keratinocytes was evaluated using various assays. At 5 nM concentration, examined PAHs significantly reduced viability and mitochondrial membrane potential of HaCaT cells following the exposure to solar simulated light. Analyzed compounds induced a substantial peroxidation of cellular proteins after light treatment. The results revealed that a majority of the examined PAHs exhibited substantial reactive oxygen species photoproduction under UVA and violet-blue light, with their phototoxicity corresponding to their photoreactive properties. These findings improve our comprehension of the interactions between PAHs and human skin cells under environmental conditions, particularly when exposed to solar radiation.

Photosensitizing effects and physicochemical properties of chlorophyll a derivatives with hydrophilic oligoethylene glycol fragments at the macrocycle periphery.

In this work, screening studies of the cytotoxic effect of chlorins with fragments of di-, tri-, and pentaethylene glycol at the macrocycle periphery in relation to HeLa, A549, and HT29 cells were performed. It is shown that, despite different hydrophobicity, all the compounds studied have a comparable photodynamic effect. The conjugate of chlorin e6 with pentaethylene glycol, which has the lowest tendency to association among the studied compounds with tropism for low density lipoproteins and the best characteristics of the formation of molecular complexes with Tween 80, has a significant difference in dark and photoinduced toxicity (ratio IC50(dark)/IC50(photo) approximately 2 orders of magnitude for all cell lines), which allows to hope for a sufficiently large "therapeutic window". A study of the interaction of this compound with HeLa cells shows that the substance penetrates the cell and, after red light irradiation induces ROS appearance inside the cell, associated, apparently, with the photogeneration of singlet oxygen. These data indicate that photoinduced toxic effects are caused by damage to intracellular structures as a result of oxidative stress. Programmed type of cell death characterized with caspase-3 induction is prevailing. So, the conjugate of chlorin e6 with pentaethylene glycol is a promising antitumor PS that can be successfully solubilized with Tween 80, which makes it suitable for further in vivo studies.

Photogeneration and quenching of singlet molecular oxygen by bacterial C40 carotenoids with long chain of conjugated double bonds.

Measurement of photosensitized luminescence of singlet oxygen has been applied to studies of singlet oxygen generation and quenching by C40 carotenoids (neurosporene, lycopene, rhodopin, and spirilloxanthin) with long chain of conjugated double bonds (CDB) using hexafluorobenzene as a solvent. It has been found that neurosporene, lycopene, and rhodopin are capable of the low efficient singlet oxygen generation in aerated solutions upon photoexcitation in the spectral region of their main absorption maxima. The quantum yield of this process was estimated to be (1.5-3.0) × 10-2. This value is near the singlet oxygen yields in solutions of ζ-carotene (7 CDB) and phytoene (3 CDB) and many-fold smaller than in solutions of phytofluene (5 CDB) (Ashikhmin et al. Biochemistry (Mosc) 85:773-780, https://doi.org/10.1134/S0006297920070056 , 2020, Biochemistry (Mosc) 87:1169-1178, 2022, https://doi.org/10.1134/S00062979221001082022 ). Photogeneration of singlet oxygen was not observed in spirilloxanthin solutions. A correlation was found between the singlet oxygen yields and the quantum yields and lifetimes of the fluorescence of the carotenoid molecules. All carotenoids were shown to be strong physical quenchers of singlet oxygen. The rate constants of 1O2 quenching by the carotenoids with long chain of CDB (9-13) were close to the rate constant of the diffusion-limited reactions ≈1010M-1s-1, being many-fold greater than the rate constants of 1O2 quenching by the carotenoids with the short chain of CDB (3-7) phytoene, phytofluene, and ζ-carotene studied in prior papers of our group (Ashikhmin et al. 2020, 2022). To our knowledge, the quenching rate constants of rhodopin and spirilloxanthin have been obtained in this paper for the first time. The mechanisms of 1O2 photogeneration by carotenoids in solution and in the LH2 complexes of photosynthetic cells, as well as the efficiencies of their protective action are discussed.

Carotenoid-dependent singlet oxygen photogeneration in light-harvesting complex 2 of Ectothiorhodospira haloalkaliphila leads to the formation of organic hydroperoxides and damage to both pigments and protein matrix.

Earlier, it was suggested that carotenoids in light-harvesting complexes 2 (LH2) can generate singlet oxygen, further oxidizing bacteriochlorophyll to 3-acetyl-chlorophyll. In the present work, it was found that illumination of isolated LH2 preparations of purple sulfur bacterium Ectothiorhodospira haloalkaliphila with light in the carotenoid absorption region leads to the photoconsumption of molecular oxygen, which is accompanied by the formation of hydroperoxides of organic molecules in the complexes. Photoformation of two types of organic hydroperoxides were revealed: highly lipophilic (12 molecules per one LH2) and relatively hydrophobic (68 per one LH2). It has been shown that illumination leads to damage to light-harvesting complexes. On the one hand, photobleaching of bacteriochlorophyll and a decrease in its fluorescence intensity are observed. On the other hand, the photoinduced increase in the hydrodynamic radius of the complexes, the reduction in their thermal stability, and the change in fluorescence intensity indicate conformational changes occurring in the protein molecules of the LH2 preparations. Inhibition of the processes described above upon the addition of singlet oxygen quenchers (L-histidine, Trolox, sodium L-ascorbate) may support the hypothesis that carotenoids in LH2 preparations are capable of generating singlet oxygen, which, in turn, damage to protein molecules.

Singlet oxygen generation under optical excitation of polytetrafluoroethylene

Singlet oxygen together with radical reactions plays an important role in biochemistry of living organisms, and is one of the main active substances in photodynamic treatment of organs and body fluids. Along with traditional singlet oxygen photosensitizers based on biocompatible dyes, the singlet oxygen photogeneration ability of matrix materials such as organic solvents and metal oxide surfaces has recently been investigated. Despite a good compatibility with bio substances, polytetrafluoroethylene (also known under the trademark as Teflon®) remains unaddressed in these studies. Here we present our photoluminescence studies of singlet oxygen generation in polytetrafluoroethylene samples under ultraviolet and visible irradiation. We found a good singlet oxygen photogeneration with an efficiency no less and possibly exceeding it in carbon tetrachloride, a known singlet‑oxygen-retentive medium. Based on the results obtained, it is assumed that the phosphorescence of singlet oxygen is observed from the volume of polytetrafluoroethylene with direct optical excitation of oxygen adsorbed or dissolved in the structure of polytetrafluoroethylene by analogy with direct optical excitation of oxygen in the volume of various solvents. Cooling a PTFE sample down to −20 °C allows to enhance the singlet oxygen concentration in the polymer indicating the enthalpy of oxygen sorption of ΔHsorp = −1.51 kcal/mol. Our results can heighten medical interest to fluoropolymers and, in particular, to polytetrafluoroethylene making it a promising singlet oxygen generator for photodynamic uses.

Generation of Singlet Oxygen by Laser Infrared Radiation 1273 nm and Evaluation of Cytotoxic Effect on Tumor Cell Lines

Increased reactivity makes singlet oxygen a cytotoxic agent. Infrared radiation at 1273 nm allows for direct photogeneration of singlet oxygen without the use of a photosensitizer. In this study, we demonstrated direct photogeneration of singlet oxygen in an aqueous environment using laser radiation at 1273 nm. Using chemical trapping methods, we determined the key parameters of generation, including the generation rate coefficient of singlet oxygen at an irradiance of 1 mW/cm2 and a concentration of dissolved triplet oxygen of 1 μM: ξ=(4.3±0.1) • 10-8 ((s•mW/cm2 )-1). We showed that irradiation of K562 and HeLa tumor cells with a focused laser beam at 1273 nm (diameter 100–1000 μm) leads to a significant cytotoxic effect in the irradiated area, not caused by thermal effects. We developed a mathematical model to calculate the photogenerated concentrations of singlet oxygen in an aqueous environment when irradiated with a 1273 nm laser. Based on experimental data, we calculated cumulative concentrations of singlet oxygen that result in cell death: 50% lethal dose for HeLa cells ~1000 μM, K562 cells ~3000 μM. Our research results confirm the potential application of 1273 nm laser radiation for direct photogeneration of singlet oxygen in tissues and the therapy of solid tumors

A Platinum(II) Boron-dipyrromethene Complex for Cellular Imaging and Mitochondria-targeted Photodynamic Therapy in Red Light.

Cisplatin-derived platinum(II) complexes [Pt(NH3 )2 (pacac)](NO3 ) (1, DPP-Pt) and [Pt(NH3 )2 (Acac-RB)](NO3 ) (2, Acacplatin-RB), where Hpacac is 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedione and HAcac-RB is a red-light active distyryl-BODIPY-appended acetylacetone ligand, are prepared, characterized and their photodynamic therapy (PDT) activity studied (RB abbreviated for red-light BODIPY). Complex 2 displayed an intense absorption band at λ=652 nm (ϵ=7.3×104 M-1 cm-1 ) and 601 nm (ϵ=3.1×104 M-1 cm-1 ) in 1 : 1 DMSO-DPBS (Dulbecco's Phosphate Buffered Saline). Its emission profile includes a broad maximum at ~673 nm (λex =630 nm). The fluorescence quantum yield (ΦF ) of HAcac-RB and 2 are 0.19 and 0.07, respectively. Dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate and 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran assay of complex 2 indicated photogeneration of singlet oxygen (ΦΔ : 0.36) as reactive oxygen species (ROS). Light irradiation caused only minor extent of ligand release forming chemo-active cisplatin analogue. The complex showed ~70-100 fold enhancement in cytotoxicity on light exposure in A549 lung cancer cells and MDA-MB-231 multidrug resistant breast cancer cells, giving half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50 ) of 0.9-1.8 μM. Confocal imaging showed its mitochondrial localization and complex 2 exhibited anti-metastasis properties. Immunostaining of β-tubulin and Annexin V-FITC/propidium iodide staining displayed complex 2 induced photo-selective microtubule rupture and cellular apoptosis, respectively.

Hetero-Diels-Alder Reaction between Singlet Oxygen and Anthracene Drives Integrative Cage Self-Sorting.

A ZnII8L6 pseudocube containing anthracene-centered ligands, a ZnII4L'4 tetrahedron with a similar side length as the cube, and a trigonal prism ZnII6L3L'2 were formed in equilibrium from a common set of subcomponents. Hetero-Diels-Alder reaction with photogenerated singlet oxygen transformed the anthracene-containing "L" ligands into endoperoxide "LO" ones and ultimately drove the integrative self-sorting to form the trigonal prismatic cage ZnII6LO3L'2 exclusively. This ZnII6LO3L'2 structure lost dioxygen in a retro-Diels-Alder reaction after heating, which resulted in reversion to the initial ZnII8L6 + ZnII4L'4 ⇌ 2 × ZnII6L3L'2 equilibrating system. Whereas the ZnII8L6 pseudocube had a cavity too small for guest encapsulation, the ZnII6L3L'2 and ZnII6LO3L'2 trigonal prisms possessed peanut-shaped internal cavities with two isolated compartments divided by bulky anthracene panels. Guest binding was also observed to drive the equilibrating system toward exclusive formation of the ZnII6L3L'2 structure, even in the absence of reaction with singlet oxygen.

Porous Ceramic ZnO Nanopowders: Features of Photoluminescence, Adsorption and Photocatalytic Properties

The grainy and porous ZnO powders were synthesized by thermal decomposition of zinc nitrate and polymer-salt method. The comparative study of the crystal structure, morphology, luminescence, adsorptive and photocatalytic properties of ZnO powders was carried out. The addition of PVP in initial aqueous solutions of zinc nitrate determines the remarkable change of powder morphology and decreases the average size of ZnO nanocrystals. Luminescence spectra in the visible spectral range indicate the significant difference of structural defects types in grainy and porous powders. Porous powders demonstrate high ability for singlet oxygen photogeneration and photocatalytic properties. The kinetics of diazo dye adsorption on both powders is described successfully by the kinetic equation of pseudo-second order. Kinetic dependencies of photocatalytic oxidation of Chicago Sky Blue diazo dye using as grain ZnO powder so as porous ZnO powders are described by the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model but process rates are different. Porous ZnO powder demonstrates strong ability for photogeneration of singlet oxygen under visible irradiation and high photocatalytic properties (rate constant 0.042 min−1).
